A word from MAXIMO
Blending traditional and exotic, MAXIMO offers authentic Italian dishes and bold South African delicacies, plus a tempting selection
of South African wines. Dine in the formal downstairs dining room,
the more casual upstairs dining area or the garden courtyard (each features a full bar). Within the historic ivy-covered building, the ambience is lively and sophisticated with a subtle safari feel reflecting the menu’s wilder side. MAXIMO is located in downtown Sarasota near Five Points and the Opera House. A special theater/opera
menu is offered during season.

This restaurant was disappointing -I guess we expected too much. However, we were looking for a somewhat exclusive restaurant to celebrate with friends from South Africa and instead found the owner's children running up and down the stairs to the upper level, sometimes yelling at each other as kids do carrying a puppy. This was not the ambience we were looking for. The waiter was friendly but had no idea about the specific South African dishes when asked by our guests, two of which came from South Africa. We asked to say hello to the chef just because the advertising said he was from South Africa-turned out the owner is from South Africa and not the chef. Food was average-nothing special.

Tuna tartar was not available, steak tartar - either. (Both were on the menu list though.) when we asked why both were listed, we were told that it is too expensive to change menus...? Food was decent, but not outstanding. Plus, our waiter was too busy serving the tables and being a bartender at the same time. So, we had to go to the bar in order to remind the waiter about our bill, as we had to be at Van Weizel at 8:00. It wasn't the waiter's fault; it looked like the owner of the restaurant tried to save money hiring less staff. Good luck, but Sarasota is a very special and picky little town! Rumors spread quickly... And sorry, but we wouldn't recommend Maximo to our friends and neighbors... :(

The location is wonderful. Both indoors and outdoors. The service was ok though not special. And it took way to long to bring the entrees, while the place was far from filled. All of the above would not be important when the food would be great, but it wasn't. Our group was mixed with people going for the South African specialties and some for the more safer options. Knowing how great South African kitchen is we were expecting a lot. Preparation and presentation failed to excite.

We've eaten at Maximo several times and always enjoyed it. I should try other entrees but I love the Koi (water buffalo) Tagliate and keep coming back to it. One friend had the grouper and almost licked his plate clean. His guest is a vegetarian and the chef prepared a pasta dish with vegetables that wasn't on the menu. She loved it. The ambiance is good, the wine was good and the food was excellent, as expected. We will be back.

Interesting menu with unusual combinations...pork chops were good, the Snapper was excellent, but the artichokes on top were pickled and too much vinegar taste!! The Polenta seemed to be fried in a small square and was old, tough and tasteless.. the curious and seemingly German style vinegary sauerkraut was not a good match for fish! The Lamb Shank was also tough for being cooked for hours!! The waiter was not explicit in describing any of the dishes. A bit disappointing for the ambitious menu.

This was our third visit at Maximo's new downtown Sarasota location. It's in a historic building, right around the corner from Sarasota's historic opera house and presents a splendid setting for dining. Maximo's combines classic European cuisine with African influences, due to the owner's South African heritage. Along with more conventional fare, the menu offers ostrich, kudu and other regional specialties. There is also a superb Durban lamb curry and some of the best veal in Sarasota, when available. Maximo's buzzes during the in season (winter/spring), but becomes a quieter venue uring the off-season months. Personally, my wife and I enjoy it more when it's more active, but the food remains top notch all the time.

Maximo is in walking distance of many arts venues and should make a wonderful pre-theater dining experience . The night I was there a special fund raising event was being held in the out door space with a VERY LOUD band. I was forwarned, therefor forarmed. It served its purpose and I am sure I will return and enjoy a quieter dinner next time.

This was our third or fourth visit to Maximo but this visit was not quite as satisfying as the last ones. The service was excellent (there are some new - very experienced waiters who've joined the staff) but the drinks weren't as well prepared as in the past. (Different bartender?) And we found the portions just too big. It's rich food and, since we were going to a performance after dinner, we couldn't take left-overs home with us. Sometimes less is more.

  • Maximo in downtown Sarasota
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 4/20/2012
Maximo in downtown Sarasota has succeeded the Chop House that had become a favorite of ours on our annual visit to the city, in part because of the ambiance of the brick-laid outdoor courtyard dining area with its wrought iron furnishings. Any concerns were soon allayed by the friendly service, a wide-ranging menu, and a visit to the table by mine host, who told us of his North African origins and his time in Johannesburg. The latter clearly inspired some of his menu, which at first glance might seem a trifle quirky - there were perhaps four South African items, including antelope and Ostrich. But there were numerous main-stream items, from which we chose an excellent lamb curry and a nicely presented and tasty salmon dish. Two fine meals!
