Mastro's Steakhouse - Costa Mesasurprise fathers day dinnerI surprised my husband with a meal at Mastros. It was our first time. Everyone was very nice from the time we checked in to the gorgeous bar and great drinks. When we were done with our drinks the bartender let the front desk know we were ready to be seated. We were seated by the front door so that was kind of meh. Julian our waiter was nice &had some recommendations. We ordered oyster rockefeller and it was delicious. We shared a ceasar salad that was very good and it had warm crouton (yummmm). Our dinner consisted of bone-in rib eye (husband) and bone in filet mignon (me) we had onion rings as a side and brussel sprouts.This was a very special dinner.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Experience!I made a reservation requesting a nice area to celebrate our daughter's 17th birthday. The Mastro's team surprised us and gave us the Chef's Table. What a fabulous experience, not to mention a memorable one. The staff, especially our waitress Linda, was exceptional. The food was delicious as always and their special Tomahawk Steak was superb. You don't even have to ask for basic things, they just read your mind. It was my Fiancé's Birthday, I just mentioned about it accidentally, and at the end, they brought a big piece of chocolate birthday cake. We arrived 1 hour early for our reservation and we changed our table at the beginning 3 times, they were still nice and smily, trying to help us. Food came fast. However, I didn't like my steak (I ordered New York Strip Steak). It was a little bit salty for me, and even though I asked for a medium, they cooked it medium well, almost well done. The knowledge of our waiter with the steak menu was awesome, by far best place I've been to. Everything I expected and more, I really enjoyed my meal. It was good occasion to go there for my father's birthday, So my hats off to the staff, chefs, waiters, hostess, bartenders, and so on and so forth. The seared ahi is my boyfriends must have. For sides the lobster mashed potatoes: its tasty probably wouldn’t order again, unless your a huge fan of lobster. Gorgonzola mac and cheese: is actually really good, not a big fan of Gorgonzola but you can barely taste the Gorgonzola. Crab Gnocchi: not worth it, wasn't that good, I expected the gnocchi to be more fresh potato like tasted more like packaged barilla pasta. GRAND FINALE, Warm Butter Cake, seriously cannot leave without trying it, definitely not be disappointed. Their signature cut boned in filet was tender, juicy, and so flavorful! The steaks were cooked perfectly and our sides were delicious. The complimentary chocolate cake was rich and came in a huge slice with a big bowl of whipped cream. It was explained to us that individual chocolate chips were melted in to each layer! The room we were in had a beautiful garden view, and the fountain lit up once it was dark outside. Our server Linda came highly recommended, her service was attentive and friendly, which made the whole dining experience at Mastro's special. "We sit people right at 5:00" was the statement from the hostess. When we were finally seated there were plenty of empty tables. It seemed odd to make us wait. Obviously we were not told the truth by the hostess. We were not dissappointed, the food was amazing, our steaks were flavorful and cooked perfectly! I had requested a romantic quiet table as it was our anniversary. They gave us a table by the window that was quiet for a bit. Great food, good service, my fiancé loved the wine, you get what you pay for and I paid for all these things, portions are larger than other steakhouses we have been to, actually ended up with a "to go" bag. The crab stuffed mushrooms were very delicious with chunks of crab meat. Very big size mushrooms and generous portions for an appetizer. Their wine list is fabulous. We had the Dr. L Reisling which was pefect. The lobster bisque was absolutely delicious. I had the 2 -7oz size Australian lobster tails. Many restaurants do not serve these lobsters. They are the best. They were perfect and sweet. We also had the rack of lamb which was perfect temperature and perfectly done. Very good. For sides we had the Lobster mashed potatoes and asparagus. This was the best dish we ever had. It was just decadent. There was large chunks of Maine lobster in the potatoes. The Key Lime pie is huge and delicious. Arrived at 5:30pm with a reservation and was greeted politely and shown to our table with no wait. Excellent. Within minutes our waiter introduced ourselves and we explained we had never been there before so he spent extra time explaining the menu and specials for the day. . The wife LOVED her dinner (filet mignon) and could not say enough good things about it. I thought my NY strip was a little fatty but normal for that cut. I thought the noise level was very high for a high end restaurant (it was packed) and had to basically yell to have a conversation. With dinner, tip, and valet, it was a $250.00 night. All of us found something incredible for both dinner and dessert and couldn't stop raving about our choices. Our server, Nico was great. He was very patient with mom.
The restaurant was must noisier than I would have expected (and care for) especially for such a high end place. It made it somewhat challenging to converse over our meal. I was also disappointed that, in spite of having reservations, we waiting close to 15 minutes to be seated. Also, there is VERY limited lobby seating. We usually visit the Ocean Club for special dinners. Upon arriving, we never have to wait and were seated immediately even though we were early for our reservation. The restaurant was crowded as you would expect for Mother's Day. Although crowded, the noise level was remarkably quiet. Our waiter showed up right as we were seated with menus and dining suggestions. The food was exactly as ordered and I would suggest the filet, though my girlfriend would suggest the veal chop. The lobster mashed potatoes were wonderful.

The ambiance is inviting and either fun-in the bar area or romantic in the main dining room.
