Diner Reviews
  • "Food was just ok, not amazing like other reviewers have posted. Much better options exist locally"
    Dined on 8/20/2014
  • "Fantastic selection of food to chose from, even for me as a non- meat eaters. Creative, unusual and delicious. The waiter was brilliant- friendly, helpful and just the right amount of chat when we wanted and 'in the background' when we didn't. (Wish it could remember his name- he's training to be a nurse and has 2 boys if the bosses are reading this!) We are going back again in less than a week to celebrate my sons birthday so I guess that says it all."

  • "There are lots of restaurants in San Juan that claim to have food and wine fit for foodies. Marmalade is one of the few that delivers, and impressively so. We did the 6 course chef's tasting menu, with wine wine pairings, which was done quite well. If you want authentic Puerto Rican food, go to La Casita Blanca. But if you want high concept, innovative food and wine that you could find at the best restaurants on the main land, Marmalade is the way to go."

  • "Food was not bad but menu is overpriced. Wine glasses are very expensive and waiters should show bottle & origin of the product to customers. Must improve quinoa combination because it doesn't fit with Alaska salmon. We liked music sound, decoration and ambient. Personal are always very busy but a restaurant must guaarentee FOOD QUALITY."

  • "A terrific restaurant with excellent food. Get the tasting menu and enjoy your time!"

  • "We came here for a Friday night dinner with our college age kids. Food was delightful and setting and service were excellent. Only drawbacks were that we'd been looking where a Puerto Rican dinner where this was anything but. It was more continental haute cuisine. All excellent, however. If you've spent time in PR, then this is definitely a place worth visiting. If you're on a short trip and want local flavor, you might no ptherwise disappointed here."

  • "The food was both heavenly to eat and to see. The choices were innovative and the presentation was extraordinary . We had the 4 course tasting menu which provided lots of choices and more than enough food. Among the standouts were the lobster risotto , the paella and the fruit cobbler. I've had creme brûlée in some of the best restaurants in NYC but they can't hold a candle to Marmalade. The staff was welcoming and warm and made our anniversary dinner very special. The chef came to every table to check on the food. That personal touch was much appreciated."

  • "It was excellent! Do the tasting menu with wine pairing - don't miss the popcorn shrimp, white bean soup, and lobster risotto - but everything else we had was good too!"
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "Not just the best dinner we've had in PR, or the Caribbean -- one of the best dinners we've ever had. If the chef moved to New York or San Francisco and tripled the price, he'd give Thomas Keller a run for his money. I would rate the food, wine, and service on par with Per Se and ahead of French Laundry. The vegetarians with us had a great experience (the chef is a vegetarian, but the beef and lamb dishes were fabulous as well). Unlike other tasting menus, each diner chooses her dishes, and each has a separate wine pairing -- it makes for a fun sharing experience, and the wine pairings were incredibly well done. Really worth the trip."

  • "I picked this restaurant becuase of it's great yelp reviews and fine-dining profile, but wasn't sure what to expect. Turned out to be the BEST decision of our entire vacation. Dishes I guarantee you have never tried before and excellent wine pairings. My boyfriend and I were seriously thinking about renting the apartment next door...it's that good. Particulars: we did the 5 course (soooo full after, probably could have done with the 4) with the wine pairing. Portions are small but generous and so are the demi pours!! Standouts for us were the white bean soup, the popcorn shrimp, the foie gras, and the tenderloin."

  • "Wonderful on all counts! We thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu with wine pairings. Delicious from appetizer thru dessert! The cocktails were superb as well! We will be back- get here as soon as you can."

  • "Spectacular food and ambiance. Perfect for foodies and people who love a creative and thoughtful choices with a service to match. The tasting menus were interesting and not over done with too many combinations. The wine parings were perfections. This should be on everyone's list to try and then plan to go back. We loved that the Chef/Owner made a point to come out to every table and chat, as well as help serve some of the courses. Really amazing and fun."

  • "Every aspect of the restaurant is wonderful. The best aspect because it is so unique is the food. Combinations of items that are wonderful together that you would never picture together. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and very social. They help make this a unique experience. If you want to enjoy a non-rushed, entertaining evening, this is the place to go. The owner / chief is always available for a conversation, and to understand his ideas enlightens your evening."

  • "It was by far the best food I have ever had. The chief and owner came out to each table and talked with each guest individually. The white bean soup was so phenomenal it left me speechless. The food over all was so delicious there are no words to describe it."

  • "Simply the best meal we have ever had. Food is exquisite, wine pairings are excellent, and the servers and chef are wonderful."

  • "One the best restaurants, I tried in San Juan, but also one of the most expensive, so I would recommend only for special occasions, unless money is not a factor"
    Dined on 8/4/2014
  • "I do not like that a party of 6 has to have the Tasting Menu. The food is great if you like fusion. The Chef is wonderful."

  • "We had a fantastic trip to Puerto Rico, but we both agreed our favorite part of the whole trip was dinner at Marmalade. The service and food was amazing. We did the 4 course tasting menu and wine pairing. It was a lot of food and drink, so definitely be hungry and able to drink before arriving. And starting off your meal with a "Global Warming" cocktail is a must."

  • "I went here with my girls for my bachelorette trip. This was a perfect spot for dinner! We got our own private area with awesome chairs and the staff was so attentive. The menu was full of many options for foodies like me. :) I HIGHLY recommend Marmalade to anyone and everyone."

  • "3rd time at Marmalade and it still leaves me with an enormous "WOW!" factor. This isn't simply just a restaurant. It is a gastronomic destination not to be missed so add it to your sightseeing list. If dining with someone special ... ask for a corner sofa with the rose petals. Relaxed yet perfectly exquisite! Kudos to Chef Peter and his amazing staff!"

  • "Went to Marmalade for our 20th wedding anniversary. They sat us at a lovely corner table spread with rose petals. The food was superb and the service was on point. The head chef came to our table and took his time speaking to us. We could tell his passion for food and great service is top priority. The popcorn shrimp and white bean soup were out of this world. We really enjoyed ourselves. Do yourself a favor and go here!"

  • "Best restauranrt in San Juan. Expensive but woth it. Very attentive staff. Reservation is a must. Not representative of local food."

  • "The food was absolutely amazing. We choose the wine pairing and each wine went very well with the food. All the meals were fantastic and when I go back to San Juan I will definitely go back to the Marmalade."

  • "Outstanding creative menu, fantastic service, great ambiance. Took my wife for her birthday. When I confirmed our reservation I was asked if we were celebrating an occasion, so I told them it was for a birthday. When we arrived we had an amazing table with rose petals all over it. My wife was wished happy birthday by the hostess, 3 different waiters, and the chef who came to our table to ask us how our meal was going, a very nice touch. Food is a subjective thing and I couldn't find fault with any of the dishes that we tried, everything was of high quality, preparation and presentation were top notch. Your going to spend a few bucks but it is well worth the experience."

  • "This is the best food in San Juan and the experience at Marmalade rivaled our trip to the rain forest. We loved it that much."

  • "Spent thirty minutes with the owner and chef learning about his love of food and healthy dining. The popcorn shrimp, sea bass, cauliflower mezze, and banana bread pudding were all Delish. And the waitress was tremendously attentive and helpful. Loved it"

  • "Great dinner! Food & service was excellent! Try the tasting menu!"

  • "1. food is bursting with flavors, I literally almost licked my plate clean. 2. service is over the top. the staff made every effort to obtain soy milk for an after dinner tea (I have severe lactose intolerance). Thanks. 3. the decor is another superlative: sensory overload warning: overdone and flambuoyant. I know it is a matter of visual taste. But 1 and 2 are excellent reasons for a restaurant's being and a 5 star rating."

  • "Black tie dining experience, without the attire. Inspiring and creative menu, with excellent wine pairing selections. The wait staff is superb in their knowledge and service, and executive Chef Peter Schindler personally takes the time to check on your culinary experience. The birthday guest on our table was gluten intolerant and their awareness of both, special occasion and dietary needs, was magnificent. Excellent presentation and timing between courses. You will never regret this unforgettable experience."

  • "Marmalade is a restaurant that would be outstanding anywhere in the world. With an amazingly creative organic-focused menu, everything from the dishes themselves to the drinks to the extraordinary decor (done in 1920's Salon Style of comfort) to the incredibly attentive and focused expert staff was amazing. There is nothing more that can be said other than we would urge everyone to experience it. It is an excellent and unusual dining experience the equal of any anywhere in the world."

  • "You will not be disappointed with any part of the dining at Marmalade! Service is attentive but not intrusive, the food is inventive and delicious, and the wines were paired perfectly. It was a Birthday dinner that will not soon be forgotten!"

  • "I took my travel companion for dinner here while in Puerto Rico. We have both travelled extensively, he has a list of restaurants he visits in NY and I carefully follow the food scene in Portland and we both agree that Marmalade was the best dining experience we've ever had. We both had the much lauded 'tiny white bean soup' which lived up to the hype easily. We did the 5 course tasting with wine pairings and the servings were appropriate so we did not end up feeling that we ate too much. I had the pork cheeks as my main course and he hD the halibut and both dishes were surprising, complexly payed and beautifully presented. I will travel to Puerto Rico for this restaurant again and bring friends!"

  • "We came here for a nice meal on our honeymoon, and were extremely satisfied. We put in our open table why we were going (not calling ahead explicitly) and they had a nice quiet table set out in a more romantic corner with flower petals for the occasion. For food, we each had the four course sampler with wine pairings, and every single item that came out was simply mouth watering. Easily the star of the night (even given that all items were stellar) was the sea bass with coconut emulsion. I'm still not sure how that many flavors were packed in there. Our server was also absolutely wonderful and we never had to wait long for the next course (unless we asked for a few minutes to savor the last dish). Easily one of the best meals I've ever had."

  • "We were on vacation and were told from friends who had been here before that we HAD to eat here, they said they would fly back to PR just to eat at Marmalade again. We went with the 5 course tasting with wine pairing, it was outstanding. We got to each choose our own 4 courses (the 3rd course has to be the signature white bean soup, no complaint with that). Some highlights were the soup of course, the popcorn shrimp, the foie gras was incredible, and the pork cheek entree was splendid. We had the butterscotch bread pudding and caramel corn creme brulee for dessert, both were super tasty, though we were so full by that point that we only really nibbled on them. Absolutely worth the money spent and would recommend going there to anyone."

  • "This dining experience was truly unique - from the atmosphere to the food it was all one of a kind. The 4,5, or 6 course ordering options are definitely the way to go. I chose to have 4 plates and felt that I'd had enough to eat. It was very pricey but worth it if you want to splurge on a great evening."

  • "My boyfriend & I went all out, each ordering the 5 course meal. We had the tiny white bean soup, ceviche, popcorn shrimp, lobster risotto, gnocci, & the black truffle pappardelle for appetizers. Everything was insanely good, w/ the exception of the lobster risotto which I found to be only ok; however, my bf loved it. For my main, I chose the monkfish & my bf chose the salmon special. I really enjoyed the monkfish but I didn't care for the salmon. To me, it lacked any salmon flavor. My bf said he really liked it. For dessert, we got the special blueberry crisp w/ boozy ice cream & the carrot cake. The ice cream had an overwhelming booze flavor but the crisp itself was lovely. We didn't try the carrot cake until the next am - not our taste."

  • "Nice restaurant in charming Old San Juan. Ambience and service were stellar. We did the chef tasting menu and the pasta appetizer and white bean soup were incredible!!!!!!! One of the best soups I have EVER had. The entree (sea bass) was mediocre (my husband had the organic chicken which was good but not great). The ice cream special that night was some sort of vanilla with brandy and truffle oil (it was NOT the well known millionaire's ice cream that is on the regular menu). Anyway, ice cream and truffle oil tastes like a basketball player's feet with cologne sprayed on them (I would imagine, I don't have any ACTUAL experience with this....) Still a cool place with great service. Will go back and try different entrees and desserts!!"
