Our group loved the ambiance, service and especially the unique food options. We shared some small plates to try special flavors and want to rave about the grilled avocado, corn creamed bulee and grilled brussel sprouts. So yummy. Try it.

I went with my sister a few months ago when the just re-opened and it was really excellent. Great menu, very festive atomosphere, excellent service. This time I wanted to take my husband for our anniversary. I called for a reservation and let the hostess know that it was our anniversary and that we wanted to sit out on the porch. The hostess never acknowledged our anniversary and proceeded to seat us inside. No one ever acknowledged our anniversary. The menu was condensed compared to a few months ago. The place was quite empty- not at all like the vibrant spot of just a few months ago. The food was very tasty and the service was very good.

Loved our server & the food. Was a bit worried about due to previous reviews & even the old Managment were a bit difficult. Only complaint was the wine list which shame on them - where were are all the local wines by the glass? we're in wine country & ordered a French Montrachet - WTF!

Wow is an understatement! I've known about Mattei's Tavern for years- and I cannot believe that I haven't been there before now. What a jewel! The setting is a historic stagecoach stop and tavern. What history! We were there for Sunday Brunch and the food was fabulous. The also had a guitar/singer (think Jack Johnson) on a small outdoor stage nestled under the trees who was very talented and just loud enough to make the ambiance perfect. They also have a double Bocce Ball court and a Corn Hole (who came up with that name?) game board in the grass.

My 2nd visit since new ownership and it seems a shame they didn't do a deal with the talented "Brothers", instead they were turned loose to open 2 competing restaurants. To me it seems the "locals" have abandoned the place. I ate in the kitchen area which for the past 10 years has always been busy, but tonight I was the only customer! The Brothers used to serve up the best bread basket in the valley, now you get a terrible pop-over that was so tough, I had to use a knife to cut it. Ordered a glass of syrah and they were out of it and didn't replace it! (and this is in wine country with 25 tasting rooms 2 blocks away) Arugula salad had bitter 4 inch stems on. Chicken was good. Server Robert would disappear for 15 minutes at a time.

Fantastic food and awesome ambience - service was slightly slow - but we were there while there was some sort of big event going on right outside the restaurant, so we assume that might have been the cause. Otherwise no complaints and still your absolutely best call for dining when in the Santa Ynez area.

This was our second time eating at Mattei's. The first time we sat on the enclosed porch - brighter, but noisier, too. This time we sat inside and the noise level was perfect....very quiet. The food here is fabulous - we both got the rotisserie chicken (encouraged by our waiter and the couple sitting next to us) - this is not your usual rotisserie chicken!!! The chef had a slight Asian twist on this dish, and the rice to accompany the chicken was unlike any rice dish I've ever had - a little crispy! Both of our appetizers - the beef tartare and the squid were impeccable and delicious. We will eat at Mattei's again when we are in the Los Olivos area.

Sitting next to this tricked-out retro wine trailer (see it to believe it!), and listening to a fabulous folk singer-songwriter guitar player, four of us had a beautiful outdoor Sunday brunch. Mattei's is a gem - feels like a farm, but with refined elegance and great affordability. The brunch dishes are totally fit for foodies - although the service was a tad slow. However, it gave us more time to enjoy the beautiful day and listen to the great guitar playing!

Cannot comment on the dinner service - we had a very nice lunch. We ate inside and it is quieter than outside - which is something we prefer. The food was very good - a mix of breakfast and a couple lunch items. Burger was good - messy but good. Fried could have been more sparing on the salt but had good texture and flavor.

We were eager to try Mattei's. Unfortunately we caught them on a bad night. Arrived and were seated for our 7:45pm reservation. While reviewing the menu we were told that they were out of 4 of the 6 entree selections, and 3 of the appetizers. Really? We were a bit confused and were told that there was a group and things has sold out. OK, but groups can be planned for. We talked the server into begging for a chicken entree so we both did not have to have steak. We tried to order wine and there was no wine by the glass list. Staff overall was friendly but a bit frantic. Wine glasses sat empty and had to flag 3 ppl to reorder. Food - some very good, some average. Rotisserie/grill chef was great to interact with. Hopefully better next time

We were very disappointed that the two wines by the glass we chose from the menu were no longer available. We were told that the wine list is changing and hasn't been updated yet ... maybe crossing them out might be a good idea. Then, I was told that the chardonnay they are now substituting for the one on the menu is $8 more per glass. Are you kidding me? I declined and did not order wine at all. Our bread arrived at the table as we were taking our last few bites of our entrees.

Mattei's is the best kept Brunch secret. Not overly crowded, live music, beautiful setting and most importantly the food was fantastic. We had the croque madame and the fried rice, both were delicious. Although the description of the fried rice was a bit subdued the kimchi, pork, rock shrimp and rice made for a unique combination.

Once again, another great dinner at Mattei's Tavern. The Tombo Tuna and the Morro Bay Oysters were great as ever. Sommelier Stephane Colling recommended a Riesling that was amazing and he served it in this really tricked out decanter in the shape of a grape vine. Anyway, great food. Great wine list. Great vibe.

Brunch movie set perfection: gorgeous outdoor location, acoustic guitar/singer, fantastic food and drink. The strawberry/Riesling cocktail was refreshing and not sweet made with my daughter's yummy Bloody Mary at an adorable pop up camper bar cart. She enjoyed egg whites scrambled w salmon and chives and I splurged on the sourdough waffle w whipped marscapone, bananas and dulce de leche and it was worth it. We shared potatoes and spectacular bacon (they are really good at bacon in Los Olivos). We lingered quite a while. Go!

This place is incredible. Definitely the best meal we had over the 5 days we were in Santa Barbara and adjacent wine country. The grilled avocado was to die for - we ending up ordering three! I think there is some drama with the new owners of this restaurant and the locals (locals are bitter because non-locals bought it and renovated and brought in a new chef) and I have seen bad reviews from some local because of it - but do not believe the negative reviews. Such an amazing meal with friendly, attentive staff and a wine list that is to die for. We had a spectacular evening and this will be our first stop next time we are in the area.

Fantastic dinner evening for my wife and I. First time there. Started at the bar with a before dinner cocktail. The bartender (Jason?) was a great host so we decided to stay at the bar for our meal. The ambience was casual and unpretentious but chic at the same time. We will return soon and will be looking forward to dining inside the restaurant at that time.

The new Mattei's Tavern is by far, the BEST Mattei's Tavern. No more mashed potatoes with every entree(adios Brothers!), but real thoughtful & flavorful dishes. We are weekenders in The Valley & so impressed that we now have a spot that is as good as any place in California, or the U.S. for that matter. What I've really noticed is how pristine the ingredients are. This place obviously has fun, it's like expertly produced, but they don't take themselves too serious. We do!

We dined at this restaurant based on a recommendation. To say we were extremely disappointed in the food and wine list is an understatement. The wine list was extensive if you prefer whites (there were only 4 cabs) and you wanted a wine from out of the area. We came to the SYV to enjoy the wines, yet there were very few on the list. This was the first time ever that we did not order wine when dining out! The food choices were odd. There weren't any appetizers that sounded appealing, and there was a limited selection of entrees. The salmon was tasty, but there wasn't anything else with it except for a bit of garnish. One piece of the chicken entree was very good, but the other pieces were under cooked.

Brunch food was expertly cooked, tasty and nicely presented. Their homemade bacon was freakin' delicious. The menu was a loco-vore riff on classic farm-house breakfast fare, tho the egg dishes need a side of some kind of potato thing. Service was charming and attentive. And very knowledgeable about the local wines. The open kitchen fits in well with the old-time stagecoach decor and rooms. The main dining room in the day, however, is an add on to the original building and looks like an addition to a roadside burger/rib joint. It is pleasant enough but doesn't connect at all to the rest of the building. Ikea chairs!!! The inner dining room is small and would not been out of place as the "fancy eatin' room" at Miss Kitty's of Gunsmoke fame.

We noticed an earlier review that mentioned "strange combinations, etc.." THIS RESTAURANT IS A HOME RUN. For some reason, we live in a time warp in this Valley and many people still think flavored mashed potatoes = quality cuisine. I wish to welcome Mattei's Tavern to 2014 & Mattei's you are alone in this Valley.....I thank you for it. Chef Wilson's food is on par with the best in any big city, I just hope these locals & tourists from Encino will open their minds/eyes a little and savor what is truly one of California's best restaurants. My recommendations are: bavette, rotisserie chicken, artichoke, & avocado. Simply the best to be found!

We were walked through the kitchen then back to seats that were bad lighting and in a corner, then the service was very slow and unprofessional. The menus was difficult to understand with the strange food combinations. The food was marginal and un appealing. We will not be return portions very small and over cooked. Great location but the Central Coast isn't New York were you can charge to much and under a preform.

We have had the pleasure of dining at Mattei's Tavern several times. Chef Wilson and his fabulous staff have created an incredible dining experience in the most beautiful setting. Their menu celebrates the locally grown bounty of the Central Coast that highlight Chef Wilson's creative and passionate culinary talent. Recently we enjoyed a lovely weekend brunch dining outdoors on Mattei's back patio and enjoying exquisite food listening to a great guitarist. Everyone in our party ordered something different from their varied brunch selections like cornmeal pancakes with smoked maple syrup and sausage, to yogurt with fresh berries, homemade granola and honey, and amazing hamburgers and pommes frites. We are still savoring our experience!

Mattie's restaurant has had a total face lift and is very chic and upscale now . The food in general has gotten a bit fussy and several complex items had to be explained (for just a squirt of a sauce) The guacamole appetizer was delicious...The restaurant has sadly gone the way of others that charge everything alacarte You have to order any sides to go with your meat/fish etc...but the reasoning is to have a "family style" experience. Tables on the porch are wonderful and the staff is friendly and efficient.

This was our first time to Mattei's Tavern since they have changed owners. The menu is very creative, and very well done!! It is no longer a "steakhouse." The only "down side" is that I asked for a quiet table away from the door and heavy foot traffic (like next to the kitchen, etc.). We sat on the enclosed patio which was lovely, but happened to sit next to a table of 8 or more - I couldn't tell exactly how many people, because the kids were constantly up and down, moving into the other rooms and back, etc. I don't object to kids in restaurants, but I do expect them to sit and eat and at least NOT disturb other diners. But we would definitely eat here again!

This was our first visit to Mattei's. They recently re-opened and it was one of the nicest experiences we have ever had. The Menu is select and portions are perfect. You may share the dining experience on all items if you prefer to do so. We asked for a quiet location and actually elected to sit ring side the chefs area. What a special treat to watch the chefs in action. You must have the grilled avocado with Ponzu sauce and the Arugula salad as an appetizer and the Pot De Creme for dessert. The grilled veggies as a main entree combined with the pot roast was marvelous to share. This will be our favorite dining experience for many years to come. Thank you staff all for a great dining experience and service that was excellent.
