A word from Mark's American Cuisine
Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.

Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. You'll find diverse styles of food are not intermingled in one dish, but rather American regional ingredients are fashioned in such a manner as to be reminiscent of a single culture's fare. Whether it's Asian or Italian food you crave, Mark's takes you there and back, with taste sensations which echo the authentic food of that land, coupled with Cox's own unrivaled American touch.

Diner Reviews
  • "I've dined at hundreds of fine dining restaurants all over the country and abroad. Mark's has unquestionably been the best dining experience I've ever enjoyed. Every dish was superb, including the dessert and the service was top notch. One dish that stood out for me was the lobster bisque. I've had many lobster bisques in my life and the flavor of the one at Mark's stood head and shoulders above them all. The only other lobster bisque that is in this same category is the one I enjoyed years ago at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Thank you Mark's for this memorable evening!"

  • "From the tiniest drop of sauce to the main entree, there is not one part of marks food that isn't worth savoring! And save room for the house chocolates that will delight and amaze your taste buds!"

  • "Food, atmosphere, service - you get the best of everything at Mark's! This was my first time for lunch and I'm sure it won't be my last."

  • "Service, as usual, was just about as good as it gets. The food is always great, although I'd say that this particular visit the grilled fish (catch of the day lunch entree) was a little under-cooked at the thickest part and, as a result, had a very small bit of a fishy undertone to it. It's amazing how there are always so many components and preparations on a dish, yet the flavors and textures always seem to come together so well."

  • "Mark's is a great American and international cuisine restaurant. The Foie Gras duo was great, and the seafood special with lobster was excellent."

  • "My wife and I went to Mark's for lunch. Normally we've been in the evening and usually for a special occasion which is always great, but lunch was an unexpected surprise. It wasn't crowded or noisy. The food was excellent and so was the service. We tried a new cocktail and the bartender made it extra special for us with a cognac soaked cherry in the glass. The chef was visible periodically in the front of the house and obviously takes pride in his creations. There were several off menu items and the appetizer we ordered was great. I had the duck as an entree - outstanding. My wife had the prix fixe menu which she also enjoyed both the selection and taste of the food. Special attention and atmosphere at lunch made for a great meal!"

  • "We have been to Mark's before and have never been disappointed. It is pricey but well worth the cost, so we reserve it for the best occasions. Portions are reasonable, and each dish has an amazing complexity of subtle favors that should be savored and not overlooked. We have selected from both the menu and the specials and have been very pleased with every dish."

  • "ordered the fois gras as i have in the past; only one tiny morsel of fresh fois gras. this was disappointing for $24.00. i have ordered it before and had 2 pieces -still expensive, but par for the course. 1 tiny morsel was insufficient. everything else very good. the pate fois gras was not particularly good."

  • "Great wait staff, food could have been hotter . Biggest complaint is that the excellent waiter rattled of off all the wonderful dishes that we're not on the regular menu until my head was spinning .... I would like to see all those wonderful dishes in writing as part of menu so I can choose more wisely ....."

  • "Mario is officially the best wait staff ever in my many years of dining. He made our evening extra enjoyable. He was just as excited about the menu as our group was. There were 8 in our party, we all tried something different and each dish was just as delicious as the next. It was my birthday I chose this restaurant due to all my friends raves about it. I enjoyed the foie gras and a glass of Louis Vlll. Amazing evening, talent and experience."

  • "Mark's has been our "go-to" restaurant when we visit Houston, but this visit it was disappointing. The ravioli were actually served cold. While the waiter was apologetic and took it off our bill, it was not up to standard. Our main courses (duck, soft shell crab) were "fine," but hardly memorable. And the dessert, which our waiter described as "amazing," was quite pedestrian. We are likely to search for a new home for our visits to Houston."

  • "It has long been a tradition in my family to go out to a nice place for each family member’s birthday. This is the fourth year in a row that I have selected Mark’s and the fourth year in a row I have been blown out of the water by the tasteful five star American Cuisine that Chef Mark Cox prepares in his establishment. Needless to say the food was spectacular, this hot spot is consistent. I will be coming back for many occasions and multiple birthday celebrations to come."

It is the perfect spot for couples, special occassions and events if you love great food and wine ! Always top notch and this anniversary dinner was no exception."

  • "I took my wife here for the second time and it just gets better the food, the service, everything was just great. We loved how nice our waiter was and well informed of the way the food is prepared. We just love this place."

  • "Food is outstanding. Service is generally good... the waiter was a little condescended, making us feel out of place. The valet parking returned the car with a hideous smell of cheap cologne, which almost ruined the dining experience."

  • "Champaign $23 per glass, one old-tasting Chardonnay $17, salads were good, my bass was salty and tasted precooked, the Bison looked good but I didn't try any, white asparagus 4 stalks for $40 non-descript, the desserts were good but not outstanding I didn't finish mine because it was mostly dough. The decaf coffee on the other hand was the best I've ever had, and it must have been Decaf as it didn't keep me awake all night. The wine list by the glass was limited, only one Chardonnay. The menu was limited as well, but there were loads of specials verbally given in detail so it was hard to keep track of what they were. All of the meals seemed to have Risoto, were they making one big pot and serving it to everyone to cut costs?"

  • "My wife and I visited Mark's to celebrate our first anniversary. Everyone there made certain to recognize the special event, and to make the evening as wonderful as it could be. The food was surpassed only by the service. We enjoyed the entire experience immensely, and will definitely be back!"

  • "Fantastic food. Wait staff is professional. Elegant dining experience, but not pretentious. The presentation and quality of food is among the best my wife and I have experienced. Mark is hands on, world class chef. It is pricey, but the cost of the meal is commensurate with the value received."

  • "Our meal was very good - as it should have been given the price. Ambiance was great. Waiter (Grayson) was outstanding. Very knowledgeable, personable, and not overbearing. My complaint about this restaurant is the "reminder" call I took on my cell the day before. More and more restaurants, doctors, dentists, etc. feel compelled to call and remind you of an appointment or reservation. Mark's call interrupted an important client meeting. I wonder how the restaurant manager would like it if I called him at a peak time to ask if he "remembered" to properly record my reservation?"

  • "Everythng was nearly perfect- the food, service, and the setting. the chef's nightly specials continue to amaze. The only glitch of the evening was the sommelier forgt to bring our wine, which was quickly remedied. Mark's continues to be one of the finest restaurants in the city."

  • "Excellent food, well-presented in a beautiful setting. Very expensive, though; much more so than comparable restaurants in Houston"
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "I don't think you get enough food for the prices. If a dished is topped with crab, it should be more than 2 spoonfuls."

  • "I've dined in many places all over the country, and the quality of Mark's will match almost any other place I've been. However, Mark's prices are more expensive than even nice places in notably more expensive cities. Drinks were ridiculously priced, the wines were all nearing $100 a bottle for the cheapest, and heaven forbid you order the specials - which were twice the price of any menu entree. There are plenty of other places in Houston I'd rather go to than Mark's - I could get comparable food for half the price. I cannot recommend it."

  • "We met friends here on a Friday night. Hostess staff was friendly, and while our waiter was friendly, he spent a ridiculous amount of time going through every minute detail of the ridiculously long list of "specials" and after taking our order, really came around to our table once. Our wine glasses sat nearing empty, our meal was over and he was no where to be found, out plates were cleared and still no waiter. He spent so much time telling every table about the ridiculously long list of specials he didn't 't have enough time to actually attend to his tables. I had the butter fish and it was just ok-not worth $45. The risotto was overly salty, the fava beans were a little too al dente. :( Over priced, poor service, disappointing."

  • "We took my sister and her husband here for their anniversary and tried the tasting menu! It was excellent. The wine pairings were spot on and all of the food was cooked to perfection. My husband and I love Mark's for special occasions such as our anniversary and we can't wait to come back!"

  • "Prices have risen astronomically at this restaurant and I believe they've begun to price themselves out of the fine dining market. A business lunch for 3, no alcohol, appetizers and entrees was close to $200. My heirloom tomato salad appetizer was priced at $16! I think that's just a tad over the top. Service was somewhat spotty despite the restaurant being half full."

  • "Was referred to Mark's by a friend and I was extremely pleased. Service excellent, wine list great and the food was outstanding. I am not affluent so I do not go to places like Mark's often but for my next special occasion I will return in a heartbeat."

  • "There are so many specials each night, that would be menu enough, but so hard to decide among the features. Each and every dish was absolutely outstanding from presentation to taste of every bite and element of the dish."
