A word from Marinus - Bernardus Lodge
Marinus features California-Regional cuisine, created by celebrated chef Cal Stamenov, featuring local organic, seasonal produce as well as regional seafood and artisan farmed meats. Taking full advantage of the resort’s pastoral location, the new design artfully combines modern comforts with the natural elegance of Carmel Valley wine country. Hand forged chandeliers and wall sconces from Normandy add drama while freshly-painted walls in soft shades and natural tones have created warmth. In addition to the signature fireplace, cozy custom chairs, linens and drapery have added texture and depth while bringing elements of the outdoors inside

The four-star restaurant has been named Zagat’s “Top Restaurant in Bay Area” and received Wine Spectator magazine’s “Grand Award” since 2001 for its wine cellar. The cellar houses 1,850 different wines and a total of more than 25,000 premium bottles, including 10,000 bottles from the Bernardus Winery & Vineyard near the resort.

Diner Reviews
  • "The environment is elegant, infused with Carmel Valley hominess. We were treated to an imaginative, excellent all-seafood night. And while we typically choose our own wine pairings, we placed ourselves in the very capable hands of Paul Wetterau. His pairings were inspired. Waitstaff were professional, helpful, friendly; never intrusive."

  • "I ordered duck; entrees took an inordinate amount of time to come out and mine was cold. They made up for it with complimentary wine and desserts."

  • "A weekend get away became special with our dinner at Marinus. The restaurant is well placed without being too stuffy or structured. Staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Our meals were terrific. The surprise was that for an ambitious food/wine centric restaurant it escapes fussiness and presents a comfortable environment with generous portion sizes and impressive wines."

  • "It is wonderful coming back to Marinus. We had the same table as always and it is a wonderful setting. The service is outstanding and the champagne and the wine are just perfect. We always trust the sommelieres recommendation and it has never been wrong. The food is very good coming from regional sources and being very well selected by the staff. If you can make it for a special occasion, this is the place to go."

  • "This was our second visit, which we looked forward to with high expectations. It is a beautiful setting and we had a perfect corner table. For reasons that were never explained, the serving of our entrees was unacceptably slow, other that saying "sorry for the delay," The duck entree was disappointing but the snapper was quite good. They did provide a complimentary glass of wine during our extended wait."

  • "We did the chef's tasting menu and overall the food was delicious and presentation was excellent. Service was great."

  • "Food: The main dish from the tasting menu was a small piece of lamb the size of a potato chip. Since I requested dairy free, it was basically salt and pepper lamb with 6 'fresh' green peas and an under cook mushroom. The other items from the tasting menu is not worth mentioning. Best dish there, the bread. Service: I walked in with a glass of wine. Told my server I will order after I am done with my glass. They took the wine list after I read over it. I finished my wine, they took my glass, I had to asked for the list again. They came back and took the list away without asking if I wanted to order. My server never came back until I was done with the main dish. Service is on par with Australia."

  • "Creative and talented kitchen paired with knowledgeable sommelier and wait staff make this place a must for anyone interested in fine dining on the monterey peninsula. A small but diverse menu can be expertly paired with fine wine selections from around the globe. If you enjoy wine, and are a little adventurous, skip a bottle and let the sommelier pair each course with one of his choosing. Great way to get out of the typical varietals you are familiar with. This place is a jewel, from the tasteful dining room, beautiful setting, marvelous food and great wines. I had the opportunity to try 2 of the four desserts. The caramel with sea salt dessert was a journey of flavor and textures. Not to be missed if you like salt/sweet "

  • "My husband and I went to Marinus for our wedding anniversary. While the food was very good and the wait staff very friendly, the evening was pretty much ruined because of the glacial pacing of the meal. We waited over 20 minutes to talk to the sommelier. It was at least a half hour for the waiter to take our order. An hour and a half passed before we got our first course. When our salads were delivered, we requested that the main course come a little more speedily (rather than another half hour between courses) and it was delivered before we were half way though our salads. The meal was completed at 10:00 PM. We originally sat down at 7:15 PM. We enjoy a leisurely meal, but this was a bit much."

  • " The dinner was well paced and extremely enjoyable. The food was excellent and the categories from which to choose were very creative. Drinking wine from grapes that were grown in the vineyard right outside the window was a treat - and it was fabulous! Great special occasion restaurant."

  • "On a recent visit to Carmel I asked a resident of the valley to suggest his favorite restaurant. I couldn't have been more pleased with his choice! Marinus was atmospheric, and unusually welcoming to a lone diner! I had attention lavished on me; Holly, my server, took excellent care of me and was helpful as well as friendly. There's not one point of the evening that I considered anything less than wonderful. I can't wait to come back!"

  • "We had the tasting menu and split a wine flight. Every single bite and swallow of the amuse bouche of cucumber gaspacho, fresh crab and sashimi with meyer lemon puree, roasted duck with grilled duck liver and date puree, lamb mignon with potato puree, Americbella cheese course, and palate cleaser of lime granite with whole milk yogurt panna cotta, we were "oh wow, mmmmm...." The wine pairings were all spot-on (though the one wine that was not outstanding on its own was Bernardus' own vintage). The only thing I can't comment on was the dessert course, because we were too stuffed -- but it was very pretty and the incredible tawny port they paired with it we somehow found room for. Perfect for celebratory splurge."

  • "We have dined at Marinus several times before, and once again, we were not disappointed at their quality of food, service and wine list. Every request we had was cheerfully completed with perfection (i.e. amount of salad dressing, temperature of the fish, etc.). In addition, our waitress and the sommelier were delightful and knowledgable without being intrusive or overbearing. We will contine to put Marinus at the top of our list for a fine dining experience whenever we are in the area. "

  • "Well meaning server, but uninformed and trying to act as if she knew the answers to my questions. When I asked if there is cream in the risotto, she responded," Well you know risotto is always creamy and buttery." I asked her to check and she returned saying there is no cream in the risotto. The host was dressed very casually, was friendly and warm, but it just didn't set the tone for what we want when we dine in a special, high end restaurant. On a positive note, the food was very good, and we appreciated the complimentary sweets at the end of the meal. I hope the new ownership stays on top of the service in this restaurant, because it is beautiful, reasonable, and the food is high quality. We've had some excellent servers at Wickets."

  • "I do not believe I have ever had the experience of not being able to eat my food in a 4 star restaurant. The flavors were not only strange, they were nauseating. The chef does not understand subtly, but they do understand small portions that are expensive. I note that my husband did not enjoy his food either, but did manage to get it down. It will be a memorable evening though, just not for the right reasons. Sometimes trying to be so unique backfires."

  • "I have dined in Marinus quite a few times and had always been impressed by the food, but not this time. With the fixed price menu, none of the five courses was outstanding. The fish (halibut) was way over-cooked, the lamb did not have much taste. One would expect much better quality given the price they charge. Service was good but not great - the waiter simply had too many tables to look after. My water glass was empty for quite some time without being refilled, until I asked for it. It is a disappointment."

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant with impeccable service, but I found the food fell a bit short considering the exorbitant prices. Portions are very small. What had a "wow?" The mushroom soup, the fresh breads, the shaved brussel sprouts (side dish to the duck). What was NOT a "wow?' the highly touted duck entree was decent, but not even close to duck we've had elsewhere. This dish had more fat than expected and was a bit too chewy. The beet salad was decent, but not nearly ad good as we've experienced elsewhere. The wine list is substantial, almost daunting. The sommelier suggested decent wines, but never below $150 until prompted. The wine we selected was outstanding. Water is a charged item. Overall pleasant, but not perfect."

  • "We had the tasting menu here last Saturday evening. We stayed at the hotel so it was a relaxing meal and then a two-minute walk to our room. Food was great and service was friendly. The sommelier seemed a bit new. He brought the wrong wine over initially until I pointed out the mistake. This was easily fixed and he was friendly about it. I asked a bit about another wine on the by-the-glass list and felt the description was nothing like the wine when I tasted it. Based on the description I didn't want to try it but figured I would. The wine was lovely. We would visit again if staying nearby."

  • "The restaurant does dining in an old-school way that remembers the ideal of focusing on presentation, portion, and people. From remembering the customers who have been there before (despite not having any frequent dining program...and not needidng one) to making sure special requests and personal preferences/requirements are all managed with class and style. The atmosphere is usually quiet - this evening was not such a case, however as there was a large LOUD party that got louder and louder as the evening went on. Even so, the staff made sure everyone was treated wonderfully. The food? One word...DELICIOUS! Presentation and taste are all top-notch. Try the 6-7 course with wine paring. sommolier wont dissapoint! Top nods to Rizqi and Paul!"

  • "We had been to Marinus before and loved it but hadn't been there for several years. It is better than ever. Elegant without being stuffy. Service is friendly but not intrusive. Food is exquisite. Had been to another highly rated Carmel restaurant the night before and the food was a hot mess trying to be trendy. At Marinus the food is prepared with great restraint so that the flavors compliment each other without negating the high quality of the ingredients. Desserts are whimsical and delicious. The Bernardus wine was luscious. Overall, a memorable evening in a beautiful setting."

  • "Great restaurant for a special occasion. We celebrated our anniversary at Marinus, my table request was fulfilled and we were treated with attentive service all evening. The food courses were delicious as were the wine parings. Well worth the money."

  • "Four of us dined at Marinus on a Friday night. The setting was lovely and service was very attentive. My only service issue was an "undercurrent" of bother when we first arrived and requested a couple of minor comfort things (chairs etc). That said, service was otherwise good. However the food was not outstanding. It didn't compare to a several course lunch at Sierra Mar (post Ranch) , or Dinner at Roy's (Spanish Bay), yet we paid much more. The amuse bouchée and palate cleansing sorbet (served gratis) was better than my appetizer or entree. Others in our party of four raved over the crab salad but nothing else. The desserts were the best - tasty and different). I'm afraid Marinus did not live up to the reviews I read. We won't go back."

  • "One of the best restaurants in Northern California. The entire staff provided us with a very memorable anniversary dinner. From a custom menu to terrific and creative dining options. Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone celebrating a special occasion or looking for a memorable dining experience."

On behalf of our entire party, we look forward to our next "excuse" to return. Just fyi- We had the tasting menu with wine pairings and suggest you do likewise- highly recommend!!"

  • "Exceeded my expectations. On par with fine European restaurants. Classic dining in upscale, romantic room. Creative kitchen, fresh ingredients, ample wine selections -- some good values on list and also some top of the charts stuff. Not stuffy, friendly and very attentive service. We recently moved to area and this will be a place we will return to for special occasions and some times just for a wonderful night out. Going to try the Lodge's bistro soon and expect it will be a good informal option for lighter fare."

  • "Three of us had dinner at Marinus-Bernadus. The service was wonderful. The wine (Bernadus 2009 Pinot Noir) was excellent. The only problem I had was with the Abalone. It was very tough, and I have never had Abalone like that before. I was told that it was a new dish. Aside from that, the food was first rate"

  • "Since moving to Central California from Chicago, we have been missing a certain level of dining experience. We aren't food snobs, but honestly, you come to expect a certain level of service and a certain level of thought in a menu. Being in Central California exposes us to a lot of high quality ingredients, so we expected a lot of high quality food - and Marinus delivers! The food is amazing, thoughtfully prepared and the servers were knowledgeable and never in a rush if we had questions. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Superb from start to finish. We dined on a Sunday evening when Chef Cal was not in the kitchen yet it was a flawless experience in every way. The team executes with a symphony of experience. The recently re-designed dining room is wine country chic, comfortable, elegant but not stuffy in any way and a harmonius match with the farm to table artisan cuisine. We enjoyed a table in front of the fire and lingered late into the evening course by course without feeling rushed in any way. Barnardus Lodge and Marinus is located just 20 minutes from C by the Sea and a dining must for visiting foodies to the area and a perfect little gem to runaway to."

  • "We have been here several times before. If we are in the Monterey Peninsula this is the restaurant of choice for special occasions. It has been redecorated and is beautiful with a welcoming fire and welcoming personnel. The drinks (cocktails) are excellent and the wine list if quite good, especially for whole bottles. The amuse gueles were good and the entrees were excellent. The tasting menu was too extensive to consider. You would have to really be fasting to do it. Attentive wait staff and all in all a very satisfying way to celebrate one's 44th wedding anniversary."
