Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful time. It was girls night out and the ambiance, food, location were perfect for us. We were off to see a comedy show after which was in walking distance of the restaurant. Great all around evening"

  • "I frequented this restaurant 30 years ago when I worked on School Street. It had great Italian food back then. I was surprised by the changed decor and menu, but my daughter (chopped salad) and I (mushroom omelet) had delicious meals. The waitstaff was helpful and casually gracious, not stuffy. Having just returned from Paris, this meal was every bit as good as some I had there."

  • "Dinner at Marliave was a great experience. The food was impeccable. Our server, Rena, who was wonderful, made very good suggestions on both the food and beverage menus. We started with oysters that were fresh and delicious. Our entrees, scallops and rabbit respectively were gorgeously arranged and wonderful as well. The ambience in the restaurant was lovely, lowly lit with a wonderful view of the city. The specialty cocktails were so good that after dinner we went to the downstairs bar, in lieu of another place, to have one more nightcap. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "When we asked a hotel attendant for a recommendation she mentioned a few local places and then "but I would go to Marliave." My wife and I wanted a light dinner and so had a few appetizers, which were great. We especially liked the Beef Carpaccio and Beets. The locals seemed to mostly eat the Oysters. We went back with friends the next day for a full dinner, which was also very nice (and noisier as it was late night)."

  • "We found it tucked around a little corner. It's definitely old. It was very dimly lit and almost had a haunted house sort if feel but the tables weren't too crowded, the bar seemed popular, and they had an amazing looking menu. We only enjoyed the half off oysters and some very tasty cocktails. They have a whole speedster menu for cheese. Nice stuff and expensive."

  • "Been going to the Marliave for years. Last two times as prelude to a night at the theater so we're there early, and leaving as the restaurant begins to get busy. Perhaps it's for that reason that service has been more attentive, and that our need to get to the theater is acted upon accordingly ( although this is likely a common reques)t. Food is very good and steaks cooked to order. We like it's 'hideaway' location, and it's shabby chic ambience. It's been in business a good, long while, and there's a reason for that. We'll be back for our next theater outing."

  • "Start by saying this place does have excellent food and is a favorite of mine. That is why scheduled birthday dinner with multiple friends. Have always dined upstairs and really enjoy the ambiance. This night they unfortunately placed our group downstairs near the bar/kitchen. It was very dark and hard to see food/friends. Very loud being next to kitchen and most certainly not nearly as nice as upstairs. When we asked hostess they could not move us. We asked to see manager who promptly stated seating is not guaranteed anywhere in the restaurant. We told her that it was noisy, dark and not what we wanted/expected. She essentially said too bad. We asked if something could be comped she said no way."

  • "This restaurant is one of the nicer options in this part of town. It doesn't break the bank but you still get delicious food and a fun, sophisticated atmosphere. I do NOT recommend bringing children, the family seated next to us had an energetic elementary-school aged child who broke a couple of water glasses and obviously has trouble sitting still. The staff handled the situation admirably, but I think most patrons frequent this restaurant for adult time. Great ambiance, although a bit loud so if hearing is an issue, just know that. I've always had prompt and polite service, they pay attention to the small details that make the difference between a "good" experience and a "I felt taken care of" experience."

  • "Great place, awesome Restaurant Week menu, but needs better lighting downstairs or at the very least a candle at each table."

  • "Went here for restaurant week. Had the escargots for the first course, scallops for the second, and chocolate cake for dessert. The escargots were awesome and authentic. The scallops were cooked perfectly . The chocolate cake was good, but I've had better. However, my friend got the ice cream trio, and you can tell they make their own ice cream. I've never had mint chocolate chip ice cream like that before. The mint tasted so fresh, straight out of the mint leaf... No fake mint taste like most most ice creams. Service and presentation was great as well. Highly recommended!"

  • "one of the best meals i've ever had! definitely get the escargot!"

  • "Fabulous - went for Dine-Out Boston. I think they have the best menu in town for this lunch special. Had the beet salad, shrimp scampi and butterscotch pudding. Not one complaint. The service was terrific and it is such a quaint place. Will be sure to go back!"

  • "I had not been there since the 50s with my grandmother. The prices are high for the quality of food. You can get better in Boston."

  • "We went for restaurant week and the place was packed. Food was great. Server suggested the scallops which we all ordered. She forgot to order my meal and when my companions' meals came out, it took a minute for anyone to acknowledge the error, the waitress did confess that she forgot and my friends where only half way through their meals when my order arrived. Other than that, it was a good meal, the downtairs didn't look special, kind of pub atmosphere, but we sat upstairs and it was nice with lots of windows. Really old building, warped floors and all. Overall, I'd go back."

  • "The good news is the food is good and worthy of praise but the bad news is service is anything but superb. This place has wonderful food and drinks but the waiter is too unenthusiastic to let you know. It took them half an hour to set the table and I don't even know how it could possibly take that long. Moreover our party was not even informed on specials of the day or the items that make the restaurant famous. The restaurant really needs to retrain its employees and let them know what good service means."

  • "The overall experience was stellar. Our server was personable and attentive to our needs, as well as knowledgeable of the menu and suitable wine pairings. The presentation of the food was like an unveiling, making the anticipation and experience even better. We had the mussels and macaroni and cheese for appetizers. I am not sure what pasta was used for the mac and cheese but it reminded us of a cross between ziti and gnocchi. For main course we had the steak frites and beef wellington both cooked perfectly and with the right consistencies. Dessert should not be overlooked as this was the perfect ending to the meal and definitely has me thinking when can I come back again to try more of the menu."

  • "I would highly recommend their cocktails, I loved my flapper with lavender and honey. The rare bits which was gooey and had rich bacon, the mac and cheese was uninspired and one note. The risotto was rich but common, the chicken was good with crispy skin, the ravioli was lackluster, my brother destroyed the scallops so I assume that means it was good, the fish in the fish and chips were good but the chips were a little burnt, and I didn't love the way my trout was prepared but the spinach inside was flavorful. The chocolate cake was great, as was the ice cream. The pudding was overwhelmingly sweet, and the boxed truffles are great to put throw in your bag cause you are mostly full by then."

  • "First and foremost, the food is excellent. Marliave gave a full and varied selection of food items in each category of appetizer, entree, dessert for restaurant week. Service was very good and attentive including a lovely silver domed presentation of the beef wellington. The main dining room was reserved for a private party, so the remaining dining area became crowded and very noisy, but I hope that it is not always this way. I would definitely return to this restaurant and perhaps in warmer weather when the main dining room is open."

  • "Went to Marliave for Restaurant Week...it has a nice ambiance on the 2nd floor. Service was pretty good. The food came in surprisingly generous portions. I've never been to Restaurant Week and have to pack food home because I was so stuffed. The Mac and Cheese was exceptional. The Escargot did not disappoint either. Both were home runs. The entrees (mushroom risotto and steak frites) were good, but not as outstanding as the appetizers. For dessert, the Butterscotch pudding was extremely smooth and decadent. The candied ginger on top was a good accent to the dish. We also got the 3 cheese plate to try. All in all, nice ambiance, good service, great food, exceptional value for a restaurant week plate portion. Two thumbs up!"

  • "This is my 2nd visit to this restaurant. This time is so, so, so much better than my first visit. My server is very courteous and attentive. All my expectation are met. This restaurant provided a pretty decent or big portion of mussels as appetizer and it was very tasty too. The rosemary fries of the streak frites were a bit too salty. My father enjoyed his trout very much. Interested in coming back to try their $1 oysters."

  • "I come for the $1 oysters and keep coming back for the $1 oysters, the great, moderately-priced food (much cheaper than most entrees at nice restaurants -- you can find something great for only $15), and the inventive and delicious cocktails. I love this place -- I consider it a great find."

  • "I hadn't been to Maliave in years, this is Restaurant week in Boston and we decided to go. Maliave is a neighborhood gem, there is nothing not to like here, from the atmosphere, to the service & of course the food All Outstanding We choose escargot for our appetizer and the steak frites & beef wellington for our entree, writing this review makes my mouth water Topping off an already amazing dinner we chose the molten cholocate cake with vanilla bean ice cream and their signature butterscotch pudding with shaved ginger Did I say I want to go back and go back soon ? Don't miss Maliave, simply fantastic in every way Make a reservation on Open Table right now :)"

  • "Three of us had lunch during Dine Out Boston. We each tried Henry's soup, mussels, beet salad as appetizers. All were excellent. We all had steak frites for lunch. Steaks were perfectly cooked. Two of us had the butterscotch pudding with candied ginger on top, which was AH-mazing! The third had the brownie sundae, which was also good. Overall excellent - lots of choices, not just the typical 2-3 per course as with most restaurants. Our server, Chris, was attentive but not bothersome. Water glasses were refilled regularly, and our food came out in a timely manner, but not too rushed per course. The only downside was that we were at a booth in the bar area near the door, and it was really cold every time the door opened."

  • "Large variety of French dishes from gruyere onion soup, escargot, steak etc. Also very big on Italian: gnocchi, pastas, etc. Dishes were all executed very well but not the best I've had. We had the farm cheese Mac and cheese, mussels, steak frites and trout. As said above they were all good but mussels could have had more flavor, sauce on the steak frites could've been fuller and seasoned better, and the fish needed seasoning. I would recommend to go there for wine, cheese and charcuterie with a few appetizers or pastas. Seems more like a pasta place."

  • "I was so excited to make my first restaurant week reservation at Marliave. First course: I ordered truffle mac and cheese. I can tell you the mac and cheese was beyond delicious. Onto the second course: I ordered Cobb salad. It looked like it came from McDonalds….and was sans dressing. When I asked for some dressing it took 10 minutes for a waitress to return with some. Finally the third course: I got the brownie sundae, good lord….How do you mess up a brownie sundae? A scoop of vanilla ice cream with hard pieces of some sort of brownie that looked like it had been sitting in the kitchen since last year’s restaurant week! Overall my experience at Marliave was NOT a good one. I WILL NOT be returning."

  • "We booked the table based on the reviews but were disappointed by our visit to Marliave. Our server seemed to be a bit overwhelmed and our dinner didn't start well when we were told the bar couldn't make Long Island iced teas - not good for a restaurant advertising cocktails and she seems unable to make any recommendations regarding the menu. Overall the food was ok, appetizers better than entres and generally there seemed to more emphasis on large portion size rather than flavor or using quality ingredients. Overall the experience wasn't good and we won't be returning."

  • "the bread, beets, henry's soup,& mixed green salad were excellent. Caesar was horrible, sent it back. Mussels tasted fresh but not seasoned to our liking. Escargot was a miss too. Butterscotch pudding was to die for!!!"
