A word from Matilda
We bring to New York Tusc-Mex cuisine, a combination of Tuscan and Mexican home cooking. These two cuisines complement each other in an exciting new blend. Our menu offers a rich variety of choices, from standards such as pasta and quesadillas to the chefs’ fusion creations that introduce new herbs and condiments to each tradition.

At Matilda’s expect to find the friendly atmosphere of a Tuscan “trattoria” or a Mexican “restaurante familiar”, in a playful but stylish setting that is fully dedicated to the chefs’ daughter and the blending of two cultures.

A string of words in Italian, Spanish and Matilda’s parlance, envelops the dining space to celebrate what binds the creators of Matilda: the love for food, diversity and family.

Diner Reviews
  • "The service was horrible. And the food was mediocre at best. "

  • "Firstly it was cinco de mayo, I thought the mexican side of the restaurant would come out, however no drink specials. There was one waitress working the whole restaurant and boy was she testy. Would not let me use my scoutmob coupon even though there were no specials. The food the was fair; my friend got a paninni and there was a whole cube of garlic and an inch and a half red hot pepper, her mouth was on fire! So I thought the safest bet was was the churro- worst choice ever!! They tasted like Chinese noodles, there was hardly any cinnamon sugar and the chocolate it was paired with was too strong and over powering with mexican flare. Overall an Epic Fail of a cinco de mayo dinner. I hope their Italian food is better. "

  • "Everyone in our party loved their meals, which were generally Italian-Mex fusion, leaning a bit more to the Italian side. The huitlacoche ravioli were original and delicious. Attentive service and a great vibe."

  • "I like this place. My only complaint was the French toast for brunch was extremely small. It was delicious though."

  • "The restaurant and the show are both fantastic! Service was great and you never felt rushed. Liked the mix of mexican and italian food and liked the fact that they were very good at guiding about coeliac safe food. Will recommend to others, thank you."

  • "I have been here several times and the food and service are always excellent. The owner, Esteban, is warm and welcoming. Fresh food mixing the Italian and Mexican cultures (for example, rosemary steak tacos with arugula). On my most recent visit, I really enjoyed the passion fruit margarita, using fresh fruit puree."

  • "I had an amazing jalepeño margarita, some delicious bistec tacos and some polenta with creme fresca. All was delicious and our waitress was super nice and accommodating. I would go again just to sit at the bar (which is dimly lit with tiles all over the place)"

  • "Its a nice restaurant for a small group. Its very intimate so the atmosphere is what won me over here. What did not win me over was the food. I had the lasagne and it basically burnt the top of my mouth and was overall subpar. Not sure if I would even remember to recommend but the atmosphere was nice for dinner."

  • "unappealing on almost all levels. the place is a mess! food is blah -we had the guac, the lamb tacos, the spaghetti and the lasagna."

  • "Mexican and Italian fusion....wasn't sure what to expect but everything was amazing . I loved the pork tacos, the salmon, the goat cheese raviolis, the red wine, the chocolate dessert with Carmel icecream. The service was excellent and owner is very accommodating and friendly."

  • "This is a great little place with awesome happy hour deals and yummy drinks. The food is good but portions pretty small. I'll be back for the brunch."

  • "I went to Matilda with a group of five and we really liked the unique menu and fun drinks. The waiter was attentive and open to being creative with us on drink choices. Music playing in the backdrop was retro Euro-80s which we enjoyed (a little Echo and the Bunnymen anyone?). Prices are reasonable. I will go again!"

  • "This was recommended as a "hip" spot, which it wasn't, and it was really light on AC on a very hot day - but the Mexican Tuscan food was very good and well presented."

  • "Each meal had a way of incorporating italian and mexican food and it was all crazy delicious."

  • "Thought this was a great combination of mexican and Italian. Service was really nice and very accommodating. My only critique was that I thought the food was going to be really spicy (for the items flagged with 3 faces) but didn't find it spicy at all. Think when go back will ask them to really kick it up a notch. Will return as thought atmosphere and food was great."

  • "The food is great. They do a great job balancing Mexican and Italian flavors to create new and interesting dishes. The drinks were very good also and one of my friends copied down a drink recipe because he really wanted to be able to make the delicious drink again at home. The owners are very involved and very friendly. One of the owners was our waiter and the service was very good. The drinks are comparable to many other similar place, but the food prices are pretty low so it's definitely a good deal. I was here with a group of 7 people and they had no problems accommodating a somewhat large group. This was my third visit and I would definitely go back."

  • "The food was okay. The service was a bit inconsistent. There were two large parties dinning while we were and it was unbelievably loud. This was exacerbated by the loud music. It was almost impossible to hear my dinning companions. Overall, probably wouldn't go back unless someone else selected it."

  • "We went on a Sunday so it was very quiet which was great. We purchased a Gilt City Deal for a Pre-Valentines day dinner. We had a bottle of white wine which was good - im just a fan of wine in general :) For an appetizer we had the guacamole which was good with chips and awkward bread. For dinner I had the sirloin which was not amazing but the potatoes were good. The special of the day pasta was AMAZING - my date had it and it was fantastic. I love that some of the food has a kick to it. For desert, I had a warm chocolate cake with gelato. The cake was ok - not rich enough for my liking but the gelato was fantastic and the presentation was good. Service was great and friendly. Definitely a cool vibe in the place. Would definitely go again."

  • "The place and service was great but, the food wasn't very good. I had the short ribs and my siter had the pollo tecato and they weren't good but, her friend had the fajita and they were delicious. This lady, who i think was the owner/manager was really friendly and nice and honestly asked us about the food and she acknowledged our concerns!"

  • "Had my birthday dinner with a small group there. We had a great time! The waitstaff was really nice and attentive, the music was fun but not too loud, and the food was really interesting and delicious! It was worth it to go so far over to the east side because everything was so good. And the prices made it a good place to go and share a bunch of things. The margaritas were also very delicious!"

  • "I loved this restaurant!! The food was very good and the service was extraordinary. They also have really good happy hour deals. I wish it wasn't on Avenue C, but I will make the extra journey to go back because the food really was that good. I recommend the braised pork and peaches tacos for an appetizer, they are out of this world!"

  • "The braised short ribs and goat cheese ravioli were fantastic. Would definitely return!"

  • "While I would recommend Matilda for the food (great mix of tuscan/mexican food - especially the basil guacomole and goat cheese ravioli) I would not recommend them for their service. Once our inital order was taken it was nearly impossible to get our waiter's attention. It seems that this must be a restaurant for regulars because the waiter seemed to be friends with every other table. Maybe they already have all the clientele they need and are not interested in new customers. They certainly will not be making a regular out of me."

  • "The portions were a bit small for the price (which ranges from about $12 to $24), but the great quality made up for it. Next time I'd probably pick a bit more budget-friendly location. I felt like I should have gotten double the amount of food I did in a $16 entree. Definitely worth a visit though."

  • "It's a bit off the beaten path, but worth the trek out to Avenue C. Matilda offers a unique blend of Mexican and Italian flavors, which work surprisingly well together. I'd never have thought to put basil in my guacamole, or to top my goat cheese ravioli in mushroom sauce with pico de gallo. But it works!"

  • "Yummy food and decent service. I went about a year ago and the food was better then, but this time it was still good."

  • "Fransisco was attentive and a great source of info!1 Ask for him when u go. The tacos were delish, and the dessert -churros good- but a little dry. Hope to go back soon- romantic atmosphere- close and secluded ;)"

  • "I took my partner here for an intimate going away dinner. One, the place was just to ourselves, so that's always an added perk & also to know that you'll get individual service and quality food. After a couple hours searching a place that was open a little later, with a great ambiance and vegan/vegetarian options, I ran across Matilda. Even though not as convenient to get to as other places, this restaurant is well worth any travel! The menu was impressive, our server was out of this world & the food was delishious! Highly recommended as a place to share great food/drink with a loved one. I'll DEFINATELY be back!"

  • "The Italian/Mexican cuisine here is inspired and delicious! The menu is so varied and interesting, everyone will find something great, even in a large group. The management and wait staff are warm and welcoming, making everything extra special. Their love of food and hospitality really shines through, so one has an eating experience you can usually only find in a family trattoria in a small town; take a vacation on the LES!"

  • "I saw the restaurant on Gilt City and it looked interesting. I made reservations for brunch and had a very pleasant experience. The food was interesting combining both Mexican and Italian flavors but was not very high-end. I would like to see a broader menu, especially if I was to go for dinner. I recommend for brunch or lunch. The spaghetti carbonara with chorizo is amazing. I could eat it regularly."

  • "Bougth one of those deals for this restaurant which got me one appetizer, two entrees, 1 dessert and a bottle of wine for $57. We started with the guacamole and chips which was standard and a blue cheese salad with pancetta. I should have known that the blue cheese would have been too overpowering for me so shame on me for ordering that. My girlfriend had the salmon which she liked and I had the braised short-ribs which, while tender and smothered in sauce lacked flavor. We declined dessert as we were both full. All in all, we had a good experience though I'm not sure I would trek all the way to Avenue C again for, what I think of as, average fare."

  • "All I have to say is,"don't bother." If a Mexican restaurant can't even get the margarita and guacamole right, we're all in trouble."
    Dined on 8/9/2012
  • "I love Matilda. Their eclectic mix of Italian and Mexican food is one of a kind. From pastas with pico de gallo to quesadillas with prosciutto and basil, you can't find this food anywhere else. The quality is always good: fresh ingredients, freshly prepared, well balanced flavors. Family owned and operated, this place is a neighborhood establishment with a well managed outdoor seating area for great summer nights and brunches. And the brunch is amazing!"

  • "They have 2 brunch specials - $12.50 for entree + 1 drink + 1 coffee or $25 for entree + unlimited mimosas. Definitely recommend "Uova in camicia" and "Uova tutti gusti" - both absolutely delicious!"
