There were 2 or 3 courses for $78 or $97 & a Nigiri plate on offer for in between. That night 's menu also included separate pieces a la carte and menu for dessert and teas a la carte. Our bill came to nearly $400 for our party of 2. We selected one 2- course with 2 glasses of 2 different white wines and one 3-course with 3 glasses of a red. The courses all looked beautiful but none tasted as spectacular as we expected: no "yummmm" reactions as at other similar sushi or Oriental - French fusion restaurants in other large cities.. The service was completely attentive throughout. I had asked for a private quiet table prior to arrival and we had one in a back alcove which was perfect for conversation . A lovely but expenslve dinner.

This small room almost feels like a private dining room. The socalled three course pre fixe dinner is really six or seven courses as each course contains two dishes. And what an array!!!!! Sushi you have never seen before. Sashimi with the freshest and often unusual fish. Toro that is almost white. Wines a little over priced. But then, everything costs. Nonetheless, we never felt we were being ripped off.

High end 22 seater restaurant goes all out to provide you contemporary presentation of high end seafood through 2 - 3 course tasting menues or an omakase offering. Everything was delicious, even the dessert, which I don't normally consider in a Japanese restaurant. With the small size of the restaurant, you really were able to get 'white glove' service.

This is a very small restaurant which serves very good Japanese food. Its a "first date" restaurant - very quiet, with outstanding food, beautiful decor. The offerings include tasting menus and individual dishes. Included were fried whole shrimp - a new item for me. I ate the body and tried a nibble at the head. It was so good that I continued nibbling until I finished it entirely. The fried lotus was the best I had ever tasted. Dessert included a Tapioca and Passion Fruit Layer cake. The combination of sweet and sour was perfectly balanced and not too rich - a perfect finish to an excellent meal. Prices are about what one would expect. There is a web site which has the menu. Definitely recommend it it that wasn't yet obvious.

Was expecting an authentic Japanese experience. The chef is Italian and he doesn't know anything abt Japanese. When asked what the restaurant characters mean? He said he had no idea becoz he simply copy those words from Goggle. Terrible experience. If u looking for real Japanese food go to Kai Zan instead.

Beautiful, small dining room with mood setting Japanese instrumental music playing. Extremely good service with two people managing my table as a single diner. Went here on a friend's recommendation. This is some of the best sushi/japanese food I've had in Chicago - and really anywhere. Did the five course tasting menu (warning: it's a little more than you expect, as ours was more like two contrasting courses each)(which were incredible). My wife and I were blown away - and we do a *lot* of sushi in our house. Phenomenal. Can't wait to go back.

Masaki stands up to the best kaiseki meal in Japan. It is a little more contemporary than a comparable meal in Japan, but each dish is perfectly composed, combining the finest premium ingredients (more than just fresh) with flavorable but not overwhelming sauces and a beautiful presentation. Everything is of the highest quality, including the ma-cha powdered green tea, but the extreme quality does come at a cost. For special occasions the cost is well worth it.

All I can say is WoW. From the presentation of the food to the service....everything was exceptional. I do think the alcohol prices were a bit on the high side and honestly needs to be lowered some. The Chefs definitely have the highest of standards and skill for everything was excellent. My wife and I both chose the five course tasting menu and we were both truly stuffed....a first at a sushi restaurant. This was definitely worth the cost. I will never forget my dining experience at Masaki and would like to bring my mother here some day. My mother is old school Japanese and would very much enjoy this experience.

Masaki is a zen-like Japanese dining experience. Keep in mind, this is not your traditional sushi experience a la Katsu, but it is more of a fine dining adventure. The chef focuses on tasting menus, and is very inventive with his sushi and desserts, especially. You can expect flavorful nigiri, such as uni-stuffed squid and Jalapeno-topped hamachi. The sushi is pre-sauced, and often comes with different Japanese picked vegetables. There is a vegetarian tasting menu, and they seem very good on that side of the coin. Cooked dishes are good, and the sashimi is only okay. The fish is pre-sliced, and let's be frank, the sushi chef and staff are not Japanese so this is far from traditional, but otherwise, it is a great dining experience.

This restaurant has only 20 seats and we were the only customers the whole time we were there for a Monday lunch. The food was just not very good for the high prices. Service is great, decor is lovely, the presentation if beautiful. But none of that really matters if the food doesn't taste great. The fish for sashimi and nigiri just were not that fresh or flavorful. The salmon was probably the best bite I had. Even the cooked food was slightly off. Pan seared scallops were overcooked and top shell clams were too chewy. The only redeeming feature of the meal was the passion fruit tapioca black sesame cookie dessert, which was quite interesting and very yummy. Not sure if it was worth $18 though.

Masakii is a rarity these days--intimate, small, comfortable, relaxing. An oasis of hospitality and calm in the madhouse of the Mag Mile. The only downside is dodging irate tourists checking into the adjacent hotel. The preparation and presentation of food is top notch, the service welcoming and helpful, not stuffy and stifling.

Dined at Masaki as we are fans of their "sister" restaurant Pelago. In this first visit, we had the 5 course tasting menu which were actually 10 plates (2 plates a course). The toro and uni sushi was superb, some of the best ever tasted. Included was poached sea bass -very tender, also waygru beef tartar - very tasteful. Presentation was excellent and the accompanied broths and sauces with each dish made the dinner special. We were full by the end of the third course. Since we are not big drinkers, we did not try their saki menu; however, their tea menu was excellent and the preparation at table side was excellent. The restaurant i atmosphere is good and the wait staff attentive without being too intrusive. Overall would dine there again.

I can't explain in enough detail how amazing this place was in terms of service, quality of food and overall ambiance. We were waited on hand and "purse" since they have those cute stools for your handbag. The host and servers we very attentive, informative about the menu and food as well as eager to please. My husband travels extensively throughout Asia and Japan and found the quality and authenticity of the food to be exactly what he finds and upscale restaurants in Tokyo. We had the 5 Course Meal and were pleased with every dish that was included. Anyone with a high expectation of sushi should try Masaki. You won't be disappointed.

Dining at Masaki was like being transported to Japan. The artistry the chefs take in creating culinary masterpieces almost make the food too beautiful to eat - serving plates and platters are designed to showcase the food. A feast for the eyes for sure - followed by some unique dishes and flavors that I have not experienced at other Japanese restaurants in Chicago. Service is very attentive– even little rests to keep your handbag off the floor. This is a small, intimate restaurant for those that appreciate fine Japanese food. Located on Mies Van Der Rohe close to the MCA and Hancock Tower - the location is terrific and special valet parking rate is a nice amenity. Masaki is a special place - not your average neighborhood sushi joint!
