Diner Reviews
  • "everything was wonderful. The menu had great selections, the food was great and the service was on point!"

  • "This used to be our once-a-year special-occasion place. Now it's more like semi-monthly! The owner and the staff are friendly, efficient and excellent. The food is seasonal, delicious and beautiful. We love Matisse."

  • "Matisse combines understated elegance, splendid food and attention the detail. The service is wonderful."

  • "...in every way! Fabulous food, lovely wait staff, and a pleasant, low-key atmosphere. Have been here 4 times in the last few months, and each time I was blown away by the consistent excellence of Matisse in creating a very pleasant dining experience. The bar staff knows how to make a good martini. The appetizers are so wonderful (beet salad, tuna tartare, pizza) that I often cannot resist making them my dinner. The fish is beautifully cooked, and the scallops are great. My husband was thrilled to find a hard to fine wine available at a very fair price. Yes! Tiny caveats: public parking is a pain and the calamari is a bit bready."

  • "server was assigned tables in both the front room and the back room, and seemed to always be in the other room when we needed something. Food was quite good, tho on the "trendy" side."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The food and service are consistently excelent. You can be guaranteed an enjoyable night out dinning here."

  • "I liked Matisse but it was not memorable. Food was good, buy not spectacular. The wine list is comprehensive and we had a wine recommended in the menu that was really, really good, too bad I can't remember the name. The ambiance was good but it was very quiet, too quiet for my taste. I have to admit it was a Friday at 9 pm so things might be different at different days/time. Service was good too but nothing special. Overall, a nice and quiet neighborhood restaurant but nothing special."

  • "Matisse seems to be one of the few restaurants around where the tables are not packed on top of each other and you can still have a decent conversation without shouting. That is worth alot! The place has an understated elegance and the service is attentive. I would rate the food as decent, not outstanding, but that might have been what I ordered, the duck breast, which was a bit on the fatty and tough side. For a peaceful dinner it can't be beat!"

  • "The tables are too close together, and the noise level was not conducive to conversation. On the other hand, the food, service and accommodation of the maitre'd were quite wonderful."

  • "Fritz has been the owner-chef of Matisse for many years and this restaruant is one of DC's best. He has consistently delivered wonderful, creative and healthy food. As a family operation, the eyes and ears of mangement are always on the look out and that is why it remains so fabulous,"

  • "Our uruguayan waiter was absolutely fantastic. So attentive and good. Will definitely go back to Matisse."

  • "We love Matisse. It's beautiful décor and friendly service make this one of our favorite restaurants in the DC metro area. Plus, we can usually get a reservation with only a few days. My husband is diabetic and he always finds many options."

  • "My wife and I visited Matisse for dinner recently. The food was quite good, the wine list was interesting and the service was quite attentive. However, we were left with a less than satisfied feeling because the owner was back and forth in the section of the restaurant where we were seated looking after what seemed to be several tables of regulars, but never even stopped to check how our meal had gone. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where the owner was so obviously present that the owner didn't speak with guests at every table. I guess he has enough regulars and doesn't think it's necessary to take time with newcomers. We may give them another chance, but haven't decided yet."

  • "We arrived early for dinner on a rainy Sunday night. It was quiet when we arrived, but people began to come in later. The service was friendly and patient and the food was absolutely delicious. We had oysters on the half shell, salmon, filet mignon, and calves liver lyonnaise. We enjoyed all of it - everything was cooked so nicely. We had the poached pear with Vanilla gelato for dessert. Fabulous. We will be back soon."

  • "And in 15 years, had never discovered Matisse. Picked it out of the Open Table listing because we felt like French and it was well-reviewed and nearby. I had grilled octopus and snapper. Husband had mahi spring rolls and pompano. The food was fresh, beautifully done, and constructed with creativity and care. We split an elegant apple tarte. The wine list showed a range of price and region - we chose a lovely featured Gigondas. Tables are far apart enough to have a conversation - thank you! Service was classic and attentive. Easy to park in the neighborhood. We will be back."

  • "We hadn't been to Matisse for a while due to the horrible weather, but it was great to return to such a wonderful restaurant. We were seated by the window and started with the beet salad and the fried oysters. Both were great. For our main courses, we ordered two of the specials - the ribeye steak and grilled swordfish. Both were superb- perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. Just delicious. We enjoyed a nice Pinot noir with dinner and enjoyed the poached pear and apple crumble for dessert. The service was excellent. We will return soon. Love this restaurant."

  • "Cozy neighborhood restaurant with very good food. We went on Valentines Day, so got surprised by hefty fixed price. Would have gone another night, had I known. I did ck website, ahead, no mention of special prices or dinners."

  • "This was one of the only favorably-rated restaurants available for last-minute booking on Valentine's Day. Glad I found it. The food was very good, although a bit too oniony for my wife's taste. The Valentine's Day menu was overpriced at $75-a-person for a prix fixe, four-course dinner (with, however, a good range of choices under three of the four courses). Overall, this was not one of the most memorable dining experiences ever, but the place was pleasant and the food well-prepared."

  • "Matisse has been a favorite for a long time(15 years)! Continues to turn out consistently great food, service and memorable experiences. Fritz, the owner is always present and on hand to enhance your dining experience. He's also great at helping to select new and interesting wines that are not available in wine stores. He pays attention! Love this little gem of a restaurant in every way. Try the organic roasted chicken. It's delicious."

  • "My dining companion and I had two appetizers, the ahi tuna tartar and the beet salad. The beet salad was very good; the tartar, excellent! For entrees, my companion had the House-made gnocchi, which he reported was very good (almost as good as a similar dish he had years ago that he's been trying to replicate ever since). I had the Pecan crusted Lemon Snapper . . . divine. (I am very picky about my food.) My only complaint is that, although the wine list itself was quite substantial, there were very few choices by the glass. Will definitely be returning."

  • "The food was very sound [and we can use small portions,] the service was especially pleasant, and -- from previous experience -- we received seating in the quieter front room. Good experience!"

  • "We love dining at Matisse. The service and the food are excellent. We ate there on Saturday and had Filet Mignon and calves liver. Both were cooked perfectly. The chef here does a fantastic job and I appreciate that he knows how to prepare organ meats so nicely. We had the poached pear and the apple crumble for dessert and gobbled them up. We love having such a good restaurant nearby, and I love that it is somewhat "under the radar". I'm afraid that if enough people knew how good Matisse is, we'd never be able to get a reservation! We will return soon."

  • "Service was great, parking outside was somewhat difficult. Fish with quinoa was outstanding. The apple crisp tart with icecream topped it off. Polished it all off with a Belgian brew sitting next to the window. What a great place for a date or Valentines day dinner."

  • "What a great place in AU Park! Outstanding food and we cannot wait to go back!"

  • "We enjoyed a romantic dinner at Matisse during the holidays and found the atmosphere lovely. Although pricey ($60 per person, including a shared dessert and one alcoholic beverage each), the food was beautifully composed - the sides and appetizers were especially well chosen, varied, and delicious. The wine menu is impressive, but the vast majority of options are only available by the bottle. A couple of negatives: The tables were a little close together - my partner's chair was touching the seat behind him. Also, the service was generally good, but our waiter seemed a little indifferent."

  • "I have frequently come here for evening business meetings which are always exceptional. This was the first time for a lunch I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It shouldn't have been concerned. It was everything I have come to expect. The attention to detail is wonderful. You will enjoy yourself everytime. Ask for a seat by the window to watch DC go by while you wait for your guests."

  • "The atmosphere is nice and the service attentive and not invasive. Every time I have eaten here I have tried something new and have never been disappointed. The Mussels are wonderful!"

  • "A friend and I had a leisurely Sunday afternoon brunch at Matisse. What a treat! The restaurant staff was attentive but not hovering or hurrying, both when we deliberated over the menu and when we lingered after the meal. We both enjoyed the brunch frittata. Brunch is the one meal at which Matisse is very vegetarian-friendly."

  • "I often come here with my guests but when we sit in back room, which I prefer for the seats, the noise is incredible! We have to lean across the table into each other's faces to hear what we're saying! I wish they would take a few days off and lose some clients and get the room sound proofed! I would go more often."

  • "my husband has difficulty climbing stairs. The restaurant has no elevator and even though we were the first party to be seated in the restaurant for dinner, they were unflexible with seating us downstairs."

  • "It's been several years since we've gone to Matisse for dinner. In fact, we stopped going a couple of years after it opened. We couldn't understand what all the hype was about. Now, what a pleasant surprise. Just a couple of weeks ago we went to one of the top rated restaurants in the region--28 on Zagat. It had nothing on Matisse. In fact, this was one of the best meals we've had at a DC restaurant in quite a while. First, this is one of the few restaurants that serves stone crabs--at least until Joe's gets here next month. What a treat. I'd go back just for these. For the main course we both had Dover Sole. It was perfectly prepared. The apple tart for dessert was just right. Even the bread reminded me of New York. Perfect."

  • "We have been going to Matisse for 10 years. We go for family brunches, ladies lunches and birthday dinners. We went recently on a very quiet Sunday, so the atmosphere wasn't as lively as usual. We had guests in town and we had a great time. Nothing constructive to say. It's one of my all time favorite restaurants. No trendy but consistently lovely."

  • "If I had just been reviewing my food I would have called the food outstanding. And while my husband enjoyed his dinner, he would lean towards very good. Having said that my shrimp with a chestnut risotto was outstanding. It was a special and this is the second time I have had a shrimp and risotto entrée. Both times outstanding and I am really picky about my shrimp. The kale salad was also outstanding. This is only the second time that I have had Kale and I really liked it. My husband loved his fois gras appetizer. I do not remember his entrée but we both had profiteroles for dessert and they were yummy. My husband said the wine list was pricey but we ordered a very good wine special for a good price."
