Diner Reviews
  • "Food was great, our server could have been better, seemed like he was rushing us"

  • "This is always a useful choice if you want to eat near the Civic Center, and avoid the fancy places on Hayes Street. Food is perfectly good and the place is normally uncrowded and quiet, if they don't have a large tour group eating there."

  • "The Opera buffet was completely booked so I opted to find a restaurant between the Civic Center BART station and the Opera House and found this gem. I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised we were, everything was upscale except the dinner prices which were comfortably within a "Bart riders budget"!!! Aces for this place!!!"

  • "I selected this restaurant because of its proximity to the Orpheum. What a huge mistake! Located in the Hotel Whitcomb, the decor is old SF, but run down. The food was some of the worst--I ordered the crab cakes which didn't taste like crab, it was surrounded by a cold saffron corn puree that made my stomach turn, the waiter was rude. I asked where the ladies' room was, and the woman at the front directed me across the hotel lobby, not informing me I needed a key to get in. I waited at the door for someone to come out, and when I entered the bathroom, it was flooded! I was wearing high heel sandals, and had to choose between getting my feet wet or not using the restroom. Run as fast as you can from this place!"

  • "Food was delicious but took too long to arrive during the lunch hour."

  • "This place has lots of potential but probably needs a new chef. Nothing in our meal was memorable and the waiter, while very courteous, neglected to make sure the sauce was separated from the food, as requested. The best part was that the dining room was large and quiet and supported a normal conversation."

  • "Eating at Market Street Grill was like going into a bit of time warp. I had moved away, and hadn't been back in 20 years. Decor is much more casual than it used to be. Food was nothing spectacular. Actually it kind of reminded me of going to Applebee's. Seems like MSG has forgotten who they used to be. Sad. "

  • "Our server kept forgetting things and had to be reminded several times to bring beverages etc."

  • "Market Street Grill is a gem in a neighborhood that some people avoid. It's quite (which is a rare in today's restaurant world), you can actually have a conversation. The food and service are top rate!"

  • "My latte was served in a glass with someone else's lipstick on it. When I asked for another they simply poured it into another glass instead of making a new one. Food was fairly good. Wish I had known that this place was part of a hotel. "

  • "Great location for theater, good food, and exceptional service!"
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Everything was excellent - food (salmon, sole, chicken, pasta, crab cakes) as well as the salads and the wine. The service was outstanding and charming, and very attentive. So I hate to say that we had a small issue when the bill came -- one dish was recorded twice on the bill when only one had been ordered and served. This small oversight was remedied on the spot, but it would be better if those small errors could be avoided right away"

  • "We had dinner there before going across the street to the Orpheum Theatre. The food and service were good. Parked once. We would return."

  • "This was a great choice for a great dinner before Mama Mia."
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "We have eaten at this restaurant and it is always good. It has a nice old world ambience and the menu although not extremely broad is always good. The lamb chops were outstanding as was the excellent mushroom ravioli! And its NOT noisy!"

  • "Chosen for its closeness to Davies Hall, we were very pleased. Good food, interesting seasoning, nice decor."

  • "We have dined here twice--both before going to the theatre. Absolutely, a perfect choice. Our first visit, we were a little short on time, and no problem. The second time, we made early reservations, and never felt pushed to move on. Everything was great--service, food, ambience. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "The short ribs were fabulous, absolutely delicious! The lobster mac & cheese were gourmet. Excellent food. But the decor is definitely dated. Great food, but very dated decor. The dining hall with the high ceiling desperately needs a professional make-over so it's more current and vibrant. The blond color wood paneling needs to be taken out and be replaced by a more modern & elegant wall treatment. A warmer, sophisticated color scheme is needed. The A frame ceiling needs Spanish metal chandeliers, not the white globe chandeliers. The metal fireplace should be transformed into an impressive stone fireplace. The stain glass ceiling in the bar area are great, but there should be small matching Murano glass hanging lights over the bar counter."

  • "We were late, but they held the table, got us our food quickly and we were out in time for our theatre performance. The food was good, hot and flavorful. Service was impecable. We will eat here again."

  • "Market Street Grill recommended by friend as good place to have lunch before the 2 p.m. performance at SF Symphony. I had soup and salad and both were seasoned well. My dining companion had the crab/avocado sandwich with truffle fries. She said it was good."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "Despite mixed reviews, we decided to try Market Street Grill before the Symphony. Salad was good, crab cakes and short ribs were mediocre at best. Although our waiter was friendly, service from the kitchen was SLOW, and the waiter was unconcerned. Took almost 15 minutes for him to take our order, longer than that for the salad/soup to be served, and at least another half hour for the entrees. To make it even worse, the couple across from us were served very quickly. We were sitting with a short wall separating us from the cashier, and she was very noisy, calling across the restaurant at one time. Not very classy! Needless to say, we won't be back. Very disappointing!"

  • "The atmosphere was a little gloomy and reminiscent of a hotel dining room. The fire was nice for a rainy night."

  • "We gave this place a try even though Yelpers pretty much trashed it. The food was mighty tasty and we had very little to complain about besides cold butter for the bread. The service was also great."

  • "Sitting by the fire with a bowl of clam chowder felt very warm and inviting. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The food was very good."

  • "Proximity to Orpheum Theater is what brought us there. Although the atmosphere was a little dated, overall it was very comfortable. The food was good and our waiter was great. Very reasonably priced. We'll go back."

  • "Hadn't been here in ages, but it worked out to be perfect for a pre-theater dinner for 6 of us. The special Book of Mormon prix fixe menu was good, but the portion of the main dish was quite small, although very tasty. All 6 of us enjoyed our meals, and I particularly liked the salmon on a bed of artichoke hearts, spinach and tomatoes. The dessert that came with the prix fixe menu was light and tasty. Will come here again before seeing a show at the Orpheum."

  • "We were headed to an 8:00 o'clock performance at the Orpheum. We arrived an hour early but they were able to seat us. The service was fantastic and the food was great. The restaurant is great but it's proximity to the theater and parking makes it spectacular. Highly recommended."

  • "A lovely room, a menu of tasty choices, delicious drinks from the bar, attentive service and 2 minutes from the theatre. Can't be beat!"

  • "Step back in time to elegant dining -- high quality cuisine, sensitive service, historic setting in the Whitcomb Hotel dining room -- and be placed in a perfect frame of mind for an evening at the opera, the symphony, or a Broadway-class musical across the street in the Civic Center."

  • "An old world ambiance with attentive service, good food and ideal if you're headed for the Orpheum Theater, across the street. Only steps away from a Bart station."

  • "No one in our group of 4 was familiar with this restaurant housed in the Hotel Whitcomb prior to eating there before a performance at the nearby Orpheum Theatre. We found the ambience to our liking as well as the exemplary service. Food was good if somewhat pricy. However, this will be our go-to place whenever going to the Orpheum. A happy surprise!"

  • "Four of us ate dinner here before seeing The Book of Mormom. We had several different dishes, and each one was a well executed and well received. I really enjoyed my lamb chops and my wife's New York with Bordelaise sauce was a hit. One of our party ordered the short ribs and we all shared an order of the goat cheese and mushroom crostini. The wine selection is only adequate, but we enjoyed the wines we selected. All in all a very nice beginning for the evenings entertainment"

  • "Choose this restaurant because it was near the Orheum theater, would return because of the food and service. I was pleasantly surprised that, even though there was a packed house, the service was efficient, friendly but not rushed. The lamb chops were cooked to order, asparagus was perfect. We arrived about 30 minutes early for a 5:00 reservation but we were seated in about 15 minutes. If there is a show at the Orphem, I would advise that you get the earliest reservation available."

  • "We wanted dinner after a concert that ended at 4:00 pm. I made a reservation for 4:30 pm - but we arrived at 4:07 pm. The restaurant welcomed us and graciously held out our chairs while we sat down. The service was good. We enjoyed our food - the portions were not too big. My guests enjoyed salmon. My husband enjoyed the wild mushroom ravioli and I had the seafood pasta. I think there was a lobster tail on top. It was cooked to perfection. The pasta sauce was creamy with peas - not too heavy. In many San Francisco restaurants the tables are very close together. Not here. They were suitably spaced and the atmosphere was very relaxing. The Civic Center BART entrance is right outside - near Symphony, Opera, Asian Art and some theaters."

  • "Main plus is that it is very conveniently located near the Orpheum Theater, for those wanting a lunch or dinner before a show."

  • "It is right across the street from a theatre. No one likes to park even once in SF but much less twice. Very convenient. Lunch was good. Waiter was very good. Ambiance was pleasant."

  • "The Market Street area near the Orpheum Theater is really lacking in decent places to dine before or after a show at the Orpheum - mainly fast food options. When I spotted the Market Street Grill just across the street and down one block I booked a table immediately. Located in the historic boutique hotel, Hotel Whitcomb, the Grill offers an ambiance that is elegant and refined - just what you would expect in a vintage San Francisco establishment. The wait staff was pleasant but unobtrusive. The wine list was just right, and the bartender poured a generous glass. The lunch menu offers salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, enough choices to please anyone in your party. We both enjoyed our hot sandwiches with truffle fries. We will be back !"
