Diner Reviews
  • "The popovers and consumme are always a nice start. My husband loves to order the orecchiette pasta and I usually order whatever seafood dish is on the menu - the lobster or crab pasta scallops, or laksa seafood curry. My husband loves the chocolate bar dessert at Mariposa. This time, I tried the warm lilikoi pudding cake, which looked very nice with the thin cookie in the shape of the Neiman Marcus butterfly. The dessert was something between a souffle and a custard. We also ordered a box of the chocolate chip cookies to go! And i made a batch of cookies using the Neiman Marcus recipe, which my family enjoyed very much. We love the view of Ala Moana beach park and the ocean whenever we get to sit outside."

  • "We ordered BBQ prawns and Tanqueray martinis for starters, and the sea bass and salmon for entrees. The food was very good and beautifully presented. The sea bass and prawns were especially good. The Tanqueray martinis were weak and watery. When we got the bill, we saw that we had been charged for Grey Goose martinis -- which could explain what we experienced as lack of taste; the gin taste and aroma of a good dry martini is what we really like. Service was lack luster. We didn't get served at all for quite some time -- and the restaurant wasn't crowded. Finally, a manager-type person came over to ask if we'd been served and took our drink order. After that, the waitress was more often available."

  • "I was told by co-workers that this place had good food, especially the pop overs. After eating there for lunch, it was not what I expected. The food was too little for the prices we paid and the drinks were too strong. The food also was bland tasting if you ask me."

  • "My family and I enjoy dining at Mariposa because of the high food quality and it is kid-friendly. I had the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection, service was excellent, and it was quiet on a Saturday evening. We sat indoors because sometimes the traffic from below is too loud."

  • "I love going to Mariposa. The atmosphere is unique and fun and the service is great. I love the consommé and popovers. I had the ahi melts and was disappointed. It had no flavor and the bread was soggy. I love lunching at Mariposa and hope the food improves!"

  • "I love this restaurant very much before. But not anymore. 1. Reception women not even smile and very rude. 2. We order cactails before we order food and I asked few times to bring before main dishes. But drink come way after main foods. 3 we order scalop and garlic pork but scallop became too sweet( I usually order before and I liked)、Pork is over cook and dry. 4 When I try to pay I pay by cash. And without ask me they never bring the change. Which is tip is over 25%!!! And I try to looking for my service person but could not find . And finally I had to leave there... Anyway I love this restaurant original bread and atmosphere but I don't think want to come back next few month......(T_T)"

  • "My boss was kind enough to invite me to lunch to talk shop about the direction that our non profit organization was headed. To my joy he suggested Mariposa. Couldn't have picked a better restaurant. It was a clear and sunny day, beautifully balmy breezes, delicious food, and exceptional service. I ordered the orchiette which is something unusual for me. The dish surprised me as it was presented with a lovely bouquet of brocollini crowned with a cloud of horseradish, the pasta itself, savory grilled sausage cut into ideal bite-sized portions, and sautéed vegetables, served with a moderately thin sauce that was so rich in flavor I wish that I had a spoon with which to consume the hearty nectar. Luckily, I had my popover."

  • "A seat on the lanai to watch the sun set was a perfect end to our stay in Oahu. Every dish was a treat. The fish (opakupaku) was some of the best I've had, and served with delightfully flavored accompaniments. An excellent meal."

  • "One person never be able to have the scenic table. I reseived a balcony table .But they didn't offer me the out side . That was so disappointing!"

  • "Made a request through open table for a table in a quiet area. Either open table did not forward the request or Mariposa ignored the request. The first table was next to the hostess stand, probably one of the noisiest spots; they did accommodate my request for another table."

  • "We would have had an outstanding dining experience, but our wait help was not very personable at all. He didn't smile, introduce himself, or make any other attempt to be personable. During meal service, the waiter wasn't very attentive to our requests, and one of our orders was incorrect. To make the contrast even stronger, the black-attired bus-persons were much more friendly and accommodating. Food was very good and the view was impressive. We just wish that the service had approached the same level."

  • "I consistently rate Mariposa high but not this time because the service was no great! I think they have a lot of great servers and need to make sure everyone is giving the same high level of service so it is not hit and miss. Food was good but being presented by bad service brought it down a notch for me."

  • "We always visit Mariposa when we are in Honolulu. This time we ordered the tasting menu with wine pairing. After the Monkey Bread with Strawberry Butter, husband and I had the Scallop and Pork Belly appetizer; second course was Scallops with Chanterelle Mushrooms and a nice sauce for me, Lamb Chop with Orzo and Vegetables for hubs. Delightful experience yet once again."

  • "I've been to there for while...because last time I was there the waitress made me feel bad. We went there for coffee or tea and we didn't have food. When the waitress know we don't have food she act like upsetting... In this time the waiter was ok, but food is bad! I had my favorite dish Seared Tuna Salad, but there is not much tuna and a lot if Japanese Buckwheat noodle like a noodle salad with strange taste dressing. I was very disappointed and felt wait money for the food. Enjoy the view from the table but don't expect good food!"

  • "This is a lovely restaurant - but, for locals - the menu is just too limited to want to come back again and again. When they do have specials - it is really something from their extremely limited regular menu - NOT A SPECIAL. This chef really needs to get more creative and develop some new items which we thought were going to come with the renovation. It didn't. There are so many super creative chefs out there - like Wade at MW - a new restaurant - but, each visit the menu has new items for both lunch and dinner that are NOT on the regular menu. Wish Mariposa's chef would come up with some regular new menu items and get creative - for this local - it's hard to want to go with such limitations. View is outstanding, service so-so."

  • "I've been to Mariposa for both business meetings and first dates and haven't been disappointed. The staff is well trained and polite and Val, the GM, does a great job keeping this place at the top of my "go to" list for entertaining."

  • "we went for lunch and it was crazy busy. our waitress only came by a few times and we had to wait. we did not have dessert because the waitress did not get back to the table until almost 15 minutes after she brought the dessert menus."

  • "Reception was unfriendly and abrupt. We arrived on time for our appt, was told to wait aside, yet they began serving others in the line after we stepped aside to wait .After close to 10-12 other people had been seated, we rejoined the line to the reception, then finally were taken to our table! We understand they were perhaps seating larger table of 4 guests, there were other groups of 2 guests that came after we checked in and were seated immediately whilst we waited on the side till I stepped back to the line. Made for an unpleasant first encounter with the restaurant and had we been not familiar with the good food served, we would have walked away and gone somewhere else. Fortuanately waitstaff, once we were seated, were very friendly."

  • "Had a a friendly date. Very friendly and accommodating service. Service was excellent. Was able to converse due to open environment, I did not feel stuffy like most enclosed restaurants. Food was really good. The tenerloine - rare, was really good and I was surprised of the quality. usually i don't eat steak. But that was a good piece they served. It is pricey, but for the service, food and ambience its all worth it. I recommend this restaurant for night events from sunset to closing, you will feel at ease and enjoy your surroundings."

  • "I would have to say that I used to enjoy going to Mariposa and oftentimes would recommend guests and friends to go there since I'm a hotel concierge. I have heard in recent years that service has gone down the drain, but I just figured it was a fluke here and there. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I went recently and was rather disappointed with the service of the waiter that I was assigned. That being said, none of the wait staff was rude or unpleasant. It was just that I had to flag down other waiters to bring what I ordered from the waiter that I was assigned. I ordered a wine pairing in which the wine came before the course it was paired for- without food , or didn't come at all. I got tired of flagging down other waiters."

  • "w/an anniversary on valentine's it's always stressful to get a dinner reservation and deal w/HI traffic. then there is almost always a prix fixe menu that ends up costing $300+ for a so-so meal! mariposa at lunch was perfect with the option to choose from the prix fixe or regular menu, our waiter was friendly, professional, food was great, reasonable pricing, view/table was spectacular. only things i would nit pick about are: the bus help was a little too casual/less professional feeling, and i did not like the models walking around interrupting our meal to tell about what fashions were available to buy in the store. otherwise, would definitely do this again :)"

  • "I was here for lunch on Valentine's Day. Unfortunately the quality went from a 4.5 to a 3....overall! This is a great restaurant though, but maybe they were understaffed for the busy day. Actually, it seemed like there were plenty of employees, just many that were not properly trained. On slower days the service and quality are better for sure! That kinda makes sense, however, I don't think that is right. On special occasions Mariposa needs to meet quality expectations of long time guests who know Mariposa quality. It's not okay to lose quality when there are many guests on special holidays. Also, they know it's a special holiday so they have a heads up to meet the demand with high quality not lowered quality service and food."

The staff is always on top of their game from the time you check in with the friendly receptionists to the greeting from your server, to the service from the other wait staff....you always feel like a valued guest at Mariposa! It always a positive experience for everyone in your party, which is important when hosting clients, friends and family. This was another most enjoyable time....thank you Mariposa!"

  • "The atmoshphere was relaxed and quiet. Our table was outdoors overlooking the ocean. The meal began with wonderful monkey bread rolls. The lobster spaghettini was light and delicious. The salmon entree was equally good. It was the fist time we had dinner at a Neiman Marcus restaurant. We will be back!"
