Diner Reviews
  • "This is a well kept secret in the South Street Seaport. The dining room is quiet and the tables are not close. The steaks are thick and done to your perfection. Not a large wine list, but our server was well versed on the offered selections. Service is quiet and unobtrusive. I had the filet mignon and lobster tail. The filet was 12 ounces and came as I requested, charred on the outside and rare inside. The steamed lobster was a good size as well. The sides were large enough to feed 3 people and our waiter advised this so we did not over order. Recommended."

  • "I had my Birthday dinner at MarkJoseph Steakhouse with a large party, which the staff was beyond accommodating to. Luckily my Birthday coincided with the last day of restaurant week and we were able to partake in the special menu. The freshly baked rolls, sizzling bacon and steak was amazing. I was told the Ceasar salad, clams and salmon were as well. The mandatory sides of creamed spinach (which was a bit sweet and waterlogged) and mashed weren't great, and the brownie in the sundae was rock hard for us all, but we had an incredible waitress and waitstaff (they sang Happy Birthday - so sweet), great dinner and an wonderful time and experience!!! Thank you all for making my Birthday wonderful!!! Can't wait to return for some more steak!!!"

  • "I chose MarkJoseph based on their menu and close proximity to my job. Best last minute choice I made regarding food. My steak was flavorful and cooked just right I didn't want my meal to be over. The waiter kept my guest and I laughing while we waited for our food."

  • "We booked a table for two for the final day of Restaurant Week 2014. The menu offerings were varied for restaurant week, which is one of the primary reasons for selecting this restaurant. We arrived earlier than anticipated, but were seated anyway. Lovely atmosphere, and tables were filled with diners well past 2:00 p.m. Our entree choice was the 14 oz Sirloin (bone in). Caesar Salad was delicious with flavorful parmesan cheese shavings. The steak arrived on a sizzling platter, sliced before arriving at the table, and was transferred to our plates. The remaining sauce was spooned over the steak. It was absolutely the best steak I've ever had. Dessert was also delicious. Definitely a great place!"

  • "We had lunch there during Restaurant Week and thought the steaks were very good as were the appetizer and desserts....A good find in an area without a lot of good restaurants..."

  • "I and my friend had a lunch on Friday. We skipped appetizer and went straight into main. We shared filletmignon and lamb-chop with couple of sides and all tasted sooooo good! Service was also prompt and superb. Will be back the next time we visit NYC."

  • "I came here with my coworkers during restaurant week. The service was great. The waiter was attentive without being distributive. The menu selection was great, there was definitely something for everyone. I ordered the filet mignon for the extra charge. My food was fantastic, and my steak was cook perfectly. It was a great lunch and I would most definitely go back!"

  • "Our server was excellent! The restaurant offers an upscale dining experience, yet maintains a humble environment (as opposed to the haughty atmospheres of other equivalent steakhouses). All the staff had a down-to-earth demeanor which was very much appreciated."

  • "Went for restaurant week and was very welcomed...food came extremely fast and tasted amazing. Server was very helpful and managers came often to make sure everything was going well. Will definitely be back!"

  • "This is a hidden gem with a super friendly staff. Ingrid was our waitress, she was on key with everything! We ordered baked clams, caesar salad & canadian bacon for starters. The canadian bacon was good, but a little to salty. It was good to try, but I'd prefer the baked clams before the bacon. The filet mignon was amazing! The steak was cooked exactly as requested, it was juicy & melted in your mouth. The steaksauce, side of mashed potatoes & cream spinach complimented the steak perfectly. We then ordered the brownie sundae & choc. chip ice cream. This entire meal hit the spot! The only con is the decor could be updated. For a restaurant with great service and food, I think an upgraded decor would complete the whole top notch package."

  • "I have been going to Marc Joseph for years. THe wait staff are professional and knowledgeable. One waiter I can speak about is Mike. When we go back its like visiting family. The steak is just as good or better than other steak house that you may go to and have to wait and hour before you sit (and thats with a reservation). Highly recommend to all that want great ambieance, great steak and great service starting from the minute you walk in."

  • "I tried baked clam and filet mignon, both tasted pretty good. Baked clam was a heavy dish with a lot of oil and crumbs. Filet mignon was cooked evenly. A lot of people around our table ordered sirloin. The way they serve sirloins is similar to peter luger - serving "glossy" cut up steak to your plate from a big plate where they cut the steak and a lot of "juice" (melted beef fat, i guess). Even though I finished my steak, I was tempted by the look and smell of those sirloins... Service was fair, our waitress kept mixing up our order - there were only 2 of us."

  • "I never held a high regard towards steakhouses in general, and I was a little skeptical of the food and service MarkJoseph would offer. However, my two friends and I were immensely pleased with the service we received right when we entered the doors of the restaurant from the hostess. The food did not disappoint, we picked from the Restaurant Week menu, from the appetizer (Caesar salad) to the dessert (Berries with Cream). If I have time to visit the neighborhood again, I will definitely be stopping by and bringing more friends and family to this delightful restaurant! Thank you so much."

  • "The food was great. We went here for 2014 summer restaurant week dinner. Compared to last year, the portion of side dishes (cream spinach and mashed potato) seem to shrink. Overall, the sirloin steak was cooked perfectly. The service is fair enough."

  • "I've been to many good restaurants during the restaurant week,, Mark Joseph is one of the best I've experienced. The menu is really full of varieties and the meat is cooked to perfection. The Canadian bacon is a must try! Will definitely go back!"

  • "This review is based on a restaurant week experience, so take it for what it's worth. The steaks were mediocre and the service was poor. Even the sides were just ok. Better than average Caesar salad. Maybe they just slum it for RW but I won't be going back to find out."

  • "The food was great even for I guy like me who does not eat red meet, usually steak houses dont serve anything well but steak I had the tuna and it was so good this could have been a seafood restaurant"

  • "I find the portions, e.g., cream spinach and mashed potato and brownie sundae, to be extremely small. Don't be so cheap with the side dishes, especially when the customers are paying dinner prices. I live ten minutes away and might not come again because of the small portions."

  • "Great choice for restaurant week! Steaks are fantastic, service is friendly and the portions are generous. Would go back in a heartbeat"

  • "MarkJoseph Steakhouse gives a generous meal, even during Restaurant Week…other places offer a smaller, limited menu. This is the third year we have gone to celebrate my birthday. It always feels special, the food is abundant and tasty. There is an excellent wine list and the service is impeccable. A first class experience!"

  • "I went with a group for restaurant week and it's definitely a good intro to the restaurant. Overall, we had good food and wines, can't complain too much. I was unlucky in that my steak was cooked wrong and became medium well though I ordered medium rare. I didn't make a fuss because everyone else came out perfect, so I was just drawn the short straw. Definitely worth going back."

  • "Great food. Probably the best steak and value you can find downtown during Restaurant Week. Five of us walked two blocks from our Water Street office. All had salad, steak and mini brownie sundae - with a $5 extra side of bacon. Service was excellent and so was the food. The only issue - over 30 minutes between salad and steak. We will, however, be back again."

  • "Ambiance and service was great. Meats (Filet and Lamb Chops) could use more seasoning. Drinks were good. Pricey but caught it on NYC restaurant week..."

  • "My apartment is only a ten minute walk from this place. I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. Everything was great - from the food to the service, I have only good things to say about this restaurant. It is pretty pricey so it won't be a weekly tradition for us, but I will definitely be back for the special occasions."

  • "Met a colleagues staying in area and was very pleasantly surprised at the service, quality of food and ambiance. My companion was elated at the quality of the restaurant...its a hit or miss there but this was definitely a HIT! Couldn't have asked for better and made a great impression! Thank you"

  • "We had a reservation on July 4th with plans to view the fireworks after dinner. We were able to call and add to our party one day prior to the reservation and then were 35 minutes late. The restaurant was very understanding and was able to seat us without a long wait and even bought us drinks for our troubles. The steaks were excellent and the sides were perfectly done. Will definitely dine there again."

  • "if you are in this area of NYC and want steak this is a terrific choice. service was great on a very busy 4th of July. Worth the steep prices. know what you are ordering as this is like many steakhouses where the sides are for two or more people."

  • "A truly outstanding experience, the T Bone was perfectly cooked and presented and the side dishes of Mashed Potato,Mushrooms were also excellent. The hospitality and friendliness of the staff were as good as I have ever experienced on a first visit, and this included the owner introducing himself personally and buying a round of drinks. The rest of the staff were also true professionals and contributed to what was a very memorable 4th July dining experience.I can't recommend Markjoseph highly enough and I have eaten in establishments worldwide at every level. Many thanks to Greg and his team for an unforgettable evening, you are a credit to the New York dining business."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at MarkJoseph on July 4th just before the fireworks display. The restaurant, as you might will imagine was mobbed. Thanks to OpenTable, we were able to cut the line and we were immediately taken to our table. But there was chaos in the restaurant because of the the crowds of people. Our dinner was OK at best. My steak was medium-well, even though I ordered it medium-rare. The worst was the creamed spinach that was totally loaded with so much salt that it was not edible. We will not be returning to MarkJoseph, but perhaps the experience would be better on a calmer evening."

  • "Mark Joseph is truly a wonderful purveyor of fine food. Every bite from the appetizer to the dessert was perfect. The crab cake was the best we have ever eaten! The steak was marveled to perfection! The service was wonderful-- What a gem!! A great place to dine!!!"

  • "Service was good. Restaurant is always empty and quite. Probably because its way over priced. Steak was average. Under cooked. Clams were salty. Sides were over cooked."

  • "We went there on a Sunday night, a time when most of wall street and the financial district is like the apocalypse. I think we were one of two parties in the restaurant. That said, the service was excellent and the food was great. We had the filet that was cooked perfectly and the pasta fra diavlo, which was excellent. We also had the cold seafood appetizer -delicious. Nice wine list and great bar with TV's (we watched the final 15 mins of USA World Cup). Overall a great experience."

  • "Excellent service and sized portions. Friendly, clean and excellent food. Usually go here with co-workers but decided to have nice dinner with my wife. The area is a heavy tourist/transplant area, but as a life-long NYKr this is on the top of my list for hidden gems that the locals can enjoy as well. The bacon is signature, side mushrooms are awesome! I rate the side mushrooms the finest of ALL steakhouses in NYC and I have been to them all!"

  • "Everything was perfect! My boyfriend ordered a 3lb lobster that was closer to 5lbs and out of this world. I ordered the 12oz Filet Mignon in a mushroom glaze with shrimp and it was also, perfection. The staff is friendly and attentive without being pushy. I can't say anything bad about this restaurant and I highly recommend it! Just make sure you are ready to indulge yourself because it is quite expensive."

  • "Porterhouse is to die for, less greasy than Peter Lugers but just as flavorful. Excellent Slab Bacon, Fresh seafood always, wonderful steak sauce. Always accommodating for our large groups."

  • "Wanted to have something aspiring as competition to Peter Luger and read about Mark Joseph. The Canadian bacon as appetizer was a hit! For mains we had the Steak for 2 which we asked to have medium rare but must say that it was more rare then expected. However great meat! Not very impressed with the sauces either The sides were not as well prepared - the baked potato was a little hard. Good wine selection and the service was very friendly "
