Diner Reviews
  • "I love this place! It is great for lunch or dinner so long as you BYOB! The ever-changing seasonal menu is always excellent."

  • "Went on a Monday night, many restaurants are closed, not too crowded, got a great table. Food was delicious! Service was impeccable. BYO so the wine was great, I brought it. Looking for the tasting menu as I had heard good things about it. Unfortunately none this week. Looking forward to going back very soon."

  • "The pris fixe, as always, was adventuresome and delicious. A best deal in town. Service was very personable yet very proficient. Matyson stays at the top of my list."

  • "This was one of our worst dining experiences ever. The food (lobster tasting menu) was okay, but not amazing. Our main issue was the service. It appears that Matyson organizes its tasting menu so as to have a production line system (efficiency--saving pans and kitchen energy). What did this mean for us? Ours was "paired" with tables that had arrived between 30 minutes and an hour after we had. Our observations and conversation with the attendant confirmed our suspicion. We waited for 25 minutes between each diminutive course. Add a noisy environment where you have to plead for attention, and you have a nightmare of a $100 (BYO) meal. Having waited tables myself I'm very generous with tips, but here we left no tip and an explanatory note."

  • "Matyson is our favorite BYOB! Servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Food is always delicious. We love Matyson!!!!"

  • "This is a lunch review. I often have lunch at Matyson because the food is always interesting, there is enough diversity to meet anyone's needs, and service is good. What else does anyone need?"

  • "Matyson proved to be a real disappointment. Sadly, the location is on the wrong side of Rittenhouse Square, an unattractive bus route near a Starbucks. As we began to relax over wine, we were told after less than 15 minutes that we would have to order soon because they would need to turn the table over within the hour. That was kind of the deal breaker right up front in. No one wants a time clock started before they have even had dinner. It was that way all evening, a feeling of being rushed, yet with an air of arrogance. This is not a place to return to or recommend."

  • "Endlessly creative, Matyson is simply the best restaurant in Philly."

  • "We LOVED Matyson and have not been in awhile. Maybe they are still the same and all of the new restaurants are a step better. Our server was not very pleasant and the food was just average. We did not eat the Tasting Menu and I had an experience in the past where the regular menu was disappointing when the Tasting Menu was available."

  • "Matyson was the perfect Father's Day venue! The food was amazing as always and our server, Lauren, was so very helpful and attentive. A fabulous dining experience!"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We ordered the "seafood preview" pre-fixe diner. It was a great way to get a taste of everything on the menu and reasonably priced. Tuna tartar was pretty standard, although putting chili peppers in the mix gave it a kick! We also ordered the foie gras as an extra cause why not; it was very savory and rich, a real treat. Among the mains, the halibut was the definitely the most memorable. The dish was perfectly crisped on the top and flaky in the middle, exactly how fish should be served! Dessert was great too, best key lime I've had in awhile: not too sweet, not too tart, just the right amount of lime. Great place for a date or special night out, reservations are probably a good idea."

  • "Wish I found this place earlier. The dinners were outstanding and wait staff wonderful!!! Will definitely return many times in the future."

  • "We had not been to Matyson for a while. We had a lovely dining experience. The food and service were spot on."

  • "Keep writing glowing reviews of this restaurant. Food is always interesting, carefully thought out and well presented. It is on a very short list of favorites for dining out in Philadelphia. If noise level is a concern, go early as the sound level is much more energetic as the place fills up."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "You may not believe it because the portions are small, but we were very satisfied by the delicious dessert."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "I've been several times to Matyson; the food is excellent every time. The problem is the waiting between courses. I went for the tasting menu this time. The restaurant was about half full. So why did it take over 20 minutes after I finished a course for the next one to arrive? Even dessert took 20 minutes after I ordered it. On the plus side, the wait staff is very friendly and professional. Also I appreciate that they allow reasonable substitutions. But whatever is taking so long between courses (kitchen throughput? too few servers?) needs to be fixed."

  • "Buttery, perfectly cooked scallops--- no sand or grit anywhere. Amazing combinations of flavors for every dish...Halibut-- crusty skin and perfectly cooked meaty filet....well executed veggies and sauces that are never too salty and add the perfect complements to the taste of the fish. While everything at this restaurant is tasty, the fish is just OUTSTANDING"

  • "We haven't been to Matyson for a while but it hasn't missed a beat. It is recommended on our Sites & Bites Map and Guide. We'll have to figure out how to include it on our Sites & Bites Mini-Holiday Guide for Philadelphia."

  • "Awful service forgot our lunch. Made lame excuses. Chicken sandwich all bread no chicken. Very salty. Would never go back. "

  • "We checked out Matyson for our first wedding anniversary. The staff was very attentive, but not overly so, and our server was fantastic. We ordered a selection of small plates and one entree. The small plates were amazing ~ flavors phenomenal and it was fun to get to try a larger portion of the menu. We enjoyed our Scallop Entree (the foam had a great flavor), but not nearly as much as we enjoyed the octopus, sweetbreads, fois gras and tuna crudo. We loved the atmosphere, and had an amazing and relaxing Sunday night dinner. "

  • "Have had business lunches there for years but tried it for our 20th anniversary dinner the other evening and what a treat! A true gem on the Philly restaurant scene. Chef accommodates all preferences and dietary needs. Creative menu was just perfect. Homemade ice cream surprise with a candle arrived at our table for dessert. We will definitely return. "

  • "Everything was amazing, from the minute we walked in the door until we left, it was a great experience. The food was phenomenal and the staff were great, could not have asked for better service. My girlfriend and I will definitely be returning. "

  • "Octopus appetizer was amazing and the entrees and desserts were equally great!"

  • "First time to Philly, and a friend recommended this place. Probably the best $75 meal I have ever had. Our server was attentive and friendly with detailed descriptions of any menu item questions we had. We stared with the mussels, 2nd Bibb salad and sweet breads( both delicious) to finish it off with the scallops. My only certique would be that the scallops were never turned, so they were over done on one side and under on the other. After inquiring this is the chefs style?! Next time I will not get the scallops. Overall very nice meal at a very reasonable price. "

  • "As usual everything was out of this world delicious... If the tuna crudo is on the menu, you MUST order it. "

  • "Great grouping of their special soft shell crabs with multiple platings and seasonings."

  • "A friend that was visiting said she was up for some really good food. The first place I thought of was Matyson where I have never been disappointed. We started with Veal Sweatbreads and Gnocci (sp) as appetizers and thought we had never had anything better. The entrees were also great. She liked it so much she got a gift certificate for an anniversary present for friends. The quality of the food at matyson is always good plus it's a BYO which makes it even better."

  • "Something is amiss in the kitchen. It took 45 minutes for our lunch order to arrive, and when it did, it was barely ordinary. I had a salad with polenta, and the polenta was cold. My partners soup was so garlicky as to be inedible. The waiter had to be collared twice to respond to the status if our order, and then it was mostly just a shrug. And the noise level was way over the top. I won't be back. "

  • "Dined here for the first time around 9:00 PM on a Saturday to celebrate my birthday. The place was pretty full and somewhat loud but it was more energetic than annoying. The lighting is dim and makes for a very intimate atmosphere. I was impressed with the menu, which rotates every few weeks. There wasn't a large variety of choices, but all options sounded delicious. A lot of unique flavor combinations. The portions aren't huge, they are the perfect amount of food without stuffing your face. The two of us ordered one appetizer, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert and were very full by the end. The scallops we ordered were the largest I have ever eaten, and the veal was super tender. The hostess was nice and attentive to our needs. "

  • "My wife and I go to Matyson every year for a special occasion, usually our anniversary. We originally heard about the restaurant through one of Craig LaBan's books. The hostess, our waitress, and the rest of the staff were fantastic, and the food was amazing (as always). "

  • "I always enjoy dining at Matyson! I never know what will be on there menu from one visit to the next but can always find many great items to choose from. They always entice with new and original flavor combinations to create perfect dishes."

  • "Excellent as always. Foei Gras was so good I ordered 3."

  • "It was ok. food was good and tasty. but I wasn't overwhelmed. the portions were not big (which is a rare comment I make in my reviews) and the choice in the menu was small. Looking at the menu nothing made me excited to try. everything seem very average and overpriced because of that. true, it was tasty, very tasty eventually, but it wasn't amazing (which wasn't mean it was bad). the service tried too hard to be friendly that it was too much but they didn't notice details: i needed to ask for water several times... so it was "caring" not in a real way. overall good food, but doesn't match up to fine dining restaurant Philly has. not at this price range for sure!"

  • "Matyson deserves to be added to your regular list for dining. The quality of the food and its presentation were impressive as is the menu. Not the same old-same old, but challenging for the kitchen, as well. Add that this is a BYOB and it is unbeatable. The restaurant layout, long and narrow, make for some access problems and the higher noise level that one would like. The Owners have added some noise control materials, which is much appreciated."
