Diner Reviews
  • "Great food, as always. Love the family-style dinner on Sundays. Service was attentive but not overbearing."

  • "This is definitely a case of 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. Outside doesn't look like much, but the food was amazing! A creative chef with excellent skills made for a wonderful evening of dining. We will definitely be back!"

  • "I have eaten here a half dozen times over the last couple of years. I have never been disappointed. This place can be pretty inexpensive if you get a couple of the "small plates" and eat them tapas style. In a way that is a shame as the large plates are so good too."

  • "When we arrived a waiter pointed twice to our table instead of showing us to our table. We ordered bottles of red and white wine. 40 minutes after getting the white wine we got the red. The waitress was not trained and could not pronounce the the food she was describing. We were three couples that ordered the same salad and split them so we each got half salads. She delivered three salads to six people and walked away. There was a hair in mine. For the main course the pork tenderloin was so smokey and salty it was sent back. The lamb, and vegetarian dinner were good. Waiters & manager were so busy doing bus boy work and avoiding eye contact we couldn't even get our water glasses filled. Awful experience."

  • "Great food and great wine...I highly recommend Maxine's."

  • "Too much change between the excellence of the end product of the head Chef Robbi and the when he is not in the building...I would call ahead and make sure that he is cooking if you are a bit of a food snob...Other chef is generally fine, but if you are very particular then you need to come to restaurant when he is cooking...It can go from world class to ok in from one evening to the next... The wait staff has been with the restaurant since it opened and is very experienced with the menu...If you go and have poor service, it tends to be a specific waiter... the table right next to you probably had excellent service.... Its warm and cozy inside and is one of the best date night settings for small groups or dates..."

  • "We like to go to Maxine's for dinner because the chef is willing to try new and interesting variations with the usual ingredients. And while we usually like some items more than others, we are always pleased with the variety and the intent to bring a different dining experience to us patrons. We will continue to dine here because we always have a good experience."

  • "I enjoyed the food and pairings. I may be in the minority, but I think that smaller beer portions with larger food portions may appear to offer a better value."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "Appetizer and entree's were very good, taste as well as presentation. Salads were not very good, weak presentation and worst ceaser salad ever."

  • "Went here for my boyfriends birthday dinner. The food was wonderful, flavorful, interesting and fresh. However, our server was completely hopeless. She was very sweet and nice but completely ill-prepared to be working at a restaurant where the price of dishes should come with a certain level of experience from staff. The little things were taken care of promptly, such as waters refilled new silver wear when cleared, etc. But it was impossible to get a clear or confident answer about food, wine or anything from our server. I would definitely NOT recommend this restaurant if you want a total dining experience. Too bad because the food was very good and the vibe was funky and cool."

  • "We very much loved our experience there. Gone three times now and every time the food is excellent. So fun to try the exotic foods and everything tastes so wonderfully. Our guests have loved the experience also."

  • "I brought my friend here for her birthday dinner. The food was fabulous! The service was very basic and not at the same level as the food. The server was new but nice in explaining her limitations. She didn't seem to have much support in her lack of knowledge. She hadn't tried all the food and therefore couldn't make any recommendations. We also had wine questions which she could not answer. I would have expected the sommolier or resident wine person to assist in person but they did do indirectly. They didn't have a Sauvignon Blanc on the menu which is fine if I could have heard what might be good for substitution. It was my conclusion that this new server was not given adequate orientation for her position. Her friendliness made up for it."

  • "We recorded Downton Abbey so we could enjoy the Sunday night family style dining at Maxines. I had lamb, my husband had the Jegerschnitzel. He ordered wine, I didn't but should have to outline all the flavors we enjoyed. The salad with varied greens had the lightest dressing, maybe lemon and oil and was served with dinner bread and flavored oil. Just a perfect beginning. The family style plate of sides is what we came for and it did not disapoint. Tiny vegetables with distinct seasonings, fritters, crisp polenta squares, potato chunks with crisped skins and skin pieces, a Kimchi relish - just wonderful. The entrees seemed unnecessary, but we enjoyed them nethertheless. I felt happy afterward. My birthday dinner. Thanks."

  • "Went on valentine's day. The food was terrible and the price was outrageous."

  • "Went for Valentine's Dinner. Sat at the bar, even though I made reservations, but that's ok, since all the action was at the bar area. The appetizer was an arugula salad with marcona almonds and a heavenly bite of panko crusted ricotta cheese, to die for!!!! The short rib entree came with something I had never eaten before, a sous vied beef heart, which was surprisingly delicious, since I don't normally like organ meat. Dessert was nothing to write home about, so I won't elaborate. The place was packed, seems they don't have enough parking for all their guests, neighbors came in complaining about parking. The wine parings were spot on, overall I'll definitely come back again."

  • "My husband likes his steaks and potatoes and I am a bit more adventuress with food. The food was "off the chart" good. The filet with the gorgonzola cream on the side, and spinach risotto fantastic! Thinking my man would not like the spinach risotto (he loved it) i also ordered a side of the couscous mac and cheese. We both loved them. The service was wonderful and we could hear each other talk. Loved the atmosphere. Romantic and comfortable. I"

  • "My husband was looking forward to having the Bison Stew, which was listed on their website menu, but it was not on the menu when we arrived. Updating the menu would have helped a great deal. The salads we ordered were good and nicely presented. The wine we ordered was very good. Our entree's were okay, but not outstanding."

  • "only 2nd time here and another bland dinner. I don't think I'll be going back to try it for a 3rd time. I had the Filet and risotto. Filet was good but risotto lacked any flavor whatsoever."

  • "It was delightfully small. Various seeting arrangements allowed mocerate privacy. Love to be there with my partner in the small boths for two."

  • "I have been to Maxine's 4 times and have never been disappointed. Everything from food to service has always been great. It is becoming one of my favorite places to takes guests from out of town. It is the kind of restaurant like Villa Nova or Jen's that gives you that special feeling and the staff comes off as being personally vested in your experience."

  • "We miss Maxine's in Girdwood, but we are happy they have found such a nice home in Anchorage. The dining options all sounded so delicious. Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. So nice to see the Meze Platter is still on the menu, and wonderful as always. The Surf & Turf off the small plate menu was unique and very tasty. Just what I was looking for. The side order of brussel sprouts was amazing. The whole table was begging for more."

  • "So everyone has their bad days. I really hope that's what happened. I have gone to this wonderful place manly for the pork belly appetizer. Then I find they have moved it to the entree menu. I can't wait to get there. I order my wine, very yummy, Ordered the Pork Belly with fried Brussel Sprouts, There was a white bean puree as well. The pork which should melt in your mouth was so tough I couldn't finish it, the Brussel Sprouts were fried just about two munities too long, The white bean puree, I don't have a clue what that was all about. Then I ordered the molten chocolate cake and sure enough the cake was not cooked through. Was not my night. Yes I will go back. 1 bad meal out of 10, I can live with that."

  • "Everytime we have been to Maxine's, the food has been outstanding and the staff, very attentive. We like the fact we can actually hear eachother, too. We have introduced many people to the fact that Maxine's exists here in town. We have taken several couples already and they are just amazed! Parking is a bit of a bummer. I have seen others park across the ally in the parking lot of another establishment. I just don't want my car towed when I come out like at some other places around town."

  • "Maxine's is always a good choice right in our neighborhood. The food is good and so is the staff. And no need to go downtown."

  • "We recently had dinner for 6 people with a set menu. While the food tasted good, it was ALL cold when it wasn't supposed to be. No matter what each person ordered, it was not the right temperature. I'm not sure I'd try the restaurant again even though I had been there once before and it was decent. It seemed as if the staff wasn't really trained for an expensive restaurant."

  • "Went for Christmas Eve dinner, and the only thing that was worth the money was the seafood special. Our chicken was undercooked, the ravioli tasted like frozen pizza, and they were out of salmon for the beet salad, but neglected to tell us this until they actually brought the salad. Then, didn't discount the bill until we asked them to. Poor service, ok food."

  • "Maxine's has a very unique menu which periodically changes and everything on it is wonderful. Everything I have eaten here is excellent not to mention they have a great wine selection! Service is great as well! One of the best restaurants in Anchorage."

  • "Table service was friendly and informative. I took the waiter's recommended pork choice and didn't regret. The wine list was a good mix of low to mid range prices and upper end offerings. The Josh Cab was a real value and the Petite Syrah (can't remember because I didn't pick it) was also quite good, but a bit pricier."

  • "Made on-line res w/ a follow-up call from Maxine's for Thanksgiving. She confirmed vegetarian options available and served separate from meat, as well as a reduced price for our son. On-site, the server was clueless some of us were vegetarian and how it was to be served. All food arrived at once versus courses. At bill time, we were charged for all meat dishes instead of the lower priced vegetarian option with the child's meal price, Wow, I have no idea why they'd advertise vegetarian options nor take any reservations with special requests; neither seemed to matter once in their restaurant. We were even the first seating with a mainly empty restaurant, so no excuses for being too busy to provide requested meals and charging accurately!"

  • "My friend and I really wanted to like it, but I think it just fell short in too many ways. Soup was not warm enough. The beet salad was the most expensive on the menu and small beet cubes was not what I was anticipating. The main courses were fair and the creme brulee was uninspired. I doubt I will go back."

  • "First visit, but were greeted and seated immediately. Service was very good. Found the wine selection limited but adequate. Menu options were few but entrees ultimately selected were served correctly and at right temperature. Salad special was best1st course as well as the appetizer course. Would visit again for dinner and would recommend for friends and visitors."
