A word from Marlowe
Marlowe is a market driven neighbourhood bistro housed in a rustic-chic and inviting space. Bright and bold flavors from a three-star chef, and a little family history create an exciting new restaurant concept nestled in San Francisco’s slick SoMa neighborhood. Marlowe was created by restaurateur Anna Weinberg along with a few partners and pals.

Offering a menu of classic bistro favorites with unique and flavorful twists, Marlowe Executive Chef Jennifer Puccio, who earned three stars from the San Francisco Chronicle for her cooking at Cortez, created a mix of snacks, appetizers, mains and sides made up of the kind of food she loves to eat when she’s not working.

I met a friend for dinner who was coming to SF from Palo Alto. We wanted to meet near the CalTrain, so I randomly picked Marlowe. (I had never been there before.) It was a very enjoyable meal. The menu - though limited - had several great choices. We had two sides (brussels and cauliflower) and split a main course. The chicken was quite good, and the sides were tasty (though why add a cheesy layer to cauliflower?). The wine list was nice and we had a terrific chocolate dessert. My only "complaint" was the noise level. It was pretty loud in there. We were able to talk with ease, but it was a pretty amped up amplitude! Nonetheless, we both enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere. Not sure I'd necessarily rush back there, but when in the area again, I'd happily choose Marlowe.

SO happy to see Marlowe in a larger, airy location. The ambiance and vibe is still work-like and very approachable, and the wait staff superb, they know their menu. Glad to see the old favorites still on the menu: Brussel sprout chips, burger, poulet vert. One must-have recommendation if you haven't tried: Spiced Jumbo Gulf Shrimp; the presentation is perky and the cocktail sauce a wonder of savory, spicy and sweet. This is a place where you can unapologetically eat with gusto!

Loved the atmosphere at Marlowe, however everything that I ordered (Pea Pancakes, Polenta, and Chocolate Cake) was just a bit off—the pea pancakes had too much creme fraiche, the polenta needed something acidic, and the chocolate cake had a strange texture.

The best thing about Marlowe is the food. There's really no match - best burger I've had in SF. Aside from food though, everything else has some room for improvement. Service is great, but things just take too long. It's super busy during weekday lunches so a reservation is required to get in. Even after you get in, the food takes a long time to be out. The biggest issue is probably space. They just moved recently from a smaller shop to a bigger one but it's still extremely crunched up. I'm super skinny and still feel really cramped on space (chair to table space, general walking space, etc.). You'd think if they were moving to a new place they'd pick one with sufficient room. For this reason, it doesn't sit too comfortably in general.

Ordered the steak well done, but it was medium-well with pink in the center. Steak arrived cut in half which should have made it easier to see that it had not been cooked to order. Other items we ordered were good. Service was incredible.

I booked a table for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend. They called to confirm the reservation the day before and wished me a happy early birthday, which was very nice. However, that was the only time the birthday was mentioned. We were sat at a small table between two other tables and it was so loud that we eventually stopped trying to talk. And it was a Tuesday, not a weekend. I cannot imagine how loud it must be on the weekend. As for the food, everything was tasty, but portions were pretty small, especially the octopus. The burger was tasty but I didn't find it as outstanding as others have mentioned. Overall good food, but I don't want to pay that much for food and feel like I'm in a loud bar.

I'm on the border or 3 and 4 stars ... The food is tastey, don't get me wrong. The problem is that, for the price, I can get a much better meal else where. I had the burger, which, according to those I know, is one of, if not the best in the city. Eh, I can name 3 burgers that are better (so you know my biases: Umami, Prospect, Roam). I also tasted the pork chop, which looked superb! The chard (or a cousin) accompaniment was bitter, but, you know, it kind of worked given the starchey, BBQ glaze on the meat. To start, the marrow was excellent. Then again, it was my first experience. To help with digestion, the wine was quite good for (a mere) $45 a bottle.

I've been a big fan of Marlowe for years. The burger is special and everything carefully prepared and delicious. I ordered the mushroom soup and the chorizo & shrimp. The mushroom soup was amazing, but small. I split with a friend and we got two very small expresso cups that were about 3/4 filled for $9. The chorizo was too salty and overpowered the shrimp so i would pass on that next time.

I've heard about Marlowe for years. Sad to say, we didn't really like anything except the salad (which is hardly a good test for a kitchen/chef). Everything was overly salted. The "green chicken" could have been fried anything. The pork chop had a ridiculous amount of white fat around tender but tasteless meat. The pumpkin was basically painted on the plate. And the much-hyped burger wasn't even the best I'd eaten this week. (That honor goes to Level III.) The atmosphere wasn't just "energetic" but deafening. My ears are still ringing. If it wasn't for the cheeriness of our server, the evening would have been a complete bust. There was a long line at the door when we left. I am gladly giving up my seat.

We've always loved Marlowe. It was a closeby (even closer now) gem in SOMA. The food is fantastic and the ambiance very nice, even at the bar. We recently went to the new location, which we were excited about because of the additional seating, and were confronted with a wall of noise. I hope the owners can figure a way to mitigate it. The food and service were unchanged--great!

We live next door to the new Marlowe location and while we were sad to see COCO500 go, we are even more excited there is more seating and room at Marlowe! Everything was great, minus the service. Our waitress was miserable for a large part of the service and it was glaringly obvious to us and the table beside us. I've had nothing but good service at the old Marlowe so hoping this is just growing pains.

I went to Marlowe before it moved to this new location. It has kept its intimate charm even with the expansion and the food is as good as ever. We had deviled eggs, polenta, pork chop, black cod, and a few other appetizers. The wine list was reasonable and well composed. Our server gave us a few great suggestions. He was on-point! The only reason I gave a 4 four service is because we were not seated until 10:15 for our 9:45 PM reservation. Also, one of the servers made an inappropriate comment that came off a rude. My guest was upset and after I told my server he did his best to fix the situation.

Marlowe maintains their status as a well run eatery with servers as gracious as they are professional bringing top notch food at this upgraded new locale, having recently moved from their nearby cramped digs on Townsend. The new space is kind of loud with bare floors and walls but the vibe is lively. Smoked Cod Conserva Tartine, Shrimp Roll and Fried Chicken Sando were all winners. Happy to see that they still had the brown Brussels sprout "chips", though disappointed they weren't offering the deviled eggs at lunch. These folks know how and are sure to keep taking over this town.

Turns out this was the first day open in their new location on Brannan St. But the food was as excellent as before, and the service was a bit faster. We had the crispy fried chicken sandwich and the shrimp roll, both fantastic. But to call the noise level "energetic" is a gross understatement--we joked that we needed to get someplace quiet, like AT&T Park. (In fairness, this WAS just before a playoff game, and patrons were more than a little boisterous.)

I understand the new density of the area where this restaurant is located, but the venue is packed with chairs and not comfortable. The starters came fairly soon, but we were served a plate of saltines and butter well after the plates were all removed. This was our signal that dinner would be a bit late and it was. I would suggest they rename this restaurant What? because that word was used a lot by all. My date sat next to me and we could barely hear each other. Maybe the late night crowd is quieter.

We'd been recommended this place by friends & had high expectations. We were a bit disappointed with the service- it was a tad rushed eg we were finishing our desserts and hadn't even finished our wine when the final cheque arrived (hadn't asked for it and there were still plenty of other diners in the restaurant so it's not like they were waiting to shut!) We were planning on ordering another wine but, as they brought the cheque we paid & left. Menu was ok and the food tasty enough. I asked my partner how his burger was and he said he was "a good burger"- nothing more nothing less! My main was good (mushroom polenta) but that was the only vegetarian main on the menu. Good for a quick lively dinner- not an intimate setting

We dined at the new location on Tuesday and could not believe how loud it was in this new space.
