A word from Maruya
Chefs Masaki Sasaki and Hide Sueyoshi are both Tokyo trained sushi chef. They both subscribed to Tokyo (Edomae) sushi-style. The chefs philosophy is to present their sushi in its simplicity. To acquire such state of simplicity, the chefs must go through meticulous steps in preparing the fish. Quite often, many sushi chefs have now neglected such process. When dining at Maruya, sit at the sushi bar. One would immediately notice the Tokyo style sushi bar. Maruya"s sushi bar stands above the rest and it is most likely the first of its kind in the Bay Area. The glass casing usually found in a sushi place is absent. The sushi bar itself is made out of 7 inches of handcrafted Cyprus wood. The wine selection and sake at Maruya were carefully selected. Most of the wines offered at Maruya are either French or Italian wines to complement the fish. For sake lovers, there is a wide range of sake to choose from dry to full body.

This is food as art. Beautiful, delicate, delicious ... and VERY expensive. It's definitely worth it if fine fish is your thing and you can afford it. Me, I spent over $300 and left hungry.

Had a fabulous time at this restaurant. The sushi is delicious--high quality with some innovative offerings-- and artfully prepared and presented. The staff were patient and accommodating, respectfully entertaining all of our (sometimes naive) questions. The atmosphere is exquisite yet comfortable. Great location on the "other" side of Mission.

Certain items on Omakase menu were delicious, others were okay but not fantastic. The sushi and sashimi were better than the hot foods and salad, imo. I would get the sushi Omakase next time, not the Omakase with hot foods and salad. And then just get lots of sushi after if still hungry.

I was in San Fransisco for one extra night and decided to check out Maruya after reading an article in 7x7 magazine. Since I was alone, I was able to snag a seat last minute. The food was really great. I can say it is at the top of my list in terms of sushi restaurants that I've been to. The service was almost as great as the food. I love it that the wait staff is very attentive without being overbearing. I would strongly recommend to any friend and would go back on my next visit to San Francisco.

My husband and I went there for the first time on Wednesday night. It was highly recommended by a foodie friend. The ambiance, the service, and the pre station are all perfect, as we have learned from most of the Yelp reviews. What surprised us is that they have also improved the fish. That was a perfect dinner.

My experience at maruya blew all other Japanese restaurants away that I've tried in SF. Everything that I had was perfection from the baby squid salad, ankimo and sushi selections. The atmosphere is traditional Japanese, very zen and hushed . Definitely do the masa hide omakase for the full experience

We chose the Omakase menu for all three of us. The fish was fresh but we were all disappointed with the selection. Nothing that stood out, simple nigiri and sashimi that you can get at any good Japanese restaurant. It was definitely not what we had expected. For the $85 omakase, Masa's course, there was no premium fish. No toro, no bellies. A a boiled tomato that tasted like a canned tomato, overcooked salmon (we didn't get the black cod that most people write about). Hardly worth $85.The service was fine but I wouldn't go back again and would not recommend it to anyone that knows what good sushi is like.

Maruya is the best Sushi I've found in San Francisco. It is not quite up to Tokyo quality, but it is very very good. Note that the prices are certainly world class; do not be surprised to spend well over $100 each on Nigiri alone. They do not serve any rolls, so don't even think about that. The fish is very fresh and the presentation is great. There is no soy sauce or wasabi anywhere in sight; the chef seasons it as he chooses, and you have to accept that.

If you have been frustrated with the caliber of Sushi in San Francisco, your days of longing for perfectly cooked and formed rice, perfect fish and authentic presentation are over. Maruya receives my first five star ranking for good reason. The restaurant feels as though you are in a private salon with highly personalize perfect service. The wine list is perfectly suited to menu with a focus on Sake, Burgundies and Champaign.

My husband and I decided to beat the Valentine's Day crowds and went to Maruya on a weeknight. It was probably one of the best decisions we made. We were among the first to arrive at 5:30 when they opened. We were greeted right away and chose the Omakase which offers a variety of sushi/sashimi to die for! The ingredients were fresh and flavorful to the point where we had to close our eyes and just savor the fish. We also tried a very nice bottle of Sake called Bizen Maboroshi. It was the perfect balance between dry and sweet. We also ordered some fatty tuna which was excellent. It is a pricey dinner so I think its better for those special occasions. Overall, great place. Good location too (right off of the 16th street BART station).

We got the $85 omakase - a great path through a whole host of flavors (cooked and raw) all beautifully presented. Tried a few fish I've never had and the 3 item appetizer plate was great. It included a sashimi and passion fruit sauce, tiny baby root veg in with a creamy miso dip, and a house made tofu with umami. All three were incredible. We also had a great Italian dry white wine (can't remember the name) that went perfectly with the meal. There was also a super simple and some how equally flavorful poached tomato in a light fish broth with some kind of chives.

Nothing great, nothing inspired, nothing unique. Sadly, not good. For the $85 omakase, Masa's course, there was no premium fish. No toro, no bellies. A small trio of tastes, then a boiled tomato (in December), small 3 fish tasteless sashimi, good miso black cod, then 8 pieces of so so sushi and a mushroom miso soup. 3 courses had maguro, only 1 of them was decent. I couldn't even get my husband to finish my sushi. I believe all of this was done by the kitchen, not Masa. Hardly worth $85.Advice, do not sit at a table. Beware, they do not read notes on OpenTable so we got stuck at a table. Plus very chilly if you have to sit by windows. The bar might be a different experience with better fish but we will never know for we shall never be back.

Everything was superb about this gem in the mission. The only glitch was that we had to wait for 50 min even with a reservation. The staff kept coming around to apologize for the delay (apparently the previous table was taking much longer to enjoy their dinner than the restaurant expected). We had no problem waiting around sipping the complimentary rose though.

I've been there twice since it opened. I tried their $80 (hot food and sushi) and $40 omakase (just sushi). I have to say the food is up there with Koo and Ichi... if not better. I liked the $40 omakase better because it was simple. No fancy prep and tricked out appetizers. It was all about the fish — served simply without all the fancy pretense -- i.e. Blowfish. There's no tempura or terriyaki anything....so if you like fish in it's purest form. This is a place worth trying.
