A word from Matt's Red Rooster Grill
Matt’s Red Rooster Grill is a contemporary American bistro paying homage to a wood fired grill that “brings out the best flavors” of traditional American cuisine, reinvented creatively. A CIA (Hyde Park) graduate, Chef Matt McPherson stays true to his local roots integrating the finest seasonal ingredients, sourced from local family farms & day boat fisherman into his unique dishes. The restored Victorian home provides a relaxed elegant atmosphere to catch up with friends, celebrate special occasions, enjoy a romantic dinner, or impress an important client. As Matt’s creations pamper your taste buds, the staff indulges you with rock star service, the perfect remedy for a long day or week. With two floors, downstairs feeds off the warmth & energy of a bustling open kitchen. Four seats at the Chef's counter let you feel the heat, as you watch Matt & his team from a perch over the grill. Upstairs is away from the bustle while the porch provides relaxed & refreshing outdoor dining. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful time. Our table was upstairs, comfortable and by the window. Our server was fantastic - kept everything as it should be but not hovering. The food was wonderful -- we had the cheese plate -- to die for! My mom and husband both had the pork with a bourbon mustard glaze and I had the blue cheese encrusted filet -- all were devoured! The desert was wonderful - I had peanut butter mousse covered in chocolate and my Mom had bread pudding with two sauces. They put a sparkling candle and wrote happy birthday on her plate! She was so happy. We've been a few times and will be back!"

  • "We dined at Matt's back in May when we were visiting the area. Back then I told my husband I wanted to come back for my birthday celebration this year. This time we had our adult children with us to celebrate mine and our son's birthdays. What a fabulous time we had! The food was amazing, as was the service. You can't go wrong with what ever you choose on the menu. And even though we arrived early, they were able to accomadate us. Can't wait for another opportunity to visit Flemington and dine at Matt's."

  • "Matt's is a gem in the small rustic town of Flemington. The food is always reliably excellent and the service and environment are top notch. Highly recommended."

  • "Matt's is one of my favorite places for dinner. The food is always outstanding, the menu always offers a few fish, steak and chicken options, great appetizers and the menu changes so if you go once a month, you will have a few new choices. Normally the service has been outstanding, on this last night I think they were short a waiter so the service was slower than what I have always had, but it was still better than most."

  • "We love Matt's but we don't go often becuz it is really pricey. The food is wonderful--they change their menu up often and the service is excellent. It is BYOB and the price is still high."

  • "We were recommended to have the strip steak by our waiter and a little disappointed."

  • "From the moment we walked in, it felt like home. We were promptly seated and greeted by our waiter Matt. We were informed of the specials which made deciding even harder! From the appetizers to the grilled romaine to the entrees, every minute and every bite was delicious! Our waiter, Matt, was attentive, and our water glasses always filled. We were also treated to a nice surprise appetizer from the chef for a prior review :) We ALWAYS enjoy our trip up to Flemington and to Matt's Red Rooster and HIGHLY recommend it to others!"

  • "We went during restaurant week so had the benfit of a prix fixe menu and the regular one--as well as two specials. I had the day boat scallops with three different sauces--terrfic and melt in your mouth! Our server, Dave, was very professional and struck the right balance of being attentive yet not overbearing."

  • "I've been eating at Matt's since he opened years ago. I have never had a bad meal there or a single complaint about ANYTHING! One of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at and I've traveled extensively. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this place as a choice for dinner!"

  • "My daughter and I went to Matt's during restaurant week because I moved to Flemington about a year ago and have been wanting to try this restaurant. We had the most amazing dinner and I had a risotto that can only compare to the risotto I had in Italy. The appetizers were incredible as were the desserts. Our server, Dave, made sure we were well taken care of. Extremely wonderful experience! Congrats Matt's Red Rooster Grill!"

  • "Love this restaurant, I have never had a bad meal. Apple Wood fired steak and salmon are incredible and my favorite. Great service and food."

  • "We chose this restaurant primary because of a very positive review we had seen. The description of the steaks was not off. The two we shared were fantastic and very different. We tried the sous vide strip steak which had an incredible tenderness to it. But our real favorite was the ribeye with a demi glaze that was truly great. Super flavorful as the ribeye melted in your mouth. Our salads were wonderful--my wife loved her grilled romaine with a creamy parmesan dressing. Try the green apple balsamic with the bread. What a treat!"

  • "We have eaten here several times and always had a very good meal, but this was an exception. The upstairs dining room was so noisy that you couldn't hear your companions. A pork-belly appetizer wasn't crisp and felt as if one was eating just fat. A butternut squash soup was excellent, however. 3 out of 4 entrees had issues: 2 rib-eye steaks were full of fat and grizzle, and as they were covered in a dark demi-glaze, you couldn't see to cut around the offending parts. A cod entree was dry and tasteless and the accompanying vegetables unidentifiable. A creme brulee wasn't properly set (which they did replace). The remaining parts of the meal were very good as was the service, but at Matt's prices everything should have been."

  • "Restaurant was overbooked...we had to wait at least 20 minutes before being seated and even longer for the server to take our order. This translates to starting our meal at 9:30pm with a reservation at 8:30pm."

  • "Absolutely delicious from start to finish, can't wait to try more menu items. I would highly recommend the truffled strip steak and apple bread pudding!"

  • "I had been trying to get here for several months and was happy that I finally did. The food was very good, with a diverse menu. They were willing to make menu changes with no difficulty. Service was good, attentive, but not overly. I was impressed that almost everything was made " in house". I will certainly return."

  • "I was looking for a restaurant to meet a client and his wife in Flemington. The reviews led me to Matt's. Although it is a VERY small restaurant and a pricey meal... It was delicious and filling. The atmosphere was comfortable and the service was great. Don't forget to BYO!"

  • "Four of us went for the special Mardi Gras menu and we tacked on a couple of lobster tails to share. The appetizer of crawfish etouffee was superb, with grits and anduoullee sausage. The baked catfish was very good with an excellent remoulade sauce. Normally desserts are not my thing, but the bourbon bread pudding with gelato was fantastic. While that was certainly plenty of food, adding a tail was icing on the cake. Topped off with a cup of Rojo's coffee. A fine evening. We enjoy Matt's special menus as often as we can. They are always creative and well done. Looking forward to the next one!"

  • "Great service. We were a group of three. We had cioppino, the filet and lobster combo, and a lovely vegetarian plate made up special. We also had the grilled romaine, bread pudding, creme brûlée and ice cream with berries. Everything was so tasty and served so attractively. And the bread with the green apple balsamic chutney was just heavenly. Always a fantastic dining experience at Matt's!"

  • "Perfect in every way. High quality fresh food without a stuffy environment. Come as you are stay as long as you like. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We had the rib special and the seafood pasta special both were delicious. The desserts change daily but are always top notch. Our server was exceptional, we will be back!"

  • "little disappointed in my most recent visit as my steak was severely undercooked. not sure what happened as it is normally an amazing restaurant. I love BYOB and this is one of the best non Italian ones around. highly recommended, the stuffed poblano peppers appetizer is out of this world good IMO."

  • "Went for my birthday dinner with small group, as I had heard good things about the food. Went on a Sunday at about 5 pm, and it was pretty bustling. Waiter was very nice, knowledgeable about menu, attentive. The establishment is in a large former house ( I believe) adding to the coziness factor (there is an upstairs, which I did not visit). Everyone loved their food, orders from mixed grill (filet/lobster), a tasty red snapper plate. Get the bread pudding thing for desert, it's awesome. I would go back to sample more of the menu."

  • "Wonderful service, beautiful room, and an comprehensive menu. My husband had a New York Strip steak that was done to perfection, and I ordered the 3-course Pork Roll prix fixe dinner and it was creative, surprising, and delicious!"

  • "Matt's Red Rooster never disappoints. Quality food, great service, quaint atmosphere and it's a BYO establishment. Just had to try the 3 Course Pork Roll Prix Fixe menu the other day. Very creative presentation and needless to say quite tasty. You would have to be a buffoon to screw up pork roll! Kudos to Matt for trying something unique and fun. He also gets my vote for marketing genius of the year for figuring out how to charge $50+ for $1.50 worth of pork roll! Keep up the good work. We'll be back."

  • "Awesome and exceptional. A little off of Main Street you don't quite anticipate the level of cuisine and service offered. A class restaurant but extremely intimate and comfortable especially on the 2nd floor. Food was high quality and prepared perfectly. The portion size was perfect. I'd rather have high quality vs quantity."

  • "The first time, the food and the service were excellent. This time, the food was poor (the "tuna two ways" looked and tasted as though it had been made by someone who was trying to copy the dish, without knowing how to do it), the risotto had the consistency of wall paste and little flavor, the cobbler was inedible, it was so dry and flavorless, and the bread pudding needed a knife to cute it, it was cold and stale. Our waiter ignored us, and I had to flag down other waiters to get refills of drinks (though I never managed to persuade anyone to give me a second glass of water). All in all, a very bad experience."

  • "Visited Matt's on Valentine's Day, and they had both their regular menu as well as a Prix Fixe offering for the day. As always, all of our meals were excellent with the Duck Two Way's being the best. The service was attentive but not too overbearing, and the atmosphere was just right for either couples or groups celebrating the day. Can't wait to go back there again."
