Diner Reviews
  • "I hate to write these reviews because Marx Brother's is a small restaurant and I want to be able to get a reservation ! But, is is outstanding in every way."

  • "As part of our first night out on our first trip to Anchorage, my wife and I had a fantastic dining experience at Marx Brothers Cafe. The inside of this small house if adorable and quaint and the food was as good as any we have been to in our travels across the country -- special recommendation for the Halibut; the mixture of flavors with the parmesan crust was exceptional. And the wine selection to pair any element of your meal is one of the best I've seen. If you are a foodie, this is a must try restaurant in Anchorage"

  • "Been going to this resturant for years and love this. Menu always superb! You gotta try the Ceaser Salad! Enjoy!"

  • "The food and the service were both outstanding. You never felt rushed through a course, or as if someone was hovering either. There is a great sense of a well-established routine amongst the wait staff with everyone always busy but paying attention to the guests’ needs with refills of water, wine, bread, etc. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "This is one of our special occasion restaurants and I still love it, but sometimes it gets a bit loud. Even though it was full on the Wednesday night we were there, we had to raise our voices to hear each other. Maybe we were just unlucky with the two tables around us talking excessively loud, but it ruined the romance a bit. The food and wine was great as usual."

  • "A small house converted into a restaurant with all walls still standing creating small, intimate spaces including a fireplace. Farm to table feel, excellent presentation. prepared to perfection. Fish not overcooked. Staff friendly and conscious of reservation delay gifted us an aperitif. Easy walking distance from downtown Anchorage hotels. Varied menu and extensive wine list. Restroom requires walking one flight of stairs."

  • "We have been eating at Marx Bros. for 30+ years. It has never disappointed. The Alaska fresh ingredients are the best. For special occasions this is our first choice."

  • "Great foodie spot in Anchorage that still pulls it off after all these years! Cesar salad is garlicky-good, if a bit big. Split one...the right amount and you both are garlicked together! Steak had a fabulous demi-glace and lamb was wonderful as well. Didn't care for the scalloped potatoes with truffel oil, but that's minor. Wine recommendation was fantastic. Overall, a very nice meal."

  • "The Caesar was excellent and the best that I have ever had, I enjoyed it being prepared at the table. The guava sorbet was also amazing, however the rockfish was extremely bland and the duck was like eating a rubber chicken, very disappointing after such anticipation."

  • "We celebrated Valentine's late but it was so worth the wait. The meal was stupendous - seafood mousse, Caesar salad, filet mignon and seafood fettucine. To top it off, we took home a bottle of 1971 Madeira. WOW. Thank you again, Marx Brothers for amazing food to go with a special night."

  • "Exceptional service. Got to learn about wine and had some of the best food I've ever eaten. Wonderful experience."

  • "Very nice dinner, great food, romantic getaway. The meal was very good, we especially enjoyed the lobster halibut salmon mouse appetizer."

  • "This is a very good choice for a special occasion, like being with a really hot date who happens to be your wife. The gentleman who prepared our table side Cesar salad was engaging and the salad lived up to its reputation. I had the Tea Smoked Duck and my wife the Alaska Rockfish bundles. Both were very flavorful but on the dry side. The wine list was impressive. We enjoy the 1/2 bottle format. It allows us to have both red and white without having to over order."

  • "With my wife and I were so looking forward to the experience here we heard so much about Vans tableside tossed Caesar salad so I ordered it The waitress dropped off a bowl of Caesar salad and walk away that was the start of things and it kind of went downhill from there we informed the waiter of food allergies which were ignored when the food came when I informed the waiter of the mistake his reply was (acknowledged) later he came back and apologized we ordered drinks from the waitress 30 minutes later no drinks we then told the waiter about the drinks and he promptly brought them to us The potatoes were not cooked and neither were the carrots for a $210 bill I expect a lot more than that needless to say we won't be going back"

  • "i have lived in Anchorage over 32 years and this was my first time dining at Marx Bros Cafe. I regret that now! The food was delicious. We shared the Seafood Mousse appetizer and it was incredible. My King Salmon entree was also cooked to perfection. The desserts are beautiful and spectacular. The restaurant is an Alaskan landmark."

  • "As it has been for years, Marx is the premier Fine Dining restaurant in Anchorage. The Caesar Salad is a must and everything else is terrific. Expensive and worth it."

  • "So on the morning we decided on the Marx Bros. Cafe my partner commented that she had a yen for White King Salmon. Lo and behold there it was on the menu. We shared an order of Alaska oysters which has my favorite of all Anchorage restaurant oyster drizzles: pepper vodka/ pickled ginger sorbet. Several of our favorite wines had been deleted from the wine list but we survived with a nice Groth Chardonnay. Next came the Caesar salad for two always a winner. The entrees were beyond compare. I had rack of lamb and shared bites of the White King. Our server had asked for temps on my lamb AND on the Salmon- a very classy touch. Of course both were cooked as requested. All in all a genuine pleasurable dining experience."

  • "Van's Caesar Salad is legend. I had scallops, my dinner partner had the filet mignon...both fabulous. The Sangiovese (Washington State) was outstanding. Service is personal and prompt. Don't overlook this quaint little house with big spirit and a stunning view."

  • "The Marx Bros Cafe is an intimate restaurant with incredible food. The Cesar salad is much more than delicious: the waitstaff assemble the salad at your table, explaining what they are doing and how the salad is made. The wine list is fantastic and the the waitstaff are friendly, easy going, and professional."

  • "pretty much everything one looks for in a nice restaurant - thoughtful and creative food that includes all the right traditional touches, with top notch service. if you're one for Caesar salad, their tableside preparation is fun, and yields a wonderful rendition of an often overlooked dish. we went into dessert with expectations set very high, and were a bit underwhelmed by the finish, yet had no trouble forgiving this for the rest of the experience."

  • "The food is always superb but it is the service that makes this THE best restaurant in Anchorage."

  • "My wife and I dined at Marx Brothers for an anniversary celebration. The service and food were exemplary. We especially appreciated the steak. Our server was very attentive to our needs throughout the meal. We will most certainly be visiting Marx Brothers again in the future."

  • "Let's talk about the caesar salad first, mainly because that was one of the most unique items about this place! The salad comes out on a cart completely disassembled! The Waiter, or Waitress, literally makes it for you, talking you through what ingredients are in it, how they make it, and generally showing you how their handmade Caesar salad is the best I've ever tasted! The portions of the salad were HUGE! Designed for two people for sure. My wife had Mahi and I had steak! Both dishes were outstanding and the presentation and flavor were through the roof. The cooks did an excellent job! This cozy, little , house-turned-restaurant, is one of the best spots I've been to in the country."

  • "I have been to several small dinning establishments like this before. they are usually run by a chef who loves his work and enjoys interacting with his customers. I was disappointed in that we barely saw our waitress much less any one else. It is a lovely quiet looking house but when you put a couple groups in there at once the atmosphere quickly becomes too loud and difficult to hear across the table. The food was good but I expected a lot more from this restaurant than what they delivered. We went to Simon and Seafords afterwords where even the bar service there was better than we received at Marx Bros."

  • "Marx Bros. is a cut above other Anchorage establishments. This has been true for many years and I would like to thank the owners for their heartfelt commitment. There always is something memorable from a meal there. The other night the "R" petite Syrah was amazing and at the invited recommendation of our host, Cheers to the entire staff for their warmth on a cold Alaska evening."

  • "Service was/is the best in town. Great wait staff although the older lady taking orders was a bit overbearing and always seemed to ask how our food was as I was literally taking a bite of food and looking at her. We ordered the filet and while the sauce was amazing this filet must have been frozen previously because it was chewy and a little tough."

  • "Best restaurant in Anchorage. I have been here a few times and each time it is absolutely perfect. The food, the staff, the overall experience is amazing. If you are planning a special dinner, go nowhere else. Marx Bros is by far the best location for fine dining in the city."

  • "Stellar service and marvelous food made our wedding anniversary celebration evening exceptionally enjoyable. Special requests were accommodated with aplomb in a warm, friendly atmosphere. The wine list is amazingly long, but the servers are happy to help the intimidated navigate it. We chose by the glass in order to enjoy a good variety. A Caesar Salad well worth walking miles for started our dinner. Our food was brilliantly prepared and beautifully presented. We were, and remain, completely impressed."

  • "This is the first review I have ever taken the time to type. This restaurant is a joke. Seated 30 minutes after our reservation time, 45 minutes after our arrival. Not offered a chance to order a drink and barely acknowledged while waiting by the front door as no accommodation. Appetizers were so salty they weren't edible. Main course even worse (at least they removed that charge from the bill). Two other tables also had seating and dining issues with one leaving abruptly. Service was rushed where litterally they would slam the plates down on table next to us to keep the "line moving." So crowded to maximize profits, literally sitting chair to chair - not quaint but bothersome. Not worth the time let alone the money."

  • "This was our first time at the restaurant. We were happy with the attention that the staff provide. The atmosphere is very simple, somewhat like an ordinary living room. The dining experience is casual and slow-paced. While the menu seems short you definitely leave satisfied. The caesar salad is very large, potent with garlic and a bit oily. (I enjoyed it.) The complementary bread good. Main courses were very good. The sorbet is surprisingly good, too! I found myself comparing the restaurant to Simon & Seaforts. The atmosphere was far more simple than Simon's, the menu far shorter, the view not quite as desirable, but the quality of the food was at least as good or better and the attentiveness of staff was better."

  • "Very nice. Most notable for our visit was the excellent service. Servers and hosts worked cohesively, attending to everyone's needs in a friendly and efficient manner. Caesar salad is prepared at tableside and several tables were ready simultaneously. Staff kindly alerted each table of the wait which was fine by us as we had a little more time to talk."
