A word from Mark's American Cuisine
Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.

Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. You'll find diverse styles of food are not intermingled in one dish, but rather American regional ingredients are fashioned in such a manner as to be reminiscent of a single culture's fare. Whether it's Asian or Italian food you crave, Mark's takes you there and back, with taste sensations which echo the authentic food of that land, coupled with Cox's own unrivaled American touch.

Chef Mark Cox remains one of the most creative chefs in Houston. I had the lobster and munchkin pumpkin appetizer, and it was wonderful. As was the duck. I have been dining at Mark's for at least 15 years, and I can only remember one mis-step and that was more than 10 years ago. I do think the wine prices are too high. But the food never ceases to impress me. It's definitely a "go-to" spot whenever I have clients in town.

We made the reservation well in advance for our anniversary and specifically requested a nice table for the event. Once we arrived we were usered into the backroom in probably one of the worst tables. After asking they moved us to another table but it already set the tone for a bad night. The food was so so and way overpriced for the portions.

Parents were visiting from out of town and decided to go to Marks before the theatre, food was great. The only down side was that we didn't get to try any of the desserts because we were running out of time. Next time we come, I'll make sure that we have plenty of time to enjoy our meal.

I enjoyed, very much, the dinner we had this past weekend. The selections offered were varied and unique, and prepared with attention to detail. Delicious Linguine & Truffles...a must have...still dreaming about it. The Texas center cut select ribeye melted in my mouth, and the Red Velvet cake we shared for our birthday celebration was tasty and moist. Our server, Alan, was a delight! We must come visit again!

We always return to Marks for a wonderful meal in a romantic atmosphere. It is always pricey and that is a given. This time, however, we were astonished to find the $70 charge for my husband's 10-12 oz. ribeye steak on our bill. Wow! We will go back, but new guests should be prepared for this type of excess.

this was our 3rd time at Mark's and we were celebrating our engagement. Our server was very BUSY with 4 other tables (5 total) and a little aloof. We were getting his attention, but not to the extent we would have liked. Food - was ok. Just ok. My fiance had a lobster = $70 and I had a bison = $60. Neither of us raved about the taste. I do not know if we'll be back.

Enjoyed a wonderful evening. Seated at time of reservation. Room was beautiful and well lit for dinner. Attentive, cheerful service. Food is creative and outstanding . Shared a special pumpkin/lobster appetizer, had the tenderloin steak, the veal chop, turbot, and lamb main couses each accompanied by interesting side dishes. A bit expensive for Houston but worth it. Had lovely wine recommended by server. (Can get discount gift cards at Costco.)

I ordered an off-menu item (lobster/spinach consomme) on the waiters recommendation and it was terrible. This is the first dish we have gotten in Mark's that could turn us against the restaurant. In the past, we have loved the restaurant and ate there quite a few times at lunch and slightly fewer for dinner, but not as keen to go again now.

Had lunch here to celebrate our anniversary. Allen was an excellent waiter. He covered everything a good waiter should cover. So did the busboy (sorry i forgot his name but he was not a very tall man but very nice too.) They both offered to have our pics taken many times. We ordered the turtle soup and the oysters for appetizers. My husband had the mahi mahi (prix fixe lunch) and I had the mashima beef special. They did not disappoint as they were both delicious. I would go back here for birthdays and anniversaries in the future.

The oyster appetizer is the best my wife and I ever had. We've had it many times and it is consistently delicious. If you like oysters and do not get this you are doing yourself a disservice. The truffle pasta appetizer is also great, though limited availability. For meat the 32oz. dry aged rib eye is hard to beat in Houston. The Escobar (white fish) is a great seafood alternative. Wines by the glass are reasonable for this level of restaurant and the selection is decent.

We celebrated our anniversary @ Mark's. The food was fantastic & Marco gave us the best service we've ever had. He made the night fun with his effervescent personality & his delight in the menu options & wine pairings. He obviously loves his job & those he serves. Despite very tempting menu choices & specials, we selected the tasting menu, which I highly recommend. Most items are on the regular menu, but come in smaller portions. The 7 courses come with 2-3 items, so you sample a large variety of dishes. All delicious, but quail & duck ravioli, oxtail, beef tenderloin, and trio of desserts were especially memorable. We enjoyed our meal so much that we purchased several gift cards for family & friends. We will return to Mark's VERY SOON!

They get to enjoy the local Houston flavor as they drive to Mark's and I have yet to have anyone not enjoy the beauty of Marks, as well as, the service and food. It is truly a remarkable experience. Mark's is usually tops but this time the food failed somewhat not in quality but in interest. I asked for a fish entree without garlic (as I always do at Mark's). The waiter said that they may need to make some substitutions and this was fine with me. However, the substitutions were not up to Mark's standards-bland vegetables. I love vegetables and in the past each vegetable was terrific, but this time, very pedestrian. The pistachio ice cream was also a let down. I recently had pistachio gelato in Itay that really tasted of pistachios. Mark's version was your typical overly sweet American pistachio ice cream. I tasted a friend's chocolate dessert and it was incredible. Waiter was great.

We have been trying to get to Mark's literally for years. Every time I'd try to get a reservation for a special occasion, they were booked weeks in advance. We bought a Groupon for a fixed price lunch for 2. We should have been here years ago. It was great- wonderful food. Service (Mario) was absolutely outstanding. It is always refreshing to have an experienced, mature, hospitably server who knows the food and wine and is genuinely interested in maximizing your dining experience (as opposed to the 21 year old in fishnet that looks like they were caught in an explosion between a tattoo parlor and a hardware store...). Mario was most generous and made our experience one of the best! Chef Mark came out to check on us as well.

Mark's is an exceptional fine dining experience. The re-purposed church that houses the restaurant gives the place a real sense of elegance and space. The wait staff is attentive and very knowledgable while the bus staff is plentiful, so service is very good. The angel hair pasta with truffles made a wonderful appetizer for sharing. My tuna entree was perfectly prepared and very flavorful, while the turbot my wife ordered was delicious but not exceptional. We shared the bread pudding with fruits and Grand Marnier, which was a memorable dessert - one where you want to ask for the recipe! Not cheap - a dinner for 2 with wine will run you $200 - $300. But for a romantic dinner, or to impress a friend or date, this is the place.

Great service from the parking attendant, hostess, waiters, manager and bus boys on this Tuesday night. The 3 main entrees were: chicken, duck and in-bone rib-eye. The chicken and duck were excellent. The recommended rib-eye was not a great value. Prepared at medium rare, it was very gristly. Excellent appetizers and desserts. I have been at Mark's several times as a guest of friends and had a great eating experience.
