A word from Matchbox Palm Springs
Voted “Best Pizza in the Desert” 4 years running,
What makes a great pizza? It starts with a great oven! Ours is an authentic wood- fired masonry oven where the fire has burned constantly since the day we opened. Modern gas and electric ovens cannot produce the intense heat needed - over 700 degrees - to achieve the crispy, smoky crust that our oven provides. With dough made fresh daily in-house, our goal is to make the best pizza in the desert!
In the mood for something a little fancier? Our famous mini-burgers, Pan seared atlantic salmon, 16 oz grilled Rib Eye steak or matchbox fish and chips? Our chef's dishes are simply and classically prepared! You’ll find our appetizers and entrees well seasoned & hearty, never bland. The challenge? Build an interesting restaurant in an expansive second floor space that includes outdoor seating in historic Downtown Palm Springs! The matchbox experience takes place in an engaging atmosphere designed & custom-built.

Diner Reviews
  • "We love the food at this restaurant. Our last visit was our second experience and this time our table was outside on a small balcony. Sitting outside on a warm night made the food that much better!"

  • "My daughter 6 years old went during one of the busiest seasons and had no problems and loved the experience. The food was great and my daughter said it was the best pizza in the world."

  • "Great place to people watch from the balcony. Definitely request a private balcony table. Pizza is excellent!"

  • "I haven't been to Matchbox for about three years....don't know why. I had almost forgot how much I do enjoy it. I went for lunch with a friend just this week and had a wonderful time. The food was absolutely scrumptious, waitress top notch and it was unusually quiet which was a nice treat. I enjoyed myself so much that my husband and another couple are coming back Sunday night for dinner. We had the crab soup with the delicious bread accompanying it along with the spinach salad that had fresh orange slices, candied walnuts and red onion. I ordered my favorite pizza which was the fig and prosciutto."

  • "Went for happy hour mid-week. Most of the good was very good - I recommend the sliders. For $5 you get two sliders and a small pile of onion straws. We also really liked the calamari with a jalapeño jelly dipping sauce. We also ordered a tempura fried spicy Tina roll that was not good at all - skip it. Our server was fantastic! William had great knowledge of the menu, including the wine list and beer list which contained primarily micro-brews. He was really engaging and made our overall experience really fun."

  • "Surprisingly good pizza. May be the thinnest crust I've even had, and yes, that's a good thing."

  • "Great Pizza! and good drinks. The place was happening and it seemed like quite the party zone. It was a Saturday night and there were a couple of big party groups (Bachelor Party and Bachelorette Party) so it got a bit roundy especiall considering we had two kids with us. We would certainly return"

  • "We had a very enjoyable experience at Matchbox. The service and food were very good. It was a beautiful evening so we were able to enjoy the view and weather from our table. I would definitely return and try other items from the menu."

  • "We had requested and received a private balcony seating, which was fantastic overlooking Palm Canyon Drive. We arrived at 5pm and restaurant was not busy at all; however, server was slow and we never received our calamari appetizer. Food was disappointing... steaks had lots of fat and vegetables were cold. We would not return for the food..."

  • "Last week everything was great there. Not so this time.Asked for railing table, not available, five minutes after we are seated, perfect table opens up.We would have waited. Busser brought water immediately. Server took 15 minutes to come to table. Ordered. Got salads, go entree, (neither by server), still no sodas. Took 30 minutes for sodas. The medium hamburger thawas dry and well done. 20 minutes with an empty glass, I got up and asked the busser for a drink refill. I asked server to not take silverware with salad but she said she'd bring new. She forgot. Took from other table. No manager walking around asking how things were. It was very slow when we were there. Server needs training. Terrible service.Highlight, pizza was great."

  • "The food was excellent as always. Service was a bit slow this time."

  • "The thin-crust pizzas are wonderful. The iceberg wedge and sliced steak was not so good - both my husband and I had intestinal issues about 6-8 hours after eating it. Drinks are good. Finally a place in PS that has delicious and flavorful black stout. Very crowded on patio - inside is dark - wish they would tear down some of those walls and make more of it into patio space."

  • "The food here is SO good (the tempura ahi role? Seriously, to die for), the staff is always energetic and friendly and the prices are totally reasonable. (Happy hour prices are downright cheap!) Even our REALLY picky kids love it (and our 11YO dubbed the sliders "the best she's ever had"). And get this: A server (not ours) dropped a booster seat sort of near our table at one point during dinner. It was NO BIG DEAL--she made a joke and we laughed. When our bill came our waiter had taken one of the entrees off for the "booster seat incident". We actually tried to fight him on it, but he insisted! This was our first time using OpenTable, too and it couldn't have been easier or more seamless. All around great experience."

  • "Had no idea how wonderful Matchbox Palm Springs was. We chose to go there because it looked nice overlooking the street. I cannot even describe how delicious the best pizza was. It is definitely the best pizza I have ever had, and that is impressive because I am from Chicago and am familiar with good pizza. The salad that my server recommended was outstanding. Ridiculously cheap prices at happy hour. But food is well worth full price. The service was outstanding! Looking forward to going back."

  • "We were very pleased with our dining experience on their 2nd floor patio overlooking the happenings on the street and in the courtyard. Great service, tasty food, and a very reasonable and focused wine and beer list (we went with a bottle of wine). Will return again."

  • "A lovely evening - came early as were going to the theatre. Great happy hour cheese and meat platter. The pork chop dinner is delicious."

  • "Matchbox offers great food with a fun atmosphere downtown Palm Springs. I suggest making reservations as it can get busy. We had a reservation, but we still got seated about 15 minutes late. The food was delicious and you can't go wrong with the pizzas. The service was a bit slow, but it was due to how busy the restaurant got over the dinner hour. I would return when back in the Palm Springs area."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the Matchbox. WE had fun watching the crowds go by down below on street level and the wait person was so accomodating. And the pizza is the best ever! My spring break high school girls had a great time."

  • "Well it was a last farewell to our family members heading north after their vacation. A great place to meet on the outdoor balcony, with great food(everyone enjoyed their meal), the beer and wine was very good. Good recommendations from our server, William who was very helpful. We have been dined here several times and look toward to our next visit."

  • "Good restaurant in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. Busy and hopping with people. The bar looked fun for people watching. We had a party of 6 so sat off in a separate space. Food was fine, service was fine. Nothing to rave about t nothing to complain either. I would go back and recommend."

  • "This is not the first time we have been to Matchbox , and it probably won't be our last. We were very disappointed in the service and the quality of food this time which was unusual as previous trips were fine. It might have been a bad night for them. As we were celebrating my spouse birthday, it was not the best choice for that."

  • "We live in Rancho Mirage and took out of town guests to Palm Springs on a Thursday evening to visit the street fair. I wanted someplace near by and found Matchbox on Open Table. It was a find!! It's location is right in the center of things and it's fun. But be sure to have a reservation - especially on a Thursday. I'd certainly visit again."

  • "Sat out on a balcony seat and just relaxed and dined... and people watched! Great evening! Enjoyed every appetizer we tried! But have to say the Ahi Tuna Tempura roll is an absolute must!! Outstanding!"

  • "For a romantic spot, try the balcony overlooking Palm Springs' center. Great bruschetta during happy hour and giant onion rings with a terrific steak sandwich."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "Service was poor - we had to ask 4 times before they lit the outdoor heaters. Bread came after our main course was served. We waited 20 minutes before we saw a waiter. They complained they were short of staff, but it was a Sunday night in season???"
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "Great pizza! Lots of kids. Because I checked the "first time eating here" box we were given a bad table. When I asked for a better table we were told they are reserved for more frequent diners and since this was are first time we could not change tables. Stupid management."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Great selection of food, sandwiches and pizzas. The sliders were enjoyed by all. Specialty cocktails are great; however, service was lackluster. Would return as we enjoyed the food and hope the service will be more attentive."

  • "I have been twice, first time great service pleasant server and staff. Last visit, server was flustered, short tempered and forgetful. The place was very busy but not an excuse! Still we enjoyed our food, was excellent! We just kind of laughed to see what he would do next...."

  • "We were running late for the show at the Palm Springs Follies across the street and needed quick service. Our waitress was amazing...she got food to us in very quick time and was super attentive to our needs. We shared beef sliders, charcuterie platter and pizza. Everything was excellent . We will definitely go back when we have more time to enjoy the atmosphere, good and great service."

  • "Booked this place for a happy hour with some co-workers. We arrived early (4pm), there was 1 other couple there with drinks- NOT busy. We also showed up amongst another couple. Both my party and the other couple decided to seat ourselves. At least 5 minutes later, a bus boy came by with water. A waitress came to bring food to the couple that was already there, passed both my party and the other couple, again, didn't say a word. I should also mention 2 bartenders and 2 staff were leisurely chatting by the bar, still, no service. Finally, the other couple yelled to get service, which was met with attitude. Despite the fact the couple was sitting right next to us, waiter again passed without taking out order. We walked. Never again, stay away."

  • "We enjoyed Matchbox because the menu is varied enough for hearty and light appetites, vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The crab soup is delicious as was the beet salad and the 4 cheese pizza. Good beer and wine selections, too. Our waiter was terrific; attentive, cheerful, welcoming."
