A word from Max a Mia
In 1991, Richard Rosenthal along with partner Brad Karsky opened Max a Mia in Avon, CT. Their vision was a restaurant that would allow diners to enjoy a "casual Italian bistro." That vision was an instant success. In the first year of operation, Max a Mia won "Best New Restaurant" from Connecticut Magazine. It also earned recognition for "top grossing restaurant in it's size" from Restaurant Hospitality. The brick oven, which is visible from the dining room, serves up stone pies "with a thin, wood-smoky-flavor crust and an array of toppings." While all the pasta dishes are outstanding, the daily risotto specials have been described as "luscious." Equally important, desserts such as traditional tiramisu or the unique white chocolate polenta cake complete the meal. Like it's sister restaurants, Max a Mia is focused on providing each guest with a truly enjoyable dining experience.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I have dined at Max a Mia many times but this was my first Sunday lunch/brunch. It was a good choice...not too crowded, good menu and generally less hopped up than usual. We had a toddler in tow and we had a nice, comfy booth in the bar where he was not apt to be a disturbance to others. Our food was tasty, cocktails were inspired and we could hear each other. All in all, a good experience."

  • "It was Max Restaurant week; a fixes price menu offered with their regular menu. 1) The entire restaurant was chaotic and service suffered. Our waitress did her best to spend the time needed with us but was so busy , it was clear she needed to move on. 2) One order at our table was from the restaurant menu, the other from the regular menu. The restaurant week appetizer, entree and dessert was only fair. Not in keeping with any of the Max Group restaurants. Overall, would not recommend visiting during this period. I would give the restaurant another try based on the Max reputation but as a one time only experience - not good!"

  • "Max a Mia is a gem. It is popular of good reason. The food is excellent. The setting is both comfortable and casually elegant. But what makes this place stand out is it's staff. Lead by their floor manager, Liz, the team of bar and wait staff are attentive and seem to intuit the restaurant experience you are looking for. That last fact is what makes Max a Mia so unique and how it can wear so many hats, being a great place for groups or kids and just a few tables away be the perfect place for a romantic dinner."

  • "Always Great! My go-to restaurant in the Farmington Valley. This night we just went for a bottle of wine and a light meal of apps, salad and dessert. Everything was delicious and we had a great time."

  • "Haven't been to Max a Mia in more than a year which is too bad since it was an excellent dinner. The restaurant was crowded but we arrived early and were seated immediately. The service was excellent including good suggestions from our waitress. The wine selection is good and reasonably priced. The waitress was very accommodating when it came to special orders. The mussel appetizer was among the best I've had anywhere and was big enough for a dinner portion. We ordered the sweat potato soup and hanger steak specials and they were both superb. Overall, a great experience and one that we will repeat much more frequently."

  • "Several years ago, we dined for the first time at Max-a-Mia and marveled at how much we enjoyed the entire experience. We have returned on numerous occasions since then, and have never been disappointed. This is a restaurant with a comfortable and friendly vibe that serves top-notch Italian cuisine ranging from expert takes on classic dishes (e.g., lasagna, chicken parm) to perfectly prepared fish, with delicious salads and absolutely fantastic "stone pies"-- artisanal small pizzas. The chef, whom we have met at a couple of wine dinners, has a passion for his cooking, and it shows. The service is just right. Our dinner there earlier this week simply confirmed our conviction that this is one of our favorite restaurants in the area."

  • "We hadn't been to Max a Mia in a while and were entertaining out-of-town guest and thought it would be great to take them there. Well everyone was wonderfully pleased with the service and food. The seafood was superb, especially the mussel appetizer. The wine list was extensive and the dessert menu limited but had enough of a variety to please most. Overall a very positive experience and a highlight of our weekend entertaining."

  • "Several years back, I decided that this was a fine place for drinks and apps, but entrees tended to be a let down and we always felt rushed. Our meal this time was very good in all respects, but the service still left a bit to be desired; I felt rushed yet forgotten at the same time - and this was a Wednesday. On the plus side, there were enough friendly staffer's there to pick up the slack and we enjoyed our food very much. I started with fried calamari (though the garlic aioli was a bit too "mayonnaisy") and had scallops with creamy polenta and kale. Very nice dish, but the $26 price point seemed high for what I was served. I told my husband that we should try the place again, but it's priced a bit beyond the "girls night out" range."

  • "Wonderful food as you would expect from a Max group restaurant. Went for a teenagers birthday dinner, and they made it very special. It was extremely loud however, hard to hear the person across the table from me (there were only 4 of us)."

  • "first time back at Max a Mia in years and we were disappointed at the change. The food was delicious but the selection was more limited than I expected. Few to no vegetarian options. Standard selection, lacking in craft and creativity. Perhaps we just hit it wrong and had an unprofessional waiter who happened to be rude and cocky. The runners kept busy, seeming to also be bussing and doing additional tasks like serving our table when our server disappeared half way through dinner. We all have off days. But surprisingly poor experience for a Max Group restaurant. I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend it to others."

  • "Being a regular diner at Max a Mia, this visit was a typical great night out. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal. Our waitress was friendly and was able to accommodate some special requests. If you've never eaten here....you must try it."

  • "Back to consistent. The menu is "reliable" and most items are good. Best restaurant in the general area but it's not exciting in any way."

  • "My husband and I both had the tuscan salad as an entree. We've had it many times before. The taste was fabulous but the portion size was a little small."

  • "One of the best restaurant chains in CT. All of their spots have a unique menu, style and the quality is always great. Keep an eye out for their specialty dinners. Awesome experience."

  • "We had the salmon and one of their pasta specials with crab meat. It was terrific! Our wait staff was tremendous and service timing excellent - and the restaurant was packed on a Sunday night. Definitely returning as soon as possible."

  • "Went on Valentines day with my wife. Our two prior dining experiences were exceptional. The entries we picked on Valentines day were not that good (swordfish and a pasta dish)"

  • "My husband and I went to Max a Mia for Valentine's Day. We got an early reservation (5:45 only one available on O pen Table). We had to wait only 5 minutes and were given a choice of a booth in the bar area, or a table in the restaurant. We chose the restaurant because the bar was very noisy. Big mistake- sat elbow to elbow with other diners, but to be fair we were warned. Despite the close seating, the food is always consistent at Max a Mia. I had the Cod and my husband had the filet mignon (both excellent) I love the food at MAax a Mia, but have learned not to go on VD! Much more pleasant when less crowded!"

  • "Excellent food as usual. Friendly staff. I had flowers delivered through the Open Table link - it worked flawlessly, with the restaurant staff setting up the table with the flower before we sat down. Overall great experience."

  • "First visit to Mia a Max. I picked it because my wife's name is Mia and it could not have worked out better. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and we were seated immediately despite a long line waiting for a table. Lynn our waitress was fantastic, the food was great and the meal was finished off by us receiving a chocolate covered strawberry for each of us. The owner also made everyone in the restaurant feel comfortable by coming by to see how the service and food was. Will be back soon to this gem, witch made our Valentines day dinner a memorable one."

  • "We took my mom and my 15 month old to dinner and everyone ended up happy. Our child is generally well behaved in restaurants but it was good that the open dining room and open kitchen were pretty loud just in case. I did not check kid friendly as the food is definitely geared toward adults. The calamari was terrific and I enjoyed the bolognese. My wife had the steak special and my mom had scallops. Both were not disappointed. The only disappointment was the boring dessert menu. Not much interesting there, but we were nice and full anyway. Service was solid and she even made sure things were quicker for us knowing that our child could only last so long. Overall this was a very good experience."

  • "On this particular night, we ordered what we always do, the Tuscan salad as an entree and it was smaller than usual. The flavor was great as was the bread, etc. it just was a smaller portion."

  • "I have been very disappointed in my food at Max-a-Mia in the past year or so. Have been going there since it opened, many years ago. Food used to be very consistently excellent. Menu changes very seldom, but the same menu items are no where as delicious as they used to be. Range is from mediocre to not good at all. Ceasar salad is bland. Max-a penne tasteless and super-chewy. And this was a Saturday night - I assume the "good" chefs were on. Very sad to lose a dependable night out. Will try again from time to time - hoping for the best."

  • "Went with a large group a few days before Christmas. We were seated quickly, even though some people were not there yet. Our server was knowledgeable and courteous. Everyone enjoyed their meal and drinks. Although we frequent this restaurant all the time, this was the first time we were with a large group and they didn't disappoint."

  • "Friendly and comfortable bistro atmosphere. Went with college children and had a warm and welcoming server who was knowlegable, too. Her name is Kristen and she took care to explain specials and make recommendations and was spot on with her service and timing. The food was enjoyable and varied. We enjoyed a warm evening with a very good meal."

  • "Thanks Max A Mia for making my husband's 53rd birthday one to remember. I had invited 2 other couples to join us for dinner. None of us had ever been to Max A Mia. All 6 gave their meals an "outstanding" review. Our waitress, Natalia" was energetic and engaged. A pleasure. Dishes ordered included Pasta with Bolognese, shrimp scampi, Salmon, Scallops and 2 people ordered Duck. Overall can't think of a single thing we didn't enjoy. That's pretty good considering there were 6 of us. 2 people ordered lobster bisque for starters, 3 people ordered salads. We split 1 dessert. Everyone had cocktails. Bill came to $300. I thought that was fair."

  • "We dined on NYE and were pleasantly surprise at the relaxed atmosphere. We were seated within a minute or two of our arrival, the service was excellent and the food was, as always, awesome. Had one small issue with temperature of our wine but everyone (and I mean everyone) took responsibility and made it right. I think the server, bartender and hostess were more upset about it than we were. PS: Love the white chocolate polenta cake, It is the reason I keep coming back. Please don't ever take it off the menu ."

  • "I wrote an unhappy review of Max A Mia not too long ago. As long-time (20 years?) customers we've come to expect reliably great food and we'd had a couple of not good meals. BUT, we were at Max A Mia twice in the holiday week, once for our anniversary and then again for New Years Eve. Both nights were extremely, extremely busy. I have to say that the food was back to its usually standard for our anniversary and on NY's eve it was superlative. A couple of us had a few of the specials, and the duck/black pappardelle dish and the beef filet were exceptional. Thanks Brad, Liz, Naomi and the rest of the Max A Mia crew!"
