Diner Reviews
  • "Ordinarily, everything is outstanding at Maude's, but on a recent visit, 3 of 5 dishes were extremely salty; one was totally inedible and we sent it back, the other two we ate then could barely swallow later that night, we were so thirsty. I would go back for the amazing cocktails but not sure I would eat dinner there ever again."

  • "I have been here several times and it has always been a great experience. The food, ambiance, and service are always great and the staff is very knowledgeable. They always listen to what you are looking for and make great recommendations. This times was no different with one exception. My credit card was charged an extra dollar. It's not a big deal. I'm not going to call, complain, and waste my time over a lousy dollar. However, it does leave a sour taste in my mouth after I already tipped over 20%. Not classy."

  • "We came here for my husband's birthday and it was great! We ordered 4 appetizers to share with a couple of drinks and that was all we needed they were very filling and we were able to share with our guests as well so everyone had a little bit of everything. Our waiter was very nice and knowledgeable, he was able to explain any questions we had. I would definitely come back."

  • "This was my second time there but my date's first. We both agreed the place is a gem. Good vibe, the menu has a lot of interesting offerings, the food was terrific and the service excellent. All of this at a reasonable price. What more can you ask of a restaurant."

  • "Restaurant was great, food was different but very enjoyable. Waiter sold us on some very good cocktails. We will be going back. Decorations really set an ambiance, a little dark, but very well coordinated."

  • "We had agreat time.. We were looking for a relaxed atmosphere with a little specialness.. We got it... I was different than all of our other good Chicago food experiences.. We will be back!"

  • "Really enjoyed some French food that was unique. Foie gras was excellent. Served with awesome bread. I tried one of each of the oysters and they were very small for $3.50 each. The bone marrow was really good and was also served with awesome bread. My friends had the chicken with smashed potatoes and they raved about the potatoes . I will definitely go back because there are so many items I want to try on the menu."

  • "Went with a friend who is also a foodie and we agreed his was definitely in the top 10 meals of our lives. Foods had great portions so we were able to share several dishes without being overwhelmed. Smokey violet is also a must try drink!"

  • "Maude's provided a romantic setting that my date absolutely loved. The food was very enjoyable. I ordered the braised pork shoulder, and it was delicious as well as attractive. My date ordered the tenderloin steak tartare, and she was a big fan. We left stuffed and satisfied."

  • "The front door hostesses on 3/30/2014 conducted themselves in an unprofessional manner and lost a return customer. I showed up 20 mins early - the restaurant was only 30% full. They refused to seat me because the 2 others in my party had not arrived. They were abrupt and appeared annoyed I interrupted their social discussion. The woman in blue tights spent the entire time twisting her hair and then she handled out menus, coats, etc. After observing their behavior for 15 minutes I decided I couldn't reward this poor level of customer service. We went to another restaurant where the hostess even called Maud's to see if someone showed up earlier than the rest of the party, I could get a table. They responded yes. How ridiculous."

  • "We hav been to Maude's several times. As a vegan I try to go to Establishments my friends will enjoy even though Are not vegan focused. Maude's always works with me to prepare items That work for me while my friends enjoy a great meal."

  • "The excellent service combined with superb food and drinks so good you can't just leave without having another, Maudes is a must if you live anywhere in the Chicago area."

  • "Celebrated a special occasion, share plates and enjoyed every bite. Highly recommend the Chicken Liver Mousse, Ricotta Gnocchi, Pomme Frites & the Cassoulet. The bread was some of the best we've had in a restaurant."

  • "Husband and I came here for our 5th wedding anniversary and absolutely loved it. While we are normally big craft beer fans, we can also appreciate a well done mixed drink, and came here knowing that Maude's specializes in cocktails. We were NOT disappointed, as the drinks were delicious. If you're a beer fan, know that they do have a small beer menu of decent beers, but nothing a true craft fan would be impressed with. We were seated upstairs, which was perfect - the downstairs was nice, but the tables were closer together and it was noisier than upstairs. Our waiter was great and very knowledgeable of both the food and drink menus. The food was INCREDIBLE - we got four items and were thrilled with all. Highly recommend!"

  • "Very charming bistro, wonderful, creative drinks menu. Charming staff. Best roast chicken ever & wonderful oyster selection! Reasonably priced, too."

  • "First time at Maudes with three friends and we waited thirty minutes for our drinks.....ordered apps, recieved apps, ate apps and still no drinks....waiter stated bartender lost drink order. Really."

  • "food was delicious! Bone Marrow was incredible! The steak tar tar is a must! perfectly seasoned. The mussels were the star. The sauce is so good you will leave stuffed because of all the bread you will use to dip in it!"

  • "First of all Great waiter, and I can't emphasize how enjoyable that made the event, and how comfortable it made my clients. Cassoulet was magnificent, the Seafood tower was epic and the specialty cocktails were awesome. Cool vibe with the ambience of the space. Maude's will be at the top of my list for business dinners."

  • "Fun atmosphere. Try and sit upstairs for a more quiet, cozy ambiance. Staff was great! One person in our party was late and they were very patient about it. Excellent craft cocktail and great food!"

  • "We love Maude's - every time we eat here it is fantastic. We have our go-to favorites, but the real gem of Maude's is the atmosphere and consistency. Their front of house people are fantastic and should be commended. We can't wait to come back."

  • "My wife's birthday- she was greeted immediately by our server, Peter, with a warm 'Happy birthday'. Great server. Our eyes were a bit bigger than our stomach and he offered to cancel one of the dishes when he saw we ordered too much. Good pacing of the meal, the food was all outstanding. Cocktails perfect. One of our favorites."

  • "The main problem w/ the service is the hostesses. They're always rude. First they lied and said my table was just being cleaned off and would be ready shortly. 20 min later my boyfriend and I are given the little table by the entrance which was occupied until a minute before they tried to seat us. The whole point of using Open Table to decide where we were getting dinner was to choose a place where we could have a table RESERVED for us. It's also the only reason we waited until 10pm to eat dinner. That's what was available. We opted to wait on the next table to avoid the cold draft, and right in front of us, the hostess rolls her eyes and says to the other hostess "they won't sit there." Don't bother w/ open table for Maude's. No point."

  • "Maude's Liquor Bar boasts some of the best cocktails in Chicago (try the Vieux Carre) and great food that is best shared with others. The mussels are amazing, especially the homemade french baguette they give you with it to mop up the sauce. We also ordered the short ribs which were out of this world and a great Bibb lettuce salad. Really though, you can't really go wrong no matter what you order at Maude's."

  • "Our first time here was a very positive experience in all respects. We sampled several of the craft cocktails which were all delicious with the standout being the St. Germain Fizz. Started with the french onion fondue which was excellent. My girlfriend and I then split the ribeye steak and brussels sprouts which were equally delicious. Creme brulee and coffee for dessert was a great way to cap the dinner. Service was friendly and informative without a hint of any hidden agenda. We will definitely keep this on our short list for a return visit soon."

  • "I visited with three friends on a Thursday evening. The restaurnat wasnt busy when we arrived but quickly filled up. The server was very knoweledgable and we ordered smashers (fabulous drinks!) and shared bone marrow, shaved veggie salad, mussels, lyonnaise salad, chicken, brussel sprouts. The food was all very good - especially the bone marrow and shaved salad. The server finally approached the table and apologized but it was still 30 mins in between courses. Noshared utensils served and we had to request extra plates. We also had to wait another 20 mins after dessert for the check - and had to ask several times. I love Maudes and visit about twice a month. the kitchen got in the weeds and the service timing was awkward"

  • "I'm really fussy about an ambiance as an interior decorator. I don't like a place to feel trite or overdone.and they just nailed it at this place. This bar and restaurant has a very European grunge feel to it. It's as cozy as your living room and it just calls you back to revisit every weekend. The ambiance is sexy and sophisticated and yet casual. the food is rich as most French food is. Just be ready to eat a lot of butter. Yet its worth it. The bar and mixologist was outstanding and the drinks were worth going back for over and over again. You must definitely go and enjoy an experience that has you feeling as though you've left Chicago."

  • "My Husband and I recently enjoyed a lovely dining experience at Maudes. This was our first time at Maudes and the total experience was lovely and very relaxing....considering we had concert tickets for a 8 PM show. Our Server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some wonderful suggestions. The ambiance of the restaurant is similar to the to the small, bistros that I've experienced in my trips to Paris. The dim lighting and music really set the mood for what turned out to be a fabulous date night."

  • "We visit Chicago every year or two for a long weekend of food, drink, shopping and culture. We happened upon Maude's one year and now won't come to town without dining there. Every time we go there is something memorable that makes us pine for our next visit (a bottle of wine that becomes our new favorite, a dish we dream of like the roast chicken, or even a chance to dine next to and meet Yo-Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax)! We love lots of Chicago Restaurants but this is always our gem and favorite."

  • "Four (4) of us went, and we all had a great time. We split 4 appetizers, and each was exceptional. The atmosphere reminded my wife and me of a small Paris restaurant we had been too a few years back. Maude's was a wonderful time, and we hope to return."

  • "Country French menu, with each dish brimming with flavor! Make an early reservation so you can enjoy the Cassaulet- it is outstanding! There were four in our party, but our food was brought to us in a couple of "flights" so that we ate our dinner as small plates, sampling four different entres. Our server (Tom) was knowledgable, friendly, and had perfect timing . . . He helped make our trip to Maude's a perfect evening!"

  • "Maude's is one of our favorites. We had friends in town and wanted to show them good Chicago dining, so chose Maude's. The food was even more delicious than on previous occasions. We sat upstairs, which is much quieter than downstairs so better for talking. Had yummy cocktails. All around a great evening!"

  • "checked it out last weekend- had a lot of expectations so here is the full report - ambiance and service: top notch. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and the joint had a nice vibe - food: nah. I had the Roasted Bone Marrow red onion jam, parsley salad, coarse herb salt which was a sum of 6 pieces of sourdough bread; a little smidgeon of jam; no salad and three giant bones with probably an ounce of bone marrow between them. very disappointing and frustrating to have a night out on basically bread and jam presentation: had the oysters- nicely presented. -drinks: creative menu and well made drinks note to self: eat at other places on the row and probably head here for a chilled out low key night out . No food"
