A word from Maria Pia
Although many restaurants in the theater district bill themselves as trattorias, few achieve the authentic feel and taste of Maria Pia. This charming Italian eatery boasts comfortable indoor seating for 80, a sun-dappled, 20-seat, rear outdoor garden, and a genial mood that makes the menu that much more savory. The three-course prix fixe menus offer dishes slick enough for savvy palates that still taste as if they were cooked up by mama Maria herself.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Pasta was terrific. Shrimp were a little too overcooked and not particularly flavorful. Had a 630pm reservation and they made sure we were out in time for our play, which was impressive given how busy they were. Service was excellent."

  • "We went to Maria Pia because of location. It was down the block from the theater we were going to. I have told everyone about it since eating there. The food was terrific. The service was attentive and catered to the children. The prix-fixe lunch is an outstanding value!"

  • "Maria Pia is one of my favorite restaurants on the west side. Good food and great service. It's always a pleasant experience."

  • "This is a great little place. On a quiet side street, but not far from the action. The decor is charming but sophisticated. While there were a number of empty tables the night we were there, the atmosphere was subdued and you had the feeling it would always be on the quieter side as any proper restaurant should be, IMO. The staff was very attentive, pleasant and helpful, and the food was superb. Between my wife and I we had 8 totally different dishes and each was among the best we've ever had. To top it off, the prices were very reasonable."

  • "Is definitely a winner! Very nice prix-fixe menu with enough of a selection. We were a group of 7 and no one walked away dissatisfied. Would continue to go back to this place when in the neighborhood."

  • "We chose this restaurant for a pre-theater meal based on reviews. Our server greeted us soon after and read us the specials. He brought our wine and took our order. I would skip the house salad as it was very bland. Some mixed greens and one grape tomato cut in half with a tasteless oil dressing. My tortellini was delicious but there were only 6 in my bowl! My sister's chicken Marsala was also very tasty but two small pounded thin chicken breasts a couple of pieces if broccoli and a tiny bit of Marsala sauce. All of our food and water was served only by expediters and the worst part, the server never checked to see if all was ok with our meal. In fact we didn't see him again until we got an expediter to get him to bring out check."

  • "Wonderful fresh Italian food, great wine list, good ambiance, and top notch service. Great for the theater, but also great for a 7:45, 8:00, 8:30, 8:45 reservation when the theater crowd goes to their show. We highly recommend and will go back."

  • "This little Italian restaurant was recommended as a good spot to have dinner prior to seeing a show. The ambience was warm and inviting. Service was really good . My sister had rack of lamb which was just a little overcooked and I had the striped bass which was nicely prepared. We shared an order of gnocchi which was delicious. Things were paced such that we enjoyed a relaxing meal and made it to the show in plenty of time."

  • "Excellent pasta dishes, delicious crisp salad, all for an excellent price. Prize fixed dinners well worth the price. Surprised to find such excellent value in NYC. Would definitely go again."

  • "Loved the food and the waitress couldn't have been more accommodating. My only complaint is that virtually everything on the prix fixe menu had a surcharge! Why bother calling it "prix fixe" at all?"
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "we love coming here the food is great and the price is right...if i had any complaint i hate asking for more bread i think it should be replaced or asked if you want more. but as we asked for more it was always given to us. we will go back again and again"

  • "This is my third visit to Maria Pia, and they never disappoint. The food is delicious, service is great, nice selection of wine, and the prices are more than reasonable for NYC. I highly recommend!"

  • "This was my 6th time at Maria Pia, and I always enjoy it.The food is consistently good, service always pleasant with a relaxed ambience. Unfortunately, this time the host was incredibly rude when I arrived when I asked if he could check me in so I could get my Open Table points when he hadn't done so. He snapped "I'll do it later." I countered he didn't need to speak to me that way . He said it again while brushing me off with a "go away" type of hand gesture, telling me to go sit pointing in the direction of some vague table. I said "It's my birthday; I'm here to have a good time". He just walked away. I never hit anything like that before. I'm unsure if I want to go back again - but we did have a nice meal once he was out of the picture."

  • "super pre theatre location out of the extreme hub bub. Food and wine consistently excellent. Service very good. Top pre theatre rest. we've goine to over last 12 years."

  • "Consistently good food and service. Just down the street. Sometimes busy and noisy because of the Times Square crowd."

  • "Came here on the recommendation of a friend. Everything was great. Formal enough if you want a date, but also casual enough to sit in jeans depending upon the time you are dining at. Food was great, service was great. Plan to return."

  • "Was nice, but not as romantic a room as it appears in the pics."

  • "We had high hopes for Maria Pia based on its ideal location close to the theatre we were attending. It has that NYC cool basement ambiance with yellow awning and all. Bread was tasty but dishes were just mediocre. Service on a Saturday night was extremely slow. It took us almost 2 hours for our meal, start to finish. Luckily the show was at 8 and not at 7. I would go back but maybe only for lunch."

  • "Ate there pre-theater dinner. food was fine but tables were so close that you couldn't have a private conversation. If you are just going there to eat, fine. But if you want to converse with those you are dining with, go somewhere else."

  • "Good value prix-fixe menu for lunch and dinner. Service was excellent and our meal was very good. Nice selection of wines. Perfect pre-theatre spot."

  • "I found this restaurant via Trip Advisor. The Italian food was very reasonably priced; also the wine list, mostly Italian wines. Would go back. Ordered the roasted octopus appetizer, which was excellent."

  • "I hadn't been here in years and was glad to see that the food, ambience and service were still all excellent! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars for ambience was that as a party of two, it would be nice to sit at a table intended for two people - not a four person table with other people "joining" us and no space between tables. I understand the space constraints however I would've preferred our own table. Still, this will not stop us from returning! The food is amazing!"

  • "We have been here before and were a;ways provided with a special greeting and provided with a table to our liking however; this visit we arrived 15 minutes late due to an unforeseen delay and were given a table close to the kitchen and all the service traffic. Although the food and service were good as usual the seating was not at all acceptable.."

  • "The food was good, split red-sauce italian, but the wait staff was especially attentive and helpful, but not hovering A most pleasant experience"
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "Although very good quality of food, the proton size is smallish. That is not to say that it was not enough for a person to eat hut in comparison to other choices it is smaller"

  • "We always dine at Maria Pia when we are in the theater district. It is our favorite go to place. I enjoy the veal dishes there . The service is very attentive without feeling rushed ."

  • "Food was great but we were all packed in like sardines. Lets put it this way. The waitress asked how our food was and the couple next to us responded."

  • "I've been here before. It's convenient and the food, although not memorable, is just fine. The wait staff is friendly, courteous and aim to please. I was with 5 other people who all arrived for a drink at the bar first. Most of us paid for our drinks before sitting down but we were charged for those drinks a second time when the dinner bill arrived. It would have been easy to miss."

  • "Love this little comfortable restaurant. It's good for friends, business, with good food, good wine. I bet it's great for lunch before a Broadway matinee, although I avoid Matinee-day in general. Fish is excellent, pasta is consistently good. I've been going to Maria Pia since it opened on 9/12/2001! Still love it."

  • "We were looking for something close to the Gershwin and were very pleased with Maria Pia. The wine list was decent and the freshly made pasta was delicious. My favorite thing was the Caprese Salad because the ingredients were very fresh. The service was personal and friendly. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to those looking for a good meal before taking in a show at the Gershwin."

  • "Had a great lunch. Prix fixe menu is a deal. Salad, pasta and dessert in NYC for $14.95-hard to believe."

  • "I had read good reviews so went before the theatre. Roasted beet salad tasted like canned beets. No vinaigrette soggy toast with old goat cheese. Three tiny arugula leaves. Bread was not good. Red wine was warm. Monkfish ok but not a lot for $28. One good thing was the crime brulee. The tables are way too close together. It was simply not a good experience"
