Diner Reviews
  • "I'm no sushi-o-phile, though my daughter can be... She and I had a wonderful time at Masu Sushi. This is the best sushi I've had in town, hands down- and I've been to a dozen or more. We arrived a few minutes late, no fuss, seated right away. Our waitress allowed us to settle in, offered drinks (sake)- they do have other drinks to offer. Started with a couple appetizers as we were hungry- calamari and eggplant were outstanding, strongly recommend either or both. Dinner was some tempura, nigiri (several fish), Japanista roll and Death By Sushi roll, their presentation on the plate was simple for the nigiri (perfect) and beautiful for the rolls. We were rewarded with mouthfuls of sushi deliciousness. This place rocks! We'll be back."

  • "We love Japanese cuisine - and selected this restaurant while traveling in Portland. Our waitress was nice, attentive, and welcoming. The food, unfortunately, while creative, was not great. Miso soup was not traditional and had some type of sweetener added (some may enjoy this, not us). Sashimi was very good, but for some reason they poured soy on top of each piece. The rolls we ordered were huge, generous, portions - which is nice, but actually resulted in the rolls being difficult to eat and the rice overwhelming the flavor. We read reviews before selecting the restaurant and found only one criticism - cucumber in the water, which we found to be a peculiar criticism. Now we get it -- the cucumber results in an unpleasant fishy taste."

  • "because all of the menu items are so delicious. Sea vegetables? Check. Kale salad? Check. Japanese eggplant in a miso glaze? Check check check. The smoked black cod is out of this world--tender, sweet and succulent. This place is such a find--I've yet to be disappointed."

  • "The food was the best I've ever had the Sashimi were the largest pieces and juiciest most tender ever"

  • "We are sushi regulars and while this is not a traditional Japanese restaurant, they do their thing very well. Every dish we had was creative and tasty. A bit disappointed that the wine list only carried one Oregon wine though."

  • "We've enjoyed Masu Sushi many times. The fish is very fresh and the cooked items are always creative and delicious. The cod was especially outstanding. The bar menu includes creative cocktails and the service is always terrific. If they would just leave the cucumber out of the water - they would be practically perfect."

  • "Loved everything there...sushi, miso, salads. The portions were not huge, but I would rather go for quality over quantity anyways."

  • "Went here with three girlfriends. You know, girls night out. Our server was visibly annoyed with us though, because we were having such a great time talking to one another we weren't super fast with ordering. This place is pricey but very yummy - the three omnivores shared four rolls of sushi. Our vegetarian enjoyed her green machine roll. Drinks were decent (they were mocktails), Miso soup and edamame were both good. And, frankly, we ended up here instead of the trendier Bamboo Sushi because we could get a reservation - Bamboo only does groups larger than 7. A definite recommend if you like sushi."

  • "Eating at Masu is one of the most pleasant dining experiences in Portland. The hot, cold and sushi menus are all delightful. The kale, brussels sprout salad is unique and so flavorful that it is a standout. Masu manages to be vibrant without being loud, allowing you to enjoy conversation with those at your table while you enjoy a delightfull meal."

  • "I love Masu. It's the only sushi I'll eat in town. Not only because it's the best but because the service is impeccable. This was my husband and my first night out after having our first baby. I had high expectations for a nice evening, I even wore the red dress I got married in. Part way through dinner I spilled a little soy sauce on my dress, the server saw and came over with soda water. I was so pleasantly shocked. By far the best meal I think I've ever had, our server made recommendations that were right on. It had been a year since I's been able to eat sushi and it was well worth the wait. Thank you Masu."

  • "I've been to Masu a few times. The decor is awesome! Food is also good! The eggplant off the kitchen menu is worth the trip! So delicious!!"

  • "Went for a late night weekend dinner and the atmosphere was very cozy and romantic. Although the restaurant was not very busy, we were seated immediately beside another couple. Service was extremely disappointing, waited very long to have a drink order taken and even longer to order food, and waitress was nowhere in site. Food arrived quickly and was decent, but again our waitress never came back to check on us. Left a bit hungry as we probably would've ordered more if someone came to check on us."

  • "We had a lovely anniversary dinner at Masu. The server was attentive without being intrusive, suggesting a wonderful sake to compliment our selections. The chef's choice plate was fantastic and the miso soup (eaten without a spoon) was delicious. This was our second visit to Masu and the second was just as great as the first!"

  • "The food was top notch. Our service wasn't the best but I think that's because it was valentines day and super busy."

  • "We like to go to many sushi restaurants and this one is the best! My wife loves the edamame right when you sit down. Great presentation and great food! We got there early for our reservation and they sat us right down. The wait for the food was very quick!"

  • "As Japanese cuisine should be. The cold dishes offer exploration, experimentation, and delightful surprises. Seaweed medley, simmered & pickled. Caesar of chards. A warm dish of eggplant, soft, tender, melt on the palate, flavorful. Flesh seafood, sushi & sashimi. Opt for the special. Not your regular fare. Live scallop, giant clam, and horse mackerel. As fresh as open sea. The texture inviting & the delicate taste lasting. The ginger beer is fine option for a 0%-alcohol beverage. The spice itself gives an easy euphoric tickle. Pace the courses. Select a complimentary pair and a contrasting third for the table to sample. Cycle through the cold, warm, raw, savory. PS: Coffee and chocolate afterward at Cacao downstairs top the evening."

  • "This is our 2nd time to Masu, and it continues to impress. Happy hour prices give everyone an opportunity to try their extremely fresh and generous serving size sushi. Their "caesar" salad is phenomenal; the chef has deconstructed the traditional salad by replacing it was chard, feta, smoked mackarel (to replace traditional anchovies), and topped with crunchy strands of burdock (a root vegetable). Try to get a bite with all of the ingredients - your mouth will thank you! The service was the perfect amount of attention; not too much, not too little. The sushi chefs are knowledgeable, efficient, and work together like a well oiled machine behind the counter. And since my husband won't read this, I'll dare to say they're handsome as well!"

  • "The food here is very good, and consistently good. The calamari is especially good. Service is very good ( knowledgeable of the product, attentive but not overly so they see a reason to come to your table and they are there). The restaurant is also very comfortable."

  • "This a great sushi restaurant in Portland. The menu was imaginative and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the sake selections. Would definitely recommend."

  • "The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere. Romantically lit with lush art and decor. We ordered tea and miso (both very standard) and looked over the menu. The sushi selection was excellent and the ingredients were very fresh. My companion's maki (the Pearl roll) was inventive and tasty, and my chirashi was packed with variety and healthy portions of sashimi. A tad spendy, but the experience was very good overall, and excellent compared to the other sushi choices in town."

  • "This was our third date night to Masu. Another flawless experience! We sat at the bar top, the bartender was knowledgable and attentive. He even recognized us and remembered our favorite dishes! The hostess was friendly and sat us quickly, even through it was New Years Eve and we were early for our reservation. Sushi was phenomenal as usual!"

  • "They have sushi that is hard to find (e.g. giant clam); some of the best sushi I've had!"

  • "Masu Sushi has some of the best sushi in the pacific north west. I am an avid fan of sushi, especially good sushi and Masu is one of the best I've had so far. That along with a great staff and a nice atmosphere makes Masu one of my favorite places to go when I am visiting Portland. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes sushi. I would also recommend going before dinner rush or at slower business hours, as with any restaurant, the food and services is going to be much better when they aren't really busy. I found a 5:30 dinner is just perfect, slipping in just before the crowds show up."

  • "We've dined at Masu (as recommended by our daughter who is a foodie) many times and brought friends as well and never been disappointed. The sushi is delicious, fresh and presented creatively. I had the best cocktail yet as well! My request for a private corner was acknowledge gracefully by the owner. Thank you so much. We shall return."

  • "I had heard a lot about Masu but I felt like we spent a lot of money for food that was good but not amazing. We dropped $300 before gratuity (party of 3) and although I regularly spend this much dining out I would have liked more of a wow factor. Seafood was fresh and rolls were delicious. The calamari appetizer was memorable and seasoned perfectly. We received our drinks after our first round of food had arrived which was a little annoying when you're paying that much money. That being said, the server was personable and very attentive. The drinks taking a while was obviously due to the bar being backed up but when spending that much $ drinks shouldn't take 20 minutes."

  • "Great sushi, good drinks, nice location with really cool ambience, attentive servers. My only complaint is that the prices are a bit higher than I'd like, but at least everything is really tasty and unique."

  • "Be prepared to climb 2 flights of stairs to reach the restaurant. If there was an elevator we didn't see it and the hostess did not point one out. Great place to grab a little sushi on your way to a destination. Unfortunately we had dinner in mind, so we kept ordering small plates. We left satisfied. The dishes where unique and tasty."

  • "The flash fried eggplant appetizer was great. Sort of melt in your mouth good. The Sushi was excellent with their fish incredibly fresh and tasty. Our only concern was the second floor walk up, but they have access to an elevator for the physically unable."
