My wife and I enjoyed our evening, receiving the food and ambiance that one has come to expect from Masa's. The problem was with the waiter. While he was superficially pleasant, he really did not listen to our needs. After taking our order, he asked whether we had food allergies. We told him yes, to walnuts, and he confirmed that the food was free of them, and that he would also inform the chef. The two of the four dishes arrived with walnuts! He asked us this question, wrote down the answer, and then proceeded to himself deliver food with walnuts. He also asked how we wanted the squab prepared--we said medium, but it arrived medium rare/rare. Although his service was below average, others were excellent.

What is not to like about this restaurant. The food was wonderful, the service was even better and upon arriving we were greeted and show immediately to our table. The sommelier was very helpful in our selection of a wine and we were amazed by the dessert. The only thing that I will say is that the prix fixe menu is a little pricey, and the addition of a nice bottle of wine will cost you.

We were in San Francisco all last week. We dined at Masa's, Gary Danko, Benu, Atelier Crenn, and Spruce. Masa's was the most perfect and satisfying evening of them all. However, it was the least patronized of them all as well. There were only five tables seated while we were there. We left hoping more people hear about this place and give it the support it richly deserves. We'd hate to see San Francisco lose this gem.

We had the 4 course tasting menu and the quality and taste of the food were superb. However, the portions were too small. We were told that the portions for the 4 course were bigger than for the 9 course but there is no way the portions could have been smaller. For example on the middle course I had the diver scallops and it only had 1 scallop. What do they do for the 9 course, half a scallop? But the food was really delicious and made up for this setback.

My wife and I make it a point to visit Masa's at least once a year, and always feel like we are coming back to visit with old friends, a bit of a rarity in a fine dining establishment like Masa's. Masa's offers a choice of a 4-course meal (with a remarkable 3 or 4 choice per course) or a 9 course culinary extravaganza. If your wallet allows it, go with the 9-course and wine pairing by the incomparable wine sommelier and general manager, Alan Murray. The wine pairings reflect Mr. Murray's love of his craft, of which he is a master. The chef allows the ingredients to shine by refraining from over use or overpowering seasoning. The flavors he brings out in his dishes are genius and thoroughly pleasing to the most discerning palates.

Generally, I was unimpressed with all the dishes presented to us. 1st course: Dungeness crab- fairly lacking in flavor, and nothing extraordinary. 2nd course: White striped bass- the fish was prepared nicely, but the included sauce was very watery and didn't add any good flavor to the dish. 3rd course: squab- was alright, but again, nothing too special. 4th course: Gateau des carrottes- an amusingly petite 1.5"x1.5"x0.5" piece of carrot cake, which did taste decent. This certainly isn't the place to show up with an appetite. And, having to wait over 10 minutes for the valet to bring the car up? I left with my appetite unsatisfied, and annoyed at the wait.

My wife and I went because of Masa's reputation as a classic, but had been warned by some reviews that it might not be as good any more. The reviews were wrong. Our experience was quite pleasant. The food is not that expensive, and was excellent. We both had selections from the four course prix fixe. Quality, taste and texture were notable, and we were pleasantly full. Service was more than adequate, although our waiter seems somewhat nervous. He was certainly knowledgeable and attentive. Not as smooth as the service at Gary Danko's and Foreign Cinema, but to me well worth an extra high tip. Easy to park, so we didn't use the valet. Room is attractive. Noise is moderate, but comfortable. We will definitely return.

The staff was very friendly and attentive and the food was beautiful and delicious. They even brought out or dessert with a mini sparkler and Happy Anniversary" written on the plate in chocolate. It made the night very special. I would definitely recommend Masa.

We have been to a number of highly rated restaurants, but none matched the impeccable service we had at Masas, right from the Valet attendants to the individuals that looked after us all evening. The people at Masa's provide top notch, unobtrusive service without being stuffy and making you feel uncomfortable. The food was outstanding, cheese course was divine and the Chef accomodated a birthday request I had made through the open table comments section, which impressed me, as I didn't think anyone really read those. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Masa's staff for making my husband's birthday such a wonderful experience for us.

I really wanted this meal to be memorable and it was but for the wrong reasons. The menu was disappointing. We chose the 4 course meal and were unexcited by the entree choices (rabbit, squab and quail). It was hard to pick bc I had no interest in any of them. The desserts were also just "eh." Last complaint will sound like I am a naive diner but, most portions were miniscule. They looked more like portions on a tasting menu. Service was attentive except when I noticed I hadn't seen our server in awhile. When I inquired, I was told his shift ended. He didn't tell us or introduce who was taking over for him. (That's how I was trained when I was a server.) I did love the ambience though. Gorgeous room, quiet, and comfortable seating.

The servers are gracious and prompt, but never overbearing, the food is absolutely fabulous, with divine courses that make your mouth water even when just reading about them, and the setting is so perfectly lovely. This is a perfect place for a romantic celebration (although the one larger group of businessmen was a little strange) or a simply lovely way to spend a random evening. Can't wait to go back.
