A word from Mark's American Cuisine
Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.

Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. You'll find diverse styles of food are not intermingled in one dish, but rather American regional ingredients are fashioned in such a manner as to be reminiscent of a single culture's fare. Whether it's Asian or Italian food you crave, Mark's takes you there and back, with taste sensations which echo the authentic food of that land, coupled with Cox's own unrivaled American touch.

Mark's is an exceptional fine dining experience. The re-purposed church that houses the restaurant gives the place a real sense of elegance and space. The wait staff is attentive and very knowledgable while the bus staff is plentiful, so service is very good. The angel hair pasta with truffles made a wonderful appetizer for sharing. My tuna entree was perfectly prepared and very flavorful, while the turbot my wife ordered was delicious but not exceptional. We shared the bread pudding with fruits and Grand Marnier, which was a memorable dessert - one where you want to ask for the recipe! Not cheap - a dinner for 2 with wine will run you $200 - $300. But for a romantic dinner, or to impress a friend or date, this is the place.

I brought a date for a birthday celebration. It is honestly the best fine dinning restaurant that I have ever been to. The setting of a remodeled church is unique, as well as, beautiful and romantic. But the menu items were just as unique and well thought out. You will not be disappointed.

Great service from the parking attendant, hostess, waiters, manager and bus boys on this Tuesday night. The 3 main entrees were: chicken, duck and in-bone rib-eye. The chicken and duck were excellent. The recommended rib-eye was not a great value. Prepared at medium rare, it was very gristly. Excellent appetizers and desserts. I have been at Mark's several times as a guest of friends and had a great eating experience.

Mark's is consistently excellent. The noise was a little more than usual as we had some Aussies sit next to us that were competing for the podium. The food and service were so good the noise hardly dampened our experience. Not much a restaurant can do about it.

Mark's is a reference in Houston for longevity and quality. Food is always unique. The wine list is top level; the By The Glass price however is a bit high. I wish this wasn't jus a Special Occasion place and meals were a little more accessible on certain days of the week. But truthfully, it's a pretty cool place that may deserve the premium price.

Service was leisurely, but attentive. [I expected this as all the dishes are prepared to order.] The specials were outstanding, especially the branzino. We split that entree and added soft shell crab. Appetizers and desserts were very good, as well. The tab was a bit pricey for 'everyday', but appropriate for a 'special occasion'. We will return.

after we were seated we order our drinks, the waiter told us about the specials for dinner he had for the evening & as he told us they all sounded good, they really need to show the prices of all the special on the menu because if you don't know you really will be shock when you get you bill, the prices for the special menu was really HIGH, me & my wife had Lobster MC that cost me $137.90 for 2 dinners which seam to be less that 1 LB.& my daughter had 12 OZ Steak Spinalis that cost me $144.00 which had no flavor to it & slightly over cooked, I went with a party of 4 and my bill was $478.14 with out the tip & we had no deserts. I don't mind paying a higher price for fine dining but it really has to taste good at lease

We were celebrating a birthday, and had to pick from our top favorite spots in Houston. Mark's never fails to impress. It was a wonderful evening of wine, food and great service. The presentation of the food over the top, and the flavors were fantastic. The fact that the restaurant in inside of an old church adds to the fun.

Mark's is one of my favorite restaurants. The cuisine produced by the kitchen has never disappointed. I gave the experience 4 stars because of my admitted sensitivity to the fact that the chef came out of the kitchen twice, but never acknowledged more than 2 tables of diners in the restaurant one of which was immediately adjacent to ours. It would have been nice to get a 'head nod' that we existed, especially since I indicated on the reservation and to the wait staff that one member of our table was dining there for the very first time.

Munchkin Pumpkins made their seasonal debut this past weekend--which was great news for me as I have been a big fan of these lobster stuffed goodies over the years that they have appeared on Mark's menu. He was also serving barramundi on this evening--my favorite of all his fish specials. Others in our group enjoyed a dungeoness crab bisque, a mixed seafood appetizer, a sesame crusted ahi tuna and chilean bass. Everything was delicious. And for the birthday splurge, I went with the nutella filled donut holes. YUM. As someone else's guest, I remain perplexed by the absence of reasonable price points on the extensive wine list. On the 16 page list, there are 4 reds and 22 whites [though no chardonnays] under $60.

Delicious food and extensive Wine list but everything there is way over-priced. Nothing special. We had been there before, but it had been a while so thought we would try it again. Don't think we will be going back as there are so many other good restaurants in the city of Houston that just aren't that expensive and worth it.

We chose Heirloom tomatoes and the duck ravioli as appetizers, Caesar Salad and Pear Salad, Lobster special and the Black Bass special. All I can say is WOW! Mark's has been a great restaurant for many years, and is still among the top in Houston (at least in our view). Nevertheless, with so many great new establishments in the City it is not as compelling as it once was. Prices are pushing to the high side relative to competition, and while creativity of the kitchen is good -- it is not measurably ahead, vs. where it once was. We will be back, but not at the frequency we used to visit Mark's.

A great restaurant with a rare setting in a former church - very nicely done. I could have made a meal with just combinations of the appetisers - pasta with truffles was divine, and the seafood sampler was great. We indicated on our reservation that it was a wedding anniversary, yet were know acknowledged by anyone there, nor were we put at a nice table. Instead, we were put in the middle of the dining room next to a large party of 6 that included children. Food was good, but did not feel the price point for each entree was worth it ($54 for lamb and $49 for fish) Draft beer was $9 too, seems a bit outlandish when the restaurant down the street sells it for $4. Mark up not worth the hype.

Came here for an anniversary dinner. I noted in my reservation and to the hostess that it's our first time so I'd like the full experience. I know I can be picky, but we were at a table closest to a kitchen area so the door was CONSTANTLY opening and closing right next to us. High traffic area, that's not my definition of romantic ambiance. Our waiter however, Anthony, was superb! Excellent service, explaining everything we ate down to the bread. I ordered a recommended Asian beef, cooked medium, it was very red but didn't want to send back and very bland to me. I enjoyed the bread with caramelized onions and scalloped potatoes more. Overall the service won over the food, left feeling that the hype about the food was just hype.

The food was way overpriced for the quality and amount. Salmon and sides were lukewarm. Beef tenderloin and bonemarrow potatoe portions were way too small for price. Pork chop was the best thing at our table. Got stuffed into a tiny outdated 5 top room upstairs with no ambience. Way better choices elsewhere in Houston for better prices and quality.
