  • "Took a group of co-workers here to celebrate a promotion. Matyson is on the small side, so if you are bringing a group, be sure to make a reservation - it fills up quickly. Food is very, very good - fresh ingredients and all dishes were prepared with care. Haven't been here for dinner but the vibe is good - although it's a bit noisy at least during the lunch rush."

  • "I have patronaged Matyson for lunch, dinner and brunch. The menu is creative, and the food presentation is well thought out. The sweetbreads were placed on top of a waffle with a dollop of a savory sweet preserve. I called my entree "surf and turf" . It was three bay scallops cooked perfectly and accompanied by thin pieces of shortribs. My husband had the cavatelli with duck and rack of lamb with a truffle sauce. Portions are just right."

  • "I have been to Matyson a handful of times and it always surprises me how delicious the food is. This experience was the first time I tried the tasting menu and I am so glad that I did. Each course was mouthwatering. Not all the courses were things that I would have ordered if given the choice but I felt that this expands ones flavor profile. For example, they served carrots three ways. I was expecting to be underwhelmed by this course but found myself scraping the last of the smoked hummus with my final bite of pickled carrot. My advice, buy a bottle of wine and go to Matyson on your next date... unless you hate delicious food in your mouth."

  • "While the food was well crafted, the total experience leaves a lot to be desired. As other reviewers have pointed out, the noise level makes it difficult to even have a conversation. The cramped spacing of tables exacerbates the problem. It was even difficult to communicate with the servers, who had difficulty speaking above the din."

  • "Informal, welcoming, relaxed, youthful and precise. On the menu for out visit the Ricotta Cavatelli, Pork Chop and Strip Steak were all superb as was the dessert we shared..a chocolate semifreddo. We were in Philadelphia for only one day otherwise we would have gone back the next evening to try other dishes. The space is intimate , well designed and comfortable. The restaurant is a bargain for the quality of the food and the service. And this is a BYOB venue so make sure you bring something special for yourself too. The food will stand up to whatever you choose. By the way...the music was unobtrusive and terrifically chosen."

  • "This was our third time eating at Matyson. Both the appetizers and the main dishes were superlative! The waitstaff was very pleasant and accommodating of dietary restrictions. We made a spur of the moment decision to go out to dinner on a Friday night and were able to get a 6:45 reservation calling at 6:00 PM. This small restaurant was full and lively and still the noise level was very low. Great food, great staff, great ambiance, BYOB, love it!"

  • "This is my first time at Matyson. Small restaurant with dim lighting. Menu is not extensive but what I ordered, Shepard's Pie, was very good. My co-worker ordered a vegetarian wrap and she really enjoyed it. Lunch was not too expensive. Service was quick. More people came in as time went on and it can get noisy but we were still able to hear our conversation. The BEST part for me was the dessert. I had the Coconut Cream Pie and it was delicious! Might go back for dinner in the future."

  • "The food was excellent. In this case the negative is not even about the servers' attention; they were attentive. Just not sufficiently knowledgable. When I questioned the ancho hollandaise of one appetizer I made it clear that I intensly dislike spicy food. Okay, I ordered something else since plain hollonadaise was not an option. No complaint there. Then I ordered duck with hoi sin as a main course. The server did not say the hoi sin has extra spicy additions. (It had.) At a restaurant where despite being a BYOB dinner for three runs to over $200 with the tip, that's not acceptable. Wonderfully cooked food demands servers who are familiar with the dishes and attentive to the diner's choices/predilections."

  • "We visited Matyson to celebrate my friend's birthday. It is a small, intimate restaurant. We visited on a very cold day and definitely wanted to sit away from the door. If the restaurant is crowded this could be a problem as there are several tables very close to the door. The food was very good. The service was a bit slow for lunch but since it was a special lunch we didn't mind waiting. This could be a problem if you are held to a one hour lunch. I would visit again for a special lunch."

  • "I took my boyfriend as a surprise for his birthday. After 45 minutes of waiting for our mussel appetizer, our server came to inform us that "they had lost our ticket" and "could we remind her of what we ordered". We had never been to Matyson before, the food was great when it finally came after waiting and waiting-- but our server didn't even apologize that it took over an hour to get our appetizer and not to mention our food. Nor were we offered anything their clear mistake."

  • "I recently when to Matyson for the 2nd time and felt obligated to write a review since everything from the service to the food was amazing. For my appetizer I ordered the foie gras and it was melt in your mouth perfection. The crispy duck skin that accompanies it is also a treat. I ordered the new york strip steak which was cooked exactly to a medium rare. However, next time I go back I will order the sea bass as I did on my first visit to the restaurant. I was lucky enough that one of our other patrons filled up on appetizers and let me finish his meal. I definitely plan on going back in the near future and recommend everyone to try it."

  • "My husband and I went to Matyson for Valentine's Day. My husband chose this restaurant because it was BYO which is always a plus. Good ambiance. We were a little closer to our neighbors than we would prefer. That is not an uncommon complaint from us being Philadelphia transplants from the Midwest. We had the parmesan asparagus soup & squash chipotle to start with- both excellent. My husband wanted to buy more to take home for lunch during the week. His entre was the steak with chimichurri and I ordered the lamb. The steak was phenomenal. The lamb was good but not great. For dessert, chocolate mousse cake & apple gallette. Both great! I would bring guests here when they come to Philadelphia."
