MaverickWill keep going backOverall memorable. Bone marrow with gremolata appetizer - tasty enough to get my partner to finally understand why I always want to order the bone marrow. Anchovies were, I thought, overpowered by something spicy in the sauce that smothered the fish flavor to the point of making me wonder why bother serving fish if you're trying to hide it?
Spring lamb chop was very good, cooked perfectly. It also came with belly roulade, which I wasn't crazy about, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood that day. The farro salad with the lamb was also praised.
Lavender genoise cake with macerated strawberries, cream, and a cute piece of lavender candy. Different enough, and not too heavy.
Maverick is consistently good, and the menu is always changing.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything Fried Chicken Should BeMy husband and I made a reservation for dinner before a late flight. We informed the staff that we were on an airport time frame and they were incredibly attentive and accomodating. The asparagus appetizer was very good, the entrees - fried chicken and lamb were both outstanding. The fried chicken was everything you want fried chicken to be: crispy, salty, moist, chicken-y. I was impressed overall with the high quality of service and the awesome food. I live a long ways from San Francisco and this was definitely worth the trip before going to the airport.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMDelightful surpriseNo expectations, but very pleasantly surprised with food and service. Softshell crab, asparagus starter and fried chicken were standouts, but honestly everything was good. Thoughtful, welcoming service, simple/inviting decor and feeling that the focus is squarely on the food. Only downside was the neighborhood -- I might hesitate to take out of town guests here.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Birthday BrunchMaverick is a wonderful restaurant; the food is unique, fresh, and flavorful. The cream puffs are out of this world! Every dish is made perfectly. The service is so friendly and efficient. The people who work there are all good looking and so are the customers (how do they do that?). A great birthday experience.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGet the fried chickenEverything was good but the fried chicken was GREAT.
The host (owner?) does a great job of explaining the menu and making you feel welcome.
Note: no liquor license so it's beer, wine, and wine "cocktails" only.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGood not greatFood did not really gel though their fried chicken was good. Pickled vegetables did not work as accompaniment though. My friend really enjoyed her lamb shank though. Appetizers were too fussy, small, and did not come together as well.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMComfortable place with good foodFirst visit choosing Dine-about-town option at an early before show seating. Light mixed greens salad with almonds. Delicious crisp fried chicken with slightly crunchy escarole, pickled green beans, biscuit and gravy. Very tender and flavorful braised pork cheeks with clams, root vegetables and peas in tasty but salty broth. Dessert of warm milk and cookies (4 large -- 3 went home in a box) was a nice conclusion.
Sommelier and staff we all knowledgeable and shared service responsibilities. Excellent selection of hard to find wines, many from small CA wineries. Especially the Forlorn Hope Winery 2012 Alvarelhoa.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dinnerGreat fresh food. Very good service. The four of us loved it. We'll go back again.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMExtremely responsiveI choose this place to dine before heading out to the Armory to see The Black Watch. Once the waiter knew of our theatre date, he
Did everything possible to make sure we left in plenty of time to catch the show. Wonderfully responsive. Delicious meal. Highly recommend.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMTRY IT - YOU'LL LIKE IT!!Although Open Table confirmed to us a 5:30 PM reservation, they confirmed to Maverick a 6:30 PM reservation. When we arrived and discovered the mix-up we were pleased to find that the staff quickly made room for us. They were great and at a moments notice.
We shared the scallop starter which was really delicious. The chicken was great served with tasty string beans and escarole.
Would strongly recommend for the food and the staff.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMI don't often have dinnerI don't often have dinner in this neighborhood, so I didn't know what to expect. I was most pleasantly surprised - excellent food, very friendly service, all in all a wonderful experience!5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Mother's day brunchUnique and tasty take on the American brunch standards. My wife had the lumberjack, I had the Lobster benedict. Her honey ham bacon was amazing. My lobster cakes were flaky, crispy, meaty, delicious. Her strawberry-lime-pepper mimosa was new and different and fantastic.
Parking is available on the street right at the restaurant. Service was top-notch and fast. The host was helpful, gracious, accomodating even to those that showed up without reservations. Can't say enough great stuff about this place, highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is creatively craftedThe food is creatively crafted without sacrificing taste. . Flavors are subtle but brilliant. The combinations are creative without competing. The presentation is whimsical and wonderful. Every course was as special as the next. I especially loved the several starters. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and gruyere gougres .5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOrder the fried chicken!Even at brunch (when it's not on the menu), you can get their amazing fried chicken just by asking for it. Sure, it takes a few minutes, since they're not officially serving it, but you don't do yourself a favor by not ordering.
Just be sure to tip the highly enthusiastic staff (and, if it's brunch, try the house strawberry-and-other-things mimosa. It sounds weird-black pepper?--but tastes great!)5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMAs a Portland resident I amAs a Portland resident I am a little hard to please when it comes to dining out. I enjoyed this restaurant for a number of reasons. I could get in! I found it difficult to choose among the entrees, all of which sounded delicious. I prefer a smaller menu with 5 dishes well done to a larger menu with many poorly executed meals. I also thought the service was particularly friendly, casual and efficient. For high end food they weren't taking themselves too seriously. I hate precious attitude. These guys are down to earth. My only regret was that though we were quite satisfied with our meals we would have considered dessert if something like fruit sorbet were available. Surely with all the ice cream places now in San Francisco....5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMOUTSTANDING LAMB, deliciousOUTSTANDING LAMB, delicious veggies, cooked to perfection, loved the half glasses of wine!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for visitorsMy partner and I took my brother to Mavericks. My brother is a well seasoned traveler and foodie from D.C., so impressing him with something new isn't easy. Maverick's combination of ingredients and flavors did the trick. My brother had the Alaskan halibut and called it "fantastic." I had the rissotto and my partner had the lamb and both were phenomenal. The waitstaff was impeccable... knowledgeable and ever present but not interferring. The restaurant's casual atmosphere made it easy to relax, a lovely experience overall. This was my first time at Maverick's and it certainly will not be my last. Bravo!5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMCan't Miss with MaverickSecond visit in recent month - really enjoyed everything. Brought friends from Amsterdam and they also thought the food was super. All our appetizers (we shared a number of them) were excellent - particularly the duck cured in earl grey tea and the bone marrow. All our entrees were top notch. The only less than superior item was the dessert...they were all pretty pedestrian. I say stick to the appetizers and mains and get a dessert wine or digestif.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMMy part and I had a wonderfulMy part and I had a wonderful time at Mavericks. The service was excellent and food was very good.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome as usual in all respects.Awesome as usual in all respects. Inventive food with great execution. Knowledgable and curtious staff.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMMaverick the RestaurantI've eaten at Maverick a number of times. Each time I have had good food and service. We started the meal, sharing the deviled egg with caviar. The caviar didn't have much taste, but the dish was tasty as a whole and I would recommend it. There was one egg with a dollop of caviar on each egg. I had the fried chicken and it was fabulous. Moist and flavorful. It was boneless, except for the wing bone. I asked or all white meat; had two huge breast halves, and took one half home. My wife had the short rib which was tasty, but too dry and tough. You really can't go wrong with this restaurant. As a bonus, we parked right in front.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThe dishes are very creativeThe dishes are very creative and beautifully presented but slightly lacking in flavor.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious and fun. Small spotDelicious and fun. Small spot but would definitely return.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWent here with my wife forWent here with my wife for her birthday and we were very happy with the choice. Hadn't been previously but a friend recommended so we decided to check it out. Overall it was very good, but a couple of the food items marred it from being excellent.
On the plus side, the service was excellent with a friendly and helpful waiter. The wine list was very good, and we liked the ambience & general character of the restaurant. What let it down was the food. Generally high quality (the octopus salad was a good choice) there were a couple of mis-steps, such as a slightly dry pork entree and a beet ice cream for dessert (not good).4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent creativity and greatExcellent creativity and great tasting food. Keeps the menu fresh while holding onto old favorites like the fried chicken.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had family visiting andWe had family visiting and decided to come to Maverick for an early Sunday brunch. The food was outstanding!!! We all left there with very happy tummies.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMust try Brunch spot!Simplicity at it's finest. A friend recently went and had brunch and raved about the Lobster bread pudding. Intrigued I headed there for brunch and will say i will go again!!! Start with cream puffs: chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. The Lobster bread pudding is out of this world AND the potatoes served along side are toasted to golden perfection. I am going again very soon!! Service is friendly- Katheryn rocked!!! Suggested yummy wine to go with my feast!3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMPopular for good reason. I'dPopular for good reason. I'd recommend a freshening of their excellent menu to keep interest. Cocktails are good. Not inexpensive.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe'll be back again!Food was inventive and delicious. We'll be back again!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently wonderful, delicious! We love going to Maverick for dinner and for brunch. They consistently provide an awesome dining experience. The sommelier is extremely knowledgable about their wines and willing to answer many questions about pairing wine with food. Outstanding!!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMInventive and delicious deviledInventive and delicious deviled eggs and cornbread fried green tomatoes were wonderful starters. Fried chicken is definitely one of the best around! The fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and milk is one if my favorite desserts and simply comfort food done perfectly. Go on a Monday and enjoy the wine by the bottle savings, too!1/1/0001 4:00:00 PM
