Not inexpensive but an excellent value, all things considered."

  • "Dinner for my husband's Birthday and they truly made it special. We were given a complimentary champagne toast, he received a tasty desert and a very nice birthday card signed by the staff. Our entrees took a while for a party of 4 but the food was great! Great service as well. Definitely on the expensive side but overall it was a delightful experience!"

Our server took such good care of us and had the kitchen add special touches due to it being a celebration.They also accommodated me being vegetarian and my dish of pasta and veggies was so flavorful. Also love sitting at the bar in the M Lounge before being seated. We sat there even though the table was ready because the ambiance was fun and the martinis, delicious. Great overall experience for many occasions."

  • "This is my go-to restaurant for any romantic or special occasion. The service is impeccable and the food is delicious and inventive. Also, there are original and yummy wines by the glass which can be hard to find sometimes. Overall one of the best restaurants in Jacksonville, if not the best!"

  • "This was our first time at Matthews. We ordered three different meals - each was outstanding in it's own right. The pork chop was the best we ever tasted - serve on the rib bone and cooked to perfection. The grouper was served grilled over a base of potatoes and vegetables - Yum Our guest had the duck breast and it was perfect - pink and very flavorful. This is a special occasion restaurant that will be first on our list."

However, I was shocked that a restaurant of this caliber would allow people to come in for dinner with their dog. The dog was clearly not a service dog. I do hope this does not happen during a future visit."

  • "Warm and friendly welcome , great atmosphere. Food quite average and long wait to get it. Gnocchi sure didn't taste homemade, I suspect it was extruded from a machine like bullets. Wine selection was excellent but server was slow to keep our glasses filled. A couple seated adjacent to us waited longer than an hour for their food. Friendliness does not make up for poor execution."

  • "This restaurant is tucked away off a residential area of the San Marco district of Jacksonville. As we walked in the door we were treated as special guests. The friendly staff was attentive to the smallest detail. The food from the appetizers to the entrees to dessert was beyond compare. Excellent presentation and I would say probably the best meal I have ever had!"

  • "I went here to take my then-girlfriend (now my fiancee) to dinner on her birthday. All the servers (or waiters, whatever you want to call them) were very hospitable. Your water glass will always be full. Scott took really good care of us that evening, making sure we had everything we needed. The cheese sampler was the best. I love bleu cheese, and I'm used to it being super funky even in small amounts. But the bleu cheese here was very very creamy and could stand on its own, but paired with a fig or some raw honey and you have an amazing bite. I would come back here just to sample cheese and salumi with a sparkling water."

  • "The staff at Matthew's once again satisfied in every area. The bartender was engaging and our pre-dinner drinks were perfect. Dinner was near perfect - the salads, the splendid carpaccio, the mains (duck breast and herbed chicken), and side of beets were all perfect. The little extras make for a special meal - like the butter salted and with a touch of olive oil and the selection of interesting salts w/ dinner (the salt with truffle was amazing). We only have two recommendations - warm bread is much more enjoyable and my wife doesn't eat cheese so was disappointed to see unadvertised shredded cheese on her salad. Of course, our server offered to have another made but we were going to a show and made due."

  • "This was our first time at Matthew's. We were treated like royalty. The food was spectacular. I had grey grouper that was succulent. My husband had duck breast that had gorgeously crispy skin and juicy meat. The wine list is wonderful and we finished off with a chocolate souffle that was surprisingly spicy in a really good way."

  • "While Matthews provided impeccable service, the food was very unremarkable. The ambiance was good and the wine list very comprehensive. Our first time visit was on Valentines day. The menu was limited, but we chose the $95 (per person), four course selection to get an overall feel for the cuisine. The presentation was impressive, but the portions were minimalist at best and did nothing for the palate. Including a modest bottle of wine the entire tab was $231 (excluding tip). I would have expected a much better experience for the price. Unfortunately, I could not in good faith recommend this venue. We do not plan to return."

  • "Our table was ready with no delay, however I asked for a romantic table since it was Valentines day. We were sat right I mean right next to the service area. It was as you could imagine very awcward and loud. I would have just left after being seated. But our server Sarah came to save the day. She was professional knowledgable and sinced my uncomfortableness with the situation. Great service. The food was very good. My favorite course was the scallop appetizer. All I can say is it was one of top 5 things I've ever eaten. So in summery other then the disregard for my seating request it was a very nice time."

  • "A fine dining restaurant. Matthews gets high marks for locally sourced ,organic & inventive dishes. Love the duck. arrived early Sat. pre-symphony. Waiter did not have knowledge of the caviar selection and a few others. Told no duck breast. Ordered the bourbon mint milkshake for dessert -oops out of ice cream freezer is broken. When we dine at a fine restaurant we long for the "experience" not the maintenance issues. Marble slab creamery across the street? the scallop dish was the best of the 4. Mexican chocolate soufflé was exceptional. Rebecca, the French culinary inst grad came out, chatted, shared her technique - steeping fine cinnamon sticks,cardamom,cracked pepper into the cream -best chocolate soufflé. Would we go back- YES."

  • "Friends recommended this place. Because it was our first visit, we chose the tasting 6 course menu and splurged with the wine pairings. The excellent service offered to us by Brian brought each course at a relaxed and perfect pace. He responded to our tastes by slightly adjusting wine selections and replacing a dessert for my husband with one he liked better. Each course was exquisite in its presentation and delectable to each bite. We were in Jacksonville for our first time at a conference , when we return next year , we will certainly return to explore more of this wonderful restaurant."

  • "Need to start by saying this is not a place I could afford often. I was asked atleast three times if it was a special occasion (reservation confirmation, hostess and waiter) so that alone should tell you something. The price is well worth the experience though! We opted for the chef's tasting experience, which is a 7 course meal. The first plate to come out, I noticed how small the portion was and was afraid I'd end up ordering a pizza later- I was wrong. So don't get discouraged by that. By far the best food I've tasted yet, and the scallop is still being talked about between me and my girlfriend, two days later. If you can afford it, I'd recommend it!"
