Diner Reviews
  • "Marseille is a very nice restaurant. The food is excellent, service and attention to detail is appreciated. Food and wine choices are all good. There is a price fixe meal if you are interested plus they will get you to your show on time."

  • "The food is ok - service nice - good location for theater - but just too noisy - table so close together."

  • "My wife's food was pretty good but I seemed to have chosen poorly. My bruschetta was greasy and harsh. The trout oily and over done. The vegetables were smothered in oil. My wife's crab cake and risotto were good. For this price I expect better. "

  • "As usual, the food was quite good, as was the service. But the noise level was too much - more than I recall from previous visits. The blaring music was a real annoyance - we had to yell across the table to be heard. As a result, we made it a short stay, with just a single course."

  • "The pomegranate mimosa was wonderful! The food was delicious! We will definitely return to this spot our next time in New York."

  • "Restaurant was incredibly noisy. Service was not great. Three dinners were served about 8 minutes before the fourth. Portions were small although food wasn't bad. Overall, Nice Matin is better."

  • "Marseille is a great place to go before a Broadway show. The ambience is spacious, you feel like you're in a French cafe. The food is very good and the service was attentive."

  • "This has the best classic French dishes, the freshest Mediterranean healthy food, and delicious North African selections all in ine restaurant (which is what the city of Marseilke is all about). And the wine list is amazing and totally underpriced compared to other restaurants with similar depth and breadth of wine."

  • "It was hard to find availability, but finally got a table on a Monday night - not so busy, service was wonderful. Daily special of Scallops was delicious! The bouillabaise was wonderful! The Mediterranean salad was a perfect starter. Will definitely go back!"

  • "Great place. Friendly staff. Food is delicious. A little bit of Paris on the west side. This is a return visit and might be my go-to for business lunches as it is relatively quite."

  • "The most beautiful, delicious bang-for-your-buck restaurant in the neighborhood!"

  • "From the food to the ambience to the service, Marseille is consistently wonderful. Their duck is amazing as is the selection of accompaniments that enhance the presentation of the dish. Marseille is my very favorite place to dine in the theater district."

  • "Food was disappointing. Menu was limited to brunch even though we were there at 12 noon and I called ahead and was not told it was a limited menu. Salads were very small. Not impressed. I won't be returning to this place."

  • "Had lunch with a client on a Tuesday. It was real nice that we could actual;y hear ourselves speak ..nice and quiet. The Food wasnt bad. The service was a little slow but they probably saw that we weren't in any rush so that was fine. I'd definitely take clients there for lunch, if a low decibel spot is what you want.. I would assume that the energy picks up in the evenings."

  • "Our party of 3 dined on saturday lunch time; had escargot, chicken sandwich, french toast and mushroom toast. No toast was served with the escargot (had to use the table bread) it was otherwise very enjoyable. No dressing was available for the salad which was served with the sandwish (only lemon offered), the french toast was extremely sweet to the point of being inedible. The mushroom french toast was wonderful. Also the bathroom had flooded and despite my mentioning it to several staff and asking for a towel to place on the floor so we could walk, none was provided, it was quite slippery and many diners commented on it not being safe or sanitary. Coming from outside of the country wifi would have been appreciated to post pictures etc."

  • "Within a block or two of every major theatre but friendly and doesn't feel as touristy as most local places. Because of its consistency, we have brunch there every time we see a matinee. On 3/30/14, the grilled grilled chicken and peppers sandwich, Moroccan omelette, Mediterranean chicken salad and croque madame were each very good as usual, but we would go there just to eat the triple-sigh-inducing cheese infused sour dough bread on the croque."

  • "A very reliable place in the heart of hells kitchen. The food, service and ambiance always make it a pleasure to return. If you haven't been I recommend going."

  • "My daughter and I were in from out of town, and our plane was running late. I called and they couldn't have been nicer about making sure we got a seating later than planned. My daughter loved her escargot and then wanted to eat my seared tuna appetizer she loved it so much. And then again, she liked her pasta with pesto but kept wanting more bites of my (incredibly delicious) duck breast. Wine came quickly for travel-addled mom. Friendly, great food, fun and happening room. I'd be thrilled to go again next time we're in NYC."

  • "I really enjoyed my experience at this restaurant. The food was very good, with a nice wine list. Excellent service. Super quaint decor. Prices very reasonable, comparatively. This is a gem in an otherwise busy, overpriced neighborhood."

  • "I dined in the restaurant Marseille on a very cold Thursday evening in March with my partner. When we entered, we immediately felt the warm & friendly atmosphere - so different from "American" restaurants ! It was noisy, but not overly so. The meal itself was delicious, especially the crème brûlée, served with soft fruit.. We were given adequate time between the courses, which helped us to savour the meal & occasion. However, my partner who has never been to a French restaurant before, remarked on how much smaller the portions are in "European" restaurants ! The cost was slightly more than I would have expected to pay in a similar restaurant in Europe. Overall, we both enjoyed our time here & would return again when in New York City."

  • "Marseille is a good place to go for pre-theatre dining. There is a prix fixe menu as well as a la carte items. The menu and the food are of good bistro quality. This is a very popular restaurant, so the noise level is rather high. The wait staff and the kitchen do a good job of getting you out in plenty of time to make your theatre curtain."

  • "We needed to find a restaurant that would serve after 11pm, Always skeptical about places that advertise in playbill. But we ordered the special - rack of lamb and it was outstanding. Place was quiet and service exceptional. Also had the cheese plate and it was exceptional. Price was a bargain for this high quality. Now that we know about this place we may go to more night time shows rather than the matinees."

  • "We arrived at 5:45 for a 6:15 reservation and were seated promptly. The pre-fixe dinner menu is a good value with a fairly wide selection from the menu. The bread (my litmus test of what's to come) was terrific. A small square dish, with a triangle of butter and the other half filled olive oil, was a nice, thoughtful touch. Servings were generous and the food, mostly standard bistro fare, was reliable and tasty. Service was brisk and efficient - they are adept at moving tables on a busy Saturday evening - but the waiter cheerfully respected our requested to slow the pace. Marseilles has a nice energy and an appealing space. Not the place for a quiet, intimate conversation but not ear-splitting either."

  • "My go-to-restaurant if the theatre is within a few blocks walking distance. One can always depend upon the food to be excellent; service professional and atmosphere exciting."

  • "I'm so glad we went back to Marseilles for dinner on Saturday evening. We were a party of four, and a VERY satisfied party of four! The French onion soup was delicious (deep flavored broth - not salty) as always, and our friends raved about the pate with beets appetizer. At the end eating our entrees, a passerby would not have been able to tell what we had. Yes, we were all members of the clean plate club. of special note, the vegetables were all prepared perfectly. Our server was extremely attentive and a delight. Marseilles is not one of my go-to restaurants. PS The French onion soup was sooo good I may get a container to-go the next time I'm in the neighborhood!"

  • "We needed a place to go pre-theater. We really did not want a big bustling "theater restaurant" but we don't know the Theater District all that well. This one served us very well. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the service was really great."

  • "Service could be more friendly. Granted we went during pre-theater hours and our food came quick, but our server could have been a little more enthusiastic."

  • "...including the attitude from some of the staff. But after a request for a new server who actually paid attention to our table, it was a great evening. The snapper was yummy as was the mushroom tortelloni."

  • "This place has a real Parisian vibe - it's got that cool bistro look, and the food is delicious. we went for pre-matinee lunch and it was perfect! really super good cappuchino and amazing gruyere cheeseburgers and fries. the menu has a lot of selections from salads to soups to steaks - so you will definitely find something you are craving!"

  • "Took my Mom here for her 80th birthday and Marseille did not disappoint. The tuna carpaccio was delicious, especially the light sauce it was marinated in. The French onion soup was outstanding and bursting with flavor! The jumbo lump crabcake was very fresh. The pasta pesto was the big hit of the night! The charred octopus was tender and perfectly flavored. Will definitely recommend to others and return."

  • "Wonderful restaurant --- food and service. Despite our prior reservation, however, we were stuck in the bar area accompanied by thumping bass from the music. .If you go, make sure you sit in the main dining room. The manager was unable to accomodate us."

  • "We had dinner at Marseille for the first time last week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was outstanding, the lighting and decor was lovely, and the staff - from the busboys to the wine steward to the manager - were friendly, accommodating, and utterly professional. Our server Alexandra was delightful too. We actually ordered the least expensive wine, and it was delicious. I was happy we were seated at a booth (my favorite) that was kind of out of the flow, though the people at tables looked like they were having fun being in the midst of the action. Overall, the vibe was great, as was the presentation and creativity of the food, and, all without the pretension of many a fine NY eatery."

  • "We frequent Marseille a lot as we live in the neighborhood.....food is generally ok, nothing special, but ok. Thanksgiving, however, was pretty sad..... We'll stick to a rushed pre-theatre meal or cocktails after the show....."

  • "Marseille is a great pre-theater or post-theater eaterie -- right in the heart of the theater district and on Restaurant Row, it is convenient for many occasions and is walking-distance from Port Authority. I love the French bistro atmosphere and the food is very reasonably priced. The only negative is the noise level. The floor is a very pretty tile but doesn't absorb the noise at all. (My mother, who is over 70, was not happy with the noise.)"

  • "Try Marseilles for delicious pre-theatre dining! The food is wonderful and you will be out in time for your Broadway show. We were not seeing a show that night so once the crowd cleared out, we had a quiet and leisurely experience. We started at the bar as we were early for our reservation. The couple next to us were served their calamari appetizer. I asked what it was and they offered some. We declined. A minute later, the plate was offered to us, Please try some; they are outstanding. We caved and they WERE superb! Once at our table, we ordered an escargot appetizer. Perfection! I enjoyed fantastic, light goat cheese gnocchi. My husband chose the special: filet mignon with mushrooms and shaved truffles. Service: A+"
