  • "My family and I went to this steakhouse on a weeknight and it was packed full. The noise level was very high. I couldn't have a conversation with my daughter sitting across the table. The wait staff could not have been more polite or accommodating to my children (ages 10 and 13). The food was very high quality and generous portions on the sides. Amazing steak!"

  • "We got the Australian Wagyu steak for two, which was delicious. The mushrooms and roasted Brussel sprouts were also good, although, really, with all that butter, it would be hard for them not to taste good. The negatives were service and lighting: the place is super dark -- I couldn't really see to cut my meat. The waiter was very helpful when it came time to pick a wine, but we were left unattended for long spells, so dinner for two took four hours."

  • "Mastro's is currently my favorite River North restaurant! The shrimp cocktail presentation is amazing: you have to order it to see for yourself, and I've never had any that has tasted fresher. I've only had the filet, & lobster tails, and they are always cooked perfectly. Oooooh the BUTTER CAKE!!!! You MUST try this. Seriously. Be warned that if you are seated in or near the bar area, the music can be quite loud but the performers were also very good the one time I was in that section. :) The restaurant is also quite dim, so it's a good thing I had a flashlight app to read the menu. Very expensive, but to be expected for this quality of food and level of service. Definitely make reservations, as this is a very popular restaurant!"

  • "First of all, forget about havin any sort of meaningful conversation here- way too loud. The food here is above average for a steakhouse, but doesn't belong in the pantheon of great Chicago steakhouses. The service is pretentious and it was hard to hear anything that the waiter said- could be important- especially when the waiter mentions the steak specials cost well over $100 each. It was so dark inside that it was impossible to read the menu without a flashlight. Despite this, they think they can justify prices such as $8 for a shrimp. The wine list is very boring, seemed like some distributor gave them a discount for picking a block of wines that was on sale. In a city with so many other steak places, I can't suggest this place."

  • "My husband took me to Chicago for my birthday and we had dinner here! The service was amazing from the moment we stepped into the restaurant! The ambience was perfect as well as kid-friendly, which worked great for our 10 year old daughter. The food was OUTSTANDING and the service was IMPECCABLE! And to top the night off I received a surprise birthday dessert, Mastro's Signature Warm Butter Cake (was so amazing) which included a Happy Birthday inscription along with my name written in chocolate! AWESOME! BEST BIRTHDAY DINNER EVER! Five Stars from me and I am a HUGE customer service and food critic! My family and I will definitely dine here when we return to Chicago!"

  • "This was the best filet mignon I've had in a long time! Perfectly seasoned and very tender. My husband and son had rib eye steaks which were also unbelievable. All the sides are ala carte but large enough for the table. We had the lobster mashed potatoes with large pieces of lobster in every bite. Since it was my son's birthday, the waiter brought out a strawberry shortcake with ice cream and whipped cream for the table. The manager stopped by and introduced himself and gave us business cards. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Simply put, Mastro's serves up flavorful steaks and accompaniments! I always recommend it for those looking for great food. If you dine in the bar, then manage your expectations accordingly. It is not fit for a quiet dinner. The bar is louder and more vibrant. To avoid that experience, make a reservation. The service is great. This was the first time that a water re-fill and plate removal went unnoticed. Usually, there is a rhythm to the servers that never misses. That was so minor. You must try this steakhouse, at least once. I've done so several times and will return."

  • "Finally I got to try this steak house, it was excellent. Our server was great, she wasn't pushing us to order, gave us plenty of time to look at the menu and explain the menu very well. I have the bone in Kansas city strip, it was fabulous, cooked to perfection. After dinner, we went to the bar to listen to the band that was playing, excellent band. Enjoyed the food, wine and the music. If you love steak this is the place to go."

  • "The food was very good and as other reviewers stated the Butter Cake is a must for dessert. But I have to say that it was way too noisy to enjoy the evening overall. The steak was very good but I have had better tasting. While we ate in the dining room the music in the bar was heard clearly. And it was great by the way. They should decide if they want to be an entertainment bar with food or a great restaurant with the ambience expected of same. Probably will not go back to dine but may go sit in lounge when I want to be entertained and dine."

  • "My wife and I went to Mastro's last Saturday and had a dining experience we will not soon forget. I had the Kansas City Strip and she had the petite filet mignon, along with lobster bisque, salad and cocktails. Wow! Extremely well prepared and as good as we have ever had. We loved the service--attentive, friendly and fun. Marco delivered on all fronts. At the end they treated us to their famous bread desert and the chef came out to speak with us. We told them that compared to other top end Chicago restaurants (we have seen a few), Mastro's comes out on top. The live music was also very entertaining. Thanks for a wonderful evening."

  • "The core food was outstanding. The appetizers were not of the same quality. Mastro's is very, very loud. In the bar, you need to lean over and literally speak directly into the other person's ear or they have to be good at reading lips. The dining room is almost as loud as the bar. The service was incredibly slow at first; our server was assigned another table of 8+. Drinks came 30 minutes after sitting. It was strange that guys in black suits with electronic ear pieces were roaming the dinning room floor, as if the area needed added security. In summary, great food, but very loud and hard to hold a conversation, not romantic, and service may be unpredictable. They should do better if they want to compete with the best in Chicago."

  • "The service was outstanding but the food was so average and I couldn't have been more dissppointed about spending $180 on my meal. Buttercake helped save face, but my bone in ribeye wasn't even good. Bavette's rib eye puts Mastros to shame. Chicago cut filet and side dishes are also far superior in my opinion. I was extremely underwhelmed and will never go back to Mastros for their mediocre food and outrageous pricing."
