Maverick reviews from OpenTable diners
  • Last night for us and for Maverick

On recommendation from hotel staff, we tried out Maverick in the Mission District. It was our last night in San Francisco, and sadly, the last night for Maverick for a while. We read in the paper the next day that Maverick had a fire overnight. They will be shut down for months. So, for posterity, here is our review. We loved it. It was lively and packed with locals. Our starters included roasted Padron peppers. We had flat iron steak which was flavorful and well cooked. We shared an interesting chocolate dessert that used Mescal as an ingredient. That got us talking with our server who recommended a mescal bar down the street. We went there after and had lots of fun. Our sincere best wishes to the fine folks at Maverick.

Some of the most creative, but not in that overdone SF way, food in the city. Beautiful presentation and dazzling flavors. Exquisite. I eat out almost every night so I know what I'm talking about. Was blown away. All five in our party agree!

I made a reservation for 8 for my birthday brunch. The table ordered a nice variety off the menu so I got to see many of the main dishes and they all had nice components in them. I ordered the house cured salmon and eggs in a hole, and the salmon was very good, but the egg yolks were hard as rocks in the bread. Not sure if that is how it should be, but I prefer my yolks runny. They came with home fries which tasted ok, but lacked in color. I also ordered cream puffs- my favorite was the chocolate. Apparently the lobster bread pudding "benedict" is very good, as was the fried chicken sandwich, the Italian breakfast, yogurt and granola, and the lumberjack. Also, it was very warm in the front window, so if its warm that day be prepared.

Hands down one of the best dining experiences I have had in San Francisco, frankly anywhere. The food was imaginative boundary pushing, though not too far out and hit home on every plate. We were treated so warmly, and attentively and not just in a very traditional ”nice” restaurant way. Each person we interacted with was clearly invested in us enjoying every bite and sip. We turned ourselves over to the sommelier and drank his recommendations and were the better for it. With each pour I learned more about wine and wine pairing. It is not often one gets such a tasty education as part of the service. There is no question I will go back again and again.

Service- excellent. Very attentive. They even waived a drink that my wife did not care for. They never asked, they just noticed that she did not make much progress. Nor did they even mention they were waiving the drink off the bill. Very classy. Food was solid. And all very interesting. There were several items that I had to waffle between and the waiters were very helpful and knowledgable. I also liked their wine flight options. I did not necessarily love all the wines but I liked that they had a reasonably priced option to try it. The atmosphere was good, maybe a bit on the noisier side but not unreasonable. The knock was that the casual atmosphere to price point seemed out of balance. But we would definitely go back.

Overall, our group enjoyed the meal. However, after spending $500 and less than 2 hours after our reservation time, we started sensing that the waiter was hovering...trying to get us to leave. He literally stood over us for the last 30 minutes of our stay removing every single item off the table one by one. Very unsettling. Don't think we'll go back.

This was our first visit to Maverick, even though they have been open for several years now, and we loved the food and the small restaurant ambiance of the place. The decor is very austere but the food and the service is fantastic. The fried chicken, the pork plate, and the sweetbread dish were all fantastic. Loved their cocktail selection and the Champagne flight was quite good. Nothing to complain about, really. The place is pretty small, so it's best enjoyed by one or two couples. It's not really well-suited to big groups.

I have been to many restaurants in SF, both neighborhood gems and notable names. Maverick had the BEST HOSTESS of any. She greeted us promptly and gave us a choice to take a small table near the door or wait a few minutes for a larger table where the current diners were finishing. We chose to wait outside, where she came and offered us drinks. When the diners at the table ordered dessert she came out to tell us and once again gave us a choice. We chose to wait. She was attentive, honest, friendly and so very pleasant. Never have I encountered anyone better, no matter the type of restaurant. They food was exceptional, our waiter also wonderful, but the night started out so perfectly with her welcome and the rest just flowed.

The food was very good. It came out a little funny but overall timing was good. The Salmon gets high marks but the deserts not so good. The peach desert had way too much dough for the amount of peaches in it. But the ice cream was interesting. By the way Davide is the best. He is personable and suave without pretension. When I told him I was not having wine he didn't ask me the typical "are you sure?". He simply accepted it and graciously took the glass off the table for me. He fits in perfectly with the excelent food/relaxed atmosphere movement. I wish more places got this part right.

We haven't been in years and we were a little surprised at the change to the menu. It's become a bit more sophisticated and somewhat adventurous. Certainly fine for San Francisco, but maybe a bit challenging for out of towers, which was the case for the people we brought with us. The unexpected combination of certain items left them concerned that it might be be good. We reassured them the place was great and that they knew what they were doing. Fortunately, Maverick's kitchen delivered. It was all very good and the service was great. As a side note, the noise level is MUCH lower than it used to be. It was really loud before and it's not nearly as bad now.

I've wanted to got to Maverick for a long time now, and we finally got our act together and went. The space is small but clean and the ambiance is modern. We has the local albacore with burrata, the chicharrones, the heirloom tomato salad, and the veal sweet breads for appetizers. All excellent. For entrees we had the fried chicken x 2, the pork short ribs, and the bass. The bass was a little small but the flavors were great. I'm a fried chicken aficionado and maverick did not disappoint. Wonderful juicy chicken with great flavor and crust. We skipped dessert. The service was attentive and friendly. Will definitely go back

A group of 12-14 of us made reservations for a birthday celebration here. The restaurant was wonderful! It is an intimate place - so only good for groups with reservations. Everything was wonderful --the food; the service-warm, kind, helpful; the wine-delicious and perfect with the food. The place is lovely. We all had a wonderful time -- and all wanted to return. It is a gem. Easy to miss, going down 17th st. towards Mission -- b/c it has a low-key, understated look. A remarkable find. I never write these reviews -- and I hate hearing myself sound like every other positive review of any restaurant -- but Maverick is really special. The food is exceptional.

Opens at 10:30am for lunch. We were seated right away. Coffee was good, and they were very attentive in keeping it full. Fried chicken sandwich was outstanding. What's not to love? The cole slaw gave it a nice contrast to the fried chicken pieces, but I couldn't get enough of the fried pickles that also adorn the sandwich. The chips on the side were oversalted, though. The lumberjack brunch came with peach pancakes, which were excellent, although they were not exactly fluffy, like you would expect from buttermilk pancakes. The sausage was delicious, the bacon was salty as well. The space is not big, so it would be hard to accommodate groups bigger than 4-6, and although there were several families with kids, it seemed a little challenging.

The wait staff was incredible! We felt so at home, and considering we live up the street thats a really good feeling. This was my first time eating dinner rather than brunch in the restaurant. The meat eaters where all very pleased with their dishes (the lamb and fried chicken). The vegetarian dish however was disappointing, especially considering its at the same price as a steak. The squash blossoms were very good but the tomato puree was rather uneventful and lacked spice while the fritters (forgot what kind they were) tasted simply of fried food. I was expected a little more finesse and seasoning especially compared to the range that is shown in the meat plates.

I found my brunch dish (Italian breakfast + duck confit) to be oversalted to the point where I couldn't finish it. The salty part was likely the mushroom sugo or duck confit. Polenta and eggs were fine.. I didn't say anything to them because I'm more sensitive to salt than the average person but it would be nice to have the option to add salt yourself.

My wife and I enjoyed or brunch very much last Sunday. The food was good. I had the Italian breakfast with duck config which was delicious. My wife had the deceptively named lumberjack. A huge plate with two great but tiny pancakes, one sausage cut in half, one bacon in half and. Tiny little egg. The food on the plate was all fine but there was way to much plate and all the items felt disconnected and lonely. Our waitress was very sweet and efficient thought my coffee went empty and stayed that way until the end of our meal. I would go back. Despite the little details my wife and I have. Good meal and a nice time.

It was my first time here and I enjoyed it...glad to finally try Maverick and I will be back. The manager/sommelier was very welcoming and super cool about tasting wines, and the food was good. I was actually glad we were seated in front at the table by the door, as the dining room seems a bit lacking for some reason. It's a pretty small space and I think a little bit of work on the lighting would pay off big time. I know this sounds like nitpicking, but a tweak of the lights would make a huge difference. It's an aspect of restaurant ambiance that's so often overlooked, but is so crucial. But I appreciated the lack of pretension, and overall a solid spot for a nice dinner.

We've gone twice now and probably won't return. The food is okay but unspectacular (fried chicken is fine but Foreign Cinema's, for ex., is far superior), and they really need to do something about the bread: the gougères, which came with the appetizer dip, were lukewarm and had to be sent back, and both they and the biscuit with the chicken were dry and doughy, and detracted significantly from the dishes they accompanied. Salads were very good. The wine list is meager. Over-all, a perfectly adequate meal, but one can do so much better in SF.

Service was superb - I enjoyed our waiter's interest (and patience) in discussing the various menu choices and pairings with wine. My husband was in the mood for a cocktail and thought the wine cocktails A+. Their menu really isn't comfort food at all - we enjoyed locally sourced burrata, soft shell crab, risotto and beef bone marrow and more. We then got a delicious bottle of Burgundy that paired with both our appetizers and meals. Very good value and interesting, I look forward to returning!

What a gem! When the manager told me Maverick had been there for 8 years, I couldn't believe it! I'm so glad we went there. The minute I looked at the menu, I was delighted because there was a taste of everything! We ordered a lot of food because we couldn't narrow it down. The artichokes were amazing, the spanish anchovies melted in your mouth, and the Gougeres with french onion dip were heavenly. We had the beet and burrata salad (with the most amazing farm-fresh herbs in it from a local grower) and the soft shell crab appetizer. For our entrees, we had the fried chicken and I went for the farro risotto. Panna Cotta for dessert! Everything was delish! The wines we paired with our meal were exquisite. The four of us each had something different and none of us were disappointed. My omelet was perfect, S had the pancakes, G had the hash and P had the lobster Benedict. Each one was flavorful but not fussy or heavy. Delicious. Our waitress was relaxed, informative and efficient. The place is small but we didn't feel like we were squished in. But the best part was the owner who is hands on and super nice. We were a bit late all getting there at the same time and he couldn't have been more cool about it. This small neighborhood restaurant seems to be doing it right. Can't wait to go back for dinner.

Overall memorable. Bone marrow with gremolata appetizer - tasty enough to get my partner to finally understand why I always want to order the bone marrow. Anchovies were, I thought, overpowered by something spicy in the sauce that smothered the fish flavor to the point of making me wonder why bother serving fish if you're trying to hide it? Spring lamb chop was very good, cooked perfectly. It also came with belly roulade, which I wasn't crazy about, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood that day. The farro salad with the lamb was also praised. Lavender genoise cake with macerated strawberries, cream, and a cute piece of lavender candy. Different enough, and not too heavy. Maverick is consistently good, and the menu is always changing.

My husband and I made a reservation for dinner before a late flight. We informed the staff that we were on an airport time frame and they were incredibly attentive and accomodating. The asparagus appetizer was very good, the entrees - fried chicken and lamb were both outstanding. The fried chicken was everything you want fried chicken to be: crispy, salty, moist, chicken-y. I was impressed overall with the high quality of service and the awesome food. I live a long ways from San Francisco and this was definitely worth the trip before going to the airport.

No expectations, but very pleasantly surprised with food and service. Softshell crab, asparagus starter and fried chicken were standouts, but honestly everything was good. Thoughtful, welcoming service, simple/inviting decor and feeling that the focus is squarely on the food. Only downside was the neighborhood -- I might hesitate to take out of town guests here.
