A word from Market House on the Square
The Market House on the Square is a concept built on a few simple concepts. Chef Zumpano uses Fresh, Local ingredients and makes as much as he can from Scratch to create a unique take on Familiar Food that we grew up with, and a fresh look at Dishes we have come to Crave as adults. The James Beard nominee and Chicago native infuses a lighter touch to classics such as Meatloaf, Crab Cakes, and Beef Stroganoff, while bringing a healthier and fresher approach to very popular dishes like Risotto, Ginger Steamed Salmon and the very unique “Burger, No Bun."

This emphasis on Local, Fresh, Familiar product also extends to the Bar where great Local Craft Beer favorites include Half Acre, Tighthead Blonde Ale from Mundelein and Inspiration Pale Ale from up the street in Lake Bluff. These are the centerpiece to a beverage menu that includes Classic cocktails with North Shore Vodka and Gin and a robust wine list featuring 20 selections by the quart

Diner Reviews
  • "Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was good. We were able to have a leisurely lunch. Would definitely return. When the weather is nice, they have a great outdoor dining space."

  • "Soup, salad, pot roast and 2 glasses of wine for lunch was 70 dollars. Outrageous."

  • "We celebrated a birthday with lunch at Market House last week, and we all enjoyed our food and experience. The crab cake, whitefish, salmon and chopped salad were all very fresh and expertly prepared. This was a nice outing for a special day."

  • "We enjoyed the atmosphere, we were able to talk to one another and be able to hear each other. The food was outstanding. The Cream of Broccoli soup was the best I ever had. We will definitely come back."

  • "I heard from a friend this was a nice restaurant and we were not disappointed. Sat in the back patio, very quiet. The server, Manuel, was excellent, very friendly and not pushy. He gave us plenty of time to enjoy our wine and appetizer before ordering dinner. The food was very good as well, fresh and hot! Highly recommend Market House!"

  • "Lovely evening for a mother/son "date"...Market house was buzzing with crowds taking advantage of the special Friday night 1/2 price quartinos...we started with the mussels and they were a little bit of heaven! Our attentive server was more than happy to bring us a second serving of toasted bread to help soak up the magical, garlicky, soupy liquid...it was hard to leave a drop behind! We shared the perfectly balanced beet salad and then feasted on the Friday night fish fry, crispy and light, cleverly presented on flatly folded brown bags, garnished by the traditional catsup, malt vinegar and especially tasty tarragon aioli (a nice substitute for tartar sauce!). We did not (sadly) leave any room for dessert....next time!"

  • "We love Market House and Fish House! The Chef presented foods that incorporate an abundance of flavors in each bite. The fish tacos are the best I've ever eaten--literally, plate-licking. My friend had the fresh whitefish and roasted cauliflower--I'd never seen preparations this unique and the plate barely held the size of the fish. So fresh and beautiful! The cocktails are brimming and the wait staff is truly gifted in their knowledge of the menu, the bar and in their genuine warmth. We were delighted that the Chef came to tables, speaking with diners and creating a mood of conviviality throughout the restaurant. Do yourselves a favor and go!! You will enjoy every second."

  • "We just tried Market House since the new chef took over. WOW. Had the risotto balls and tuna tartare to start and enjoyed both very much. They have a new section with simply grilled meats and fish and you can choose your own side. I had the Salmon and sugar snapped peas both were fresh and delicious. The server told us to expect more changes in weeks to come. We are excited with the changes and can't wait for patio dining this summer."

  • "New chef added some great options but his "fish pieces" for Friday fish fry were poor. Thin pieces of tasteless fish,,thank goodness for the sauces and vinegar. Potatoes good howevere. Appreciate the minimal beading but need more actual fish!"

  • "We go to MH quite often and are always happy. We tend to order the same things (shrimp tempura, Amidei salad, brussels sprouts) but this time we noticed new items on the menu. They go out of their way to please each patron."

  • "We had a terrific meal at The Fish House. Fresh oyster varieties, from both coasts, were a rest treat. Every bite of every course was a treasure! Our waitperson was most knowledgeable and patient as we struggled to limit our meal choices--everything on the menu was tantalizing."

  • "I was looking forward to experiencing the new Chef's menu and presentations. I was disappointed with the selection of entrees. The menu remains the same as it was last October when I took my friends there for their birthdays. The entree was prepared exactly as it was a year ago. Filet of beef with mushrooms. Why not add garlic mashed potatoes….something a little different….does not have to be anything big but a little change would be nice. I will look for another restaurant for my next birthday celebration."

  • "Carrot soup was delicious Salmon and whitefish entrees were very good However, the whitefish sandwich was not satisfying at all and the fries were totally soggy, definitely disappointing."

  • "We had dinner with another couple on Sunday evening. Our table was near the fireplace which was cozy. We started with the arugula and beet salad (generous and delicious) then had the hangar steak, turkey club and margarita flatbread. All were very good. The bar offers a wide variety of spirits and I had an excellent Savignon blanc by the glass. The service was outstanding (truly one of the best waiters in recent memory). The decor has a Ralph Lauren feel and is comfortable. The room was quiet."

  • "We enjoyed both of our meals (steamed salmon and club sandwich) -- they were both made perfectly. The service was also excellent -- Paul took good care of us."

  • "The "special of the house" tomato soup was flavorless and tasted like warm tomato purée . 1/2 of grilled cheese, dry and the bread slices did not even match up . Tator tot appetzer was to have Gouda cheese in them, not in ours, the sauce was good. VERY disappointing."

  • "Tucked in way in the corner of Lake Forest's cute Market Square, Market House offers a lovely alternative to the usual hum-drum fare of typical suburban restaurants which tend to be either plagued with poorly executed dishes, or chains catering to the lowest common denominator. The staff at Market House makes a solid effort to present a polished, professional service. The quality of the food is generally very good, but nothing we've order ever screamed out as a must-order dish. I can confidently recommend this place, although I can't tell you you have to try ____; everything we've ordered has been genuinely enjoyable even if nothing made me stand up and applaud."

  • "Tuna tartare was fine. Shrimp linguine included sausage that was dry and tasteless and did not go with the shrimp. Linguine was hard. Sauce was watery and bland. Hot wings chicken with ravioli - the ravioli dough was hard (not 'al dente' the dough itself was just tough. The shredded chicken was just dry."

  • "First visit. Bar was very good. The restaurant was a little better than Francesca's which we thought was the best in Lake Forest. Food was absolutely incredible. The wine list was good but limited. Great place for dinner and conversation"

  • "We love Market House. The mussels are one of our favorites as well as the Mercantino salad with shrimp or salmon."

  • "We had been to the space that is now Market House several times over the years, with generally good experiences, but the new (OK, not really THAT new anymore..) ownership and menu have revitalized the place. The menu is wide-ranging with some unique choices, so everyone was able to find a dish to suit. The Bruschetta deserves special mention for its creative presentation and fresh taste. The vegetable ravioli looks nothing like one might expect, with layers of very lightly grilled veggies over cheese-filled ravioli, but it was delicious. The small filet was cooked perfectly and of excellent quality, and the fish tacos were on point (see, I told you the menu was wide-ranging!) Overall, well worth a try, and we'll be back!"

  • "We recently moved to the suburbs and were missing the city restaurants. Market House is one of the rare places in the suburbs that can hold it's own with any of the great city restaurants. The decor is nice but not too fancy, with beautiful high wood ceiling and a really nice atmosphere. The food was amazing and the service was above and beyond great. We went for a special occasion and we were so impressed with how accommodating the staff was from the moment you walk in. I have a VERY restrictive vegan diet and they did everything to make sure that they made me special dishes that were delicious and fit my restrictions. My husband had the fish special and said it was outstanding! Salads, sides and main dishes were all great!!"

  • "Wonderful place for a Saturday lunch. Relaxed atmosphere, not overly crowded, the food was perfectly prepared, and the service was attentive and friendly. The menu was great for one of us who wanted a dinner type entree and the other of us who preferred to eat a lighter sandwich/salad combo. We are new to the area and will be regular diners here."

  • "The food was excellent, better than expected(better than the previous owner),the price is moderate and the area of Lake Forest Market Square is the top of the North Shore. The service was outstanding. One of the top places of the area"

  • "You'd think everything in Lake Forest would be overpriced...not so with this restaurant. We had a very nice meal on New Year's Eve off the regular menu that included a large appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine, small dessert, and free bread...all for under $75. A nice restaurant that you can make a "fancy" night out...or just a high end casual affair. Coat check and valet too. My meal was just a tad under seasoned, but a touch of pepper and it was perfect. They have a reasonable lunch menu too. For the money, it is an exceptional value. Our waitress was a delight and really made the dining experience a joy."

  • "The tomato basil soup, billed as the restaurant's famous tomato basil soup, was anything but. The time honored recipe used by the previous owners had been changed , resulting in a huge disappointment . The soup was inedible."

  • "Great restaurant with several different areas for seating: outdoor patio, garden room, main dining and bar area. They offered a nice variety of food selections for lunch, along with daily specials. Service was very good and they were very knowledgeable about the menu. Definitely recommend this restaurant for a business lunch, family dinner or gathering of girlfriends."
