A word from Mark's American Cuisine
Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.

Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. You'll find diverse styles of food are not intermingled in one dish, but rather American regional ingredients are fashioned in such a manner as to be reminiscent of a single culture's fare. Whether it's Asian or Italian food you crave, Mark's takes you there and back, with taste sensations which echo the authentic food of that land, coupled with Cox's own unrivaled American touch.

  • "Lovely in all respects...the food, the wine, the service, the ambiance."

  • "It has long been a tradition in my family to go out to a nice place for each family member’s birthday. This is the fourth year in a row that I have selected Mark’s and the fourth year in a row I have been blown out of the water by the tasteful five star American Cuisine that Chef Mark Cox prepares in his establishment. Needless to say the food was spectacular, this hot spot is consistent. I will be coming back for many occasions and multiple birthday celebrations to come."

  • "Lovely! I felt like we the the only ones here most of the time! Our waiter took great care of us and was spot on with his suggestions."

  • "Chef tasting menu includes a variety of dishes cooked to perfection, ended with a trio of desserts that are superb."

  • "Recently celebrated our 45 anniversary, perhaps for the 10th time at Mark's...a special experience once again."

  • "We have been dining at Mark's for over 10 years and have never been anything but very very pleased with the menu, service, and ambience. It is the perfect spot for couples, special occassions and events if you love great food and wine ! Always top notch and this anniversary dinner was no exception."

  • "The service is always excellent at Mark's. The oyster appetizer was very memorable and the s'mores dessert was divine."

  • "I've dined in many places all over the country, and the quality of Mark's will match almost any other place I've been. However, Mark's prices are more expensive than even nice places in notably more expensive cities. Drinks were ridiculously priced, the wines were all nearing $100 a bottle for the cheapest, and heaven forbid you order the specials - which were twice the price of any menu entree. There are plenty of other places in Houston I'd rather go to than Mark's - I could get comparable food for half the price. I cannot recommend it."

  • "I took my wife here for the second time and it just gets better the food, the service, everything was just great. We loved how nice our waiter was and well informed of the way the food is prepared. We just love this place."

  • "Food is outstanding. Service is generally good... the waiter was a little condescended, making us feel out of place. The valet parking returned the car with a hideous smell of cheap cologne, which almost ruined the dining experience."

  • "Champaign $23 per glass, one old-tasting Chardonnay $17, salads were good, my bass was salty and tasted precooked, the Bison looked good but I didn't try any, white asparagus 4 stalks for $40 non-descript, the desserts were good but not outstanding I didn't finish mine because it was mostly dough. The decaf coffee on the other hand was the best I've ever had, and it must have been Decaf as it didn't keep me awake all night. The wine list by the glass was limited, only one Chardonnay. The menu was limited as well, but there were loads of specials verbally given in detail so it was hard to keep track of what they were. All of the meals seemed to have Risoto, were they making one big pot and serving it to everyone to cut costs?"

  • "My wife and I visited Mark's to celebrate our first anniversary. Everyone there made certain to recognize the special event, and to make the evening as wonderful as it could be. The food was surpassed only by the service. We enjoyed the entire experience immensely, and will definitely be back!"

  • "The best restaurant in Houston. A truly special place."

  • "We were looking forward to a special evening out but the atmosphere and food were somewhat disappointing. While the building is a converted church, the décor was drab and a little worn. The food was competently prepared but the resulting dishes were unremarkable (no pun intended). We gave the Ahi Tuna entree a mixed score as the tuna was good quality but the plum risotto had an unpleasant after taste that detracted from the dish. The special appetizer of Heirloom Tomatoes (plural as listed on the receipt) had two thin slices surrounded by what appeared to be sliced cherry tomatoes; again, unremarkable considering the $16 price. The lone bright spot was the service – friendly and attentive."

  • "We met friends here on a Friday night. Hostess staff was friendly, and while our waiter was friendly, he spent a ridiculous amount of time going through every minute detail of the ridiculously long list of "specials" and after taking our order, really came around to our table once. Our wine glasses sat nearing empty, our meal was over and he was no where to be found, out plates were cleared and still no waiter. He spent so much time telling every table about the ridiculously long list of specials he didn't 't have enough time to actually attend to his tables. I had the butter fish and it was just ok-not worth $45. The risotto was overly salty, the fava beans were a little too al dente. :( Over priced, poor service, disappointing."

  • "We took my sister and her husband here for their anniversary and tried the tasting menu! It was excellent. The wine pairings were spot on and all of the food was cooked to perfection. My husband and I love Mark's for special occasions such as our anniversary and we can't wait to come back!"

  • "Our meal was very good - as it should have been given the price. Ambiance was great. Waiter (Grayson) was outstanding. Very knowledgeable, personable, and not overbearing. My complaint about this restaurant is the "reminder" call I took on my cell the day before. More and more restaurants, doctors, dentists, etc. feel compelled to call and remind you of an appointment or reservation. Mark's call interrupted an important client meeting. I wonder how the restaurant manager would like it if I called him at a peak time to ask if he "remembered" to properly record my reservation?"

  • "Prices have risen astronomically at this restaurant and I believe they've begun to price themselves out of the fine dining market. A business lunch for 3, no alcohol, appetizers and entrees was close to $200. My heirloom tomato salad appetizer was priced at $16! I think that's just a tad over the top. Service was somewhat spotty despite the restaurant being half full."

  • "Fantastic food. Wait staff is professional. Elegant dining experience, but not pretentious. The presentation and quality of food is among the best my wife and I have experienced. Mark is hands on, world class chef. It is pricey, but the cost of the meal is commensurate with the value received."

  • "Excellent food, well-presented in a beautiful setting. Very expensive, though; much more so than comparable restaurants in Houston"

  • "Everythng was nearly perfect- the food, service, and the setting. the chef's nightly specials continue to amaze. The only glitch of the evening was the sommelier forgt to bring our wine, which was quickly remedied. Mark's continues to be one of the finest restaurants in the city."

We shared an apitizer / a bottle or red wine I had a duck and my boyfriend has a lamb it was really good perfact potion dinner well cooked toasted great well balances sides and finish with cream brûlée. And that was one of our dinner to remember"

  • "I don't think you get enough food for the prices. If a dished is topped with crab, it should be more than 2 spoonfuls."

  • "No way to do justice to this wonderful experience in this small of a space, we live 238 miles from here and plan to drive just to eat here. Staff is fantastic sorry to say I didn't write there names down but took great care of us like we have been customers for years and we will be so worth the drive to Houston. Maybe next time we will try the menu but the off the menu items were "Just Over the Top"."

  • "Was referred to Mark's by a friend and I was extremely pleased. Service excellent, wine list great and the food was outstanding. I am not affluent so I do not go to places like Mark's often but for my next special occasion I will return in a heartbeat."

  • "There are so many specials each night, that would be menu enough, but so hard to decide among the features. Each and every dish was absolutely outstanding from presentation to taste of every bite and element of the dish."

  • "And dinner :-) We had a groupon for the 3 course prix fix lunch. It was amazing! I started with the creamy shrimp poblano soup which was awesome! Briney shrimp with tangy poblano. I knew the desert was going to be their hazelnut confection. So I ordered the pork chop (to save for dinner). It was cooked perfectly. The sides as well and it did make a great late lunch for my husband. I saved room for every bite of their spectacular desert. It was surprisingly quiet at lunch which was good for conversation. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Mark's is our choice for reliable, romantic dining. When we care about ensuring a nice evening, we go here. We simply can't pass on the truffles, so we started with the angel hair pasta and truffles shaved tableside. The heirloom tomatoes with cheese was surprisingly tasty this time with the tomatoes perfectly ripe and different. They served a fish I had not heard of before that was far beyond expectations. It was meaty, with a slightly crispy crust and nice, buttery texture. I could go back as I write this. I had the white chocolate bread pudding. It was perfectly sized to ensure I walked out rather than waddled out. Our waiter was less of a food snob than we sometimes get here and that was appreciated. "

  • "This was my third time here, but this last time was superb. Try the 8 course meal. Everything was freaking delicious...literally. Everything tasted clean and when you leave you won't feel too stuffed that you'll need to be rolled out of there. "

  • "Food was very good, a bit on the exotic side to make it more exciting, and the chef does a great job blending flavors. The restaurant was a bit on the pricey side but given the quality of the food and service, it was worth it. Not a place for casual dining unless you have deep pockets, but well worth dining on special occasions and occasionally for a fine dining night. "

  • "One of the nicest restaurants that I have been at. Terrific food, excellent wine list (although not cheap) and excellent service. Great place for a special occasion. Wonderful overall experience. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Houston, if no the country."

  • "Celebrated two year anniversary with girlfriend; service, wine & food were outstanding. She had the day's special red snapper, I went for the rib-eye out of the menu - both delicious. The sommelier was right on. Expensive place but food & wine were worth every penny. Only exception was the six dollar espresso. The dessert was charged despite the anniversary dinner (Pappas Bros Steakhouse gave it to us for free last year). Mark's biggest competition in my opinion is Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Brasserie Max & Julie and Cafe Rabelais. I like that the place used to be an old church which makes the restaurant appealing on the inside, romantic and unique."

  • "This is the place to go for exceptional food. The preparation is just right with a perfect risotto complementing a grilled fish. And every entree is like that - creative pairings that are interesting but not overdone. The top notch service and sophisticated atmosphere make for a pleasurable experience. Still I go to Mark's for the food and I have never been disappointed. "

  • "The service our waiters provided was outstanding. It took months to get a reservation at Mark's and we had high hopes. We were sat at a table for 2 upstairs that backed up to the waiter's station. We constantly had people congregated behind our table. We had no view of the beautiful restaurant and the noise level was far too high to have a reasonable conversation. There were so many off-menu specials, that it was hard to remember the options. Unfortunately, none of the food was excellent as anticipated - it was average from the ribeye special (both cold and dry) to the rack of lamb (barely warm). I doubt we will return, unless it is for special event. "

  • "Went with my son, we Asian always look younger than our age. After we seated, we found the waiters gave us a strange look and make us feel they are thinking we are too young and can't affort this type of fine dinning. After seated, took them about 10 minutes before bring the menu to us and it doesn't come with wine menu. They just assume we are under age, my son is already 21 years. During the entire meal, they never come and asked how are we doing or need anything else. The food was good but the service is kind of disappointed after paying almost $300 for a dinner for two."

  • "The food is fantastic, the ambiance is spectacular. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They really make you feel welcome and as if they're genuinely glad you're there. It is pricey but as a special occasion once or twice a year its very reasonable. Especially when considering the service and the next level food. My wife and I have been twice and we both thoroughly enjoyed it each time."
