A word from Maria Pia
Although many restaurants in the theater district bill themselves as trattorias, few achieve the authentic feel and taste of Maria Pia. This charming Italian eatery boasts comfortable indoor seating for 80, a sun-dappled, 20-seat, rear outdoor garden, and a genial mood that makes the menu that much more savory. The three-course prix fixe menus offer dishes slick enough for savvy palates that still taste as if they were cooked up by mama Maria herself.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Had a terrific dinner at Maria Pia's the other day. Friendly staff, interesting menu, and five different meals were all wonderful. I settled on some plain old eggplant parmigiana and have to admit it was one of the best I have ever had; it t was very distinctive and had a little sweetness to it even. Go and enjoy this little jewel between 7th and 8th avenues."

  • "Was going to Carnegie Hall and had a party of 9. Had a 6 p.m. reservation. I was with my husband, 2 girkfriend's in laws and their parents. We were seated promptly but by the time we ordered, it was almost 6:30 and the restaurant was not really full so hard to explain. We had to keep calling the waiter over to remind him to get our food on time. That Sid, everyone enjoyed their food. My trout was delicious and so was my husbands salmon. Scrimp were cooked perfectly and so was the steak. Tiramisu was amazing!!! We did get out in time but the dessert was rather rushed. I would go back because the food was great, the prices are reasonable and it is a pretty place. My only advice is to go earlier to give extra time."

  • "We were 30 minutes early for our reservation since we didn't know how long our show was going to last. We were seated immediately and provided wonderful service throughout the evening. The antipasto platter hit the spot to begin and both the ravioli and the pappardelle with veal ragu was amazing! We didn't have room for dessert, but finished with a nice double espresso. The dining room was very cute and it was a very enjoyable experience all around."

  • "Charming restaurant, conveniently located in the theater district. The food was delicious, the service friendly, knowledgeable and refreshingly unobtrusive. A thoroughly delightful experience!"

  • "The place is amazing and would definitely recommend going there if you are on a date. Only bad part is tables in the front porch of location are really small. I suggest either inside or tables in back of restaurant."

  • "Great as usual. I have been there many times good food for the value. Get the pre fix"

  • "This is a solid pre-theatre dinner place with decent prices. The salads and pastas are very good; have not tried other dishes. Service was a little indifferent the last time we were there, but it was also very crowded. Would recommend for pre-theatre but would not make a special trip."

  • "Went on a business lunch and was really impressed with the food. The butternut Squash in Sgae brown butter was really good. large portions for apps and entrees but the service was nonexistent and it wasnt very crowded so you think they would have been more attentive."

  • "This is the first time I was at Maria Pia for lunch and I was very pleased as were my friends. The prix fixe lunch had wonderful choices. There was also an al a carte menu. There was no place above to mention that this is a good restaurant for pre-theater dinner as well. Food is good, service could have been better since it was not that busy. No one arrived with menus for quite a while and then a waiter did not come to take our order so soon either."

  • "We have been here a number of times after the theater . This time the food wasn't as good as in the past . I suppose this happens to all restaurants one time or another . Also they need to put a Riesling or Zinfandel on their wine list ."

  • "I've been coming here for over 5 years... it's still a great spot, and the food is outstanding. Great pre-theater, or a special night out."

  • "We have been going here for a few years as there is no better place for a quick and delicious pre-theater dinner than Maria Pia. The service is always polite, friendly and very prompt and the pasta is delicious. We shared some desserts and the Tiramisu and the Banana pie were amazing. I highly recommend it but if you are going for a pre-theater dinner, make sure you make a reservation. Their little backyard is also cute."

  • "This place never disappoints. Great service. Good food. The perfect spot for lunch or dinner before seeing a Broadway show."

  • "Always good food and friendly waiter service and staff. We tried the outdoor garden for dinner this time and it was really nice. THe service was very slow that night, but the walk to the garden was a pretty far walk. No complaints. A great neighborhood find in the theater district. Couldn't ask for anything better. (Maybe a/c in the garden)"

  • "I enjoyed a lovely meal sitting outdoors at a nice garden table. The goat cheese and asparagus ravioli were wonderful. My friends also liked their pasta dishes. The service was wonderful!"

  • "There was a wine glass on our table that was cracked. We all ordered from the pre-fixe menu. Appetizer was calamari--was delicious, sauce was very good too. Had a little kick to it. I ordered the cod over polenta special for lunch, was delicious but a very small portion. Lemon sorbet was dessert--1 scoop. Unfortunately I left the restaurant very hungry. Food quality was there, service was good, quantity wasn't there..."

  • "Food was for the most part very good, however my linguine with clams was a disappointment (linguine was dry, clams not much inside "very small"). Other meals were good. Waiter started my night off on the down side. Seemed like he didn't want to be there when we arrived. EXAMPLE: One of our party hadn't gotten her salad when the others had come. I didn't notice another person was brining it , so I mentioned she still needed her salad. The answer from waiter was he wasn't an octopus. Set the tone for me! Seating was great, drink service same."

  • "Was perfect place for dinner, following a Saturday matinee Broadway show. Food and service were outstanding, and ambiance was perfect. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside. Would definitely return. We had pollo marsala and ravioli with goat's cheese and spinach. Both excellent."

  • "The prices are reasonable but my salmon was dry and afterward I had one of the worst cappuccinos ever. My date's pasta had been microwaved. If you're in the area, it's fine but I wouldn't travel to it."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Maria Pia prior to a matinee Broadway performance. The prixe fix menu was varied and both of our meals were very good. The service was good and when we told the waiter we had theater tickets they made sure we had our meal on time."

  • "We were so grateful to the staff who were most accommodating. My mom, Pia is 91 years old, and uses a walker. The seating was perfect for her and the staff was considerate and checked in on us "just" enough, without being pushy. The wine list was not overwhelming and had choices we were comfortable with. All in all, we would recommend this restaurant to everyone.. Lovely... I would love to dine outside in the back for my next visit..."

  • "This place was fantastic and a hidden gem. Marcelo treated us like family. We found it on Urban Spoon and it was right across from our apartment. Portions were not huge but very tasty. Our girls ages 11-16 loved the Gnochi and vodka pink sauce. Desserts were authentic. Very clean and classy."

  • "This is the 2nd time I have been to Maria Pia and I was even more impressed this time. First of all, it helped that, as a table of 8, they gave us a round table just inside the open front on a beautiful summer day. The entree prices here are a real value, averaging around $20, a little less for pasta, around $25 for fish. In addition, our waiter was right on target in letting us know how much to order, and keeping us from ordering too much. The fish was fresh and beautifully prepared, and every dish was tasty and had great presentation. The place is very pretty as well, with an exposed brick wall and comfortable seating. I would definitely come back again."

  • "This was the perfect place to get together with friends. Did not have to shout in order to carry on a conversation. Food was fabulous. I had the butternut squash ravioli with brown sage butter sauce. So good. My three dining companions also enjoyed their selections. Portions were just right. Definitely will go back the next time I am in New York."

  • "First time at Maria Pia. Went b/c of location and online reviews. Lived up to my hopes and more. Four of us dined and all had excellent meals. I especially loved my potatoe crusted striped bass with spinach. Delicious!! Others enjoyed the pasta, and chicken marsala. Service was very good and friendly staff. Would highly recommend and look forward to returning."

  • "We dined in the rear garden for the first time. It was comfortable and quiet. It was also 9:00PM. My veal was not as good as I have had here before, but overall it was a very pleasant experience. "

  • "A bit away from the hustle and bustle of the theater area so the restaurant has a quiet feeling and nice atmospehere"

  • "The pasta was raw. The sauce was waterish with a heavy cream flavor and nothing more. The wine was very warm. The espresso was the size of an amaricano/traditional black coffee. The staff was so-so. The meatballs were horribly dry. And the Parmesan cheese was powder cheese not freshly grated. The mozzarella was of low quality... Cold as ice and with tomatoes with no taste. Beside the food you will have to yell yourself thru your conversation since the acoustic is a tragedy. Even with a half full restaurant we had to yell to hear each other. We had the pleasure of enjoying the ratteling sounds from the kitchen though. :( "
