  • "Restaurant is an old building in Downtown LA with deco design, frescos on the wall and beautiful old crown molding and wood throughout. The food was better than average. The drinks were tasty and interesting but on the pricey side. The service was just OK. Our waiter barely checked-in on us. We had to ask several times for our drink order. The bus boy brought only one glass of tepid water to our table and forgot to bring another. We ate and boogied out. Not a place I wanted to hang and people watch or have a conversation. The restaurant is REALLY noisy. They played loud piped in music that made talking/hearing difficult. Probably wont be going here again. But hey there's so many other cool places to try."

  • "This was my first time at Mas Malo. It is housed in what was once a jewelry store and the space is beautiful. We started with an order of guacamole which was excellent. Just enough heat to make it interesting. Our entrees, Coke Carnitas and Blasted Half Chicken were served with either a salad or rice and beans. We opted for the rice and bean, and I was pleased that the beans were not refired. The carnitas were tender and tasty and the sauce on the chicken was yummy. The margaritas were pretty taste too. We did nave an early reservation (prior to a show at the Ace Theater) and the restaurant was filling up when we left. Like many downtown places the beautiful high ceilings make for very noisy spaces."

  • "A group of six of us decided to meet here for lunch. Four of us showed up 10 minutes before our 1:00 reservation, but we were seated immediately, which was appreciated as many places wait until the entire party has arrived before seating. As this was a workday, none of us ordered liquor, but the full bar was definitely enticing. Our server was very attentive and delivered chips, salsa, and beverages. Once the entire group was seated, we ordered and our food was delivered fairly quickly. The server continued to be very attentive throughout the meal. She gladly offered to take leftovers away to pack in to-go containers. Our overall check was much less than our group outing a couple of weeks earlier, and definitely a value for the price."

  • "Organized a birthday celebration at Mas Malo and starting from hostess to the bartender and to our waitress the service was excellent. My girls raved about the food and since we were all Mexican, we were truly surprised to learn how authentic the food really was. I would simply return for the tres leches dessert which was exquisite!"

  • "First off, the lobster enchiladas were incredible!!!! The side portions were substantial. I was stuffed before finishing my plate. The service was okay. Took a while for our food to be served and our drinks as well, but not a biggie."

  • "Restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and has an energetic vibe to the place. Cocktails were delicious, food was fine. Unfortunately the staff could use some real help. My party was seated on lounge chairs instead of a proper dining table, yet it was still early in the evening so over half of the tables were still empty. When I asked if we could be seated at a dining table instead, I was told the restaurant was overbooked. I had made my reservation well in advance so I was confused by this but didn't want to make a fuss of it. After an order of drinks, the host finally came to us and said there was some confusion so we could go ahead and take one of the empty tables around us. No apology was issued."

  • "This place is cool, cool, cool. The food is awesome. The service was fantastic. The atmosphere is gorgeous. I loved it 10x more than the Malo on Sunset even, which has become quite a classic LA restaurant. My only complaint is the noise level. Not much they can do, as the restaurant is in a giant open hall, but it's hecka loud in there. Like REALLY, REALLY loud. If you want a fun night out, yes. If you want quiet and cozy, head to the Malo on Sunset."

  • "The food is always excellent, especially the Kale salad (I ordered mine with chicken), also the drinks are really good! I ordered a white sangria which was amazing- really fruity and sweet! The noise level was a little loud because there was a large party next to us & the room echos - however, it wasnt overall too loud, plus it was a Saturday night so we expected this. We made reservations beforehand because we knew it would be a bit busy, but if you have to wait there's always upstairs @ 7Grand which is worth checking out too!"

  • "This was a return visit for us. Our daughter celebrated her birthday 2 years ago here and requested a repeat. While very good, we all noticed some differences since our last visit... Plating and menu was more traditional than avant guard. We would like to see a return to the avant garde Mexican cuisine."

  • "The freshly made guacamole with pomegranate seeds and chips was awesome! There were four of us. One co worker had hard shelled gr. beef tacos with pickles. Another had pumpkin enchiladas in mole sauce. Another had fish and chips with hanaera sauce. Lastly I had fish tacos. Everything was different but delicious."

  • "Indifferent and unattentive service (we waited 15 minutes for a waiter to appear on a Thurs nite at 6:30), but that was nothing compared to a noise level that was excruciating. We had to yell at each other across our small table to be heard and left after our first round of drinks. If you venture in, don't forget ear plugs. The food was good, but there are plenty of other restaurants that offer good food with attentive service and great ambiance."

  • "The service from the waiter was poor, he was inattentive. He did not give us our options as far as what comes with each plate(what types of beans?) it was the first time at this restaurant for all of us, and there were 8 of us the table. The best service we got was from the busser . very kind and helpful and he packed all of our left overs for us to go. I tipped the busser and not the waiter. I feel the waiter didn't care, because he was already taking out his gratuity from the check at the end. The food was amazing. It took the food took long to come out but it was worth the wait. 2 plates came out with the wrong beans after we told the waiter what beans we wanted specifically."

  • "I heard all the buzz about Mas Malo and was dying to check it out. I was not impressed by the service and food. The service was cold-the waiter had a hipster/too cool for you attitude . The restaurant was half empty and still our table was only checked on once after our food arrived and that was to bring us the check. The food was disappointing. There was no flare. It was ultra basic-something I can find at El Torito. I was not impressed by the experience and will not go back."

  • "This was my husband and my third time at Mas Malo, but our foodie-daughter's first. We'd been raving for months about the food and she was eager to try it. We were not disappointed! The guacamole, garnished with pomegratate arils (a new touch?) was wonderful, as were the freshly cooked, warm tortilla chips. My Carnitas Chile Relleno was exceptional! The Pasilla chile (?) lent the dish its considerable heat, and the flavor of the red sauce on top complimented it perfectly. My husband had his standard Chicken Mole, which is anything but standard! Portions were huge, and we actually brought some home which we enjoyed for brunch yesterday! Our daughter had the fish tacos which she said were excellent. Service could've been better. Delicioso!"

  • "I'll always love the chewy chips and creamy habanero dip, but this last visit was a disappointment. Service was just short of embarrassing - in a nearly empty restaurant, there were huge gaps of time we were never checked on (after being seated, after asking for just 1 minute to decide on our order, after the food delivered, and after we finished eating). A past server myself, I always give the benefit of the doubt.. but when you disappear for 10-15 minutes, come back smelling like cigarettes, and then don't know what certain items on the menu are, it's a bummer."

  • "Mas Malo was an excellent Mexican food experience. The cuisine was creative and delicious. My favorites were the kale salad sprinkled with mixed nuts in every bite and the tempeh minudo. The cheese mole enchiladas and even the cheesy beans & rice were amazing. If all the talk is about the food, you know this is a place to eat!"

  • "After we checked in, the hostess wandered through the restaurant, straightened the flowers on several tables, then wandered back to instruct the other hostess on something that could have waited. Then we were seated. A dozen tables were open, so the delay was completely unnecessary. We ordered chips and cucumber slices. I had to flag down a bus boy to get plates which should have come prior to the order delivery."

  • "I met friends for lunch at Mas Malo. The restaurant was not very busy so as a result it was quiet. Nice drink selection And good variety menu. Loved the Sangria! The water had a cucumber flavor which was unusual but nice. The chips and Salsa were so good we couldn't stop! The main courses were good and the prices were reasonable."

  • "I'll start with this...excellent food. Service, on the other hand, is lacking. The staff is nice, but they are extremely slow. Our drink order took a long time. Chips and salsa didn't make it to our table until our appetizer, which in itself was a long wait. Then, the food came out too quickly while we were working on our appetizer. Even closing the tab took a while. Luckily, we weren't pressed for time, but the long delays were very noticeable. They told us they were down a person in the kitchen. Understandable, but it's usually the most common excuse for poor service. Overcoming those kind of things is what distinguishes a great restaurant from the rest."
