Carl Schroeder did not disappoint! My partner and I visited Market on our last evening in the area and tried the tasting menu with wine pairings. We made sure to select opposite items so we could try as much of the menu as possible. Wow. Every bite was perfect. If you're a foodie, don't miss this one.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Restaurant in So. Calif.This restaurant is a gem! I live in Orange County and when I come down to San Diego I love going to Market. The service is excellent. They give us immediate attention, but they don't rush you. Always have great specials. I've had several of their menu choices and everything I've tasted is outstanding. We love going to new places to see how they are, and we are so glad that we came to The Market. Our server was Terra (sp?), and she was very knowledgeable, friendly, and very professional. I wanted to be daring and try one of their "Adventurous White Wines" that I had never even heard of, but I wanted to make sure that it would pair well with their Lobster Special. Terra gave me an excellent recommendation, because it paired beautifully with the Lobster and all of the veggies it came with. I can't wait until the next time we eat there! Everything is fresh and inventive and so flavorful. I am seriously - seriously - looking for another restaurant in San Diego that compares. I haven't yet found it. (Accepting suggestions). The price tag is higher than your regular everyday place (our bill was $200 for 2 including tip, no alcohol) but being someone who sometimes suffers from shoppers remorse, I have no regrets dropping money here. It's just that good and so worth it. And who wants to waste money on food that isnt good? I really wish I could ask what the chef's favorite restaurants are. We are willing to pay high prices for great food and received a great value here. Tables were a bit too close and noise level was high for for a romantic dinner, but totally worth the foodie experience. The restaurant is casual but has un upscale feel to it. One of the things they are proud of! I had their beet and goat cheese salad that included pink grapefruit, something that was delicious. For years this location has been the kiss of death but Market has been successful here. Why? Food, service and little touches such as a complimentary amuse and homemade caramels presented with the check. Our server was wonderful and all her suggestions were perfect. The hamachi appetizer, cabernet short ribs and the market bars were wonderful. Eager to try other things on our next visit.

Whether you sit in the bar and eat from the smaller menu or if you sit in the dining room and splurge on the wonderful menu in there, the service, the food, the ambience, the entire experience is always perfect.
I am pretty fussy when I go out. I usually have high expectations especially when I am paying a lot for a meal. Most of the time, I am happy, with an occasional glitch. but at Market, there is NEVER an occasional glitch. The cocktails are great, the wine pours are abundant, the food is exquisite and the service is personable, knowledgeable and gracious.
This is my go to resto in San Diego. I have yet to find one any better for the price.1/15/2013 12:00:00 AMA restaurant week findingWe went to Market during a restaurant week 3 years ago. Then after trying few restaurants around the city, we had to go back to Market, simply because many 4+ star restaurants end up disappointing you, most likely because their food quality is not consistent. Service and Ambience aren't the problem with these places. With Market, however, we found that the ambience was better than before and the food was just as good as before (if not a slightly bit better).
