A word from Mark's American Cuisine
Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.

Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. You'll find diverse styles of food are not intermingled in one dish, but rather American regional ingredients are fashioned in such a manner as to be reminiscent of a single culture's fare. Whether it's Asian or Italian food you crave, Mark's takes you there and back, with taste sensations which echo the authentic food of that land, coupled with Cox's own unrivaled American touch.

Diner Reviews
  • "The Houston food scene has a lot of bright spots. While the new hot spots often get the most attention, don't overlook the well established excellence at Mark's. They continue to deliver consistently awesome food in an excellent venue, the staff is fantastic - the whole operation is truly top-notch."

  • "reservation - 6:15 out by 7:15 - fried soft shell crab was a little hard - but, always good"

  • "Ambience is the only thing ever lacking there. The menu, food presentation, meal and service were impeccable."

  • "Once again, excellent dinner at mark's. Everything was superbly flavorful. The specials were outstanding."

  • "We went for a friend's birthday on a Friday night. Tuna entree was just so so...but berry crisp was great. Server nice but busy...did not come around as much as I would have liked."

  • "Food was beyond fantastic. I was a bit disappointed that the wine ordered was not available and I was not told, nor offered an explanation. I'd expect the waitress would inform the change and not just bring another bottle. Small detail."

  • "A great restaurant with a rare setting in a former church - very nicely done. I could have made a meal with just combinations of the appetisers - pasta with truffles was divine, and the seafood sampler was great. The softshell crab was excellent - tasty, not too salty, and not greasy. The service was attentive but not intrusive. Very special dinner!"

  • "We indicated on our reservation that it was a wedding anniversary, yet were know acknowledged by anyone there, nor were we put at a nice table. Instead, we were put in the middle of the dining room next to a large party of 6 that included children. Food was good, but did not feel the price point for each entree was worth it ($54 for lamb and $49 for fish) Draft beer was $9 too, seems a bit outlandish when the restaurant down the street sells it for $4. Mark up not worth the hype."

  • "Mark's continues its outstanding service and excellent food options. Our waiter, Mario, was simply fantastic. Excellent special occasion location however we noticed several men in jeans and tennis shoes but for the most part, gentlemen wore jackets."

  • "Came here for an anniversary dinner. I noted in my reservation and to the hostess that it's our first time so I'd like the full experience. I know I can be picky, but we were at a table closest to a kitchen area so the door was CONSTANTLY opening and closing right next to us. High traffic area, that's not my definition of romantic ambiance. Our waiter however, Anthony, was superb! Excellent service, explaining everything we ate down to the bread. I ordered a recommended Asian beef, cooked medium, it was very red but didn't want to send back and very bland to me. I enjoyed the bread with caramelized onions and scalloped potatoes more. Overall the service won over the food, left feeling that the hype about the food was just hype."

  • "Every course of our meal was a culinary experience. Great flavors in every dish. Our waiter was exquisite. Though the place was a bit loud, it was never loud enough to interrupt our meal. Overall great night."

  • "The food was way overpriced for the quality and amount. Salmon and sides were lukewarm. Beef tenderloin and bonemarrow potatoe portions were way too small for price. Pork chop was the best thing at our table. Got stuffed into a tiny outdated 5 top room upstairs with no ambience. Way better choices elsewhere in Houston for better prices and quality."

  • "It was for a special occasion, I specified my husband's birthday on my online reservation and there was a candle and a note on his dessert! Food is good, the room is beautiful and the staff is really nice."

  • "The location is breathtaking. Our server was not only knowledgeable, but inspiring. His exuberant description of the food had our head spinning as to which delicious item to choose first. His recommendations are right on and being adventurous will not be a disappointment at Mark's. I had a watermelon and mango chilled soup with lump crab for an appetizer and the herb crusted ribeye with shingled potatoes for my main course. Every bite was divine. Thanks for creating a dining experience."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary here and as always- loved every bite! Chef Mark's nightly specials are like miniature pieces of edible art. Amazing!"

  • "Excellent food, presentation and quality are equally amazing. Ability to maintain the food quality after all these years are not easy. So many restaurants come and go in Houston. The only draw back is the price. It is high but borderline excessive, especially relative to other restaurants in the area. Hope that won't push away customers and eventually lead to the downfall of the restaurant since it has happened to several restaurants in the Houston area."

  • "From end to end our anniversary dinner at Mark's was the best meal that I have ever eaten. Every bite was so full of taste that I did not even want to swallow, but instead to savor the flavors for as long as possible."

  • "It seems that the waiter wanted us out. He refilled the tea twice, removed the water and bumped the table twice. We were entertaining friends. We will not go again. With those prices, we should not have felt that we were being rushed out!"

  • "In a family of foodies and would-be chefs I have had so many memorable meals. I was unprepared for the taste, presentation, preparation of the duck and lamb dinners we enjoyed on July 21st. A delightful evening I hope to enjoy again often."

  • "I've dined at hundreds of fine dining restaurants all over the country and abroad. Mark's has unquestionably been the best dining experience I've ever enjoyed. Every dish was superb, including the dessert and the service was top notch. One dish that stood out for me was the lobster bisque. I've had many lobster bisques in my life and the flavor of the one at Mark's stood head and shoulders above them all. The only other lobster bisque that is in this same category is the one I enjoyed years ago at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Thank you Mark's for this memorable evening!"

  • "Food, atmosphere, service - you get the best of everything at Mark's! This was my first time for lunch and I'm sure it won't be my last."

  • "Service, as usual, was just about as good as it gets. The food is always great, although I'd say that this particular visit the grilled fish (catch of the day lunch entree) was a little under-cooked at the thickest part and, as a result, had a very small bit of a fishy undertone to it. It's amazing how there are always so many components and preparations on a dish, yet the flavors and textures always seem to come together so well."

  • "Mark's is a great American and international cuisine restaurant. The Foie Gras duo was great, and the seafood special with lobster was excellent."

  • "My wife and I went to Mark's for lunch. Normally we've been in the evening and usually for a special occasion which is always great, but lunch was an unexpected surprise. It wasn't crowded or noisy. The food was excellent and so was the service. We tried a new cocktail and the bartender made it extra special for us with a cognac soaked cherry in the glass. The chef was visible periodically in the front of the house and obviously takes pride in his creations. There were several off menu items and the appetizer we ordered was great. I had the duck as an entree - outstanding. My wife had the prix fixe menu which she also enjoyed both the selection and taste of the food. Special attention and atmosphere at lunch made for a great meal!"

  • "We have been to Mark's before and have never been disappointed. It is pricey but well worth the cost, so we reserve it for the best occasions. Portions are reasonable, and each dish has an amazing complexity of subtle favors that should be savored and not overlooked. We have selected from both the menu and the specials and have been very pleased with every dish."

  • "ordered the fois gras as i have in the past; only one tiny morsel of fresh fois gras. this was disappointing for $24.00. i have ordered it before and had 2 pieces -still expensive, but par for the course. 1 tiny morsel was insufficient. everything else very good. the pate fois gras was not particularly good."

  • "Great wait staff, food could have been hotter . Biggest complaint is that the excellent waiter rattled of off all the wonderful dishes that we're not on the regular menu until my head was spinning .... I would like to see all those wonderful dishes in writing as part of menu so I can choose more wisely ....."

  • "Mario is officially the best wait staff ever in my many years of dining. He made our evening extra enjoyable. He was just as excited about the menu as our group was. There were 8 in our party, we all tried something different and each dish was just as delicious as the next. It was my birthday I chose this restaurant due to all my friends raves about it. I enjoyed the foie gras and a glass of Louis Vlll. Amazing evening, talent and experience."

  • "Mark's has been our "go-to" restaurant when we visit Houston, but this visit it was disappointing. The ravioli were actually served cold. While the waiter was apologetic and took it off our bill, it was not up to standard. Our main courses (duck, soft shell crab) were "fine," but hardly memorable. And the dessert, which our waiter described as "amazing," was quite pedestrian. We are likely to search for a new home for our visits to Houston."

  • "It has long been a tradition in my family to go out to a nice place for each family member’s birthday. This is the fourth year in a row that I have selected Mark’s and the fourth year in a row I have been blown out of the water by the tasteful five star American Cuisine that Chef Mark Cox prepares in his establishment. Needless to say the food was spectacular, this hot spot is consistent. I will be coming back for many occasions and multiple birthday celebrations to come."
