Diner Reviews
  • "We had lunch recently and were disappointed with the quality, amount and presentation of the food. Specifically, the Calamari appetizer is much smaller than previously and did not have enought sauce to accompany. It appeared as if the restaurant was economizing on the backs of its customers. In addition, a very mundane presentation compared to prior ones. The steak special sandwich was overcooked and unremarkable. The only winner was the squash soup. "

  • "My husband and I are big foodies and there are a lot of great restaurants in Philly, but Matyson is so reliably good that we prefer to stick with the place that never disappoints. The pre fixe menue is crazy good and is often consistent with seasonal favorites. And the service is incredibly great and they will go out of their way to accommodate requests. One of the best places to dine in Philly - by far. We often wish they offered take-out."

  • "The stand out here is really the service. Friendly, knowledgeable, not over bearing - exactly right. The fried oysters (signature dish) were perfectly done and accompanied by a lovely daikon and carrot slaw or confit type salad/garnish. Although the asparagus soup was cream and butter based the lovely spring flavor of the asparagus was front and center. Delish. The scallops were divine - perfectly done and not overwhelmed with the other flavors in the dish (short ribs). My dining parter had the gnocchi which she enjoyed but I found to be somewhat bland. Overall a rewarding night out after a grueling week. Thank you Matyson. "

  • "This was my second visit to Matyson but the first time in several years and my friend was a first-timer. There is something about intimate dining rooms that I really enjoy and the biggest thing that stands out was the continuity of the staff. From the initial greeting to bread service and delivery of dishes, everyone worked together for the greater good of everyone's dining experience. Couple that with great menu knowledge and willingness to meet certain dietary needs without question made our guy's night very memorable. Thanks again to Loren for great service and flawless offerings from the kitchen. I'll be back next week with friends for some fried oysters and duck breast. I could have those plates everyday! Great job, y'all!!!"

  • "Have been here a number of times for lunch, and it never fails to impress . Good selection of dishes from a small menus -- something for everyone. Service is attentive and caring. A particularly good choice for lunch when you are either having a business meeting or just want to have good conversation. "

  • "The food is bursting with flavor. This place rates right up there with the Chez Panisse's of the world. Amazing food!"

  • "We have dined at Matyson numerous times since its opening over 10 years ago. Through at least 2 different ownerships this place has constantly delivered outstanding food and service to match. Dishes are imaginative without becoming absurd, always created with the best ingredients."

  • "Took a group of co-workers here to celebrate a promotion. Matyson is on the small side, so if you are bringing a group, be sure to make a reservation - it fills up quickly. Food is very, very good - fresh ingredients and all dishes were prepared with care. Haven't been here for dinner but the vibe is good - although it's a bit noisy at least during the lunch rush."

  • "Great Lunch with clients Service was excellent The menu was limited but creative and the food was prepared perfectly. Only drawback, It's packed a bit to tight. Not enough room to pull your chair from the table and sit without a little side schimmy."

  • "I have patronaged Matyson for lunch, dinner and brunch. The menu is creative, and the food presentation is well thought out. The sweetbreads were placed on top of a waffle with a dollop of a savory sweet preserve. I called my entree "surf and turf" . It was three bay scallops cooked perfectly and accompanied by thin pieces of shortribs. My husband had the cavatelli with duck and rack of lamb with a truffle sauce. Portions are just right."

  • "One of the best and most reliably good restaurants in Philly"

  • "I have been to Matyson a handful of times and it always surprises me how delicious the food is. This experience was the first time I tried the tasting menu and I am so glad that I did. Each course was mouthwatering. Not all the courses were things that I would have ordered if given the choice but I felt that this expands ones flavor profile. For example, they served carrots three ways. I was expecting to be underwhelmed by this course but found myself scraping the last of the smoked hummus with my final bite of pickled carrot. My advice, buy a bottle of wine and go to Matyson on your next date... unless you hate delicious food in your mouth."

  • "This place is so amazing. The chef is super creative. The Rabitt special was amazing, as well as de Duck and the lamb with Black lentils. The monkfish was also very good. For desert, the chocolate brownie hit the right spit. The service is very professional and seamless."

  • "fantastic food and service and reasonable price, we were 4 and everyone raved about their dinners"

  • "I found this place to be overrated given its hype. While the food was tasty, I found the portions to be quite small for the price considering the straightforward nature of the dishes. There are many other BYOBs in Philadelphia where you can get much more food and originality for the money."

  • "This was an old favorite BYOB that was farm-to-table ahead of its time. Disappointing this time. Atmosphere and staff are great but the food is not as inventive or delicious as it was."

  • "Matyson consistently delivers excellent food! Scallops with the short rib entree was divine."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Matyson was a wonderful discovery. The food was excellent -- creative dishes, beautifully prepared. The room did feel a a little crowded, with very little space between tables; this wouldn't have been such an issue if the place had not been absolutely full -- which is itself a tribute to its overall high quality."

  • "Everything was terrific as always. My order of very rare beef came up perfect. The service was extremely attentive."

  • "Celebrated our son's Match Day for Residency last Friday. Food could not have been better! The chef really does a fantastic job. Kale salad was perfect with a light dressing. Steak frittes was tender and truffle frittes a perfect compliment. My son had the ginger squash soup as an appetizer. Delicious!"

  • "While the food was well crafted, the total experience leaves a lot to be desired. As other reviewers have pointed out, the noise level makes it difficult to even have a conversation. The cramped spacing of tables exacerbates the problem. It was even difficult to communicate with the servers, who had difficulty speaking above the din."

  • "I had the Ricotta Cavatelli, Monkfish and Coconut Cream Pie - each was absolutely delicious."

  • "Always good. Table was ready even though I was early. Server very pleasant and helpful without being over-bearing, Food (it was lunch so we just had salads) was nice. I have been there before and would certainly return. It's a good, welcoming place for lunch or dinner with a friend or colleague."

  • "I came here for a birthday celebration and got the scallops and braised short-rib. I had such a hard time deciding on an entree because they have such a great menu! The food was absolutely amazing and definitely a great atmosphere for a dinner date. Can't wait to go back again."

  • "Matyson is a true Philadelphia restaurant gem! The ever changing week-days menus are well conceived and excellently cooked - and a good deal. Service is attentive and professional and the atmosphere cozy and intimate. The best thing, however, is the food. Matyson is a BYOB restaurant and provides good quality stem-ware for wines, an added bonus. One more thing: the restaurant is open Monday nights."

  • "Informal, welcoming, relaxed, youthful and precise. On the menu for out visit the Ricotta Cavatelli, Pork Chop and Strip Steak were all superb as was the dessert we shared..a chocolate semifreddo. We were in Philadelphia for only one day otherwise we would have gone back the next evening to try other dishes. The space is intimate , well designed and comfortable. The restaurant is a bargain for the quality of the food and the service. And this is a BYOB venue so make sure you bring something special for yourself too. The food will stand up to whatever you choose. By the way...the music was unobtrusive and terrifically chosen."

  • "Gave it a second chance.- we won't go back. My fish dish was not fresh. Price point high for the quality of the food. Used to be one of our go to restaurants many years ago sorry it is now so lackluster."

  • "This was our third time eating at Matyson. Both the appetizers and the main dishes were superlative! The waitstaff was very pleasant and accommodating of dietary restrictions. We made a spur of the moment decision to go out to dinner on a Friday night and were able to get a 6:45 reservation calling at 6:00 PM. This small restaurant was full and lively and still the noise level was very low. Great food, great staff, great ambiance, BYOB, love it!"

  • "It is incredible that the food can be so imaginative yet the flavors so impeccably balanced meal after meal after meal. Matyson is consistently among the few best restaurants in Philadelphia."

  • "This is my first time at Matyson. Small restaurant with dim lighting. Menu is not extensive but what I ordered, Shepard's Pie, was very good. My co-worker ordered a vegetarian wrap and she really enjoyed it. Lunch was not too expensive. Service was quick. More people came in as time went on and it can get noisy but we were still able to hear our conversation. The BEST part for me was the dessert. I had the Coconut Cream Pie and it was delicious! Might go back for dinner in the future."

  • "The food was excellent. In this case the negative is not even about the servers' attention; they were attentive. Just not sufficiently knowledgable. When I questioned the ancho hollandaise of one appetizer I made it clear that I intensly dislike spicy food. Okay, I ordered something else since plain hollonadaise was not an option. No complaint there. Then I ordered duck with hoi sin as a main course. The server did not say the hoi sin has extra spicy additions. (It had.) At a restaurant where despite being a BYOB dinner for three runs to over $200 with the tip, that's not acceptable. Wonderfully cooked food demands servers who are familiar with the dishes and attentive to the diner's choices/predilections."

  • "I like to cook and am pretty adventurous. I am frustrated when restaurants offer something I could easily do. That never happens at Matyson. The skilled preparation and presentation at Matyson is always wonderful. From the sweet breads to the striped bass a wonderful value of delicious food."

  • "We visited Matyson to celebrate my friend's birthday. It is a small, intimate restaurant. We visited on a very cold day and definitely wanted to sit away from the door. If the restaurant is crowded this could be a problem as there are several tables very close to the door. The food was very good. The service was a bit slow for lunch but since it was a special lunch we didn't mind waiting. This could be a problem if you are held to a one hour lunch. I would visit again for a special lunch."

  • "we really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere was very nice, great byob! Would only like to see at least some items that would be more simple like chicken or steak with simple ingredients as options for guest that might come with a foodie but want to enjoy something tasty as well."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Really didn't like the menu. Only 1 salad on the menu and for non- meat eaters menu is so-so, and I don't like restaurants who serve Foie-gras....also, you are one of those restaurants who thinks more ingredients, the better. Won't be coming back"

  • "I took my boyfriend as a surprise for his birthday. After 45 minutes of waiting for our mussel appetizer, our server came to inform us that "they had lost our ticket" and "could we remind her of what we ordered". We had never been to Matyson before, the food was great when it finally came after waiting and waiting-- but our server didn't even apologize that it took over an hour to get our appetizer and not to mention our food. Nor were we offered anything their clear mistake."
