A word from Masala Art DC
'Too much is so good, you can't stop eating it. The tandoor-baked breads are not mere swabs for sauce but could be eaten, and enjoyed, on their own; the naan with cilantro and rock salt is terrific, as is the kulcha richly stuffed with minced lamb. Masala Art offers combinations you don't see often around here, but even its more familiar dishes can be revelations. Consider its samosas. They're flakier than a lot of the competition, and their filling of peas, potatoes and sweet raisins tastes fresher, too. A burst of cardamom in every bite helps. In the same vein, soft logs of minced lamb pulse with heat from jalapeno peppers, a shock offset with breezy mint. Pureed spinach is a vibrant green, flecked with corn and rich with garlic...' - WashingtonPost.com Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I shared 3 appetizers and 1 entree -- and it was all delicious. And of course, we had their incredible rock salt nan."

  • "WE had a delicious dinner at Masala Art. We have been there several times and the food is always good."

  • "Sometimes you can get lost in the shuffle at Masala. The menu is varied, the food is terrific, and the service is attentive...mostly. Every now and then (we live in the neighborhood and eat here often), your order just takes forever to come. The waiter apologized."

  • "For the money, I'm not sure you can beat Masala Art. All your favorite dishes from every region of India and Pakistan are available, but with quality ingredients not usually associated with restaurants serving that style food. Service was not on par with the food, but Indian restaurants rarely are. We had issues with food descriptions and our server had zero wine knowledge. I'm pretty sure one of our apps was not what we ordered(It was still great). It didn't matter though, management picked up the slack with a complementary desert and sparkling wine for my gf's bday. I could not have been more pleased with my experience at Masala Art. I will definitely be back. Thank you for the wonderful evening! Keep up the good work!"

  • "While I'd recommend this restaurant, I'm not sure I would return myself. The ambience was modern yet zen-like, which was very nice. The lighting was dim and I expected it to be moderately quiet. Instead, there was a large group that was noisey and two kids who cried throughout dinner. This was a Saturday night. Most of the food was great but the lamb cubes were so dry that we had to ask for extra sauce. The service was great though, no complaints there."

  • "Every bite of the tandoori prawns was a spice explosion. This place is a true gem and a real treat in Tenleytown. It's known for superb Indian dishes seasoned to stimulate your tastebuds and it does not disappoint. Everything is wonderful from the greeting at the door to the recommendations for dessert. Terrific."

  • "All the elements are in sync -- food, service, atmosphere -- which is why Masala Art is on our regular rotation. We especially love the Bhelpuri, any of the lamb dishes, and the amazing rock salt nan. Plus, there's no better extra dry vodka martini in town."

  • "We have been to Masala Art on several occasions, but it is doubtful that we will return any time soon. The waiter totally forgot that we were there and we had to wait close to 1/2 hour to give our order (I had to ask the hostess to send him over- even though he was serving the tables around us). Then the food came out in a rush. We were not done with the appetizers and they brought out main courses. It was unpleasant to be scraping first courses onto main course plates while the wait staff stood there with out stretched arms to take the plates away. We are not neighborhood locals, we actually drive 20 minutes to get there and it had been one that we have taken out of town friends and had birthday celebrations, but never again."

  • "Went for the lunch buffet, and enjoyed it. Food was tasty, with 4-5 entrees to choose from, as well as soup, salad ingredients, and a fresh fruit dessert. Very fairly priced."

  • "Masala Art is our go-to joint after a concert at National Cathedral. We also frequent Rasika. Masala Art is a good match for RasiKa at 1/3 the price. $30 for a bottle of wine instead of $150. There isn't a 30/150 difference in the bottles."

  • "It has been a while since I went to Masala Art - and something was not quite right. Nothing was objectionable - but the warmth and welcome that I remember from previous visits was not there. I remember being so thrilled that Masala Art had accommodated a special food request one of the past times I had dined - and I asked if they could do so again this time. The categoric answer was "no": apparently such niceties only happen when the owner is around (he wasn't on this occasion). That being said, the food was good, and the wait staff friendly. It is a good restaurant to have in the neighborhood. I just hope that the restaurant can work on keeping up its "feel" even when the key man is absent."

  • "This place serves serious Indian food, definitely a notch above the usual Punjabi (Pakistani-Indian) neighborhood curry joint. Go explore the complex dishes that hail from various parts of the subcontinent."

  • "The appetizers are so good I have resolved to stick with those for dinner. There is a lamb kabob appetizer that is just amazing."

  • "Masala Art is on our regular dining rotation for good reason: consistently well-prepared, flavorful food (don't miss the incredible Rock Salt nan) and first-table service."

  • "This is the second time I've eaten at Masala Art's lunch buffet when the food has been good but not great. I'm vegetarian, so I can't comment about the meat items. But the hot vegetable offerings were lukewarm and not very flavorful. And the naan tasted stale and chewy. It's time for the kitchen to reinvigorate the buffet. In the meantime, I look forward to eating dinner at Masala Art."

  • "Food was great and the service was good, No complaints. I recommend this Indian restaurant. They definitely know how to make Vindaloo properly. It was deliciously spicy."

  • "As a vegetarian, I am used to having one or two possible options at restaurants. At Masala Art there were so many choices I had to ask the server for a recommendation, and even then my only complaint is I wanted to order 1/2 serving of two choices, and that didn't seem possible. We met a group of friends at the restaurant, and we were very glad to have a reservations because it was busy on a Saturday night. Everyone else eats meat (Non-Vegetarian Specialties on the menu -- got to love the title!) but even so some people ordered vegetarian dinners because they were just so wonderful. One of us is newly in recovery, so it was also a great place to go because they had lots of non-alcoholic drinks for us to order to support our friend."

  • "This is a great place for meat eaters & veggies alike. Its hard to eat out an find places which offer a good selection of tasty veggie food, the veggie dishes here are fantastic. Even my meat eating Hubby was "wowed" by them. Highly recommend."

  • "This is my second time to Masala Art -- My wife and I live in Tennessee, but we have family in the area, and my daughter turned me onto Masala Art. What I love about this restaurant is that while the flavors are distinctly Indian, they are also fresh and new -- not just another Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh or Dal Makhani. Yes, those dishes are on the menu, but other dishes that give you new flavor experiences, like the appetizer Dahi Balle ("velvety lentil dumplings"), Chicken 65 (south Indian spices), or the uncommonly green Lamb Neelgiri Korma. We'll be back!"

  • "As usual, appetizers were better than main dishes. Love the samosas, cauliflower appetizer, broccoli fritters, dal."

  • "We had a great time and enjoyed the food. The only thing I would say is that the waiter came to the table to ask us questions too much and was refilling the wine every second. We also felt a little kicked out at the end. Everything else was perfect though, (my husband said his veal was a little dry.)."

  • "We've eaten here at least a dozen times, not counting home delivery meals, and this restaurant has never disappointed. It's possible that the heat level of some of the offerings has been dialed back a bit in recent visits, but for many diners this will not be bad news. Given this restaurant's attentiveness to its customers, I'm certain those who prefer more heat would be accommodated. In any event, sleepy Tenleytown remains lucky to have a restaurant as good as Masala Art."

  • "Masala Art DC continues to serve the best Indian cuisine in the area. This pleasing but not especially fancy restaurant has a cheerful atmosphere, the dishes are continually updated (even the long running favorites are modified over time) and new dishes are added. It is always a pleasure to eat here. It's a romantic but not gushy place to eat a fine meal."

  • "Masala Art did not live up to my recollections: the bread was tasteless, and my tandoori salmon was dry but bright red enough to cause problems later on. Others at the table, perhaps they were just being companionable, seemed to enjoy the food."
    Dined on 1/4/2014
  • "Masala Art is one of the best spots for Indian food in the area -- always excellent food, nice ambiance, great service, and vegetarian- and gluten-free-friendly. Surprising it is not on more "best" lists -- it deserves to be."

  • "My college age daughter insisted we go to Masala Art together. She had been there with her boyfriend, in the restaurant business for years. I did not have to force my pleasure with the meal nor service. Really a delight and a great find. Yes I'll be sending my NW DC friends directly. Also NE, but not as convenient. Perhaps they will open a restaurant in the Brookland vicinity."

  • "This time, my husband & i made a meal of 4 appetizers and the rock salt naan and enjoyed every mouthful. Plus -- Masala Art makes the best extra dry vodka martini we've experienced in the whole MD/DC area. And as always, the service was first rate."

  • "The lunch buffet at Masala was again delicious and varied. This is one of DC's best bargains!"

  • "After seeing a movie on Christmas afternoon, we opted to have dinner out at an Indian establishment rather than the "customary" Chinese. After all, Washington has far more good Indian than Chinese establishments. Masala Art did not disappoint and we enjoyed our customary order of well-prepared and seasoned vegetarian selections. The establishment had good patronage and service was at the same level as non-holidays."

  • "On of our favorite DC restaurants. Food is always very good - great range of choices - and if you like Indian food hard to find a better spot in DC. Owner is usually on site and ensures a nice dining experience. Service consistently first rate - Responsive but never rush you, and very knowledgeable."
