A word from Matt's Red Rooster Grill
Matt’s Red Rooster Grill is a contemporary American bistro paying homage to a wood fired grill that “brings out the best flavors” of traditional American cuisine, reinvented creatively. A CIA (Hyde Park) graduate, Chef Matt McPherson stays true to his local roots integrating the finest seasonal ingredients, sourced from local family farms & day boat fisherman into his unique dishes. The restored Victorian home provides a relaxed elegant atmosphere to catch up with friends, celebrate special occasions, enjoy a romantic dinner, or impress an important client. As Matt’s creations pamper your taste buds, the staff indulges you with rock star service, the perfect remedy for a long day or week. With two floors, downstairs feeds off the warmth & energy of a bustling open kitchen. Four seats at the Chef's counter let you feel the heat, as you watch Matt & his team from a perch over the grill. Upstairs is away from the bustle while the porch provides relaxed & refreshing outdoor dining. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I haven't been to Matt's in about maybe 3 years and I liked it back then. However, on this trip my wife and I thought the food was unremarkable considering the cost. I had a ribeye steak and it was way over cooked, I asked for med rare, and it came with a brown gravy on it which basically over powers the steak. We also heard another table was having issues with their steaks too. I ordered the romaine lettuce which is grilled slightly with parmesan cheese served warm. Mine came almost cold and was barely grilled. So they reversed the process, lettuce not enough and steak too much. Flemington has such poor restaurants, too bad this one is slipping a bit downhill."

  • "Matt's special dining features are mid-week treat. Lobster served 4 ways for $44 -- a great idea. Our party loved the dining on the porch;and Seth, our waiter, was exceptionally attentive."

  • " I have been there multiple times and each time it was just fair. Upstairs dinning is loud! The only reason I have gone back was convience when meeting friends."

  • "First time and won't be our last. Food was superb and we had the pleasure of sitting at Chef table. Everyone was attentive, not overbearing and atmosphere had the right vibe for any occasion. Selected steaks for dinner and they were AMAZING and the sauce was go good it was drinkable. If the fried green tomatoes are on the menu they too are must have. Can't say enough great things about this place except u must go and see for yourself..... thanks Chef Matt for the strawberry dessert at the end of our dinner. U made someone's night even more special with that extra thought."

  • "If in the area, you must visit Matt's Red Rooster Grill. We make a special trip to Flemington just to go there. The menu is very original, and always delicious. There is nothing like the open fire grill flavor. In the summer the porch is open for dining, which is nice. Although it is a bit pricey, it is BYOB so that makes it very affordable."

  • "My husband and I had dinner at Matt's earlier this week. He had the tuna and avocado appetizer; I had fried heirloom tomatoes. Dinner was rack of lamb and coffee-rubbed steak. Everything was delicious and cooked just right. Dave, our server, was fantastic! This is one of our favorite restaurants!"

  • "The restaurant is a gem! My husband and I enjoyed our first experience there, and we left with all smiles. From the moment you walked in you just knew you were in great hands! The service and the staff were great and knowledgable to answer every question with honesty. The prices were spot on. The chef - let's call him "mister perfect" (as our meals were flawless) cooks in an open kitchen which is great to watch and it's nice to see someone take such pride in their work. I highly recommend a meal there, you won't be disappointed, unless you're a fast food junkie!!"

  • "Our favorite place to celebrate special occasions. Be prepared to spend a bit, but the food is worth it. Friends recently dined at the Culinary Institute of America, spent a comparable amount, and said the dinner at Matt's was far superior. A nice variety is offered, and the specials never disappoint. Interesting blends of flavors, beautiful presentations."

  • "Took our sons here for July 4. Food was amazing as usual. Service wasn't as impeccable as it usually is. Salads came before appetizers. Server apologized and took salads back but then other wait staff brought salads back. Ended up having salads same time as appetizers. Usually not a big deal but I guess I expect more for the high cost of this restaurant."

  • "Besides the food being excellent, so was the service. We never felt rushed and he explained the " Specials " and made great recommendations. This was the first time we went to Matt's but it will not be the last. At last a local restaurant that is really special."

  • "One of our favorite restaurants. Food is consistently outstanding, service is professional and setting is charming. And BYOB makes this a very good value."

  • "clean food and great flavors. My husband had the 30 day dry aged t-bone. it was seasoned well and cooked to a perfect medium rare and a bit on the rarer side which was perfect for him. I had the crab stuffed cod special which had a citrus buerre blanc. the light taste of orange was a welcome flavor. went on a sunday night and it was not crowded at all. small atmosphere in a quaint remodeled victorian home."

  • "Went there this past weekend and had an amazing time. Went there with my boyfriend for a celebratory dinner and had a wonderful meal. Bf got the grilled romaine appetizer and enjoyed it. We got the bacon-wrapped filet and Rojo Coffee Ribeye for entrees, both flavorful. I think our cooking specifications may've been switched (I asked for medium and got rare, bf asked for rare and got medium). Still great though!! Had the peanut butter ganache and bread pudding for dessert, both very good. Great service too. Wish I could go there all the time!"

  • "Wait staff is very knowledgeable and professional. Even though reservations are required service is courteous and not rushed. Food is outstanding. Menu is modest in size (this is a good thing) and change is often based upon availability of local ingredients."

  • "Everything about our evening was delightful. The menu has a nice range of options and the 30 day aged steak was perfect! The restaurant offers a nice slow-paced meal with gourmet options without being pretentious. A great spot for a delicious meal and conversation!"

  • "There were four of us at dinner. We all ordered something different. Everyone at the table truly enjoyed what they ordered. The tuna and salmon were excellent. The grilled Romaine is always a favorite. The only issue we had is that if you sit downstairs near the grill, the room can get very hot."

  • "All in our party were pleased with the selections available on the menu and there was nothing left on anyone's plate. Lots of "ummm, this is good"!"

  • "Our experience started with walking in and waiting for someone to greet us or even acknowledge us. It was awkward to just stand around and wonder when a hostess would arrive. The style of the waitress was to much like trying to be my buddy, my husband and I felt it was unprofessional and more like an act. Our food was pretty good except my strip steak was awfully fatty. One pet peeve of mine is being served cappuccino separately from the dessert, which happened I feel they should be served together. If I waited to drink my cappuccino with dessert it would have been cold.I had the key lime tart for dessert the crust was so thick and hard you needed a knife to cut through it and it wasn't very tasty either."

  • "We came here to celebrate a birthday. We each ordered a different item from the menu - fish, beef and poultry and each one was excellent. The portions were spot on. The service was attentive but not bothersome. Love the open grill. The only complaint is the noise level was really loud in the small dining room. It was distracting to a small party like ours that sat nearby and was trying to have a conversation. Other than that, we loved the restaurant and will be back!!"

  • "My husband and our neighbors celebrated our anniversary here recently. The food was outstanding and the service very good. We have been here before and have always been pleased. We like the fact that Matt's is BYOB so we can bring the wines which we like and can concentrate on trying interesting dishes without the bill getting out of hand. Our neighbors were also impressed (first timers; I'm sure they'll be back)"

  • "We had heard about Matt's and had high expectations, sadly they weren't met. The night's special appetizer was a lobster spring roll, it was apparently pan fried as it was browned slightly on one side but it still ended with a wet slimy wrap around an unmemorable filling, we love lobster just not this appy, it set a bad tone as this was a special of the night. The crab & asparagus appy was tasty however. We tried two different salads both of which we were happy with. My main course was a coffee rubbed rib eye that consisted of as much inedible fat as it did meat, when you are getting thirty plus for a steak you hope it would be memorable, this was memorable but not in a good way. Our waiter was awesome but the food was nothing to remember."

  • "The appetizers were wonderful how we were not impressed with our dinner entrees. For being known for their steaks, they were mediocre. And that's after having to take it back for not cooking it right. I asked for medium and I got medium rare! My husband steak had to no flavor. It's embarrassing when you have to ask for some type of steak sauce to give it some flavor."

  • "We had a reservation for four at 815 pm on a Saturday, seated at 8:45 pm. 30 minutes of standing around waiting for our table. Two other parties were seated ahead of us at tables of 4 who came in after us. When asked why, the hostess told us because they had requested a downstairs table. "Our" table was upstairs so naturally we had to wait to accommodate the special request of people who came in after us. food was hit or miss. stuffed poblano appetizer was fantastic, as was the ribeye, except that I ordered medium rare and it came as a perfect medium. My wife ordered the special aged porterhouse medium, it came medium rare, so we switched. medium rare aged porterhouse should be fantastic, it was good, not near great."

  • "As always the food was excellent. I went with my husband on a saturday night. they were busy but service was very good. I ordered a cod dish that was fantastic. my husband ordered the ribs - amazing. I dont think we have ever gone and not ordered the ribs - they are always to die for."
