  • "We just did a salad and tapas. This is not just any tapas place---the selections are inventive and excellent. The chef creates interesting combinations of flavors that work very well: for example, try the skirt steak with caramel. We also had a broiled artichoke wirh feta and orange flavoring plate that was very good. The wine list is very good, with good range that made it fun to think about what to pair with the food . Service was attentive, helpful but not intrusive. I really hope this place does well---ABQ is not known for its ability to sustain good restaurants."

  • "As mentioned in previous reviews, downtown is a ghost town after dark. The one bright spot is this amazing Spanish Tapas and Wine place. We were four of us and we basically shared every tapas on the menu. Everything was incredible but the huge standouts were the shrimp and the steak with salted caramel sauce (weird but addicting). If your stuck downtown make sure you visit this place."

  • "First time dining here; although it was good and an enjoyable dining experience, but we won't be rushing back. My guest and I were surprised and disappointed that no wine flights were available, and wine selection was rather limited. The bread, artichoke tapas, papas, and salads were excellent. The paella was much too spicy overwhelmed by the chorizo, and the steak was drizzled with what appeared to be bottled Worcestershire sauce. The dessert menu was also very limited. I miss Cosmo Tapas! La Boca will now be our choice for tapas, unfortunately it's in Santa Fe."

  • "Prepare to be surprised, and pleasantly so, by the dishes served here. Someone in that kitchen is dreaming up unexpected flourishes, sauces, and sides for seemingly every selection. Try the mezze platter for starters. I had the salmon, which was sauced and accompanied with obvious care and expertise. A table-mate loved the paella. This has become a must-visit restaurant for me when visiting Albuquerque."

  • "We booked dinner the night before Valentine's Day. Apparently, others had the same idea, as the restaurant was busy. With the exception of the hostess station, the restaurant was understaffed and seemed unprepared for the number of customers. It took twenty minutes for a waiter to take our order. He completely forgot the bottle of wine we ordered and substituted a different tapa for one that we requested. On the plus side, the food was quite good."

  • "I HAVE REVIEWED MAS BEFORE, BUT IN THE LIGHT OF STILL ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY DINING EXPERIENCE, I'M HAPPY TO DO SO AGAIN. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME I'VE DINED THERE AND EACH TIME HAS BEEN A DELIGHT. CHEF JAMES CARUSO CONSTANTLY CREATES NEW DISHES THAT ADD TO AN ALREADY SUPERLATIVE DINING EXPERIENCE. I ORDERED SEVEN TAPAS TO SHARE WITH MY TWO GUESTS AND EACH HAD ITS OWN SURPRISING PALATE PLEASING SURPRISE. THE SALMON APPETIZERS ON CRISP WONTONS IS ALWAYS A FAVORITE, BUT THE ADDITION OF CRAB-FILLED PEPPERS IN AN AMAZING CREAMY SAUCE AND THE NEW PREPARATION FOR GAMBAS IN A PEPPERY SAUCE ADDED TO THE SEAFOOD DELIGHTS. AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT TO A SUCCESSFUL DINING EXPERIENCE IS A GOOD WAITER--I CANNOT IMAGINE A BETTER ONE THAT ERIC. SUPERB!"

  • "After all the press I was expecting another excellent restaurant. Unfortunately, it was not to be so. My friends, spouse and I were rather disappointed because the service was not consistent nor attentive. After noticing we were one menu short, the person that seated us did not return with another as promised. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list but didn't check back with us as often as we thought he should have. As a result, our evening was quite short and further sales were lost. The food was lukewarm and not particularly notable. Tapas servings are noticeably small and quite expensive for what you get. All things considered I don't think I'll return to try something else."

  • "This restaurant serves tapas as well as entrees. I only had the tapas, but they were quite well executed. While not particularly inventive and a bit over-priced, it is a good value and attractive atmosphere for a hotel restaurant. The bar in the lobby has excellent atmosphere as well, with private cubby rooms that can be reserved for small parties. There is often a small band which really adds to the scene."

  • "I took my "significant other" to MAS for his birthday, while staying overnight at Hotel Andaluz. Thrilled to discover Chef Caruso owns MAS!. Had to cancel prior night's table at La Boca and my BF was so disappointed..Loved MAS! Great food! Great Surf & Turf special! Wonderful servers (Krystal was incredible). Returned for breakfast next am and had unbelievably fabuluous French Toast. Otto was awesome. Servers know the menu, are able to answer any questions and also to suggest wine pairings. Will definitely return! ."

  • "Went out for my Birthday with the girls for wine and tapas. Wasn't disappointed. Excellent wait staff attended to our every request. Did not feel rushed. We would only be able to come on special occasions, as the tapa prices were just a little high for regular after work visits. It was a very nice evening."

  • "Wonderful to see that there were plenty of meat-free tapas options in keeping with the hotel's environmentally friendly theme. Given that the tapas were half price at happy hour, we ordered too much food and then managed to eat it all anyway because everything was delicious. I will happily return for happy hour because we were able to have a drink and enough tapas to constitute dinner for under $20 per person. Our server was professional, though it is easy to be forgotten when you are out of sight in the casbahs and we had to flag her down since timing was an issue. It pleased me to see that my friends were even commenting on "how pretty" the casbahs were, so I was glad to have chosen Mas for our reunion happy hour."

But, we just simply did not enjoy the food and food pairings. We thought the food was not that great all around and we probably had about six different dishes.   • "Albuquerque is blessed to now have a restaurant, "Mas," under the direction of a James Beard finalist Chef James Caruso. Before we would have to travel to Santa Fe to taste his wonderful tapas and entrees at La Boca or Taverna. Caruso has truly brought Spain to New Mexico in his presentation of tapas beautifully prepared. Don't miss his grilled artichokes, his perfect salmon taco canapes, his patatas bravas, his marvelous grilled eggplant. Whether you go for a full dinner or simply drinks and tapas, it is extraordinary. The upscale dining room has a New York City feel and is located in the historic Hotel Alvarez. My favorite waiter there is Eric who knows how to properly space the serving of a large number of tapas. Bravo, Caruso!"

  • "Tapas means several plates at different times, which puts more demand on wait staff. Either this place is understaffed or they haven't figured out the service, because service was slow and orders were not prepared as ordered. Nice ambiance and has good potential if they get it together."

  • "The food here is top notch and unique. Wonderful variety of tapas - all delicious. The specials of the night, especially the duck tapa dish and caprese with mozzarella, were outstanding. On the regular tapa menu, the bruschetta with truffle, monchego cheese and a fried egg, was our group favorite on two occasions. This night we had some service glitches starting with the valet service. No valet appeared even after talking with the maître d'. Had to park several blocks away and pay in a parking garage. The maître d' did apologize and comped our first round of tapas - nice. Unfortunately our waiter was not very attentive and missing for so long, it deterred us from ordering any more tapas. Will try again - food is worth it."

  • "The three tapas we selected were beautifully presented, spectacularly good, and large enough to be split three ways. The Caesar salad was pretty ordinary, and seemed to have more romaine ribs than leaves. Our entree was a very good paella, which featured several perfectly cooked jumbo shrimp, with some clams, chicken and Spanish chorizo, but was dominated by the somewhat dry saffron rice. We had a very friendly, efficient and attentive waitstaff. Overall a very enjoyable dining experience!"

  • "We frequent this restuarnt often. Our number one selection are the bacon wrapped dates. We also bring friends and my wife brings out of town business associates to this establishment , so they can experience the wonderful dates. With their latest change, the dates have been removed from the menu. Very disappointing. Hopefully they will return. When they do so willl our visits."

  • "We have been to Mas twice recently. The first time we had just tapas y vino, and left hungry. This time we had 2 tapas, a Caesar sald and and entree and split it all between 2 of us. It was probably one too many tapas but they were delicious. The bruschetta with egg on top was fantastic! The shrimp champ as was also very good - the accompanying sauce made it. The Caesar salad was extra garlicky - very good. We had the hangar steak entree which was well seasoned and the potatoes and carrots that came with it were crispy and delicious. We had a Spanish tinto wine that was the perfect accompaniment to our meal."

  • "We have eaten at Chef Caruso's La Boca in Santa Fe and really enjoyed it. Last night we tried his new restaurant at Hotel Andaluz in ABQ and also enjoyed this experience. Each of our items was excellent (flat iron steak with a sea-salt caramel sauce, the lamb, the fillet, the salads and the desserts. It would be nice if there were a few more gluten free options, but the waiter (Eric) brought us some celery so that those at the table with gluten issues could still sample the hot gouda, chorizo, apple bake w/ crostini. His wine selections were also very good. The main restaurant is a little noisy, so next time we are going to book farther in advance and request a casbah--they look like a lot of fun!"

  • "We had a group of 8 celebrating an art opening and we thought the food was very good - we just didn't get enough of it. We ordered tapas and wine as the name of the restaurant suggests, and in spite of ordering more than one order of several tapas, we all felt like we had one taste of many things but not enough to feel satisfied. The wine was free flowing - more so than the food - which was ok but again not satisfying. We will try again and perhaps order entrees rather than just tapas y vino."

  • "My wife and I stopped in on a Wednesday night for a quick and early dinner prior to the Joe Bonamassa concert. We ordered tapas and dessert and then walked to the ABQ Convention Center for the concert. The restaurant was nearly full and the bar was hopping. The restaurant is just a short walk from the convention center and the food and the service here is first rate, so this will be our new go-to place for dinner when we are visiting the convention center or the Kimo."
