This is a downtown gem that combines the old and the very new. Chef's special bass was first class. Come to see Conrad Hilton's hotel with paintings and wood and stay for the music and food to die for.

It was our first time being at Albuquerque and I found about Mas online. The cuisine is great. We were there for lunch so I imagine dinner must be as excellent as lunch. It has good atmosphere. Mas will please every palate. The surrounding near the reception is magical, breathtaking, peaceful and must see. You are transported to another world. Bon appetit

If you have been to Spain and like "tapas" and delicious different food…this is the place. From all the tapas we asked we all agreed that the Flank Steak with a salted caramel sauce was the winner. The artichokes with goat cheese was excellent as well as the asparagus with smoked salmon. Perhaps the one dish I was disappointed was the Gambas al ajillo." In Spain it is simply fried shrimp in olive oil and a lot of garlic. Here it had a tomatoey and chile sauce. The wine was a delicious Tempranillo, which went well with everything we ordered. There was live music, which added to the atmosphere. The service was friendly and professional. Great restaurant!

My husband and I visited for a date night recently and had such a great experience. We shared a bottle of wine and six tapas plates, each one better than the one before. The bacon wrapped dates were our favorite! The menu is very rustic and ingredient driven - nothing unpronounceable or pretentious, just great food.

  • It's open on Sunday

If you like to eat out on Sunday, as we do, Albuquerque is a challenge. Had previously looked for tapas restaurants open Sunday to no avail. Was pleasantly surprised to find now that MAS Tapas y Vino is open Sunday. So my husband and I went for our collective birthdays celebration. The decor is quite pleasant. The service was mixed. Rather slow. But the most annoying thing was even though we told the head waiter we would be sharing all the tapas plates and he thanked us for letting him know that, when each one arrived the servers always wanted to give it to only one of us. We love tapas, but were not impressed by the tastes and flavors at MAS. And it was rather pricey for tapas-sized servings. All in all, OK, but I doubt we'll return.

We had great food at Mas recently. Our server was supposedly also the sommelier but brought the wrong bottle of wine not once, but twice! His listening and wine skills need serious improvement. If you order wine, ensure that you get what you order, including the year on the bottle. The new menu additions are great and just in time as we were tiring of the same old... The bacon wrapped dates are fabulous and the presentation is cool too. The gambas fritas and the hangar steak, while from the prior menu, are still outstanding! and the paella is perfection.

Mas is located inside the beautiful Hotel Andaluz, an historic hotel that has been lovingly restored but is somewhat out of place in the cruising scene of downtown ABQ. Stylistically, there are clean lines & sharp angles - which means it's nice to be greeted warmly upon arrival, as we were. The menu is somewhat more limited that it's sister (mother?) restaurant in Santa Fe, but there are still lots of options. A friend was very happy with his duck & also chorizo/Gouda plate (the latter is heavy & should be shared), & we both liked the Spanish cheese plate (nearly comically large pieces compared to in La Boca) &fried Brussels sprouts. My quinoa & grilled avocado dish was pretty lifeless - a rare miss for Mas where most dishes are great

...in Albuquerque, that is. I live in Santa Fe and have eaten many times at Chef Caruso's other two tapas restaurants there. One big difference is that the room in ABQ is BIG compared to tight at Taberna and very tight at La Boca. We spoke with Mr. Caruso during our meal and he said he preferred the close quarters at La Boca because it reminded him of Spain. Service was excellent - which is important if you're eating tapas because there is a lot of clearing of empty plates and one should really order multiple times rather than all up front. [Even if you order all up front, it will arrive a dish or two over time] I like open kitchens and this one is very visible but far enough away that it is entertaining and not intrusive.

This was our second lunch at Mas and it did not disappoint. This menu abounds with flavor! I had shrimp cooked in white wine, butter and sherry which was possibly the best shrimp dish I have ever eaten. We shared the tapas potatas brava which were bright with spice and vigor. Our guests had a salad of Serrano ham rolled around fruit. We shared a wonderful molten chocolate cake for dessert. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and well-trained. Mas is a touch of Spain in Albuquerque, but our guests said the shrimp dish was better than anything they had eaten in Spain!

This was our third visit. Great food at reasonable prices in a very hip setting. We have yet to get an entree. This time it was 6 tapas plates - we always get the crispy potatos to fill up on then try whatever we have not had yet. The dates in bacon were fantastic. It is in a lovely boutique hotel and my girlfriend likes dressing up and taking pictures when we go out so this place works perfectly.

We dined two consecutive evenings at Mas Tapas y Vino, the first with a group of six and the second just the two of us. Both evenings the plates featured quality ingredients, mostly suburb preparations and lovely presentations. In one instance the pork tenderloin tapas (one piece) was served very rare and was clearly not prepared to the correct temperature (the second piece was served perfectly medium rare). The situation was remedied, although a bit slowly. Service was spotty. On the first night, the wait person was friendly and accommodated some special requests from one member of our party. On the second night, we had to request a fork, small plates and bread. On both nights the wait staff failed to provide prices for specials.

Food and Service were excellent. My reservation was set up in their system perfectly. Being from other big cities I have high expectations for Tapas. Can be a little on the pricey side for dinner but definitely good for a special occasion. Recommend that if you are going for a meal it would be cheaper to not do all tapas and get just one or two with entrees. Great prices for lunch and even breakfast. Would recommend to all!

Stayed at the Hotel Andaluz to catch an early morning flight home after two weeks in Santa Fe . We were looking for something convenient with no expectations for a hotel restaurant, but were pleasantly surprised. Classic Spanish small plates, well prepared with a solid wine list. Quiet dining room and adequate service. The hotel is nicely appointed with friendly and competent staff.

My only minor complaint is that they were out of the first three or four bottles of wine we wanted to order. It was, however, a Tuesday, and I have no idea when they get their wine deliveries so it was probably just a sad coincidence left over from a busy weekend. The food here is some of the best and classiest in ABQ. I recommend Mas to everyone that visits town and everyone who lives here too!

Birthday dinner began with cocktails, loved the Zsa Zsa Cosmo (graoefruit juice and St. Germain) and Mexican mojito (tequila in lieu of rum). Ordered 4 tapas plates which was plenty. Spanish peppers grilled with cashews, a salad made from Roma tomatoes, heirloom spinach and grilled feta plus garlic shrimp and a queso with chorizo. All yummy. Dessert was on the house so we decided on the steamed chocolate cake. Fabulous, eat it with a spoon it's so moist. Lots of interesting wines by the glass. Service was first rate. We'll go back.

Lunch was a real treat. The wrap sandwich was delicious and made of the freshest greens, chicken and harissa. But it is truly the tapas which make this place so very special and unique. Each one prepared and served with the perfection that we got to know at the chef's other restaurant, La Boca in Santa Fe. Wine list is great as is the service. The decor is tasteful and classy and does not try to overshadow the spectacular ambiance of the Hotel lobby which is beautiful. The same superb food can also be had upstairs on the outdoor deck. Looks like a great place for dinner and cocktails and evening entertainment as well. What a great addition to Albuquerque dining! A must!! And a must return!

My wife and I enjoy everything about this restaurant and the historic hotel it is part of. It began life in 1939 as Conrad Hilton's first New Mexican hotel and the recent renovation into The Hotel Andaluz is stunning. Parking is easy - just park in the open lot across the street. The Spanish/Moorish lobby/common area is a sensory experience that reminds one of how unique a historic hotel can really be. We arrived for a 7:00 PM reservation on a Saturday night and were promptly seated. The wait staff were prompt, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu, suggesting appropriate Spanish wines to accompany our tapas selections. The tapas themselves are wonderful - and are sized so that 3 plates, 2 desserts and wine was just right.

I've written a couple of reviews for Mas already--but it's so good I don't mind writing another. It is my favorite restaurant in ABQ. The food is NEVER boring, always extraordinary. Chef Caruso obviously keeps a close eye on the quality of his product, even though he has two other outstanding restaurants in Santa Fe. The essential trick to dining well with tapas as the focus of your meal is having waiters who are capable of spacing the arrival of selections to your table; too many at one time ruins the concept. This is not a problem at Mas, with excellent waiters like Eric, Justin, and Jeff, all intelligent and eager to please; even their backup Vincent is an astrophysicist. Great food, great waiters, great ambiance--it's all there.

My wife and I often venture to dine here. It is why were chose to come here for our wedding anniversary. We have always had an awesome experience. The server, Giuseppe, always awesome. The complete spoiler of the night was the food. It was the first time we were far below pleases with the food. The spice in the food was overwhelming. It made the dinner completely unsatisfactory. The chef must advise if the dish has any spice in the food. The paella was so incredibly hot it destroyed completely the experience. The next wine we venture there it wold be for the server. The food ought to be accompanied by a fire extinguisher. The chef should know better. Food is to be cooked to satisfy the customer not the chef's ego!

Mas has been open only about 9 months but that was sufficient to give birth to what may well be Albuquerque's finest restaurant experience. Chef James Caruso never seems to disappoint with his extraordinary tapas, each with its own distinctive taste. The ambiance is elegant with the feel of a swank NYC restaurant. The service is impeccable--if you get either Eric or Justin, you'll be treated like royalty. The bar serves up drinks named after the famous who were historically connected to the Hotel Andaluz that have as much character as their namesakes. But the star is the food, and you will not be disappointed. My last meal was one of the best I've had in any restaurant.

I have long loved La Boca in Santa Fe. I was really hoping that Mas was going to be the same experience since it's the same chef. It wasn't. Maybe they had a new staff? Maybe they still have not come together as a team? Although we had reservations, we stood at the hostess booth far too long before anyone would recognize us. Our waiter was lethargic and non-attentive, as was most of the staff. We ordered sparkling water... They were OUT. We ordered a bottle of wine... They were OUT. It took them 15 minutes to tell us they were OUT. I ordered a glass of wine. After 15 minutes I had to flag the waiter down by waving my arms. The 3rd time he walked by he finally noticed me. Then I finally got my wine. The rest of the night went about the same.

Only 2 waiters served the entire restaurant so don't expect expedient service. The amounts on each tapas are not well-described in the menu. For example the lamb chops were 2 tiny portions for $16 that could possibly be split by 2 people but not more. The patatas bravas were the most substantial dish fit to be shared by more than 2 people. To fill up however requires that many tapas be ordered so expect to fork out about $50 per person if you hope to leave with a full belly. Don't even bother with dessert. Other than the notable after dinner drinks the 3 items on the menu leave a lot to be desired. There is a lot of potential with a tapas restaurant. I'd rather drive to Santa Fe's El Farol.
