Restaurants come and go in Seattle, but Maximilien stays. It provides an authentic French restaurant with friendly but staid service and a view to rival Canlis and other longtime Seattle standbys. Tucked back near the main entrance to the Pike Place Market, it easy to find, yet secluded. But for the view it could be tucked back in the Odeon district in a quiet corner only a few steps from the bustle of the city. However, unlike Paris, you can count on the fish. For a romantic dinner or a quiet lunch with friends, this is a great spot.

My friend suggested that we go so I let her pick. Haven't been there in years. We decided to split the mussels. I worried a little that it wouldn't be enough and that I would have to order my own entrée and look like I was starving. Not so! So much we had leftovers and that was had to do, it was so delicious! Bread to soak up the sauce and frites! Topped it off with Creme Brûlée, chocolate cake and lattes. YUM.

Waitress was very efficient and friendly. Service was prompt with drinks and food served in a short time. Food was very favorable , we had mussels and flank steak. Large portion of mussels. Baguette to die for with sea salt butter! When reserving note that there are two levels with the upper one not as intimate and cozy as the first level with a plain decor. The first level tables are little closer together but with better water views. Second level was great for us with a 2 year old that we could corner in the banquette seating. Table seating also available on second level. Outdoor seasting not open because of weather but looks like it would be great place in good weather.

Unfortunately, the great interior and view were dwarfed by two things. #1 was the mediocre food. One member at my table found his meal nearly inedible. #2 was the steep price that hit us at the end. While pricing of the menu items seemed about where I expected, all the sundry additions were quite expensive. A small basket of bread (4 small pieces) for $4. A 1/2 cup serving of fresh orange juice for $5.25 (no refills). Coffee was similarly steep. Overall, a brunch for 4 consisting of 2 sandwiches and 2 bowls of French onion soup and no alcohol ran $90 with 15% tip. That's exorbitant for what we got.

We have been to Maximilian's quite a number of times and the food is always excellent. The restaurant was quite full on Saturday night and we felt the service was "too fast". Our appetizer (oysters) was served well before we could finish our before dinner cocktail and the main course was brought to us almost immediately after we finished the appetizer. They were not trying to turn the tables so we don't know why it was so rushed. But, as noted, the food was superb.

went for a romantic anniversary dinner and was seated in the middle of the room next to a baby who was crying! We did have reservations. When we got up to leave we were given a table upstairs which was quieter and had a nice view but really, not a great way to start the evening. Dinner was fair and no muscles on the menu which I was looking forward to. Used to think this was a great place to dine, not so much now.

Great view. Great service. Nice looking restaurant. However, the food was uneven: some items were outstanding (soup) and some were just so so (steak). I also note that I was disappointed to find the menu I had consulted on line did not match the offerings at the restaurant on a Saturday night.

First of all, great service. I also liked the idea of their mandatory 4% tip for less paid employees. Fois gras duo was superlative, as well the rabbit. Soup a l'oignon was ok, nothing exceptional. Loved the Gewurtztraminer Emile Beyer. This was our 3rd time and won't be the last.

The mushroom soup had great flavor, but was cold (not a chilled type of cold, but a hot-soup-left-in-a-cold-bowl-on-a-counter-too-long type of cold). The sauce on the fish was seasoned perfectly with a lot of flavor, but my first bite of fish was filled with sharp bones. The Fois Gras was seared just right, and the accompanying chutney worked very well as a pair... But the brioche was burnt on the outside which made for very bitter bites. The Creme Brûlée was very nice.

In Pike Place Market's main level (behind the bronze pig and fish throwing guys), Maximelien (like Place Pigalle next door) has a terrific view of the Puget Sound, the Ferris Wheel and West Seattle beyond. Décor is cozy & romance was in the air for several couples. Unfortunately, also like Place Pigalle, the food is meh. I had the mussels in a butter sauce (very good) and coq au vin (the classic, average). Hubby had the fruits de mer salad (ok, average) and fish/seafood (the scallops tasted like they'd been frozen, the fish was average). Service was fine, neither great nor poor. Glad we only paid Restaurant Week prices for such an average experience. Instead, go to icon Grill or Barolo or Lecosho nearby for a great dining experience.

The problem w/ living in a city like Seattle, w/ all the options we have for amazing food and new places opening every week, is you forget about places that have been around a while that shouldn't be forgotten. Maximilien is such a place. I can't say I've not heard good things, but Maximilien always seemed to fall off my radar. If it wasn't for restaurant week, it would've likely stayed there. Good food, drinks, and service and a really nice, intimate little space.

My husband and I were very please with this place. We went during the restaurant week and we were looking for fine French cuisine. I decided to go outside the designated "restaurant week menu" and have the magret et confit de canard which was absolutely delicious! The whole plate was very well balanced and tasty. I had enough, no need for appetizer or desert for me. My husband took the coq au vin and thought I had a better meal! The paired wine was very good and HIS DESERT: the espresso crème brûlée was EXCEPTIONAL! Service was quick. We saw small groups and kids. Noise level was low. Nice décor with a view on the illuminated Great Wheel! Would definitely go back!

We went for Restaurant Week and the food was excellent they did not skimp on food or service just because it was restaurant week. I had the coq a vin and my husband had the snapper, both had excellent flavor. We had not been there before and thought this was a good way to test the service. We will be back in December for my husband's birthday.

My fiance and I had a great dinner with great service. The by-the-bottle wine list was long and presented by country and region which was great but the by-the-glass wine list was a little short. The outdoor seating was excellent. Indoors was a little cramped and warm but nice, nonetheless, and with a good view of the ocean. The desert menu was only ok. The creme brulee was very good, the soufle disappointing and the chocolate torte only ok. For the main course, I had the halibut and my fiance had the salmon. Both very good. I would go back again.

Our visit to Maximilien was an altogether pleasant experience. We made the reservation for five because we expected only adults. But when our daughter and son-in-law showed up with our infant grandson, the staff didn't miss a beat, accommodating us with an extra table to make sure we had plenty of room. The other patrons were equally pleasant. (Thankfully, our grandson was quiet and happy the entire time.) For appetizers, we had the oysters and the roasted goat cheese with crostini. Both were excellent. Everyone wanted seafood, so two of us ordered halibut, two ordered scallops, and one had the Columbia River salmon -- all of which were terrific! Our server was great as well -- not too attentive, not too scarce. We will definitely be back.

I've been to France many times over my life time and I can say that the food here was very close to that I would normally get in France. The flavors were all spot on and the portion sizes were good. Some people on here complain about waiting too long for this or that. This is pretty standard for Europe. Generally they don't bother you at the table unless you need something.. Dinner is a 3 hour experience... This is no different. I will say that it's hard to find though.. They have very little signage in the area. You wouldn't expect this place to be tucked so far back into a Pike Market place shopping center.

The food was great, salmon a little dry if I had to be really critical, but I'd go back in a heartbeat for those scallops alone. The VIEW, however, is what makes this place a super super slam dunk. We had a reservation at 7pm in late September, so it was the perfect time to watch the sunset. If you make ONE good decision it will be to time your dinner around sunset. One other mild disappointment was that the bartender didn't know what an "aperol spritz" was which seemed like a pretty basic thing when my mom ordered it. Either way, my French 75 was great and the wine list seemed solid. Loved the whole night, the restaurant was a perfect choice for a 6 person birthday dinner but would have been awesome for a romantic date for two :)

We chose the prixe fix meal, with oyster shooters, foix gras, halibut, & crème brulee, with matched wines. The food was lovely, well served. Beautiful evening, a lovely venue and view! After our appetizer, the people in the table next to us left, and we requested to move to their table with a better view. The waitperson told us that table had been reserved, without checking. For the next hour and a half we were at our table, and no one sat at the table we had requested. We had hoped for better service from an acclaimed restaurant on our 22nd wedding anniversary. Venue was nice, and food was excellent.

We took a friend out for her birthday dinner on a warm September evening. We were seated outside on the open deck where we had a wonderful view of the waterfront and the sunset over the Olympic Mountains. Our server was fast and efficient but also took time to explain details of entrees and special dishes. The complimentary dessert in honor of the birthday was unexpected and deeply appreciated. Almost forgot, at our request (and our cost) the restaurant provided special flowers at our table to commemorate our friend's birthday.
