  • "Swell place. Delightful, personal service. Excellent food in every respect. Broad and energized menu. Fun."

  • "I had been to Mario's years ago and had a good experience. It seems to be the only Arthur Avenue restaurant taking open table reservations, so I gave it a try, not wanting to wait long for a table. The service was excellent, but unfortunately the food was far from it. Calamari app was very good. I've never experienced tough chicken scarpariello. I could barely cut it and chewing was quite a chore. I'll wait for a table somewhere else next time I'm in the area."

  • "One of the two best restaurants in New York City, They go out of the way to make you welcome."

  • "The service and food were topnotch! I was immediately impressed when I expressed a desire to be seated in an area that was not initially offered nor available but somehow became available upon asking! The marinated carrots that were served along with an awesome tasting bread basket were amazing! Never tasted anything like it. The calamari was delicious - light and tasty - didn't even need the "spicy" sauce it was served with and enjoyed it both ways. We enjoyed fresh fish specials for our meals that surpassed our expectations. The staff was friendly and made you feel right at home."

  • "We ordered some of the recommendations from the waiter, and they were excellent! Very delicious Italian food, with a friendly, old world atmosphere. Very enjoyable."

  • "I enjoyed my meal here. They give you carrots and warm bread with butter and oil on the table. The calamari appetizer was quite a large portion and very tasty. I had chicken francese that came with a side of pasta which was very good, but I was so full from the calamari and the bread that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I would've liked to. I wish I had room for dessert because they had a rainbow cookie cake that looked so good. My friend had rigatoni stuffed with ricotta which was kind of like a small manicotti or ravioli. She thought it was really delicious."

  • "Mario's never fails to please. Not only is the food so good but there is valet parking. Two in the party had the fish special and LOVED it. The fried Calamari was cooked to perfection. The portions are generous. They are well organized .....everything arrived at the tale at the same (approx.) time. We came with friends and felt relaxed and did not feel rushed. Parking is CRAZY in the area. Oh....and they accept reservations and are very friendly. One of the other popular restaurants does not and we waited ONE HOUR after arriving at 5:20pm on a very rainy night."

  • "Have dined at Mario's many times over the years and this is the first time I was heavily disappointed. Food had little taste and no flair. Entrees were over-sauced to the point that the food was almost swimming. Had the sauce had any flavor, that might have made up for it. Would try another restaurant on the Avenue before going back again."

  • "I had only heard stories about the old school Bronx Italian eateries. I wanted to check them out. Also, my girlfriend is from Hawaii. She was really curious too. I took her to Mario's. Great food, great service and fun all around."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of "free parking". We felt welcome and at home in this warm family style restaurant.. The food was fresh and wholesome but nothing special; service friendly and professional."

  • "We returned to Mario's after a 20 year hiatus to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday. We had an awesome time. The food was plentiful but more importantly scrumptious!"

  • "A very warm and cosy mom and pop old school italian restaurant with very good food and great service."

  • "The service at Mario's was exceptional! It felt like the waiters were the chefs because they truly knew the menu choices that would satisfy my insatiable appetite. In addition, this is truly authentic Italian food! Every flavor caressed my palate and the wine pairing was noteworthy! I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My husband and I had a lovely dinner. It started out with warm and delicious bread. You could have it with either olive oil or butter. They also included some kind of cured carrots. We both had an appetizer, main entree, and a glass of wine each. The total bill was reasonable for all of that. Overall, I would go again."

  • "I was there for a birthday celebration and was surprised to find how great this restaurant is. It was our first time and we congratulated each other on the wonderful choice we made in selecting a place. The food was very good. Our waiter was terrific. The owner gave us a warm welcome. I'll be back."

  • "I don't know if I need to go into how bad this restaurant is. The portion were huge and you wish they weren't. I ONLY went to Mario's because it was the ONLY restaurant on Arthur Ave on Opentable. I have the expectation that if a restaurant is on Opentable that you are giving your thumb's up. Please drop Mario's from open table. If you don't have any restaurants on Arthur Ave open table that is better than having your customers thinking that this place is Open table approved. I have come to expect the best from Opentable, your restaurants are consistently the best and the reviews right on. Mario's didn't let me down, they are who they are. You let me down."

  • "I would not recommend going out of your way to eat at Marios, as the food is unremarkable. The ambiance is kind of nice and the service is attentive, but again, the food is not impressive. I had the rigatoni special with broccoli rabe and sausage and it was good, but I could have made it just as well at home. Another person in my party had one of the fish specials, which did not taste fresh and lacked seasoning. I would say the best part of the meal was dessert. This place has been around forever, but things change over time and in the case of Mario's, the change has not been for the better."

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation, but could not be seated till 7, however understandably the place was hopping. They only had two bus boys, which made clearing of tables while still pouring out water and bringing bread a hassle for these boys. I actually felt sorry for them. It was so noisy that our waiter got two orders wrong because he couldn't hear our orders properly through the din. It took 2 1/2 hours to finally eat and pay our bill. Perhaps Saturday is not a good day to go there."

  • "Mario's is a family favorite. From the minute we sit down and are presented with crusty Italian bread and the best marinated carrot sticks I've EVER tasted, we know we are in for a good night. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. We had a great bottle of Montepulciano for just $20! The Veal Saltimbocca, which was on special, melted in our mouths. The hot antipasto was filled with all the things we craved; baked clams, stuffed mushrooms, mozzarella and tomato, asparagus wrapped in proscuitto and mozzeralla and of course, fried calamari. Pastas are cooked fresh and al dente. If you are in a hurry, go elsewhere. Nothing is sitting in a steamtable waiting to be ordered! Mario's is our mainstay. Consistently good!"

  • "I love Mario's. The food is great and the experience pricelist. The service is attentive and knowledgeable. A favorite."

  • "The food is good, and reasonably priced, but nothing special. Since Italian food is plentiful in this area, you need to be distinguished if you want an excellent review. The Chianti wine was very good by the glass and the food seemed fresh, but not seasoned in a special way and for the price was good. Can't say anything more about the meal than that."

  • "Marios has left the restaurant scene, or maybe it was never a part of it, just a memory from the 70's when we would trek to Arthur Avenue for great Neaoplitan fare. Now tired and worn out it has nothing to offer but a memory. Craig Claiborne is long gone though his review from 15 years ago still sits on the table. Shrimp Fra Diavolo over pasta cooked hours before was a sorry mess and lasagna , once a favorite is now a gooey soggy mess lacking taste as well as cheese. Time to go Mario."

  • "There's better food on Arthur Ave. But they do use open table!"

  • "My husband and our best friends had dinner there last Sunday. The linguini & white clam sauce was excellent; and by all accounts, the eggplant parmigiana was to die for! It's become our new old favorite in Little Italy."

  • "The only restaurant I have ever gone to where I am made to feel like family. I wouldn't go anywhere else in the neighborhood. The clams oreganato cannot be better anywhere - you must try them."
