Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first visit and Mateo's Cocina Latina did not disappoint!! My original thought was to just order an entree but after reviewing the specials & regular menu, we decided to order a bunch of smaller plates to get a wider variety of "yumminess". And we hit the jackpot of flavors... from my Margarita de casa to multiple types of tacones, ceviche, tacos & roasted beets Yucatan style!! Sorry, no room for dessert... this time:) I look forward to dining here on a regular basis."

  • "Mateo's is a good place that keeps on getting better--perfect for a sunny day (under lots of umbrellas) and festive fruit drinks, margaritas, and Yucatan-spiced tacos. Not your everyday Mexican fare, but instead a very ambitious attempt to recreate a terrific cuisine."

  • "Mateos is that rare restaurant where adults love the food (and the super hot hot sauce) and kids love the food too. It is also a place where we go on romantic dates, and has one of the best patios in Healdsburg. Do yourself a favor and enjoy organic local produce prepared as real Mexican cuisine. Take the kids, they will feel welcome too, of just enjoy the beautiful patio with friends. Finally- a Tacon and a drink is the best way to start a long night."

  • "From the guacamole (ice cream cones) to the flavorful ceviche every course has a little built in surprise. Flavorful combinations reminicent of the Yucatan. Sit outside, choose among the margaritas, relax and enjoy."

  • "Great Latin food. Great service and a very nice experience."

  • "Main course was very, very good, service was slow. Had a Meyer Lemon and a Blood Orange Margarita, they were tasteless, two of the worst drinks for the money I've ever been served. Server never asked us if we wanted dessert and she seemed more interested in helping larger parties than the two of us. Could have been just a one time situation but with all the interesting choices in Healdsburg, CA we will not be inclined to return to Mateo's to give it another try…based on this experience. I could not recommend this restaurant to others."

  • "Met all expectations for anticipated birthday brunch celebration. Mario and Sean ( Server and Bartender) were extremely gracious, knowledgable and sought to make us feel welcome from the beginning. Mateo himself was very visible and kindly presented my friend with a special birthday dessert while leading the staff in song. We will be back, especially in the summertime on Wednsdays for their outdoor event complete with roasted pig and music !!"

  • "We really like the rock cod tacos and pork plate but the bisque with popcorn dust was bland, bland, bland. We ate it anyway because we were really hungry. But it not something I would order again. The entrees made up for it luckily. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the sticky bun flan dessert to go like we wanted so we had to skip dessert."

  • "The fish stripr bass special was excellent, but pricey. The rock cod tacos were also very good, but more appropriate for lunch rather than dinner, good to have the option, though. The table, small round for two, was too small to feel comfortable, and the chairs were very upright and uneven on the floor surface. Service was very good."

  • "First the ceviche we ordered looked lilke Lutefisk. Not a single person out of our large party enjoyed their meal. From mussels to basic carne asada tacos, everything looked and tasted like it had sat on the warming plate for 15 minutes. We were astonished when we got the bill and it came out to over $50 per person. Guacamole was twice as much on the bill as had been listed on the menu. Our server explained that we had ordered a different size, NOT listed in appetizers, rather cleverly well hidden on a different part of them menu in entrees. None of this was explained to us when we ordered. Very poor experience and will not be returning."

  • "The food at Mateo's is outstanding...the influence of french and latin cuisine makes for a very special treat. The Tacones to start were awesome...the Olive oil guacamole tacones were particularly good. Be sure to add the special sauces to add a bit more spice to the meal (caution: they're hot but really good). The handmade tacos are unbelievable. We visit Healdsburg often, but this was our first visit to Mateo's...we'll be back for sure. Can't wait!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the Tacones (cone shaped tacos with various fillings), the tamales and the lamb chops. Dessert was served cool, when it should have been warm, but overall we had a wonderful meal and will certainly return."

  • "The New Year's Eve prix fixe dinner was delicious but overpriced. Our rare lamb was perfectly cooked (just as we ordered it), though we had to insist to an anxious server several times that we actually DO prefer rare meat. Preparations were imaginative but short of brilliant. The tasty "caliente" Margarita was properly cold and picante, not caliente. Service was friendly and responsive, but pacing was more appropriate for a business lunch than a romantic holiday evening."

  • "Not your typical Mexican restaurant but some really good, though expensive, items -especially good butternut squash-crab soup. Was nice to find such an interesting place open Christmas evening"

  • "A rather unique menu with usual selections but prepared in unique style. Food was excellent and presented in a very nice style. The guacamole was fresh and prepared with olive oil. Though I prefer corn tortilla strips with the guacamole, the flour strips were fresh and excellent. The carnitas tacos were presented with soft corn tortillas and were reasonably spicy. The Habanero sauces were excellent and quite spicy."

  • "The food was interesting and the service was excellent. We were there on a very quiet night so can't attest to how the ambience would be when the restaurant was bustling. I think it would have been very hard to have a conversation if they were busy. The tables were close together and with wood tables and chairs there wasn't any kind of sound absorption but that is me."

  • "It's local, it's authentic, it's delicious. A real find in Healdsburg. Lovely patio which is very inviting. Drinks are excellent. But the food is really outstanding. Ceviche was delicious and the tacos were memorable. Beautifully cooked pork and crusted rock cod and lamb tacos were all outstanding. I heartily recommend it."

  • "A wonderful dining experience on Thanksgiving Day with new tastes!"

  • "We were looking for a place that had recognizable dishes with flare. Some of the choices in Healdsburg were otherwise too exotic for my friend, and I don't eat nettles. No basket of tortilla chips; the long crispy pumpkin seed crackers were divine, you need to ask for them (there's a small charge). My friend loved her lamb tacos and I had the best pork, slow-roasted suckling pig served with Middleton Farm cinnamon-cured red onions. Both dishes were well presented with perfectly cooked vegetables and home made tortillas. We did not have room for dessert. The glitch in the service was that the waitress brought the wrong dish. However, I did not wait long for the right one."

  • "We had never had food from the Yucatan region, so it was great to try something new and different than you get at a lot of places in Wine Country. The food and drinks were delicious and the service was great. We would definitely go back."

  • "Mateo's stated all over their menu that they used only fresh, organic, farm-to-table produce and ingredients. Then why was everything cooked to death, literally unrecognizable? Why were the only salsa/sauces offered processed cooked ones? Why was the fish smelly and slimy? On a side note, why was there no alcohol in the expensive drinks? I just don't understand how they stay open - the food was awful. And we spent $150 for 3 drinks, 4 entrees (one was vegetarian) and one appetizer. Unbelievable."

  • "The most over-priced overrated food experience I have ever had! 4$ each for corn tortilla cones filled with flavorless watered down guacamole??? We ordered suckling pig for 21$ which came with two 4" corn tortillas... Not enough to even begin eating the pork. When we asked for more, we were informed they were 1$ each... Indignant, rude owner! We left 2 13$ margaritas on the table and made our way to Willis down the street... Don't waste your time or money!!!"

  • "Great food!! Not your typical Mexican restaurant. Excellent Yucatecan food - every bit as good as I've had in the Yucatan. If you want just plain old boring Mexican, this is not the place. But if you want a true Mexican food experience, this is it! They have a fantastic selection of tequilas and an extremely knowledgeable staff. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Healdsburg. Highly recommended."

  • "We went for a second try but won't be coming back. It took over 25 minutues to get our drinks and just as long to get our food. It was 2 hours for 2 drinks and our lunch. The food is good but there are other just as good or better. Need more help at the bar and in the kitchen."

  • "Excellent cocktails, refreshing and addictive. Very pleasant sitting out in the patio. Very good ceviche and guacamole as starter courses. Delightful fresh chips with a variety of crunchy seeds. However, the main courses were overcooked & dry."

  • "Very different, high quality ingredients, unusual and delicious food. Not a usual Mexican restaurant cuisine. We spent $100 for two including the tip."

  • "Of the 6 guests only one liked their dinner. I will say when my dinner was served and I noticed my plate had cucumbers on it and I can't eat cucumbers, the waiter quickly took it away and brought it back with a nice veggie. 5 of us thought The margaritas were great but the DD wanted diet coke, but they don't have diet coke only a Mexican cola and it's not diet... We were celebrating two birthdays, which i had noted in the reservation. After dinner We ordered one dessert to share so we would all have a little bite. When the waiter lit the candles and had one birthday personae blow out the candles then re lit the candles and brought the same dessert over to the second birthday person and had her blow them out again!?! That was dry odd.."

  • "One 3" empanada does NOT warrant $10! I'm all for farm to table, understand that squash blossoms are fragile and that squash blossoms not easy to come by HOWEVER it certainly doesn't warrant a $10 price on the menu. I've eaten at upscale Mexican restaurants and have no problem paying for quality, but this is ridiculous. Okay if you gave me two, hmmm but it's at least a little more reasonable. Ridiculous, oh yeah I already said that. That really set the mood for a mediocre cochinita and lamb sandwiches that were barely seasoned. When I told the server she didn't bat an eye and defended it (as she should but still consider the customer) however that was a Napa (sorry but true) attitude and not Healdsburg nor Sonoma. Cuidado!"

  • "Food was beautifully presented - a more upscale, modern version of Mexican classics. Some of the best corn tortillas we'd ever had. Service was very good, but the restaurant was not full and so you would expect that."

  • "Had my son's Welcome Dinner the day before his wedding for 100 people at Mateo's. What a wonderful time everyone had. The food was superior and the service was outstanding. The appetizers were served in a very unique way and presented beautifully. The drinks were delicious and they were pouring real liquor. Can't thank David enough for putting together such a memorable night for all of us. Mateo's creations were absolutely wonderful. I would highly recommend Mateo's."

  • "Our first visit in Mateo's was delightful. Very good, authentic, *Mexican* (not Mexican-American, or Cal-Mex, or Tex-Mex) food. Yucatecan food, in fact. I truly hope foodies try this place, and this food. Yucatecan food is one of the most interesting regionales cuisines in Mexico (along with comida Poblana and Oaxaquena). It shines here, among other things due to the high quality of the ingredients. We ordered extensively from the menu: tacones (pan de cazon, and frijoles con chorizo); ceviche (delightful); panucho, topped with pibil or annato chicken (the best dish, I think); fish taco; lamb taco. The one weak spot: a truly terrible flan, that should have never left the kitchen."

  • "Looked forward to dinner but found my selection of octopusto be too salty and tough. And prawns were too soft when should have been firm."

  • "This restaurant is NOT Tex-Mex, nor is it colonial Mexican. It is primarily Yucatan Mexican food, with a creative flair and superb presentation. Lots of seafood dishes on the menu. We enjoyed all the dishes our group of four ordered. We started with ceviche and oysters. Two of us had the mussels, octopus, and shrimp special (the spicy red sauce was amazing). The service was outstanding. The drink menu is exceptional. We ate outdoors and the evening weather was perfect. This place is a must-try restaurant in Healdsburg (a town loaded with good eateries)."

  • "The agua fresca, huevos rancheros and blue corn pancakes with ice cream were unbelievably delicious. We also had a wonderful fig, mint and tomato salad. Fresh, well balanced flavors. Great brunch on the patio. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Unfortunately our experience was similar to other reviewers. We had high hopes, but it just didn't work out. The food was actually pretty good, but somewhat overpriced. A very small empanada appetizer was tasty, but $10 with about 3 bites in it. But the real problem is the service. Slow to start. Then we ordered 3 appetizers and our entrees. We got 2 appetizers in a reasonable time, then we were left hanging for maybe 30 minutes, until I flagged down the hostess to get someone's attention. It's one thing not to get your food, but at least have someone stop by every once in a while and mention that they haven't forgotten about you. And a decent margarita, but maybe the least drink and most ice I've ever gotten in a margarita."
