Diner Reviews
  • "I was very nicely surprised by the quality and freshness of the food, as well as the chef's creativity. Excellent service, nice and quiet place. "

  • "We celebrated our first anniversary here, and were SO happy we chose it over a "fancier" place. The staff is incredibly warm and knowledgeable, the food is fun, interesting, delicious, and plentiful! We stuffed ourselves silly and enjoyed every minute! Will definitely be back for another special occasion!"

  • "Could not have been more impressed with the concept, the service, especially the food, and the overall experience."

  • "This was our third time at Marigold Kitchen and each has been outstanding. No duplications. Nothing exotic or bizarre. And the meal usually takes three hours from start to finish, so it's definately now somewhere to go before "the show". But MG is probably the most creative cooking in Philadelphia, presented relatively simply and without ostentation. Our top choice for special occasions."

  • "A number of the dishes were outstanding (Chestnut Ravioli, Bandera Quail, Scallops) and others were trying to be something they weren't (Asparagus, Pork Belly, Lobster Bao). Great creativity, fresh ingredients, nice presentation - all reasons to go back. The restaurant critics would say do a few things really well instead of going after such a diverse menu. For the most part, menu items went well together, but the Lobster was an awful attempt at "Asian" cuisine that never belonged on the menu."

  • "There is a reason that there is so much buzz about this place! Every course (13 of them) was unique and delicious. We did have one vegetarian with is and they accommodated her without any problem. Be prepared for a leisurely dining experience and as I was told by the hostess when confirming: definitely bring more wine than you think you'll need. And a shout out to the wonderful servers as well! Well done."

  • "Over-priced for quality of food. Felt that they were trying to hard to present fancy, interesting dishes instead of making sure that each dish truly shined."

  • "I am happily surprised every time visit the Marigold Kitchen. The menu is fantastic and the wait staff is very attentive. Surrendering your experience to such capable hands allows you and your guests to enjoy a wonderful night with the best backdrop possible. It is impossible to find a finer dining experience in a more accessible venue. I would recommend this experience for anyone and I have."

  • "It is one of the very few places which do not have any menu options and everybody has to go for their pre-fixed $85 per person. On top of that, if you fail to turn up for a reservation, they still would charge you $40 per person!!! Ambiance- West Philly just off the Baltimore Avenue...need I say more? Food- At $85 per person and over 2 hours of serving time consisting of 14 courses (if you count each little spoons as a course- which they do), the food was still insufficient to fill us up. The courses were unique and tasty but nothing special. Bottom line- With so many great fine dining options around Philly, I wouldn't spend my hard earned cash here...."

  • "By far my favorite restaurant in Philly. Yes, it's expensive but worth every cent! If you're adventurous with food, foodie, appreciate creativity, go to Marigold Kitchen! if you return there, just call before to see if they've changed their menu so you won't repeat the same courses (as it is a fixed tasting menu). but they're tentative to special requests. it's my 3rd time there and i'm always blown away. Yummmm"

  • "Multiple small courses, some very unusual. Don't take your "meat and potatoes" friends here. BYOB is good since the price for the food is high. Different, but you wouldn't go very often. A fun experience."

  • "The lobster bisque with thyme foam was amazing as well as the mushroom himachi. The presentations were beautiful and the beet dish was one of the best I've had. The menu is elaborate with many components and a lot of courses calls for a lot of memorization on the servers part, I'm sure, but some dishes were flatly explained with lots of "umm"s and blank pauses. I appreciate when servers check in and ask how we are enjoying our dishes, but that unfortunately never happened. Not even once throughout 15 courses! Luckily, we didn't have any complaints. Mad props to the chef (s). Our meal was excellent. Just look out for the amount of chipped plates that are coming out of the kitchen! A little tacky considering the price you pay to dine."

  • "15 courses of flavorful bliss! I was a little worried because I went in with really high expectations, but Marigold Kitchen did not disappoint. Each course was unique and flavorful. This was a memorable birthday experience! Highly Recommend! Everyone should try it!"

  • "A terrific food experience. Our waiter was outstanding. They noticed we arrived by cab and asked when we served our last course if we would like them to call a cab. Wonderful experience!"

  • "I made reservations for a special occasion at Marigold Kitchen after hearing some friends rave about it. We knew we were in for a treat, and we were definitely not disappointed. I believe that everyone in Philadelphia should make a trip here at least once. It was my first experience with molecular gastronomy and it was definitely unforgettable!"

  • "This is definitely made for special occasions. The best part is how accommodating the chef is with dietary restrictions. A you book just leave comments on who eats what (vegan, gluten free, no fish etc) and the chef designs a meal entirely from scratch for you. The full meal takes 2 hours at minimum so you get to enjoy your company. It's in a house on the corner of the block and at night the sign is easy to so keep a lookout. They also provide you with a copy of the menu at the end so that you don't have to struggle memorizing everything! I definitely can't wait to bring some foodie friends back."

  • "Marigold Kitchen tasting menu sneaks up on you. The small bites add up to a dining experience that assault the taste buds with variety and imagination. By the evening's end you leave with a full stomach and an awareness that you have just had a unique dining experience. And the staff added to the memorable experience with perfect pitch timing and grace."

  • "I took a while to write this review because I wanted so badly to love Marigold, but ended up feeling something less. I've been to wd-50 and spent 15 years living in SF, so I'm no stranger to molecular gastronomy, and I feel lucky to be able to play with it in my very own neighborhood. The food was mostly superb, at times superb and interesting and fun when it was less than fantastic. Most of the courses scored high marks and I would return as a result. The downside, unfortunately, was the service. We had to wedge ourselves between other seated diners to get ot our table on our own, our server spilled food knowingly on our table and seemed not to care, and rushed through his descriptions. Great food, but not a fine dining experience."

  • "15 courses sounds like a lot of food but, when each is just one bite, you leave pleasantly full. All the dishes were good tasting. I love the fact that the restaurant is in a converted house."

  • "The food was beyond phenomenal. I have never had a meal this creative and delicious."

  • "Marigold Kitchen was wonderful! The best meal that I have had in Philadelphia. Make sure you have a full evening for this restaurant as the 16 course tasting takes about 2.5 hours. Staff goes the extra mile to explain dishes and questions you may have. Went to celebrate a birthday and will go back for any occasion possible! :)"

  • "We enjoyed every minute at the Marigold Kitchen. Each course was a delight. This is my perfect idea of dining--course after course of intriguing bites, but you don't feel you've eaten too much at the end. But watch the byob wine, it was my birthday and since we'd brought both a red and white, and I wasn't driving--a little too much fun!"

  • "My girlfriend and I enjoyed a romantic dinner at Marigold. We had heard so many positive reviews about the restaurant that it was a no-brainer for us to try it out. Just as we expected, it was a restaurant eating experience like no other! The waiters and waitresses were very knowledgeable about all the dishes we received and the atmosphere was perfect for an intimate, romantic night. The food was delicious and we would recommended Marigold to anyone looking to take their significant other to a sophisticated place."

  • "The food was delicious. The creativity was remarkable. Service was a bit rushed, and not as professional as I would have expected for a dinner in that price range. Portions were a perfect size that I did not feel completely gluttonous, and could enjoy all 15 of them."

  • "I was overall very disappointed in the restaurant. The restaurant was ranked 2nd in Philadelphia Magazine 2013 and I have no idea why.The menu is fixed price with your only choice of three entres additionally. Although there were numerous courses, which were tasty, they were so small that my girlfriend and I were joking about it. The meal cost $240 at bring your own bottle restaurant and we left very hungry. We even overheard the kids in the family next to our table asking their parents if were taking them to McDonalds after dinner! Additionally its location is someone off the beaten path in West Philly. frequent many restaurants in Philadelphia and found this to be one of the more disappointing."

  • "The service was top notch. I wish the food was on the same level. Perhaps more than one bite per "course" would be better. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of the amuse bouche, however, I don't see how $85/person works. Just happy it's BYOB."

  • "The Chef's tasting menu is a fun, exciting way to try a number of new food pairings! The chef enjoys molecular gastronomy, so the liquid nitrogen definitely comes into play. The execution on the vast majority of the dishes is outstanding!"

  • "Marigold Kitchen has ruined all other restaurants for me! I can't imagine ordering an appetizer, entree, and dessert again- BORING! 2.5 hours and well paced. Chef Halpern's menu was fun and creative and delicious!!! Standouts: white bean bisque with ham bubbles, and liquid butternut squash ravioli with banana salt. There was only one item I didn't like, but it was something I don't like in general- oysters. I still enjoyed the layering of flavors he used with the oyster to make it a very unique bite of food! The amount of food was just right! I left with a smile on my face and a very happy and satisfied belly. We look forward to returning at other times of the year to enjoy Chef Halpern's seasonal menus!"

  • "Been to dozens of great restaurants in Philly, Marigold Kitchen was the best one. Had 15 courses, and I absolutely loved 14.5 of them (never been an Uni fan!). Every dish was something you couldn't get anywhere else. The service was 5-star, and the ambience was great. One of the best things was how peaceful the whole dinner was. It was about 2.5 hours long and there was a great pace to the food, so that we had time to comment on what we ate and plenty of other time to relax and talk in the quiet restaurant. I'd go here every week if it was in my budget, thanks Marigold!"

  • "As most reviewers have said, this place is incredibly low key with some of the most outstanding food I've ever had! I love that you don't have to choose from a menu, but are presented with one amazing course after another. Being a BYOB keeps the cost a bit more affordable, although I think it would only be a special occasion spot for us. We almost had too many servers, which made the introduction to each course a bit confusing - but the food more than made up for that! Unique and unpretentious - this is a real 'neighborhood gem'!"
