The restaurant started the fine dining scene in Jacksonville -- no small feat. But, the meal we had last week was off the mark. My wife's divers scallops and sweet potatoes were excellent, but my gray grouper was overcooked, and the corn stuff (don't know what else to call it) it was lying in was uninspired. The charcuterie plate we started with was excellent in taste, but for the money, very stingy. The soufflé to finish was chewy.
Our benchmark for an expensive meal has always had two factors: (1) we couldn't make it at home, or; (2) we couldn't do the dish as well. This meal missed on both criterion. We enjoyed the pork shoulder and rack of lamb entrees with fried brussel sprouts. Dessert was a key lime preparation that was delicious. My well-done beef tenderloin really was both well-done and tasty. Service was impeccable. Water glasses were kept filled, which is a big plus. The capstone was the Meyer lemon souffle with raspberry creme anglaise. Who knew that Meyer lemon and raspberry flavors would meld so well together? The bar area is bright and energetic. The interior of the dining area is chic and romantic complete with a chef's table at their open kitchen. Our waiter was attentive, first asking if we were celebrating a special occasion. The menu had the best local and innovative offerings each category had to offer. I had Arctic Char - grilled perfectly with a basil pistachio topping. My friend had Diver Scallops with sweet potato, which were sweet and cooked perfectly. We had Brussel Sprouts as a side - fried and topped with Parmesan Cheese...delicious! We were pleasantly greeted and seated and everyone who came in contact with us knew it was our anniversary and made us feel special. After a brief discussion of any dietary concerns (I dont do cheese) we were pleasantly surprised by both the diversity and uniqueness of the food as well as the spot on wine pairings that accompanied each course. We had diver scallops, veal scallopini and pork chop for mains and all were prepared perfectly.
The banana creme brûlée was disappointing. Not bad just not like creme brûlée except for the brûlée.

Our server, Sarah, was cordial and helped us understand the dishes and make decisions on beer and liqueurs.
Also the price was right.

We dined with friends who were having dinner at Matthews for the first time. They agreed the food was top notch ... the black olive bread rolls, the different main courses of beef, veal, pasta and the Char were delicious. The wine was full bodied and accompanied the meal well. Our dinner companions especially enjoyed the chocolate torte dessert. The two of them saw to our every need and provided a very memorable occasion. We had a 6:00 PM reservation because we were headed downtown to a play at the Moran Theater. When we told Kenny our plans, he responded: "What time would you like to leave for the play?" We responded with 7:15 - 7:20 PM. He said simply "No problem", and he was correct. He and Jason expedited our meal, served it very elegantly and met us at the door on our way out at 7:20, thanking us for dining with him at Matthew's. Food was excellent, service was impeccable and they absolutely assured we would be a repeat customer. One diner had tenderloin steak that was about the best he'd ever put in his mouth. Another had divers scallops - excellent. The sides were also excellent.
