Market House on the SquareMy new favorite restaurantWe celebrated our 22nd anniversary at Market House and decided we couldn't have selected a better place.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went there as a group ofWe went there as a group of 8 to celebrate my son's high school graduation. Overall, it was a perfect choice and the food was fantastic. The portions were a bit uneven, though. The beef stroganoff required a doggie bag but the mahi mahi special was particularly small. Our waitress seemed quite green and could've been more attentive. But these are certainly forgivable things and did not diminish the fact that the good was great as well as the atmosphere. The $2 mini desserts are a nice way to satisfy a sweet craving after the meal. And we all enjoyed the black olive tapenade and white bean hummus served with the bread basket.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMA wonderful spotI made this reservation for my grandparents, for their luncheon with a friend. They had a wonderful time, and greatly enjoyed the food and atmosphere. A favorite spot for any occasion!5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food. Good service. ConvenientGood food. Good service. Convenient. Never have a problem getting reservations.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh & local foodsThe food wad delicious, fresh and locally grown and homemade. Also love the little alley market in the back where they get some of their fresh produce. We'll be back for sure!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were favorably impressed. We were favorably impressed. Good food nice people. We will be back.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious whitefish!I enjoyed my whitefish served on a bed of mashed cauliflower. My husband ordered the salmon which was done to perfection and served with freshly asparagus. YUM! Restaurant is quaintly tucked away in Lake Forest. We were staying at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the location was a short 10-minute drive from there.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMDining ExperienceThe menu is great. It would be hard for someone not to find something that they like. The fish that I had was prepared to my liking and I am particular when it comes to fish. The wine was excellent. Everyone is very friendly.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMA Perfect DayI thought a restaurant that featured outdoor dining would be just the spot to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated. We enjoyed a lovely table in the sun, where we received good service and outstanding salads made with fresh ingredients. We even were served a scrumptious birthday brownie. Beautiful weather and an excellent restaurant contributed to make our lunch perfect!5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and atmosphereThey have taken over an old establishment - the inside bar has a very local english pub feel yet the patio has a great little "side street" feel with a gorgeous old tree and wonderful ambiance. Probably one of the best places to sit outside in the spring/summer/fall. The food ranges from upscale (tuna tartare) to modernized pub fare (stroganoff with homemade noodles). The wine list quite notably did not have any of the usual brands - instead, it listed unique wines that were lesser known and likely carefully selected. Anyone whose white special is an Albarino gets my vote, and they did well on the Pinot Noir which is not easy. The cake doughnuts were a fun, nice touch at the end, great for sharing.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMOrdinarily I wouldn't fillOrdinarily I wouldn't fill out this form, but I so appreciate being able to sit outside on a beautiful day. I had made a reservation ahead and arrived at a busy time, and my table was ready and waiting! Thanks.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh, delicous foodWe had a delicous meal at Market House. I started with the crab cake. It looked small upon arrival, but when it bit in I was impressed as it was all crab meat and very little filler..worth the price. I then had the white fish and it was cooked to prefection. My husband had the amedei salad and he said it was the best salad ever. He had the salmon for dinner and loved it.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Mother's DayWe had a wonderful mother's day dinner at Market House. Attentive service, great food/wine, appropriate kid choices for 13 and 11 year old. Fun desserts. Try the donuts! Will make this an annual traditiion. Thanks for a lovely evening.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA gem in the middle of Lake Forest! We enjoyed great salmon and duck that should please any diner. Attentive wait staff made a very pleasant experience.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA great addition to Lake Forest.A great addition to Lake Forest. Very busy for lunch and dinner for good reason. Excellent menu and service in a comfortable pleasant atmosphere. I will certainly be back again!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth a visitJust recently moved to Lake Forest and was very pleased to have found a restaurant like the Market House on the Square. The quality of the food is outstanding, service impeccable and pricing very fair. Looking forward to next visit in the near future.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWe recommend the Market HouseWe had a relaxing evening at Market House. The food is very good especially the ginger steam salmon. Can't wait to go back when the weather is warmer so we can dine on the patio.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMDuck pot pie was amazing!Duck pot pie was amazing! Also nice to have vegetarian options... and even nicer to have reasonable prices. We'll be back.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Tuna was very good. TheThe Tuna was very good. The Reuben was a bit overdone and crunchy, which is fine for the outer crust on the bread. However, the exposed pieces corned beef was crunchy as well, which made me think it spent too much time under a heat lamp. The desserts were very good, especially the chocolate square.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMI took my sister in law toI took my sister in law to lunch for her birthday on Saturday. I had had a previous experience with this place when they did not honor another birthday. I expressed this after I made the reservation and they certainly made up for the time they forgot the birthday. My sister in law was quite pleased and could not figure out why everyone was wishing her a happy birthday! Thank you to the person who made this possible.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMPretty much the same as thePretty much the same as the predecessor, South Gate. Solid lunch menu, but so much variety concerns me that some -- or much -- of the food must be frozen. Only had a club sandwich, but my guests had hamburgers (they liked) and another had salmon (which she liked). I was impressed with the rosemary ice cream; I had a taste from my guest's plate.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNew ownership, new interiors,New ownership, new interiors, menu and ambiance, make this a spot for a wonderful relaxed dining experience. Excellent service, expanded wine selection, spectacular patio and interesting food create the perfect blend for an enjoyable visit.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNice seafood options for lunchWe had a great lunch at Market House. Loved the tuna tartare, whitefish sandwich and salmon. Our meal was well priced for the quality of food and wine.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMThe back room was quieterThe back room was quieter and we could have a conversation although the noisy crowd in the bar area in the front room did interrupt our conversation at times. It was a fun group and they appeared to be having fun though. The food was very good as was the service.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother wonderful dinner atAnother wonderful dinner at the Market House. I ordered the Amidei's salad to be healthy and then I topped it off with
the Pot Roast. A yummy and fun dinner. Glad that we have Market House in Lake Forest.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMExpensive seared tuna salad,Expensive seared tuna salad, but quality food. Service was wonderful. Busy lunch hour crowd.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMgood food, great service, good food, great service, quiet atmosphere made for a most enjoyable lunch.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMMarket House on the SquareMarket House on the Square is great! We recently moved to Lake Forest from Portland, Oregon and were delighted to find this gem. We highly recommend it!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMClubby and ComfortableMy father and I and a friend enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Market House. We sat in the main dining room, in a banquette with a full view of the room. We all ordered different things and each item was delicious. We had fish tacos, whitefish a salad and a crab cake. all were hot, nicely plated and tasty.
I personally don't like the trend of the gigantic plate/bowl thing that most food comes in these days. It is unwieldy and pretentious and is hard to fit on the table. I would much prefer a dinner plate, and especially a cup for soup, but that is a minor thing.
The new look of the Market House is crisp and clubby. Beautiful panelling gives the room a warm, rich feeling. The new owners have taken the old Southgate well in hand.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMDecent ambiance, fairly quiet,Decent ambiance, fairly quiet, not a kid place. This is a place for adults. Typically mid to senior age range. Can be pricey. A good specialty is salads featuring fresh vegetables from the, Amedei Mercatino.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful dining experienceWe had another great evening at Market House. The white fish with the caramelized cauliflower was so good! Can't wait for summer and outdoor dining!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat serviceOur party of 4 had lunch. We were immediately seated and the waiter (Fabian) was very knowledgable about the menu. Two of us had the soup of the day (beef & veg.) which was delicious. The Reuben and pulled pork sandwiches were very good as well. All over a very enjoyable meal. We will certainly return again.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dining experience inGreat dining experience in a beautiful setting on the Square.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFrom the minute we enteredFrom the minute we entered MH, we were treated with smiles and graciously accommodating staff. Drinks are ample and well-poured. The menu is a delightful and refreshing change from ordinary--I wanted to try everything. This will become a favorite go - to restaurant for anyone who tries it once. What a fabulous experience!3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my first time joiningThis was my first time joining Market House for Sunday brunch and would highly recommend! I tried to behave, but was unsuccessful as my poached eggs with hangar steak was excellent, but not as excellent as the sublime roasted potatoes. YUM!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMI brought a client and herI brought a client and her hip artist friend from Austin, TX for lunch on Friday and Market House did not disappoint. We devoured our beet salads with gusto, and the mushroom strudel was an excellent new addition. Our server was new, but very attentive. A reliable local gem that works hard to get even better!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a welcome relief to haveWhat a welcome relief to have this restaurant space re-energized last year. I like to come to lunch to visit friends in the suburbs and this is now where I always go.
I have not had a chance to try it for dinner, but all say it is great, especially upstairs where their serve great fish according to my friends.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were seated on time, foodWe were seated on time, food was great as was presentation.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were sitted immediately,We were sitted immediately, the food was great and the wait staff was exceptional.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMReturn visit which we enjoyed.Return visit which we enjoyed. Plan on going back some time soon too!2/24/2013 12:00:00 AMI love eating at Market House-I love eating at Market House- they always have something that I'm in the mood for. Their dishes are classic yet contemporary and innovative- slightly different than normal. The Ameidei salad is amazing, one of my favorites. Not one dish I don't like. Everything is pretty much made in house which is great. They also have 3 private dining spaces that are great for many different occasions. Not only is the food good, the service is outstanding- the servers and management really know what they're doing. You can easily find a manager or the owners- a lot of times they are the ones greeting you when you walk in! I would totally reccomend this restaurant to everyone I know.2/14/2013 12:00:00 AMDisappointed, but hope they improveI recommended this restaurant for a celebratory lunch for my team. I was disapointed first in the bruschetta, which we had to put together. This was hard for a group of 6. Last time I had it we had individual pieces. The tomatoes were fresh and tasty but it was hard to assemble and not the best. The toast that they gave us was yummy. The sandwiches were OK. The tomato soup, which Southgate was famous for, was not hot, more on the cold side and not the same ... not as good. Overall, the experience was disappointing. We were excited to try a new place but not sure the group would go back. It also is not cheap! Wish I had better things to say, but hopefully this review will help because I do want them to succeed.1/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
